So far i am having loads of fun with Battleborn. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, not all of the characters are easy to play and some do take some time to learn to be good with them. No the story is not fantastic or long, but if you're buying a game for those reasons, this may not be for you. If you're looking for fantastic game play, fast-paced action and a huge variety of different ways and styles to play the same game in a first person shooter, this is a great game. I honestly look for a game to keep me entertained and that is something this game does just with the fun fast paced game play. There is a way to play for everyone, a character that fits different roles and just experimenting and trying the many different ways to play is a fun task in it self. This is honestly one of the first games that I've played where i am having a good time even losing.

The only thing that bugs me is sometimes getting stuck on random things that you definitely shouldn't get stuck on. Its minor, but if that was fixed i would give a 10.

The humor is spot on and each character has personality. Its funny and fun. I enjoy both aspects of the from story to multiplay. Multiplay takes team effort unlike games like COD, Battleborn requires you to work together to win. If you lone wolf (I have a bad habit of doing that) you will lose. You also have to find a hero you are comfortable with as you can not switch in game until the story or multi play is done. They did include bots for multiplay which is a good way to practice with characters you are not familer with.

If you like Boarderlands you will like this game. You could almost say that this is in the Boarderlands universe. In fact I would love to some some Vault Hunters in Battleborn and vice versa. Forget what you read about Battleborn vs Overwatch being similar. They are not both are two different games and can exist together.

If you have that mindset, I highly suggest watching TotalBiscuit's Youtube video "Battleborn vs Overwatch for Dummies", even if you don't have that mindset it's still a great video explaining the game better than I can here. This game is NOT for everyone. If you are expecting a straight up FPS, you will be disappointed. This is no COD. This is a MOBA, even though it has a full campaign as well. That being said, I believe there is character for almost any type of play style and skill level. If you invest your time in this game and know what you're getting into, especially if you have some friends to play with, you will not regret it. Also, if you don't like Gearbox humor or absolutely hate the aesthetic I'm sorry, but you're missing out because the game is undeniably above average and fresh. Lots of unlocks, lots of loot(acquired in solo play as well as PvP/PvE), lots of fun. (Reviewed on Xbox One) Expand

Not many people are patient enough for that when you have a MOBA like SMITE out there where you can try and rent characters. One major issue is the single player online. Even a private session can disconnect and you can lose all progress which is very frustrating when you are 45 minutes into a mission and the boss has 25% health left (this happened). Expand

I couldn't kill anyone, I died faster than it took me to find an enemy, my team mates were nowhere to be found(honestly, they looked just as lost as I did), the turrets I kept buying were being destroyed faster than I built them , I couldn't level up like the other team was and my other 2 attack abilities made no sense. In fact, the whole game made no sense. I quickly stopped playing because I thought it was stupid and broken...... but I decided to give it another fair shot. And I'm so glad I did.

Therein lies the problem, not only with me, but I also think with many other potential players. I thought I playing a typical FPS(CoD, HALO, Battlefield) with some Borderlands flavor, but Battleborn is much more than a typical FPS. Turns out that Battleborn was a FPS that borrows heavily from MOBA's. It took me a while to figure this out because the tutorials weren't all that helpful to be honest. Once I figured out what style or genre of game I was playing, that's when the game really started to shine imo.

Battleborn has a campaign story that can be played solo or by up to 5 friends or random people and a PvP. Both the campaign and PvP are loaded with the same comedic levity as Gearbox's Borderlands games if you're familiar with those titles.

You cannot play Battleborn like CoD, if you do you will die often. Battleborn is not that kind of game. There is a lot of depth that has to be learned both with the character and within the gameplay mechanics. You don't just pick this game up, play and luck into any success. You have to take your beating before you learn to dole them out in return. There is a big learning curve with this games PvP and you have to be humble enough to learn it all. The nuances of the game play mechanics for game modes like Incursion and Meltdown are not as cut and dry as they seem. There's a lot that's not clearly explained and have to be learned with the "trial by fire" method. But. if you're willing enough to learn how to play Battleborn the payoff's well worth the money in my opinion.

Technically the game is as good as it gets. The controls are tight and responsive. The graphic style is great and reminiscent of Borderlands. The game runs smooth. The collection of Heroes are both diverse,
charming and chalk full of funny dialogue, I don't think I've ever thought that about any game. I cannot recommend this game enough. It is a diamond lost in a sea of misunderstanding and deserves much more credit than it's received. LEARN TO PLAY THIS GAME, it's well worth it

Multiplayer is insanely fun, get a full party and build a balanced team, it can get really competitive. Definitely something new and refreshing when it comes to console shooters. The coop story missions seem bland, but that's because of the skill level. Play the story missions on the harder levels, they take work.

The humor is hit and miss but the character design offers a level of variety I never expected. Pretty much anyone who enjoys FPS games will find a style/character they enjoy. Also the in-match leveling system adds a balance that is missing in a lot of shooters I've played online. I've seen some serious mismatches between certain characters and I've also been on both sides of it myself so it's definitely present. However, good teams react quickly and understand how to maximize their characters' abilities so it hasn't detracted from my experience in the end.

Really was surprised by how good this game is and I'm going to enjoy unlocking the characters and their individual levels as well. If you like fast paced shooters and have been looking for a game offering content galore then this is a must have. Doesn't take itself too seriously and the fun factor of the gameplay can't be overlooked.

I am finding it to be a deeper game than I thought.

At the moment people are just picking random classes so the teams are not gelling that well, but you can see the potential. Get a good Tank/Healer combo and you can dominate. A Rogue who goes out of their way to farm crystals and setup turrets, healing stations etc can be invaluable without even getting a kill. I think the tactics of this game will come out later down the line, at the moment everybody is finding the characters that suit them. And its great even higher levels are not dominating because it's not that sort of game.

Overall a great deal of fun and a lot of learning to do, this game has more depth than I initially gave it credit for and is easy to dismiss at first glance. I think if you liked Borderlands at all, this game is worth a punt. Because it has the same feel to it, crazy characters, good sense of humour and a nice lore of it's own. I was on the fence but don't regret buying it at all.

The moba aspects aren't overwhelming at all unless you play the meltdown mode, where you follow minions to try and lead them to the other goal, or defend your goal. Battleborn hasn’t sold well and extreme price markdowns just after release are a bad sign. Overwatch has stolen BB’s momentum and rightly so. Despite its flaws, OW is a better game. It’s more accessible, runs smoothly, and will get better as Blizzard patches it. Battleborn’s struggle to gain traction will only continue and not all the blame falls on Blizzard’s top-notch marketing.

Although Gearbox is best known for Borderlands, it gained notoriety for Aliens: Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever. Both games were half-assed products. Gearbox and publisher Sega have been sued for blatantly misrepresenting ACM. Gearbox’s reputation has been justifiably damaged, so by the time Battleborn launched, many gamers such as myself were skeptical.

Battleborn is a moba/fps hybrid. It doesn’t do either well. There are multiplayer and co-op components. Co-op can be fun. However, missions are repetitive and players can’t select which ones to complete. Instead, they’re thrown a random pool of 3 missions and must vote on one. If all 3 missions have been completed, players can either withdraw quickly and gamble on different lobbies or stick it out and replay missions. Since matchmaking times are dreadfully slow, there isn’t much payoff on gambling.

The multiplayer component has several problems. Foremost, character animations are sloppy. So close quarters combat doesn’t work well because it’s nearly impossible to distinguish what the heck is going on. That’s a reason moba’s are set in the bird’s eye view perspective. Next, matchmaking is crap. It's unbalanced and slow. As a newcomer, I was regularly pitted against level 60+ players. I also noticed that lobbies more often than not consisted of low ranking randoms against high ranking premade teams. Additionally, I was put against the same high ranking players repeatedly even if I hadn’t played for several days. What the *&^%?

Once matches start, players cannot switch characters. So if players need to rebalance their teams to counter the enemy, tuff toenails. If players drop out of games, they are not replaced. Being down 2 members is a guaranteed loss. Even worse, if players drop out of a match for any reason—I did at first because matches were cluster%#*’s—they are locked out of multiplayer until that match is over. Stats from those games including win/loss are saved. So players can drop out and still get credit for winning. Absolute BS.

High ranking players have huge advantages against new/low level players. So I performed an experiment. I played with randoms for 50 consecutive matches. In all but 2 matches, my team never had a player above level 30. In nearly all games, the enemy team had 1 or more 60+ players. In more than half the games, the enemy team had 2 or more 60+ players. I lost 43 consecutive matches. That’s right. I experienced 43 loses in a row. In one gamemode, the first team to 1,000 wins. In half the games, my team never scored more than 200 points. In 5 games, we scored 50 or less points. I play ever genre of game and I’ve never experienced such crap.

In 15 games, my team voted to surrender. That’s right. Your teammates can vote to quit. In 9 of those games, we trailed the opposing team by only 10%. So my team voted to quit even tho they had a strong possibility turning things around and winning.

Players must earn gear from co-op to use in multiplayer. So newcomers stand no chance of succeeding in multiplayer unless they slog it out in co-op. Also, higher ranking characters have access to more abilities. So newcomers should expect to get creamed if they wanna give multiplayer a go early on. The mandatory tutorial is pointless as it doesn't explain anything which only increases player frustration. There’s no multiplayer mode that pits gamers against bots. I don’t consider co-op combat training. If you never played a moba, BB is not the place to learn.

Performance-wise BB falls short. It was created with Unreal Engine 3, a tried-and-true tool Gearbox has used before. Despite such experience BB runs poorly. Frame rates consistently fall into the teens. Even PC gamers with powerful rigs complain about low frames. Visually, BB is an undemanding game, so low or inconsistent frame rates reek of bad optimization. BB textures appear muddy and everything looks low res. BB looks and plays like a 360/PS3 release.

My verdict should be obvious. Honestly, I can’t say enough bad things about this game. I owned it for 3 weeks and got rid of it. I don’t regret my decision. Like The Division, BB needs to be rebalanced and retooled. But in both cases, the developers don’t have the skillsets to fix their experimental products. Unfortunately for gamers, both experiments failed. Battleborn was DOA. Both fans and the developer need to let it go. Far better games exist.

Each character is wildly unique not only in personality, but play style. Battleborn makes up for the handful of levels provided at launch in that it plays like a new game for every character you attempt to wrestle into mastery. With the quality in character design, game mechanics, and trim, I expect this title to have a sizable following for some time.

There really is not much of a tutorial and it takes a few hours of gameplay to finally get the hang of the controls-which for many players will be agonizing. This game is nothing similar to the Borderland series, The graphics are exceptional and sound is above average but the characters quips during battle get repetitive and stale after a few chapters. Skills can be upgraded in real time during battle, all characters have multiple skins which can be unlocked during gameplay and you can create your own loadouts to make your character a little more personal. One thing I noticed more than once during gameplay is that the larger characters (El Dragon, Montana) tend to stick to walls if you get close. Overall, I like the game but it is far from perfect and definitely not Borderlands style fun. Maybe try the demo before purchasing. Expand

Battleborn is a borderlands meets moba styled first person shooter with none of the charm
Battleborn features 2 modes, a story mode and a competitive mode…
Both modes can be played with any of the 25 available characters or 26 on PlayStation after you’ve successfully completed the requirements to unlock them…
And every single one of these characters are fleshed out, feeling completely unique…
guaranteeing a playstyle match for anyone…
it’s just a shame that the rest of the game isn’t as well thought out as these characters are…
Battleborn is unique from most first person shooters in that, every story mission or competitive multiplayer match your character starts at level 1... And as you level up to a maximum of 10 you are given a choice in a perk to enhance your shield, cool down rates, health, damage, or to enhance one of your 3 special moves... the third being unlocked once you reach level 5…
The story mode consists of 9 episodes and depending on whether you go in alone or play with 4 other people for a total 5, these 9 episodes will take you anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, making this story mode a hefty 6-9 hours long…
I definitely recommend you play with friends though, as I found these missions to be insanely challenging playing on your own..
And while there are checkpoints, there is no saving so you must play through these 1 hour missions in 1 go…
You also have limited lives... so if you lose all of your lives you fail the mission and have to start all the way from the beginning…
These lives are frustratingly shared when you play co-op,
so it’s very possible for 1 bad player to cost you a final boss fight win... but thankfully you can revive fallen players…
This story mode is the best part of battleborn, aside from the characters..
and that’s not saying much as it all feels so uninspired…
Every mission has a self-contained story that leads to a final conclusion but all 9 feel exactly the same…
Kill these bad guys, get to the next checkpoint, kill a mini boss, do this 2 more times, get to the main boss.. Get close to defeating him but oh no he has an annoying shield... disable it…defeat him for real, oh wait a surprise 2nd shield that you totally didn’t expect because every boss before this one totaly didn’t also have a surprise shield…
    just kidding, they did.
needless to say, this story mode quickly becomes a grind…
There are a few good jokes from the characters... but after a few hours, it’s just not cute anymore…
    They’re background noise in a grind fest…
And there really is no payoff for grinding rather than ranking your character up for a new skin, or to unlock another character...
There’s no real loot here, so there’s no incentive to explore these levels or grind these levels…
you’re literally just playing until you unlock a different character to do it all over again…
or of course to play in competitive multiplayer…
And remember how I said story mode was the best part?
    I meant it.
Competitive multiplayer consists of 3 modes…
A capture, incursion, and meltdown mode...
These are capture and hold 3 different points on the map, get to the enemies sentries and destroy them, or an escort battle, where you try to stop the other team from getting their robots from one spot to another…
Each mode has only 2 maps, and these modes are even more lifeless and filler feeling than the campaign..
    Your standard boring stuff...
id say its fun for a little bit, but id be lying to you.
No team death match, which I think would’ve been insanely fun with the leveling up systems, and the different character feels…
but it’s not here... the mode that would be the most fun and makes the most sense is not here…
While the story mode does have its moments of fun, and the characters are a blast to play around with and figure out..
There’s ultimately not much here to keep you entertained for more than a few days.
A deep system of characters, with a shallow arena to play in.
    I give battleborn a

It has more depth than most games these days. The characters and gear in particular. Each of the 26 characters are different and enjoyable. The balance is surprisingly good coming form GBX who has never made a PVP game before. I have never played anything even close to a MOBA before, yet I found it quite easy to grasp the multiplayer concepts in the 3 game modes. PVE is a break from the norm when you want to farm gear, etc. but IMO shouldn't be a main selling point. If you buy this game you are mostly buying it for the PVP. There are def some minor problems with the game, but GBX is issuing weekly hotfixes and monthly patches. Along with loads of free maps, modes, characters, and other content down the road. This game is a steal at $60 and I have already put 100+ hours into it.

That said, many of the news outlets, etc. don't seem to understand what it is. I read their reviews and have to wonder if they put more than a few hours into the game. I see much misinformation from these "trusted" review sites and a lot of it should just be ignored; the good and the bad. I have not spoken to a single person that I have met in game or on my friends list that doesn't like this game.

GBX shouldn't have released it on the eve of Overwatch's release, as many people have come to worship Blizzard as their god and BB is getting overshadowed; even though they are NOTHING alike and BB has way more content and depth with the $60 Overwatch price tag on consoles. The misinformation by reviewers, Blizzards great marketing, and GBX lack thereof may be enough to stop this game in its tracks which is a crying shame.

My advice would be to buy it regardless. You'll get your moneys worth.

From the common soldier to a 4 armed witch and a penguin in a mech suite, Battleborn has a focus on crazy crazy characters, all voiced very well and have their own background. What Battleborn also has is a campaign that showed promise but sadly it fell flat in the end. Not all the characters played a part and there is repetitive gameplay but the characters do mix it up since they all play differently.

    Pros"
    -Fantastic cast of characters
    -Cartoony graphics and attitude
-The skill trees for each character adds variation
    -The loot system

    Cons:
    -2 maps at launch
    -Wasted campaign
-Only 1 fun multiplayer mode (Incursion)

If Battleborn does look fun to you then you most likely will have a good time with it. More modes and maps, as well as characters are coming later. And the campaign could of been better since the creators of Borderlands are behind this game.

Its too bad this game didnt get the traction it deserved right out the get go. I bought it when it went on sale and have been playing it ever since. Fun action, good graphics and sound, cool characters, and lengthy missions have all kept my attention.

The characters in Battleborn are very very bland and boring. The story is fun but also very repetitive, to the point where 1 level a day is enough and 2 feels like a chore. Finally, the online community feels empty, and it is.

at the time of this review the game has been entirely shutdown for a few years, and it was a wonderful and amazing game, but i want it back, and there is almost no chance of that happening

It feels as though Battleborn wanted to be so much of everything including an RPG, a MOBA, an FPS, and the list goes on, but instead of trying to be good at everything, I would suggest that it should have been great at a few things.

A varied but over-engineered shooter that's a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothin'. [July 2016, p.84]

Battleborn is an incredibly ambitious title, and beneath the issues, there beats the heart of a robust and strategic MOBA shooter – and it occasionally reveals itself in exciting moments throughout both PvP and PvE. Methodical, strategic players will potentially get a lot out of the game – particularly if you're playing with co-ordinated friends – but the clunky engine could dissuade traditional first-person shooter fans. It'll be interesting to see how Battleborn develops further over the coming months.
