The saddest part about this game isn't that its another re-skin of previous franchises.
The saddest part about it isn't that the story is almost identical to Advanced Warfare, and that the gameplay is Titanfall's retarded cousin.
The saddest part is that we all believed this one would be different. We thought we were going to get something genuinely special.

    We were wrong.

I want my money back, this is the worst history I even see in COD history. Poor multiplayer, so much bugs and poor texture, I am comeback to Battlefield.

I think we all hoped Black Ops III would hail a new era for the Call of Duty franchise. Unfortunately, a mixture of dodgy and slightly clunky feeling movement mechanics, age-old issues and drag and drop ideas from other franchises has left this Call of Duty feeling cobbled together and inconsistent, although the graphics really do help this game achieve the 5 I gave it. The campaign tries to do something special with it's story, allowing for 4 player co-op, a new special ability upgrade system and even character customization but ultimately it all falls apart. The story is downright confusing, and is clearly designed for Black Ops IV leaving an unsatisfying conclusion, the 4 player co-op is nice - but why bother when you've got the far superior zombie mode? The various upgrades and custom classes in the campaign is nice, but really it's just an extension of what was achieved in Black Ops 2. In fact, i'd go so far to say that this is a step BACKWARDS for the franchise. Black Ops II had branching storylines, tactical strike force missions and the whole thing felt epic and well thought out with an, admittedly, over the top story - all of that is gone in Black Ops III, with a linear, confusing story replacing it. What a shame. And you can play it all again with zombies! (I'd highly recommend Nightmares mode though, it makes more sense than the normal campaign)

On to multiplayer, and this year Treyarch attempts to spice things up by introducing Specialists. Playable characters that have their own backstories and each have an ability or weapon that you can choose from. However, I found these more annoying than beneficial. Finally getting your death machine (sorry, Scythe) and losing it after dying was ragequit inducing rather than fun. In the end, I just rocked with the Commando Lunge knife called the "Ripper" because it was the one you earned fastest. There's very little tactical counterplay between specialists, it's just pick one and annihilate. Also some of them specialists are just plain bad ideas that, in Call of Duty fashion, somehow make it into the final game - for example, there is one specialist, Nomad, who has a 6-round unavoidable trip-mine grenade launcher and a "Final Stand" specialist ability. Why? No idea - but the team at Treyarch thought (incorrectly) that it would be a good idea. Other than that, it's largely Black Ops II with thruster packs. Seriously. Pick 10 is back. Scorestreaks are back. Did they reinvent Scorestreaks and add some exciting new ones to fit in with the 2065 setting? Nope. They are literally copy and paste from Black Ops II. There's maybe 5 new Scorestreaks? Unacceptable for a 3 year development game. While I appreciate the Pick 10 system, I still do not understand why a smoke grenade is the same value as a Light Machine Gun - it makes certain things completely void because nobody will use them. Customization in this game is limited, with each specialist character having their own outfits... with two variations of outfit... each with around 6 different colour schemes. Yeah, it's that basic. However, I do appreciate the Paintshop and Gunsmith options - they're pretty cool ideas and worked out well - though I wish my named gun was shown during a match. Something I don't appreciate however is Unlock Tokens, these essentially block you from unlocking everything FORCING you to prestige if you want to experience the whole game. What an awful idea.

Finally on to zombies, and - well, for 3 years... it isn't great. They've added a new "Gobblegum" system that gives you temporary perks which is a cool idea but, for the powerful ones, you have to spend Liquid Divinium's to spin a Vat which gives you a random one, which is used up if you eat it in game. Unfortunately, this was a ploy to sell you Liquid Divinium's because you can now buy them with real life cash. The zombie map, Shadows of Evil, is okay. It has a surprisingly steep learning curve and it has the amazing ability of making not want to play zombies because of it. To Pack a Punch, you need to do 4 "Survive in a certain area" type challenges, kill 3, 3-headed monsters that can one hit you and gather some worms. It's too difficult for the casual audience and makes the game unnecessarily difficult, which puts you off playing the game.

To conclude, Black Ops III is a mediocre game that has a lot of content, but not much quality. If you can get it cheap, and I mean cheap, it's worth picking up - otherwise don't bother.

Which is unfortunate, because Black Ops III deserves criticism, but not just because it's another Call of Duty game. I'll admit it's a factor, but that doesn't earn the game an immediate 0. Let's start with the negatives, that have been ignored in favor of the aforementioned or otherwise blindly glossed over.

This game has the worst multiplayer servers in the series, to the point that it's nearly unplayable. It's not unusual to be disconnected five times in a row. Host migrations almost always fail. Lobbies full of players but never start a match. Random and frequent lag spikes to 400 ping regardless of your connection speed. I once played ten minutes in game for what should have amounted to an hour. -2 for playability.

The single-player campaign is also easily the worst in the series. It's obvious that they just included it because they had to. Nonsensical plot, meaningless enemies, nonexistant effort put into this at all. If you've ever tried to get into it, I pity you. -2 for including this half-ass throwaway of a campaign.

Now for the positives. This is the best Zombies experience there is, on par with and built over the original experience in World at War. Diverse maps, great gameplay, complex mechanics that actually require some forethought, and an interesting wrap up to the background storyline to boot. +2 for impressing me on this part of the game, and -1 for deliberately putting the best parts of BO3 in $60 DLC.

The multiplayer gameplay itself is surprisingly good too, but the unreliability of the servers effectively cancel this out. The specialists and movement system keep things varied enough, and the new game modes like Safeguard are more than welcome. Relatively balanced gunplay. All in all it's still fun with a friend, and that's also the only reason I play it, if only to pass the time waiting to find a real match.

And yes, -2 for being another COD game. Starting at an 8/10 is more than fair. We all know the series has been milked, but compared to the immediate previous games in this series, BO3 is definitely a standout title. I'd even say that I'd rather play this than MW3 or BO2, and I'd rank BO3 above either of them.

Zombies is more of the same, and there's only ONE map. Lord knows Treyarch is going to shake you down for another 50 bucks via the season pass so you can get what is almost a complete experience there.

Multiplayer is an absolute **** with short TTK's and ludicrously out-of-control parkour movement mechanics combining into a **** of acrobatic instakill **** Killstreak diversity has been trimmed down instead of expanded, the guns all perform the same giving players little incentive to try different ones, specialist abilities only add to the imbalance since they recharge automatically and charges carry over through death, the maps are generally poor in layout and design, and the spawn system is absolutely completely broken, with enemies spawning in droves right in front of your eyes.

This game isn't even worth being put in the bargain bin. It belongs in the city landfill with the rest of humanity's refuse. It's so bad that it's actually insulting to anyone who paid full price for a copy.

I was absolutely astonished & amazed at just how bad this game was.

First of all, the Performance: Immediately from the first few moments of the campaign you will notice the game struggles to reach 30fps you will get 20-45 fps across the campaign. Considering the resolution is barely any more than 720p the frame rate a joke. AW didn't hit 1080p on XBO but still had a better resolution

Considering the resolution is barely any more than 720p the frame rate a joke. AW didn't hit 1080p on XBO but still had a better resolution and a consistent 60fps.

Now lots of games on consoles are still stuck at 30fps, that's fine, but BO3 clearly aims for 60 and fails to reach it at any point in the campaign. I wish it just stuck with 30fps, it would of maybe been able to stick with it.

The framerate constantly dropping from 45 to 20 up and down gives you a massive headache, more so when all the games cut scenes are locked at 30, when it is smooth & you go to open a door & your character interacts with it, its noticeable and really does hurt your eyes.

Graphics: Looks notably worse than AW, clearly the developers don’t understand XBO hardware or architecture due to just how bad this game looks with the performance it brings. You can't blame the PS4 or XBO when AW looked so much better at a higher framerate and resolution.

The campaign story is taken right out of an old terrible B-movie script; It's shameful it's set in the same universe as black ops 2 which had a far better story in comparison. The story barely references the previous 2 games and instead goes on about AI and machines taking over, so that leads to gameplay.

Gameplay: Terrible AI, no stealth segments, boring enemies to fight, fighting robots reminded me of Star Trek Elite force fighting Species 8472, easy-to-kill enemies that charge for you and you easily kill before they get close then explode in visually terrible effects.

You may have noticed I’ve tried to break up my review here in bits but they keep leaking into each other, every bad thing about this game makes something else bad worse.

Split screen: I played a good long session with a friend via split screen one night, it was on a 1366x768 TV and even on that I could tell the game was more blurry then my other games, the kill feed, you know the text on the hud that says who was killed by who and by what, yea, could not even read that, it was so pixelated I couldn't even make out my own gamertag.

Multiplayer: Thankfully the only good part of the game is that multiplayer sticks to 60fps, but it's at a cost of looking even worse than the campaign & it’s still at a low resolution, I wouldn't even call it a positive as we all expect a cod game to be 60fps anyway.

I really didn't play the multiplayer enough to compare to previous cods all that much, thankfully lots more review here have done, all I can say is, after mine and my friends session on BO3, the next week we had a session on AW and it was far more fun, more fluid, better looking & just better all around.

Long story short, it's a failure, they could not get it to run at an acceptable level, It's broken, the fact they shipped this game in its current state is an insult to consumers.

Don't waste your money, buy AW again if you traded it in or buy the season pass, you will have far more fun, or get the old ps3/xb360 out go back onto black ops 2, it's a much better game & looks better at 1080p!

Fighting within is a stupid concept that devs have clinged to and its old and played out.

Also, the maps are really boring and grab your tent because once again there's plenty of camping. The weapons have a cheap feel and sound to them too. After about a half hour of playing this I was bored and couldn't wait to go back to playing Advanced Warfare.
Personally I don't see why some reviewers are bashing Advanced Warfare and praising this trash. AW finally breathed some life into a franchise that was getting stale. It has great graphics, good sized maps and plenty of fast, fluid action and some new and interesting weapons. Who doesn't love being able to boost slam or rabbit punch for a kill once in awhile?! Better than the same old same old. People that complain about the Exo suits and flying around are a bunch of whiners that couldn't get past the fact that they couldn't camp on most of the maps.
If AW and Black Ops III were amusement rides then AW would be a roller coaster and Black Ops III would be a merry go round. Personally I like roller coasters..
My advice is stay away from this one.

The CoD series is at its best when it builds the world and sets the scene with patience and discipline. In MW1 you sneak through the forest and crest the hill just to see the nukes launch, headed for the U.S. and suddenly the race is on. In MW2 you trudge through the sewers of a gulag and breach the walls to come head to head with your old friend Capt Price.

BO3 has none of that nuance, and Activision has convinced itself that what the game needs is more bad guys and bigger spectacles. Between hordes of stupid AI enemies, drones, and bionic spells, it's impossible to figure out what BO3 is going for. In the original CoD you fought off Nazis from the back of a truck with a 0.50 cal, in BO3 you fight off advanced assault mechs from...the back of a truck, with a 0.50 cal. The plot is convoluted and the multiplayer is Titanfall lite.

Modern Warfare embodied the spirit of its villain Makarov, who uttered "It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict. Just the will of a single man." as the game pitted you as a rifleman in the midst of vast chaos. BO3 on the other hand, thinks that the will of a single man is nowhere near enough, and instead requires a vast arsenal of useless gizmos and gadgets to get anything done. The result is a bloated mess that gets in the way of a series that once had such great storytelling.

Whoever the idiot is that came up with lag compensation needs to be fired, but even then, other games that have it are at least playable. Activision is too dumb and money-focused to realize that no one has liked any of their games since they implemented it, with the exception of BO2 (which I love, but admit that it still doesn't work right). The multiplayer is atrocious with every match lagging and host disconnecting and hackers flooding you offline if you get them on any kind of win streak. I am not a fan boy of PS4 and I am very disappointed that Xbox dropped the ball with the Early DLC access and the Better multi - player experience. Let me get this out of the way first, I DON"T CARE ABOUT CAMPAIGN. There that's done. No. on to the good bits. I find myself enjoying this game the more I play it. The game is fast paced, camping doesn't seem to be much of a problem, the connection is almost always rock solid, and the movement system is a HUGE step up from AW. Zombies is OK, but if want a really good experience, then your going to have to search for a tutorial. I would recommend this game If you have a bad taste from AW because this game is not AW. While it's not different, it does everything 10x better. Expand

I have been a huge fan of COD for years. Ever since COD 2 I would feel like I am going into a real battle with real bullets flying at me. Shooting real guns and throwing real grenades. Now all this futuristic stuff is really wearing on me. What has happened to this franchise. I bought this game on release and haven't put more than 10 hrs into it. The multiplayer is so bad. "Special abilities" WTAF. Wall running? Gay! I am so disappointed and as I can see here so are most people. Please release a WWII or a Vietnam game. What ever happened to camouflage. Claymore mines. Sniping in the grass or in a tree. If I want a futuristic game I would play Halo or Destiny. I cannot believe I paid $100 for this game and I never play it. My friends do not even try to convince me to play it because they do not play it. I can't even sell it because I got the digital copy. I feel like I have been hosed thinking it would be another BLACK OPS which it didn't even come close. Mark my words. The next company that comes out with a WWII or Vietnam game will be on top. Now I have been a fan of zombies since the beginning and the remake of Der Riese is amazing. The Shadows of Evil really blew so hard. It made me want to quit playing zombies. I mean there is soooo much to do to even open the pack a punch. Why not get some fan based help with these games. Treyarch has fallen off. It is going to be tough to come back from this one. I wish the Developers would at least read the reviews and work on making a fun and exciting game that gets your heart pumping like it used to be. Can't wait for Battlefield 5 and I used to be strictly COD but I have turned to a more realistic game that makes me feel like I am really there. Futuristic is really played out. Please help us. We need a good game. Expand

Poorly written mess of a campaign, lack of variety with the zombies mode offering, poorly balanced multiplayer with higher level players being given way too much advantage. Servers are also a complete mess causing disconnections, resets and flat out console crashes often. The zombie campaign is awful too, if you're going to add something at least make it half way decent.

    Another year,

    Platform : Xbox one

Basically a reskin of Black Ops 2 with one or two extra's. Once you have played the baffling campaign you get to access nightmares, which is a campaign with zombie enemies. A nice touch. I give it one point for this. I also give it one point for zombies, always fun. The last point goes for having up to 4 players on campaign. But everything else is pretty dire.

Incredibly bad net code. Lags like nothing on the box. I have 60mb fibre broadband with open NAT. Black ops sets you to moderate if the port it wants isn't available. Matching is a nightmare with frequent disconnects from the main menu! Campaign AI is awful, The whole game is a mishmash of borrowed ideas on a tired formula with a poor engine. I mean 6vs6 in team deathmatch?? Battlefield is 32 a side and 50 times larger maps.

I think its time to either hang up your pistols on this franchise, or at least come up with a new build from the ground up. The playability of this game is hampered by lag at every juncture. In fact 64 player Battlefield 4 has less lag than 6v6 game on cod, even with multiple nationalities. If you are English, one American or Frenchie in the lobby and its jerk of duty. Once you train yourself to aim a half inch ahead you don't do to bad, except where you die then a guy appears afterwards.

I haven't bought a COD since Black Ops 2 on the 360. I thought I'd give it another go. I cannot express how thoroughly disappointed I am with this wasted opportunity.

I cannot recommend this title. Keep playing battlefield 4 or Modern warfare 2. This game is a turgid bag of poorly executed borrowed ideas and offers a poor gaming experience.

I feel that Black Ops 2 was the more superior game, and that Modern Warfare 2 is still the pinnacle of the series, followed by CoD4 and Black Ops 1. After playing it for a few hours I don't think I’ll go back again, every inch of the game reeked of mediocrity. The guns have no oomph and feel plastic, the maps are garish and just not very well-designed, lag-compensation is still an issue, and while the movement is fast I am not a fan of futuristic boost-jumping. On the plus side, the customization is good, but that doesn’t make up for a game that still pales massively to the original games. CoD has lost its way and it just comes across as being desperate to satisfy teenagers with dwindling attention spans. Expand

A great game despite its flaws. The campaign could be more but still manages to be a great experience if you look past the first few missions. Multiplayer is a blast and makes up for the inadequacies found in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. If you're a fan of Call of Duty, this will appeal to you. While the formula doesn't take risks, it still works.

If you play CoD for the campaign, Black Ops III is a low point featuring a confusing and uninteresting story, poor pacing, cheesy dialogue and over-the-top voice acting that results in a story that resembles what the outcome would be if you dropped the cast of Team America: World Police on the set of Inception or Source Code.

Treyarch may not always hit its targets, but this remains a genuinely fresh take on an old sub-series in an even older franchise. A game as well-oiled as its cyborgian characters. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
