  • Summary: Animal Super Squad is a physics-based adventure game that lets you play as your favorite animal. Speed through a world full of dangers and bananas. Create your own levels, share them with the community, or forget all that nonsense and just play other people’s stuff.

This isn’t a game that reinvents the wheel in any way, and many of you will have likely seen something like this before, most notably in the Trials series. But the undeniably unique brand of strangeness found in Animal Super Squad, and the inclusion of the online community options ultimately makes it a risk worth taking.

If Animal Super Squad's gameplay was tightened up and it offered more of a challenge then it would be as fun as it is funny.

Whilst the depth and diversity of its content will be bolstered through post-launch community contribution, Animal Super Squad, at its core, feels far too bare for its own good. There’s nothing particularly wrong with its physics-based gameplay, and there’s certainly some fun to be had throughout. However, the big drawback here is that it’s just not exciting enough nor interesting enough to maintain traction in the long run.

The presentation side of the game ticked a lot of boxes for me because not only are both the visuals and sound design unique but they also have charm as well.
Technically the game holds up really well throughout your time with the game and the physics have a good balance of being fun and challenging at the same time. There is a decent amount of replayability present in the game due to the online offerings the game delivers to you. If played for long periods the game does tend to get repetitive very quickly so I would recommend that you play the game in short sittings. I found the single player offerings to be a little on the basic side and if not played online it does end up becoming tedious. An inclusion of a story would’ve been nice because the gameplay feels a little cold without one. I know a few people who’ve played Animal Super Squad on other consoles and they all said similar things. That thing was that the game is fun but only in short bursts and after playing it for quite a while it became quite clear that their description was spot on. Don’t get me wrong though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing because I don’t think this game is meant to be played for long periods full stop and for me this makes returning back to the game that little bit more intriguing. It stays intriguing as well thanks to its level editor which might I add has a decent amount of depth within it. There is also a decent amount of depth in the online offerings the game has as well and for me this was the best way to play this game because the single player offerings are a little on the basic side and feature no story or campaign either. In terms of technical problems the game doesn’t have any and I must admit that I was impressed with how the physics held up throughout my time with the game. At the end of the day then even though Animal Super Squad has a few shortcomings for me the charm that’s present in the game kept things fun for the most part and it did make me forget about the shortcomings culminating in a decent recommendation from me.
