I’m a massive fan of arcade style retro game’s, so to say I was looking forward to Bush Hockey League would be a massive understatement. Thankfully sometimes it scratches my itch, but I must admit that quite a lot of the time the fun can be outweighed by the game’s problems. Thankfully sometimes it scratches my itch, but I must admit that quite a lot of the time the fun can be outweighed by the game’s problems. The gameplay when in full flow can be very enjoyable and I think they’ve done the fast fluid style very well, but it does still suffer with some problems. The biggest problem for me was the AI that’s on your team. Your AI teammates do little to help you and they always seem to hinder you, which makes things become very frustrating especially when you already have to deal with a high difficulty and sluggish controls. I did however appreciate the inclusion of different control schemes and I did find a particular set-up that did make things a little easier. I would however have liked a better tutorial to explain the different schemes, but unfortunately the tutorials that are present are a little lacklustre to say the least. There isn’t many modes for you to sink your teeth into, but the story mode was actually pretty fun. I enjoyed the story mode because it has a lot of humour placed in certain areas and the best thing is that the humour was actually funny. Unfortunately though only having a couple of modes means the game’s replay value is very low, which is a shame. The presentation side of the game is awesome in every way. Visually the game has a great retro look to it and the visuals combine perfectly with the fun soundtrack and the decent commentary that’s included. At the end of the day I appreciate what they’ve tried to do with Bush Hockey League, and in some ways it does bring back some pleasant memories but in the end it just has too many problems which ultimately harms the fun factor. I will say though that it does have potential and with a few patches I can see it getting better, but the problems it currently has may be a bit too much for some. Thankfully though the price is fair enough and I could see myself recommending it when some things have been sorted out, but for now I recommend that you wait. Expand

The basic function of the game works, but it’s all wrapped up in a package that is lacking in most areas. That said, grab some friends and beer and you’ve probably got a few hours of fun here.

Bush Hockey League is a game that seems perfect on the surface. Bring back simplistic hockey games that focused on arcade-style play. The bumbling story mode and lack of online play really hurt it. This game is best enjoyed in small doses with friends on a couch, which is not the ideal form of play anymore. Hitting Xbox One so late after it released on PC and during the busiest time of the year means most people will likely not even notice it came and went. Still, there is fun to be had.

From the grind of a seemingly pointless Story, and the one off hits of an even more pointless Exhibition Game, you won’t find much to keep anyone other than the most ardent of hockey fans from going back - and even then it’s never going to have much of an appeal over the NHL games that are out there. By all means give it a shot with a mate or two, but the repetition will soon win over the day.
