The program basically allows you to purchase games at a lower cost and play as they continue to develop the finished product as part of this program showing early support allows you full access to all patches and the final release as well. Atlas currently has many convoluted systems layered on top of each other, which can make it difficult to determine your priorities. That does seem to take away from the overall enjoyment of the game in my opinion in i's current state. Hours may pass without you feeling as though you’re getting any meaningful progress. No matter what I set out to do within the world, there is no real reward other than the accomplishments we decide are rewarding experiences. Atlas uses multiplayer experiences with friends as a but of a crutch to drive the gameplay. Atlas neither feels like a high-seas pirate game nor a base-building survival game. It’s a blending of the two that really doesn't excel in either at its current state. What it gets right in capturing the sense of adventure a new voyage might bring quickly becomes sour the minute your massive Brigantine is brought to heel by a broken Ship of the Damned. The sensation of finding a new source of salt for cannon-making is brought screeching to a halt the moment you realize you have to travel five massive regions just to get back to your base safely because there are no safe ports along the way to dock for the night. In its early access state, Atlas has only a few successes to boast about. It nails the experience of gearing up for a long voyage, as well as the feeling of discovery when you stumble upon ruins or crumbling statue on a far-flung island with a group of friends. But those feelings are few and far between in the overall experience of the current game, and while the last two weeks of patches have been significantly better than the first few, more often than not my experience was filled with frustration and grief. Ground based combat is poor, and whether you’re on foot or at sea it’s far too easy to lose everything you’ve spent hours grinding materials to build to overpowered Ships of the Damned, an enemy company while you’re away sleeping. Each unfair loss leads frustration, and hopefully by the time the game releases from early access these niggling issues are resolved as Atlas has a lot of potential and we are currently playing a game still under development for the Xbox One that also supports PC cross play.
