While there is always a place for a new side-scrolling beat ’em up in the world, Brutal Rage on Xbox One will only scratch a fan’s itch for a little while, with the addition of some two player couch co-op delivering a little more welcome fun. With the shortcomings it has though, this is ultimately a game that will eventually succumb to a sucker punch, left flat on its back as other more vibrant fighters trample all over it.

Brutal Rage does share some basic common themes with other games of this genre, but seems to lack the overall appeal and replay value due to its repetitiveness and absence of variety in gameplay and development. Perhaps, with some slight alterations, it could potentially transform into something rather enjoyable and entertaining, but in its current condition it just feels like a very dull and lengthy demo. It has promise, but is missing the unique qualities that would make it distinctive, such as an expansion of the above mentioned fight-talk-walk game mechanics or any development of the original concepts. Thank goodness for the local co-op option making it much more motivating and rewarding to play as a team and share the endurance of surviving the inescapably drawn-out captions!

Looking to be a Streets of Rage Clone, the 8bit sidescroller has a way to go before it meets its' spiritual predecessor. The game overall does exactly what it set out to do. You scroll through level after level punching, kicking, and beating people with various objects. You have three playable characters, one has to be unlocked. The option to Couch Co-Op is a nice break from the repetitive beatings dished out alone. The writing feels to me that it was deliberately campy, and weak, in an attempt to recreate the limited stories and smaller text bubbles from games of old. Much like the games from the SNES and SEGA Genesis era, every enemy has a name beside their health bar. Unfortunately, this is about where it falls off. The game feels sluggish, walking is slow, running isn't much better. Your moves are heavy and the animations are drawn out. These two elements remove a lot of the satisfaction of bashing peoples' heads in repeatedly. Repetitive, even as that's how these games are meant to be, there isn't enough variety in the gameplay, creating a stale environment after the first few stages. Brutal Rage isn't the finest in its genre, but it does deliver a few punchlines along its path. Expand
