Seriously?! How about the title of the game?!?! . People have too much thin skin these days! Big babies! And this guy @Gerald19 is complaining about a thin story and poor pace. How about playing the game longer before coming to a quick conclusion? He also says Randy should be fired and Gearbox should do a diversity hire. Reeeealllllly?! He's the owner, he started Gearbox and he shouldn't be fired. The game is great, you have to give it some time and if you're complaining about it, then you have a negative, bratty agenda. I can't believe that they ruined the borderlands franchise like this :( Terrible writing, terrible graphics, terrible gameplay... it doesn't feel like they tried at all, it fells like a halfassed version of BL2 instead of a proper sequel :(

I'm sure one of you is real, and to you, I am genuinly sorry for you. I can honestly say that after beating the game, (mind you I'm not even in the end game which is where grindy loot games get fun) this is the same old borderlands I knew and loved. Which is great. It's exactly what I wanted it to be.

We've experienced minor but no game-breaking bugs. Performance is fine with performance mode on my X, and he hasn't complained on his base Xbox Elite.

On the downside for playing with kids, while you can turn off much of the gore in settings, there is no option to filter the language. I don't think there are f-bombs, but I've heard basically everything else.

This is my first Borderlands experience and on the Xbox One X and it is freaking GORGEOUS. Most of the game runs at a smooth 60 fps in performance mode. There are some big performance drops in later levels, but it didn't affect my gameplay at all.

The graphics, music, guns, levels, everything was awesome. Who seriously gives a crap about story when you have a Diablo like FPS game here? What boggles my mind is that people give this a low scores because of the story, when in fact MOST GAMES HAVE CRAPPY STORIES, ESPECIALLY loot games like these. Sorry, but this is all about the gameplay. And if anyone has even played a recent Nintendo game, they would know those games are basically only about gameplay ever, with little to no story (Mario? Lol)

So if you like addicting gameplay and good voice acting, nonstop action and unlimited lootable items and always upgrading your character, you will love this game. The bonus here imo is the story, because there are tons of cool characters and dialogue and what not.

From a conceptual design standpoint, I don't think Borderlands has ever been better. When it works, the shooting, moving, phase lifting, minion launching and mech-suiting has never been better.
    When it works.

Frame rate is obviously the kicker here. I'm playing on one of the old Xbox Ones and there have been times when my frame rate has dropped between zero and one FPS. I'm saying it's looked like my game has frozen because so many frames were dropped before. It's rough. It made me mad a couple times, but my last few sessions have been better and I hear Gearbox is focusing on fixing performance first. This game isn't totally forgiven for shipping as a game that sometimes turns into a barely interactive slideshow, but the game when it works is so good, it brings it up. There are also the usual Borderlands issues: everyone wants to talk at once so a real story beat will be undercut by a sidequest NPC shouting about how there are still guards outside his window because you drove too close to his quest on the way to your actual destination, enemies will drop and get stuck behind some geometry that makes them harder to find, sentences will run-on. There's also one glitch that has actually been working out for me: sometimes I get multiples of a reward weapon from missions. This means I can share it if my build is better than my teammate's or I can sell one and keep the other. It's been great, but it shouldn't happen. These are small gripes. I haven't encountered anything that "breaks" the game beyond the frame issue.

Now I want to celebrate the things this game gets right.

Creative Gunplay: Borderlands 2 had a zillion skins on guns that all behaved depressingly similarly. Borderlands 3 has a zillion skins for guns that behave in at least a couple dozen different ways. Malwian makes guns that you charge before firing, letting out a massive laser blast. Atlas guns let you paint targets with one projectile for your smart bullets to target with the other. There are guns that have splash damage and leave damaging puddles behind. There are sniper rifles that give you the option to slow your character down, but give you insane shot stability as a tradeoff. For a while, I used a legendary that turned into a brain robot when reloaded that would hunt down and detonate on enemies. The guns are good.

Movement: I feel like everyone's going to touch on this, but sliding, mantling and ground slamming make for a much more fluid combat experience. Enemies move more fluidly too, and their hitboxes are more in line with what you would expect than they were in BL 1 and 2. Also, you can knock enemies back with explosions or shotguns, meaning you can launch enemies over railings then follow them over and ground pound on them. It's great. when you get momentum going in a fight, you feel unstoppable.

Hateable Villains: The Calypso Twins suck. They're obnoxious, insincere, prideful, manipulative and naive all at the same time. They also have a cool look and can actually be kind of funny, or at least, funny things happen around them and they react in a funny way. It's never endearing enough to make me not want to supermurder them for all the wrong they do, but it's entertaining. Tyreen especially gives off the sense that she's actually formidable. This is something Handsome Jack and Forgettable von Steele struggled with. Jack was hateable and charismatic, but when it came time to fight him, it felt like they padded a weakling human enemy's health pool to make the fight longer than .04 seconds. Meanwhile, I had honestly forgotten that Steele was a siren until I started writing this, but Tyreen makes an impression on you with her displays of power and never lets you forget how strong she is for the entire story. I don't think I like the twins better than Jack, but they get some things right that he didn't.

Awe-Inspiring Action Skills: It's never been this hard to choose between the four hunters. This is due mostly to the fact that each hunter is hugely customization. If you like up-close brawling, you might gravitate immediately to Amara with her phase slam, but maybe you what you were actually looking for was a Moze with pneumatic fists attached to each of Iron Bear's arms. Zane can be as much of a long-range sniper as Fl4k or almost as much of a tank as Moze. Everyone's skills have these modular augments that take the 12(ish) base action skills and make them fully customization so no two build need be exactly alike. Oh, and they all nuke the battlefield, too.

In summary, Borderlands 3 exists as the best Borderlands yet, and one of the best shooters ever, somewhere underneath a sewer of performance issues. I've had a ton of fun in spite of them, but they've been impossible to ignore. I strongly recommend the game if you liked the first two, but it's going to try your patience in its current state no matter who you are.

Borderlands 3 is a ton of fun, it's improved in every possible way. It's great to see a sequel change and improved so much. I'm beginning to wonder if games that take too long to produce from earlier versions end up being worse in the long run. I'll admit, first of all, that I never played Borderlands 2, so this is fresh start in the series for me, but I have seen the other versions streamed quite a bit, so I knew what I was getting into, or so I thought.

I generally enjoy shooter-looter games, so this fits into my typical gameplay. I've been playing Destiny for some time, for better or worse, COD, The Division 1 & 2, etc. There are a few things I would define as essential to good gameplay in this genre: 1. Solid gun dynamics 2. Fairly intuitive map navigation 3. Good UI design.

Borderlands fails miserably at all three. Not just one, but all three. The guns are random but aside from small symbols on them that indicate what type of fire they provide, there is no good way to understand what type of gun you're getting or how it will perform. Worse, when you do get a gun you like, even with aim-assist, shooting is imprecise at best. It feels loose and without a good sense of impact.

The map. Atrocious. I'm not sure what savant can navigate this easily but there are not good road markers or lines to follow across complicated maps when driving to your destination. Just a floating diamond that isn't always visible and related to the landscape makes your choice of approach a crap shoot. Mostly you run/drive around like an idiot in the dark, so to speak, until you sort it out, which makes a basic part of gameplay diminish the game itself.

The UI is equally bad. Multiple types of super panels to choose from with endless descriptions with no real guidance on how to make choices. Getting points to level these up takes forever. 1 point per level or so, and there appear to be at least 25 points per panel, and five panels per super to choose from. That doesn't count the clunky way you select and retain guns or bombs.

On top of the basics the storyline is **** You're driven in a fairly linear fashion toward these evil twins without anything but a basic understanding of why they are bad. It's peppered with cut scenes that you cannot skip! It's a game people, not a movie. I'm tired of game designers acting like frustrated movie directors. The interactions are the standard kill an array of bad things until you get to a boss. Kill the boss, stir and repeat. Unbelievably boring.

Overall, for all their faults (and there are many) Destiny and Division 2 lay waste to this game. I didn't even mention the left-stick driving for cars which is super counter-intuitive, the lockin in a character choice (you get to pick one of four and then your'e stuck with that for good without ever being able to try them out), and the plethora of third-grade humor and cardboard characters.

Earlier this year I made the mistake of buying Rage 2. I returned it. Borderlands 3 feels very, very similar to Rage 2 except worse, which would have been hard for me to imagine prior to a few days ago. After 12 hours of gameplay I couldn't take it anymore and deleted the game from my Xbox.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Optimization aside, I believe that Borderlands 3 has brought its A-game, improving in almost every area possible. Story-wise, this is obviously all up to preference, but I found the villains to be entertaining and a threat to our vault haunters, but they definitely don't live up to Handsome Jack. That's not to say that the voice acting isn't incredible, I especially enjoyed Tyreen's voice work. In terms of the shooting mechanics, it's a million times better than Borderlands 2's, and I say this as someone who's spent *HOURS* into that game (Maya mains where you at?). Anyways I played the game on the Xbox One X on performance mode, the best way to play it, and have very few qualms with the performance of the game. The frame-rate was noticeably chugging on Sanctuary, but other than that, a pretty flawless experience for me. Expand

Borderlands 3 may not be clever, but it is very big – and above all else, the source of a vast well of over-the-top shooting fun and mayhem. Be thankful that Gearbox refused to reinvent the franchise just for the sake of it. [Issue#183, p.73]

Rather than trying to latch on to current trends, Borderlands 3 stands confident in the fact that there’s still no other game that does exactly what this series does so well. The sheer creativity and inventiveness presented in its arsenal is hard to match, and while the humor may not be for everyone, it keeps the gameplay in perspective as we’re all just here to have a good time. It isn’t as big of a leap forward as Borderlands 2, but it’s well-refined and there’s a lot to experiment with to keep you coming back for more.
