  • Summary: Sci-fi roguelike twin-stick shooter. The nuclear core you have to steal is leaking radiation. Fight your way out of the space station in your combat ship and pull off the Atomic Heist!

A good game should give you a reason to return to it frequently, and Atomic Heist has that quality without question. Yes, it’s challenging and occasionally frustrating, but it’s so enjoyable you just have to try it again and see if you can get farther. Fun games get my vote, and fun, cheap games are even better. With an exceptionally low price, Atomic Heist makes an occasional bout of radiation sickness far more palatable, so get back in there and retrieve that core!

Atomic Heist is a good game, but it would have benefited from some extra care and attention to its design. The lack of interesting and detailed environments pulls this game shy of greatness, especially considering the implementation of random generation. Still, the game manages to hold its own ground through its tense gameplay, heavy replay value and diverse pool of pick-ups and power-ups.

Atomic Heist is good for a short session, and does offer some shooty thrills and spills. The repetitive nature of the game won’t be to everyone’s taste, and although the developers have tried to help with this by changing the layout of the station every day (the so called “Daily Mission”), they can’t disguise the sense of deja vu when you are flying and shooting.

Atomic Heist is a side-scrolling action shooter in the same line as the NES game Gradius, but with a harsh difficulty level and a beta-looking design. I've never played a game this unforgiving and could not find anything - music, story, sounds, features, or graphics - to bring me to play any longer.

As far as twin-stick shooters go Atomic Heist can be pretty enjoyable at times but it’s certainly not the best game I’ve ever played in this specific genre. The first thing I always check in a game like this is how the controls hold up, and thankfully I suffered with no problems here. Everything remained tight and responsive throughout and this without a doubt made the gameplay a lot more fun. The gameplay on the whole has been done really well and the best thing is that it has an addictive side to it, which in turn means there’s quite a lot of replayability present. You will however die a lot in the game and if you easily get frustrated then this game will frustrate you quite a bit at times because it can get a little too difficult and feel a bit unfair at times. The game does however offer you an abundance of upgrades for you to tackle this high difficulty curve, and I must admit that each upgrade impressed me. Every upgrade feels like it matters and the most important thing is that they actually help you so this makes you want to carry on to get them all. Using these upgrades on the enemies never gets boring and the best thing is that there’s plenty of enemies to use them on. Each enemy has a decent amount of variety going for them and they each attack differently which keeps things fresh and interesting for longer. Unfortunately the level design doesn’t have the same amount of variety as the enemies and I must admit that I was a little disappointed with this aspect of the game. Another thing that disappointed me was the presentation side of the game. Visually the game just looks bland and there isn’t really anything that catches your eye here. Unfortunately the sound design doesn’t do much better and in my opinion they’ve missed a trick here because they could have created a lot more immersion when in combat. At the end of the day there’s a huge amount of twin-stick shooters for you to try and I’m afraid that Atomic Heist is going to get lost in the pile. Don’t get me wrong Atomic Heist is not a bad game it’s just that it has a few too many shortcomings and this in the end holds it back. If you’re a fan of twin-stick shooters though then there is content here that will tickle your fancy somewhat and in the end it just does enough to get a small recommendation from me. Expand
