This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is so strange in that it is possibly the most average game I've ever played.

    Pros:

    - The graphics are good

    - The combat, skill tree and abilities give you plenty of choice in playstyle

    Cons:

    - The game definitively outstays it's welcome by a great deal.

    - Some of the side quests are fairly terrible. Stacking rocks or fishing x10 of an item in a single player RPG is not my idea of fun.

    - Some of the narrative in the game is questionable. After spending less than a day with Basim your brother suddenly loses all sense and refuses to listen to you, Dag wants to fight you because you're doing what your brother asked and he doesn't like you for some reason that's not explained.

    - The biggest relief in getting 100% in the game is that I don't have to play the game anymore.

Ubisoft open-world games are awful. Formulaic. Woke. Redundant. Repetitive. Dull. Worst of all it butchers Viking and Anglo-Saxon English history. I was hoping for a beautiful Viking mythological tale and adventure, instead, I got whatever this abomination is. Still, the game is graphically nice and plays well enough, with only the occasional bug.

I was skeptical about this and waited two years to get the game, but finally played it and can say that this is at least as good as Odyssey, possibly even better. I don’t get the bad reviews really.

Yes, it’s another AC game that feels similar to the previous titles, but it’s still fun to play. I think they improved the combat, the stealth elements, and the game is a bit more realistic I feel. For example you can only chain two assassinations in a row, unlike in odyssey where you could basically kill 4 in a row with the broken spear by teleporting to each of them, here Eivor kills one target and then throws an axe to another one, it looks cool and feels believable. Just a minor thing but I like it. The fighting system is a bit more varied compared to Odyssey, you can use shields and block, dual weapons, or go two handed. it’s not for Honor but I think the fighting is definitely better than in the previous installments.

I did not encounter any bugs so far, about 20 hours into the game. The story so far is decent, nothing extraordinary but if you like Vikings you will like this too. There is a lot to do, and while of course after some time the things you do can become boring, the looting and fighting is satisfying. Also the gear system is much better now that you don’t have a million items in the inventory and can simply keep upgrading your favorite set of gear. The skill tree is new and interesting as well, though it takes some time getting used to, but the fact that you unlock abilities by discovering books in the world gives an even more incentive to explore the world. Some side activities like drinking, dice, and especially bard duels are fun too.

Overall, one of the best AC games ever created. If you watched Vikings and/or Last Kingdom, and like this type of game, you won’t be disappointed. The only criticism is a certain lack of creativity, so if you played some previous AC games, this won’t be anything dramatically different or original for you.

If you like any of the previous titles, you'll like Valhalla too. The game looks very nice, and the music is very good too.
But, they really should have edited themselves with this game: they really threw anything but the kitchen sink in this game. That diluted the experience for me. I also wasn't totally sold on the ending.

It's a decent-ish game; but unfortunately it is really getting to the point where if you've played one Assassin's Creed game, you've played them all. Ubisoft really needs to come up with some new, innovative, fresh ideas to spice up the franchise. I love the IP, but it's starting to feel like the games are nothing more than reskins of the previous title.

La pena es que pasadas esas primeras 20h el juego se vuelve aburrido y repetitivo. Todos los campamentos son similares. Todas las misiones para aliarse con territorios son similares. Son fallos que han hecho que deje de jugarlo por repetitivo. Llega un momento en que es tan repetitivo que te llegas a "olvidar" de la historia, ya que se resume en campamentos y conquistar nuevos territorios que tendrán unas 3 grandes conquistas, siempre la última es para el jefe final de la zona. while the main story line can get quite boring and especially long, you still want to hang out to the very end to see what's going to happen. asgard and jotunheim chapters were a really good mash up to the main story, and they tell you the tale of scandinavian mythology pretty well. i also liked how quests takes you to a lot of places into the map, and you can basically explore everything the world has to offer same time as you advance in the story.

the gorgeous open world itself is massive and filled with mysteries and loot. now, after app. 200 hours spend in the game (including season pass material), it's starting to finally feel empty. mysteries and sidequests often are filler/copypaste/typical_ubisoft_nonsense material anyways so if you dont want spend so much time on this game you can skip the most part of them.

if you like open world exploring with a decent combat system, with lots of different variations of weapons and skill moves, definitely spend some time with this game. and i urge you to try it if you, like me, lost interest to the series or the lore at some point. two points off the score comes from the copypaste-sidecontent, which ubisoft seems to insist to have on their games.

There are a lot of twists so you better complete the game and like me, you’ll be way excited about what’s to come. Even with some flaws, this game kept me interested all along. Valhalla’s storyline was a bit stretched out but once you get a hang of visiting all the areas in England, you’ll finish it soon enough. It also tries to connect and answer the questions since AC 3. Please note that a new present-day protagonist gets introduced in the game as well.

**BEWARE THE FAKE GOOD REVIEWS AND "HELPFUL REVIEWS"**

Out of the RPG style trilogy (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla), this one is far and away the worst, in fact this might be the worst AC game ever. I doubt this will change.

    Cons:
    - Feels more dead than any other AC game. The few NPCs that are there are even less lively than Skyrim NPCs, and this game is a decade newer.
    - The acting so far is worse than any AC game in recent memory. Eivor's actress is not good, none of the side characters are good (at least not yet).
    - The open world so far feels extremely hollow, boring, and repetitive. The side quests are so out of the way and are all over the place on difficulty. Despite being the newest game, this has visuals that are worse than Origins, Odyssey, and Unity.
    - The entire health system. First of all, the fact your health doesn't regenerate when out of combat AT ALL is the most stupid design decision I've ever seen in a video game. You need to constantly be looking for food, looting bushes for berries (good luck figuring out which ones have them). You can also only hold a few rations at a time, which are effectively your health packs.
    - The game is extremely buggy.
    - The control layout. If you played AC Origins and Odyssey and used the alternate controls, well I hate to inform you that they are not in Valhalla. They have a feature called "customize controls" but the problem is you can't customize anything without breaking the controls. I tried every variation I could to get a Unity/Syndicate/Origins/Odyssey layout, but each one resulted in other functions becoming unusable (assassinations, interacting, crouching). It's just awful and these controls are completely foreign to any RPG I've ever played. RB/RT to attack? RB being the light attack? X to roll? Whose idea was this???
    - The bird is completely useless. It can't spot anything at all.
    - It's often too dark in caves and it's a huge pain to equip torches in this game. What was wrong with Origins and Odyssey torches Ubisoft??? This is awful.
    - The skill tree is ridiculous to navigate through. It takes up far too room, is not clear enough, the icons are too small without zooming in, and everything is too far apart and spread out for no reason. It's also impossible to tell why they are divided this way.
    - The combat is just ridiculous. It's too choppy to rely on parrying and dodging doesn't always work, sometimes it'll dodge twice right away. Worst part is dodging consumes stamina.
    - Extremely repetitive combat. The archery combat combines the worst of Odyssey and worst of Origins to make what is the most annoying ranged combat in a game. Like Origins it has the different arrow types (a good thing), but unlike Origins you can only have one bow on you at a time.
    - The game has been out several months and there are still constant Reddit threads of bugs. Ubisoft will not address the button mapping issues.
    - The parkour is the worst parkour I've seen yet. It's way worse than Unity which had issues. The character is so clunky to use and constantly changes directions too easily. Want to climb up? Too bad you're going sideways! But just like the previous two AC games, the old frustrations of climbing are also still there.

If you care about this series, just watch a Let's Play on YouTube. This is not worth your money OR your time. I can't think of any good to put into this. It's historically inaccurate. This is all coming from someone who hated Origins and Odyssey at first and then gave them a chance and wound up liking them a fair bit (despite their flaws). I hope this story gets better because right now I'm not sold on anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute worst AC game I’ve ever played. The main story is confusing and boring, the once prime objective of AC games, defeating the Templars, is now a pointless time-consuming side quest which leads to an unsatisfying conclusion. The side quests, now called mysteries, are boring and unrewarding except for a certain amount of XP which leads to useless skills. The abilities are just a rehash of Odysseys’ but have Montreal have somehow made it worse. The other collectibles such as treasures, Roman masks and such are time-wasting and also pointless as weapon perks and stats are essentially useless. The druids DLC however is a breath of fresh air, even though it’s more of the same, the map size and amount of collectibles are satisfying and actually rewarding. The mastery challenges however have destroyed my opinion of AC games, the frustrating objectives such as “headshot kill every enemy” and “weak point shots” mixed with terrible enemy AI have made the game near impossible to complete which lead to a teaser about their upcoming unannounced DLC. The only thing the mastery challenges actually challenge, is Ubisoft’s ability to make a good Assassins Creed game. Hopefully Ubisoft Montreal does not make another AC game in the future. Expand

I recommend this game especially for those who want to experience a fantastic role-playing game, with many elements of the early assassin's creed. I really liked the fact that the too repetitive stories of the first chapters of the Assassin's Creed saga have been abandoned. Valhalla is a well structured game, the map is large, but given its incredible variety I call it one of the best open world ever. The best thing about this game is that it is not only an assassin's creed, but it is a story of a Viking and his entire universe and this is what makes it a unique and wonderful game of its kind. Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the biggest fails of all time. Resident Evil 3 Remake was too short and boring. Last of Us 2 is one of the worst games ever made. Watch Dogs Legion is pathetic. Final Fantasy VII Remake has no reason to play again, even tho good game. Ghost of Tsushima has one of the worst camera angles in any video game ever, so i just can't play it, but it doesn't seem very interesting anyway. Marvel's Avengers is a joke. So what's left? Literally only one game - Assassin's Creed Valhalla! It's not best game ever / not best AC game, but at least it's fun enough and DLC's almost look more interesting than main game, so i'm hyped. Dull and boiler plate game. This series has slipped so far it is ridiculous. Pick another Ubi franchise, replace the names in the story, retexture the activities and you have the same gam over and over again.

    Bad:

Things that were supposed to be different in this version: less open world activities to do (wrong, there are just as many boring icons to look at as before), no side quests (they just renamed them to something else), more "assassin-y" (not really).

Valhalla is even more boring than the last game. It reminds me of AC3, a place I had no interest in visiting that is just a bunch of woods with towns laying around. Nothing in the world made me want to explore. The voice acting is pretty bad, especially the female Eivor. It is like they told the actress to make herself sound like Odin or Zeus. It just sounds dumb. The story it the same typical story in every game.

The bugs, even after all the patches, are bad. After installing the latest patch and playing for 5 minutes I saw vikings pop in and out as they ran, some vikings were running on air and clipping was common. Reminds me of Unity actually.

The combat is even worse than the previous 2 ACs. It's like I'm playing a strategy game now. You are so far zoomed out that it is a couple of puppets hitting each other. The combat speed also seems very wrong. I can dodge backwards but in combat it is a leisurely stroll as whatever enemy is hitting always seems to hit you anyway. Whatever combat tweaks were made to the game need to be reverted.

The skill system, which AC never needed, has gone off the deep end. Taking a page from MMOs or PoE there are now lots of little dots that you can select to get minimal benefits. It takes a lot of dots to truly have any meaning and among the list of "what were they thinking" you cannot see some dots until you can unlock them which makes planning impossible. At least if you couldn't already just go online and look up the full tree. This is a stupid mechanic probably introduced so people wouldn't realize how dumb the whole skill tree system is. This isn't an MMO...

The power level makes no sense whatsoever. I was power level 15 before leaving Norway even though I have no idea how that relates to anything because I didn't get skill points or whatever they are called. At the same time areas I look at in the map say they are power level 1 but the enemies can stomp me in seconds. In an attempt to hide "levels" I guess, Ubi has managed to create a system that is useless. What exactly is wrong with levels?

Side activities are just as dull. Again, think AC3. Flyting makes no sense and is one of the stupidest mini-games I've ever seen in a game. The other activities, like raids, fit in better but are just as dull. You raid a settlement, kill everyone there and then...nothing. Why?

    The Good:

Assassin abilities come back into play a little more than recent entries in the series. I felt I could pull it off more often in this game.

    Summary:

    Dull environment - AC 3
    Bugs - AC Unity
Revamped skills, "side quests", leveling - meaningless

This is overall a boring, generic viking adventure game filled with a map of icons that lead you to things that are just as boring for the most part. There is nothing that really lifted the gameplay up.

Complete disappointment compared to the generally excellent Immortals Fenyx Rising.

I consider myself pretty big Assassin's Creed fan, but i actually don't like early games much. They feel outdated and i'm just not enjoying them. My top 3 favorite ac games are 4, Unity and Origins (in that order). I also like Syndicate, but not as much as these three. For past 6 years i have been playing 4, Unity and Origins constantly. I have finished Unity almost each year since 2015. I'm also playing 4 constantly, but i haven't finished it as much, because it's way longer game and i love to just free roam there. Now i would say that despite not liking 1,3, Revalations or Rogue (i hate to play as Templar), i would say that absolutely loving later games like 4, Unity, Syndicate and Origins makes me as much Assassin's Creed fan, as someone who only likes first 3.

In fact, i would say i'm bigger fan than these people, because if someone gave up on this series in 2012, then how can you consider yourself a fan? Maybe early fan, but overall if you hate majority of these games, then you are not fan of this series. It's that simple. Why i'm even talking about it is because watching some youtubers making videos "Valhalla disappointed me", "Valhalla is boring" etc, made it very clear that these people were never gonna like Valhalla anyway. No matter what Ubisoft did, these people wouldn't be happy right now and they would still make their videos whining about smallest details that they didn't like.

Instead of enjoying new games for that they are, instead these people want games to be what they want. That's obviously fair, but again, seems like they have ignored this series since 2012. It was so obvious what Valhalla was going to be. How can you be disappointed, when trailers and Ubisoft people on twitter made it very obvious what this game is going to be. Basically no matter what, these people just wanted Valhalla to be this most basic and boring AC Revalations or AC 3 clone and that's all these people want. That's the only AC game they want and if it's not that, then they are going to hate it. That's the sad reality actual AC fans need to live in, where Ubisoft makes great games, but nostalgic people who can't move on are going to hate these games and make their videos. Main problem with these videos is that these people are very clearly trying to manipulate and make other people believe that this game (and other games) suck. While actually problem is not the game, problem is that they just don't like it. Just cause you don't like something, doesn't mean that it's actually bad ya know?

Conclusion : I very much enjoyed Valhalla, it's not perfect, but it's way better than Odyssey was. Story is more interesting than Odyssey's story. It has beautiful graphics, not as good as RDR 2, but still good enough and very modern looking. Combat is fun, main character (male Eivor) is very likable and better than main characters in Origins and Odyssey.

Only reason i even started caring about AC series was AC 4. Making AC 4 is literally best decision Ubisoft has ever done. I'm so, so, so glad that this Desmond **** went finally away. Reason most people play these games i going back in time, not some modern day nonsense. I wish these games never had modern day, but it is what it is, thankfully AC games got so much better starting with AC 4. AC 3 was just horrible. Ubisoft, you should only listen to your real fans, not this minority who doesn't even care about anything you have done since 2013. They are almost as annoying as people who whine under every resident evil 4 remake video, that they want code veronica remake more. Resident evil 4 is million times better game, more important game and more popular game. These who whine about code veronica are also just small group of people who don't even care about resident evil 4 at all. It's literally same with thing with AC games. I swear Ubisoft, if you go back to this AC1-AC3 nonsense, i will stop buying your games, i will stop promoting your games to my friends and i will never play any of your games ever again. There's absolutely no question that i'm bigger AC fan that he could ever dream to be. Calling Valhalla garbage is biggest joke in years. Valhalla is easily better than both Origins and specially Odyssey. Valhalla is first AC game in long time where it has been really interesting to finally explore the open world. You mentioned how interesting pyramids were in Origins, well of course. But here the thing, they were one of the few interesting things about Origins. Most of it was boring empty desert. I don't hate Origins, but it wasn't as interesting as Valhalla. Valhalla has way better story, better character and better open world. You said that England doesn't have landmarks or places to explore. Kidding me? London? Stonehenge? Huge castles? Mountains in Norway? There's so much to explore. Valhalla is easily one of the better designed maps Ubisoft has ever done, just behind Black Flag. There you go. You said that you laugh at people who think Origins is meh, well i laugh at you saying that Valhalla is garbage. There's clearly, very clearly more people who like Valhalla than Origins. Valhalla was biggest PC launch for Ubisoft EVER. It had over 2 million players in launch month alone. Jor Raptor gets 100 000s views on almost every Valhalla video he makes. People very clearly like this game and many have said that they absolutely love Valhalla map designs. Showing your "poll" as some evidence is BS, because most people answered that they haven't even played this game, but you said that people agree with you. Hell no. Thankfully you don't get that many views, so i don't really care that much, but this one video made me write this, because it was just too much nonsense. If you can have your BS opinion, then i have every right to have my opinion about your video and point out false things. I have been Assassin's Creed supporter and fan over 10 years and i very likely like games that you don't even like, because you seem like somebody who hops on hype trains. You know very well that people who whine about new games are just nostalgia nerds who hate every game after AC 3. I have always liked Unity and even Syndicate and i strongly doubt you like them. The cultist characters and 'special monsters' however remain impossible to get past. I built myself up to 222 power level to take on a 90 power level cultist. No go. They defeated me easily. The ability to easily loot around you by pressing Y wheter you face the object or not. Odyssey pushed things further by allowing you to loot everything around you by pressing Y only once. Now you have to face each object precisely and laboriously, making any loot a long and boring ajustment of camera.

The ability tree is simply impossible to read so I felt I had no choice but to let fate decide each upgrade.

You can define point of interest on the map but you can never see them on foot and you have to call your 'eagle' to maybe see them, that is if you are looking in the direction. It's basically impossible to clearly see where you need to go when on foot.
The 'eagle' has completely changed regarding survey: it's now useless when infiltrating a camp since it marks no enemies.

Origins and Odyssey were also about history. It was really interesting to discover Egypt and Greece. Here, you are no longer encourage to explore to discover history: at most, you'll find a roman mask with no more explanation, just a stuff to collect, like in FarCry3, 10 years ago.

Last but not least: remember those towers to discover new activities? Yes, well they're back. So, get ready to climb tons of towers and mountains to reveal 'activities' and 'treasures'.

It felt obvious that the team watched too much Vikings TV Series and just wanted to play Ragnar Lothbrok.

Everything feels heavy, laborious and clunky.

It saddens me to know that Valhalla was a commercial success because I fear that we'll get more of Valhalla's dated gameplay and much less of Origins' fresh restart...

Too many glitches, bugs and general inability to complete missions/world events to give this more than a 2 out of 10. This is like a beta version for testing purposes. Assassins Creed is my favrotie series of all time, so im harder on this series than I am with any other game.. and while Valhalla is a great game and my score will reflect that, as an assassins creed game, assassins creed Valhalla isa complete disappointment.
Here you play as avore, becauseubisoft cares more about its precious sales you chose either man version or female version because ubisoft is afraid to commit and want to make everyone happy.. you set off on a Viking adventure to basically take over England during the dark ages.. and sadly this is more of a Viking game with assassins creed mechanics rather than an assassins creed game where you play as a Viking, the lore of the Templars and the assassins is there.. infct the whole uncovering the order side thing odyssey had going on is valhallas main focus, and I love that… however the game built around it is the most hallow money grab of a game in probably the entire assassins creed series… they sold you on Vikings, rob and pillage, this is fun about 0 times, its never fun going into an area for a raid, opening chests and collecting all of the loot, its repetive and bland, and that can be said for the entire game… im one to uncover every inch of an assassins creed game, read very document, platinum it.. but assassins creed Valhalla is so hollow that I found myself skipping through a lot of its dialog as the story is broken up into individual kingdoms you go out and help… this is less of an assassins creed game, you know.. a game where you relive memories of someone that was supposed to have actually existed to learn more about the orer and the places of the pieces of edden, and just a boring Viking game where you go from kingdom to kingdom taking care of that kingdoms individual problems, it’s a 70 hour long game of individual mini stories that by themselves could be okay experiences, but in an assassins creed game they feel like a waste of time not adding anything to the overall world of assassins creed, no one will remember Valhalla as a step forward for the series, infact in a lot fof places Valhalla steps back, for example its loot, there is next to none, yet you still collect it from time to time, its such an awkward system that you forget there are other weapons and armorus you can pick up.. youll mpost likely stick to the first or second piece of gear you find in the game and stick to that all the way through, especially thanks to the grind heavy upgrading system here that require a ridiculous amount of recourses to upgrade weapons… where Valhalla steps forward though is you making choices that actually matter, your choices have consequences, you have different paths with different characters you can go down that don’t feel empty like odyssey did.. but back to the intial point, this is great if assassins creed were an rpg seres set in different time periods… but its not, its meant to be an experience of a story already told, not an unwritten story of your grandpa and you get to chose if he banged other Vikings or not… tell me if avor was gay or not, don’t let me chose, again.. commit to a character, tell me their story… this is not a solution to the story telling critques players have.. this is assassins creed, not dragon age.. tell me the story as it happened… but this is thebiggest assins creed game to date, though bigger isn’t always better, another first, this s the first time I gave up on collecting all the things in an assassins creed game, for one,, again the world felt boring pointless and hallow, even the side quests that were supposed to be the talk of the town, except for the mini game orlog, it had its hooks in me like gwent, and I love hunting down the zealots of the land, bringing my back to the original assassins creed.. but the colelctables here, the game just makes you work too hard to get, one too many are locked behind story progress – why even put it on the map then… and evry other one ios locked behing an environment puzzle.. I don’t mind this eveyr once in a while , but map cleaning in assassins creed is a form of meditation, if I have to figure out how to get to literally every chest in the world, it isn’t meditation anymore, it’s a puzzle game outside of the story, no thanks. Also traversal here is probably the worst in the series too, its wakward, plenty pof annoying deaths at the hands of climbing, The biggest disappointment overall is this games story, the worst ending in history if you can even call it an ending and the outside of the animus world features the least likably protagonist of all time, smoking doesn’t make you look like a badass, it makes you look inconsiderate of the people around you, but again, assassins creed Valhalla is a great game, the combat is fun, you can go down different paths to play the way you prefer, brute, ranged, stealth, or a mix of all 3…

Torn between giving this game a 6 or a 7. It's a bang average game at worst, a solid game at best. It's kind of a let down in a lot of areas that Ubisoft has nailed withe the previous 2 games. A lot of it starts with Eivor, whom sucks as a main character to put it bluntly. Eivor isn't as well written or well voice acted or well anything in comparison to Bayek or Kassandra.(I say KassandraTorn between giving this game a 6 or a 7. Eivor isn't as well written or well voice acted or well anything in comparison to Bayek or Kassandra.(I say Kassandra because I felt Odyssey story was meant to be told from her perspective). I've played every console released Assassin's Creed and none of them had a character as meh as Eivor. What sucks is there is a lot about this game that is good, it's combat isn't as good as the 2 previous titles, but it's still good. The skill tree is great and open. But the world is meh, the loot you find around the world is disappointing.

I've been streaming this game and I feel like my streams are telling on the game. One moment i'm having a ball, next moment i'm bored out of my mind or not interested in whats going on. When I bored I don't mean the slow paced storytelling or exploring and open world. I feel like when you call this game boring people assume you mean it lacks action.

It could've been better, and comparison to Origins and Odyssey it does nothing better.

Made by Ubisoft's best AC studio, this game definitely doesn't disappoint. While it plays similarly to Origins and Odyssey, I think people who may have been turned off AC for a while will have something to love with this game, as it is different enough from the previous two to really stand out and shine. I can confidently say that Valhalla is Ubisoft's best Assassin's Creed game in a long time, perhaps since Black Flag. I played a lot of Odyssey and loved it as well, but it never quite felt like an Assassin's Creed game. Valhalla is the end result of Ubisoft almost perfecting the open world RPG formula they began with Origins, as well as a properly balancing the assassin aspect so the series does not lose its identity.

I've put over 60 hours into this game so far and I feel like I've only made it halfway through. Valhalla is huge, but it doesn't feel like its blatantly huge for the sake of being so, similar to how Odyssey was. Instead, Valhalla trims the fat that often made Odyssey feel like a slog to play through. Don't get me wrong, the game is still huge and some people may still find it tough to finish, but side-quests have been replaced with quick and easy world events, icons aren't littered all over the map this time and instead you are forced to really explore to find out what certain areas hold - the game is similarly designed to Far Cry 5 in that sense, where they incentivize players to really explore the worlds they're in rather than making it feel like a checklist of things to do.

The gear system seems to be controversial in this game - the game approaches loot entirely differently to how both Origins and Odyssey did it. A lot of people complained that Odyssey especially felt grindy, so I think that Valhalla's loot system was Ubisoft's response to that. The game has minimal gear, nothing is random and everything is hand-made and put in pre-selected locations to find. Every time you come across an area that has loot (either gear for your character or loot to build your settlement) there is often a puzzle associated with it, further adding more depth to Ubisoft's world rather than just a checklist of things to do.

The game's world is comprised of 4 maps I believe: Norway, eastern England (largest map), Vinland, and Asgard. All of these locations are great and have their own atmosphere to them, they do not feel copy-and-paste, which is what some of the islands in Greece (Odyssey) felt to me. Valhalla's storytelling is centered around its world, which is where it also differs from previous AC games. While there is an overarching plot, each region in England has its own subplot that your character has to solve, and I love it. I had lower expectations for the writing, as Ubisoft's writing was never that great - especially compared to games like RDR2 or The Witcher 3, but Valhalla's story isn't bad - it's not amazing, but it's good; some subplots are great (East Anglia and Sciropescire in particular), and some are pretty uninteresting and bland (Essex comes to mind) but overall, the writing was better than expected.

In total, I think Valhalla is Ubisoft's best attempt at an open-world RPG yet, and they have really learned a lot from creating Origins and Odyssey, it gives me a lot of hope for their upcoming open-world games such as Far Cry 6. The AI is still unfortunately pretty bad - either enemies spot you instantly when they shouldn't be able to, or they are completely blind/deaf - for a 2020 game, I do not think Ubisoft's AI has progressed at all. The world still has certain immersion-breaking moments, I think the wildlife is kind of goofy, hunting missions with NPCs always feels really weird, etc.

Overall, I still think the game is great, and I'd give it an 8 as it has room to improve.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla isn't a light, fast and pragmatic Viking ship. It's a Titanic, magnificent, massive, and majestic, made to lead players through a 9th-century epic. With enough content to keep players busy for hours and hours, it's not threatened by any iceberg but rather by the weight of its own size. For the most dedicated, this can be a treat, but for many others, it could be a game they'll leave unfinished, living forever in the backlog.

Even with its technical shortcomings on last-generation hardware, it is hard to not call Assassin’s Creed Valhalla an amazing open-world RPG. It’s obvious that Ubisoft did its homework and learned from Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla’s story is one of the best not only in the franchise but in the open-world RPG genre. The world is vast but not laden with empty, pointless space. Combat is addicting, character customization is the best the franchise has ever seen, and the welcome return of composer Jesper Kyd makes for one of last year’s most immersive and satisfying experiences.
