I’m a massive fan of the Xbox One Game Preview program and in my opinion I think it’s a little underutilized. Conan Exiles has been in the program for nearly nine months now and I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs along the way, but as it stands at the moment I think the developers have a done a brilliant job and they’ve definitely got more right than wrong over the months. One thing that’s really improved over the month’s is the combat that’s present in the game. The combat now feels awesome and there is a great deal of gore that will no doubt satisfy quite a lot of people. Another thing that’s improved are the building and crafting mechanics. These mechanics work extremely well now throughout and to say there are a lot of things you can build would be a massive understatement. One thing that the game has never really lacked is content and there’s more than enough here to keep you satisfied for thousands of hours. I know a few people who’ve done nothing but play this game for month’s on end and they’re still not bored, which shows you that the game has quite a lot of replayability. You will however take a while to get used to the game and you will notice that the game can feel a tad unfair at times. This can be quite annoying to say the least but I recommend that you ride it out because it does become easier as you progress thanks to the decent skill tree. One thing that will frustrate you throughout your time with the game though are the amount of bugs that are present. Don’t get me wrong none of these bugs are game-breaking its just that there are too many of them and this will no doubt be off-putting for some. Thankfully I was eventually able to look past the issues the game has and that was mainly down to the fantastic world in which the game takes place. The world is very enjoyable and has a great size to it, but most important of all it feels alive at all times which is great. The presentation side of the world may not be for everybody, but I actually quite enjoyed it and I think the visuals and sound design add to the gameplay which ultimately makes things become even more of an immersive experience. At the end of the day Conan Exiles has gone through quite the journey to get where it is today and if you’re one of those people who didn’t like what you saw a few months ago then I fully recommend that you check it out again because it has seen a lot of significant improvements. Without a doubt the developers have been listening to the community and for that reason it gets a big thumbs up from me. Expand

Horrible game company that tends to suspend their players at random and refuses to give players a reason (Except: Sorry, its extremely busy we can't answer)). I highly recommend to not deal with this company.

Funcom games are also in general extremely buggy but every game does has its unique flavor. Its just that the company is too horrible that I can't recommend any of their games.

A medicore game by a horrible company that disrespects its costummers. I highly recommend to look for another company that actually cares about its costummers without randomly banning them.

Anyways, lets dive in. Conan Exiles finally got its full release after a mess of an early access. So how does it hold up on the xbox? Kind of. I'll start with the worst thing about the game that I've exeperienced a lot that kills your overall enjoyability in a game. Game crashes. When the game works it's an amazing game with so much to do and explore. The game starts like this, pick your mode: PvP or PvE and whether you want to play online or offline. You then create a character with limited customization but enough to make a good looking character or a memeworthy character. You can then pick what religion you want to be a part of (this doesnt really matter unless you play PvP). After customizing your character you jump into the game with absolutely no idea where to go until you soon figure out from the horrible gamechat ingame that you need to head north. The gamechat feature is really awful because if the server lags just the slightest the person speaking gets cut out like crazy.

Moving onto what everyone mostly cares about, the graphics. The game looks really good for what it is. MVP is the lighting on this game. The lighting can easily make something look like a blessing or something straight out of Halo 1. Do not bother doing anything at night time, it gets ridiculously dark unless you bump up your gamma settings. The game looks the best during the brightest parts of the day anyways depending where you are on the map.

Gameplay: Is simple. Farm for resources, craft stuff, become a respected exile. Essentially. In PvE you'll have the most fun experimenting with building, crafting, and combat because you dont have to worry about your home getting destroyed like you would have to in PvP. This is a survival game so you will have to look for resources other than building material to stay alive.

Overall besides the game breaking crashes, this game is in the middle for me. It's nothing extraordinary but it's nothing terrible either. For what it is it's worth the pricetag. You can definitely pour hours upon hours into this game. I would advise waiting until they patch the crashing however as that is the only deterrent from telling someone to purchase Conan: Exiles.

While a number of the issues have been improved or even outright fixed, the game is still far from perfect. The visuals have been greatly improved with far more details and textures being used, although the graphics still have a great deal of bugs associated with them. Certain enemies or objects will regularly tear and pop through other environments, and items will display the incorrect texture all together - this happens quite often with the large scorpions I found a few hours into my time with the full release. While some look simply outstanding, you'll notice that upon death some will take on the textures from other creatures. This becomes more of an issue when there are more enemies on the screen, with some of the largest enemies often disappearing in the middle of a battle, or sometimes knocking the player through the ground into a never-ending fall. At their best, the creatures and enemies do appear to be on par with those featured in Skyrim, but at their worst they kind of look similar to those in Morrowind running on a barebones PC.

As I stated earlier, there isn't much of a narrative to the game outside of some minor tasks given at the opening such as eat, drink, and essentially survive as long as possible within the game world. I chose to start a new character and just work my way north looking for something of interest. While you will occasionally come across a friendly NPC, they rarely have anything noteworthy to say or do aside from offer a minor XP bump for killing them. Some would say trying to survive is enough gameplay for them, but I prefer a bit more of a story from a game, even if it's a minimal one.

In the pre-release, I found the survival mechanics to be a bit brutal, which is still the case when playing by default settings. Now when playing solo or in co-op, you can set up your game to suit your skill or lack thereof, which works when playing PvE, but on the PvP end of the spectrum it makes an unforgiving game even more difficult. After jumping into games to only be killed repeatedly after spawning I opted to play solo. This made the experience more enjoyable, but also took much of the challenge away. Sadly, once you've started, you cannot tweak these settings, which would have made finding a proper middle ground more attainable.

The game world is huge and ripe for exploring, with new locals being added to your map as you come across them, giving the player the option to highlight specific areas on the map using icons or names of their choosing. Sadly, there is no quick travel or option to make the markers appear on the in-game HUD, making navigation tricky and cumbersome. Adding insult to injury, your only option for respawning at death is the starting point of the game, unless you are lucky enough to setup a bed to rest in or found a structure at some point in your journey. The game fails to tell you this in any meaningful way, which means your first death will likely be a devastating one.

Logic says that just building stuff more frequently would help this, right? Well, this mechanic is a chore, as building is far from intuitive. You'll be given an idea of the size of the piece you’ll be working with similar to Fallout 4; however, nine times out of ten, you won't be able to place anything for some unexplained reason. Most of the other mechanics featured in the game are just as cumbersome, if not worse. Combat is a crapshoot if your attacks will even land, with many creatures or enemies being invincible while others die by you simply looking at them. The same can be said for crafting, as the game seems to ignore your full inventory of items needed and requires you to exit and re-enter the menu repeatedly to get the option of creating the item. Naturally, this is all done while being open to attack from lingering enemies. Since weapons and items can rarely be looted or found, crafting is a huge part of the game and will be required to keep up on your armor and weapons.

With so many great RPGs on the market that offer a wealth of content and level of polish Conan Exiles will likely never achieve, it is hard to recommend this title. With its presentation and poor mechanics hidden behind some slick trailers, this is nothing more than a free-to-play game hiding behind a retail price point.

So you set off into this world to simply survive.
This is a survival game, and one that I found to actually feel unique.
The survival aspects of this game can be described by saying it’s a simple mess..
this is all about recourse gathering and then combinging recourses to create new items…
and I love how easy it is to find simple food like bugs and materials..
your basic survival needs are extremely accessable and its up to you to take those basics and explore the lands, leveling up and working your way towards better items..
You can choose to play this game like a mincearft where youre creating shelter and use it as a base, going out to gather items and come back…
This is made easy thanks to this game not being some procedurally generated garbage…
this is a beautifully hand crafted map with secrets caves, caverns, and bosses to encounter..
reminding me a bit of skyrim at times..
a survival based skyrim game.. sounds great doesn’t it?
    on paper yes..
But again this game is just a mess..
Theres just too much going on here under the hood, not enarly as much as a game like ark.. but I stil found it all to be overwhelming..
I felt leveling up and earning points to dump into my stats and unlock new items to craft was frequent enough to keep the game feeling rewarding as id play
but the crafting menus and recourses needed to craft certain items just felt like too much work to me..
itsn ot like a Minecraft where things are as simple as knowing you need a certain material, go to a biodome on rare occasions where a certain material is found, farm a little until you get what you need and come back..
m,aterials for tools weapons and gear beyonds the basic are too spread out
    theres just too much…
too much in variety of things to collect.. and too much space between them all
im a huge believer in less is more, andi just don’t have the capacity at this stage in my life to keep track of hundreds of different materials… on top of that if youre not playing offline and on easy mode, youre going to die way quick.. I feel like the game almost discourages advanced recourse gathing in that way…
gathering food of any consequence is needlessly complicated as well.. it isn’t as simple as killing an animal and looting its body.. creating a fire and cooking it… you need tools to collect the meat after the kill.. its just not my thing
and again needlessly complicated for how harsh the environment can be on higher difficulties
I want to feel like I can at any moment decide to start a new camp somewhere and not that I have to take my things back to base
and the way the game over complicates things like hunting, I just couldn’t do that here
So the way I chose to play this game was going the more explorer route..
living off of plants, I just wanted to battle the terrains and its inhabitents with the simplest items I could craft that didn’t feel like a math equation…
and I had a decent amount of fun doing this…
laying down a bed as I felt I made progress so I would respawn there if I would die.. and just keep the simplest materials on me at all times to be able to fend for myself if I ran into any hostiles..
which this world is full of..
    from giant spiders to people..
    enemies are everywhere…
I actually really loved the combat mechanics in this game, theyre very third person action witcher dark suls style of attacking blocking and dodging, I most of the time felt like If I took damage in a fight it was my fault..
however not all of the time..
this game definitely suffers from performance issues.. especially during battle..
the game will lag a bit, frames will drop and youll be taking damage from seemingly nothing
enemies can also spawn ontop of you out of nowhere..
its makes for a nice scare.. but it also makes for some frustrating moments when your character instrantly dies from a giant spider spawning ontop of them and now that giant spider is guaring y our dead corpse with all of your materials on it.
I also found it pretty annoying that after killing enemies you oculdnt take their weapons or gear..
whats the point of righting them then?
The combat system doesn’t feel risk reward.. it feels just there for survival which quickly brought down the enjoyment and excitement of exploring for me…
Conan Exiles is a decent survival game..
if things were simpler it would even be a good one…
but they aren’t so it isn’t..
this is a game though that i don’t think anyone that isn’t really into survival games would enjoy..
    I give Conan Exiles
    a 6/10

I was given an Xbox One review copy, so my experience may differ from those other versions. In Conan Exiles, you get to customize your own character who is banished to the desert, to die for crimes they may or have not commit. Character customization is rather plentiful and offers many interesting choices. You can of course customize your looks, but also your voice, religion, and race. Once you finish the customization process, Conan the Barbarian frees you and you're off to start your survival adventure! The first hour or so of playing the game is really confusing and troublesome, the game don't hold your hand too much. You yourself must learn how to craft weapons, food, and clothing to be able to survive the harsh fictional world of Conan. The lands are filled with many dangerous terrains and enemies, so you need to adapt quickly in order to survive. Enemies can range from animals like crocodiles and gorillas, to rather stronger enemies such as troll creatures and large monsters. Some enemies require stronger weapons to take down, so a pickaxe my not always be the best decision. As the difficulty advances, you have must too. The map is rather massive, so different areas contain different food and resources. Overall, the game-play is what you would typically expect in an open world survival game, but the many different environments and enemies, keep the game engaging.

Performance: Conan Exiles graphical aspects can look decent at times, and mediocre at others. For example, the environments generally look good and detailed, however everything besides that, looks half baked. Characters and enemies lack in graphical detail, and I know graphics aren't everything but it can actually be an eyesore in this case. Hair for most characters, looks un-renderd and almost silly. You got a lush jungle environment but your character sometimes looks as he is a rushed model. The lip syncing is also pretty bad. Almost always, words don't match with lip movement at all. It takes away from the adventurous feel. I played the game for a solid amount of time, and the frame is always an issue. There is a hefty amount of frame rate drops, sometimes it froze the game for a bit. For example, you jump, it may take a good amount of seconds to get down. Framerate drops and dips were the only bugs I have experienced so far. However, these need to be fixed soon, I know opened world games always contain bugs, but at least make it so I can play the game at a constant framerate.

ETC: There is also the option to play online with friends or on servers. You can also rent a server if you want to play privately with some friends. There are a decent amount of servers to choose from, so have fun with it. However, I personally prefer to play alone.

Overall: Overall, I believe Conan Exiles is a decent open world game that delivers on the survival promise. The game offers many challenges are test your wits of survival. The graphics are kind of disappointing for Xbox One standards, however most of my negativity comes from the games technical problems. These really need to be fixed and do affect the game-play, and can make it not fun at times. I give Conan Exiles a 6 out of 10. The game-play is decent overall, I have no problems with that. However, it's the technical aspects that make me weigh the score down.

    Great survival game!

I played this some months ago on PC, glad it finally came to PS4. Nice expansions of the game with the new areas, and after they improved the combat it is awesome. I was a bit annoyed that there was a shortage of public servers, but I joined a private one which turned out to pretty cool with some real PvP action.

In this particular version of the Conan the barbarian, the world was too dull and unpolished to lure me in. The crafting system – while confusing – is unquestionably deep, which enabled me to build some cool things in an environment that offered no true variety or immersion.
