In a world where Cake Bash exists to deliver a multiplayer treat, Beat Me on Xbox is an irrelevance. It's okay in short bursts - and I mean short - and I imagine it would be fun with a group of drunken mates sat around the place, but as we all know, 2020 hasn’t been kind in that regard. That said, this is a game that is hamstrung by its own controls and combat system, and all the clever stages in the world aren’t enough to save it.

Play with comical fantasy characters in a wide variety of fun and surprising environments. Challenge your friends, it makes the experience that much better. Games where you can fight against your friends and risk your friendship by beating them time after time, are always very fun to play. Sadly, in the base gameplay of this game, there’s absolutely no story to be found. The tutorial level lets you get acquainted with the game’s controls in a type of single-player mode that’s way too short. The game’s graphics look quite nice with 2D platforming gameplay in a 3D environment. Each area has its own style for background and platforms that perfectly match the scenery. Beat Me! can be played locally, but only if you have another person to play with. Death matches require more than one player to be present as you can’t add AI enemies to play against.
Beat Me! looks like a game with a lot of potential, and the multiplayer can be quite fun if you have friends to play with. We definitely think that the developers could have gotten a lot more out of the game by adding a single-player mode with some decent story content to sink your teeth into. Give it a go as it's a good price for the admission and well worth it it you have others around to challenge on your Xbox One.
