Ancestors: The Humankid Odyssey puts us in the shoes of the first primates who faced nature and were victorious. And, like them, the player will have to describe everything without any help in this original and different survival game.

Ancestors is one of the most exciting games of the decade. Despite some frustrating elements, Ancestors is an incredible experience and a tour de force of game design.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a great survival game with an extremely steep learning curve.

You start the game as a baby ape, scared and left alone from a predator's attack. You're in a dark jungle, in the rain, with hallucinatory faces of evil emerging from nowhere (which happens when your ape is terrified). Once you find a safe hiding spot, you're then moved to another ape, an adult, from your tribe and are tasked with the job of finding the lost baby. Once this excitement is over, you begin your journey through time. Your job in Ancestors is for your clan to survive 3 million years! You do this by evolution. You will figure out how to make sticks, bash open coconuts, and everything else that brought us forward towards the technology we have today. The world is massive and beautifully rendered. This is the one true joy I had during my evolutionary path, the exploration. The further you manage to travel from the first destination you unlock new starting areas. As your apes learn, they gain neural energy, used to build the neurons in the skill tree. Once you hit certain points on the tree, you progress time forward. Losing an entire clan is the toughest part of this game, as it causes you to have to start all the way over (from any starting area you've unlocked) Having to re-learn everything can get frustrating at times, as the game gives you no direction whatsoever. This is a deep and intense Survival Simulator, the apes didn't get tutorials how to smash the right two rocks together to make a sharper rock, to beat on a stick to make a spear, so neither do you. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an INCREDIBLE game, and the world is intricate and well planned. Survival buffs have their work cut out with this one! Full Review »

I hope the game's director likes seeing mediocre to low ratings on his game, since there seem to be plenty of them. If he had kept his mouthI hope the game's director likes seeing mediocre to low ratings on his game, since there seem to be plenty of them. If he had kept his mouth shut and understood what his game TRULY is, then I would've given it a 7 or perhaps even an 8 out of 10.

But his overinflated ego and disgusting sense of entitlement both kill my positive rating of the game, as well as my interest in continuing to play it.
