The parts of this game that really shine are the compelling narrative, fantastically voice acted characters, amazing atmosphere and world design. And it certainly helps that this is a very good looking game.

Gameplay takes a back seat in this game but that's fine because it isn't the main focus. However it can still be engaging and fun at times without providing too much of a challenge.

Truly one of the best experiences I've had in a game. Graphics, voice acting, story, message, gameplay , music - everything here screams top notch.

I truly didn't want it to end, brilliant game, a true masterpiece.

Didn't think it really is as good as its praised. But it really is. Amazing game, great story, cool graphics. Only downside is the last 3 chapteres felt a bit rushed in my opinion, the mystery behind plague and inquisition should be explained a little better. But maybe after awesome 3/4 of the game i had too big expectations. Anyway it really deserves highest score. One of the mostDidn't think it really is as good as its praised. But it really is. The writing, voice-acting, graphics and music are some of the best ever, period.
    The sound effects are amazing.
    The diverse environments are amazing.
    The character interactions are superb.

As well, for those like me, this game does NOT rely on an idiot hud and has customization.

No, the story does not get convoluted or weird or become a mess at the end. All one has to do is be able to grasp one simple concept: its a video GAME that we PLAY and it has...an ending.

However, the writers have told their original fantastical tale superbly, step by step in a truly meaningful and unique way and, yet, still provided great GAMEPLAY that combines perfectly with the story.

    No, this isnt dishonored, thankfully.
    No, this isnt open-world, thankfully.
    Yes, this is linear, thankfully.
No, it is NOT a 10-15 hour game: as usual, those numbers are for those who rush through games in their myriad of ways.

25-30 on your first playthrough easily if you are a thorough gamer, like myself and love to soak up the atmosphere and experience ALL the game has to offer. Obviously, searching the ENTIRE map is a given.

As usual, do yourself a favor and do not CHEAT or cheapen the experience by using outside sources for knowledge to make your way through the game. You only have one time to play it once.

For example, not referring to collectibles, there are story tidbits you will miss unless you find them.

A second playthrough and the achievements absolutely add replay value. (a third if you want to go all stealth or add restrictions)

The gameplay: a girl with a sling and alchemy who must sneak and fight her way throughout. Simple, yet, diverse enough to satisfy.

As well, this offers gameplay replayability for those so inclined, such as, myself through self-imposed restrictions. (other games receive this accolade but for dimwitted reasoning many do not give this game the same credit)

No, its not a walking simulator.
Yes, the puzzles arent the hardest and most complex in existence, but, not only do they not need to be, but, when compared to other games they stand up just fine.

No, this game is absolutely NOT a walking cut-scene. That is distortion and lies put forth by those who simply dont enjoy these types of games or foolishly compare this game to games of different genres.

Thus, proving they dont understand a thing about how to review a game.

Anybody who puts this below a 9/10 is not objectively reviewing the game and placing an undue burden on this game while accepting those same issues in other games.

For example, to say this game is “linear” and then downgrade it for that purposeful development choice is the epitome of foolish.

To complain that this game is “short” and has “no multi-player” is the epitome of foolish and blatant hypocrisy.

For me, some of my minor annoyances were: a few foolishly placed auto-saves and a controller scheme that takes a short period of time getting used to. (btw, they are NOT “clunky”)

As well, i was disappointed the in-game characters would yap and give spoiler information for situations and puzzles: an obviously poor decision by the devs.

The same goes for the amazingly annoying decision to block off backtracking through environment blocks and/or autosaves: in this age of technology and with many collectibles its unacceptable. I went into this game as a 4 decade gamer who likes single-player only games, rpgs and thought i was about to walk my way through a simulator. I went into it thinking of a sensua type experience. Thankfully, it was a whole lot more and i came out as a man who had an amazing gaming experience and quickly began another playthrough to again experience the story of Amicia and her amazing knights. Wow! What a masterpiece!

Estoy bastante metido en el mundo de los videojuegos y, de algún modo, este juego había pasado desapercibido para mi, y descubrí su existencia al ser lanzado. No pude evitarlo, y me he lanzado a por él.
Es increíble, a pesar de ser de bajo presupuesto tiene acabados buenos en todas sus facetas, y sin duda es una compra recomendada.

An absolutely beautiful masterpiece! An enthralling story, with some fun straightforward gameplay. Some light puzzle solving. Amazing graphics! Nothing really to complain about except I wish there was more! One thing I'll say is I enjoyed the more story oriented parts than when the game gets more challenging with it's gameplay mechanics.

The Inquisition is making in-roads into the country and a rat plague is killing people. You play as Amicia de Rune, daughter of Nobleman Robert de Rune, as the two are exploring the forest with their dog Lion. This serves as the tutorial where you learn how to use your sling and traverse the landscape stealthily. Not long after that however Lion chases a wild boar into a darker area of the forest and gets dragged to his death by some unknown force, causing Robert and Amicia to retreat back to the safety their home. Their respite is brief as the Inquisition invades their home, slaughtering everyone, including Robert. This forces Amicia’s mother to sacrifice herself to ensure that Amicia and her younger brother Hugo get as far away from their home as possible.

The game’s characterization of it’s two main protagonists are well done. Their relationship at the start is kind of awkward. It’s clear that Amicia has a stronger relationship with her Father than with her Mother and Hugo, the latter two spending most of their time together in Hugo’s room as Beatrice tends to some ailment in Hugo’s blood. Being forced into this dangerous new world alone certainly doesn’t help Amicia and Hugo get off on the right foot. Amicia serves as the voice of reason and responsibility while Hugo serves as the innocent, wide-eye kid that he is. Initially, Hugo’s naivety and childlike whimsy, such as being fascinated by frogs blowing bubbles while underwater, frustrates Amicia as the two of them are trying to avoid danger and survive being hunted by enemy soldiers. However, it’s that same childlike wonder that makes Hugo easier to like as it’s juxtaposed to this death and disease riddled world. Throughout the game, Hugo and Amicia can stumble across various types of flowers, which serve as one strand of the games collectibles. Once discovered, Hugo plucks one of the flowers and places it in Amicia’s hair, an act that does a phenomenal job of illustrating the development and warmth of their relationship. As the game progresses, the two grow more trusting of each other and their abilities, becoming more comfortable around each other often cracking jokes and sharing stories about their parents. By the end, you really do get a sense of how far Hugo and Amicia have come in terms of their familial bond.

At first, the core gameplay loop revolves around primarily stealthing around enemy soldiers. Although it’s not always a welcomed strategy, there are times where direct combat is involved using your sling to launch rocks to stun or kill enemies. Head shots are the name of the game here, but the game auto aims like a bastard, making head shots almost insulting easy. The AI can sometimes be as dumb as door nails, all too easily distracted by loud noises, then slowly trudge over to where they though they heard it, stand there befuddled for a minute and trudge back with the customary “Must’ve been my imagination”. I was also able to cheese an enemy by getting him stuck around a light trap and horde of rats, walk around him even though he could clearly see me and then take him out with some “Somnum”.

Then the game introduces the plague in the form of rats that behave like they’re demonically possessed. Their glowing red eyes and collective squealing as they nip at your feet, waiting for the moment to devour you and strip your body of all it’s flesh like a pack of piranhas. They erupt from the ground like a geyser and burst through the walls, flooding an area like water. The shear number of them on screen at any one time and how beautifully they’re animated is quite the spectacle. The gameplay loop then centres around using fire and light puzzles to move hordes of rats out of your path, trap them somewhere or cause them to kill enemies for you. Needless to say if you get caught amongst the rat horde, it’s has the potential to be an instant death.

The game also features a crafting system that allows you to upgrade your Sling, Equipment and Alchemy. You can craft projectiles such as “Ignifier” which allows you to light torches, braziers and flammable materials. “Devorantis” which, when aimed at an enemy’s helmet, will force them to throw it off priming them for a head shot from the sling.

Performance wise, this game is great. The graphics are absolutely stunning, it’s the type of world that I’d love to explore more in VR, minus the rat plague of course. Not once during my 13 hour play through did the game ever hitch, stutter, lag, crash or run sub-optimally in any way.

Overall, A Plague Tale tells a beautiful story of family relationship building and resilience in face of monumental danger. A loss of innocence but a gaining of maturity and self-sufficiency while dealing with the horrors of war and disease. This game really put Asobo Studio on the map for me and it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year.

It was the first game I made 100% (10/04/20 21:05). Good story, good soundtrack and very varied gameplay, when I saw the demonstration videos I thought it would just be stealth and run away from mice with torches and if the game was just that for me it would be interesting but it is much better than I imagined undoubtedly one of the best games of 2019.

Gameplay is also very satisfying, combat is engaging. Usually I do not stealth games, but this one is made the right way. I never felt like the game was funky and unfair. The opposite. If I screwed up, I died. But never due to a faulty enemy.

Kept me invested in the characters journey from beginning till the end.

The story isn’t terrible, to be fair, but as I said, it’s built around a girl escorting her mostly useless little brother through peril after peril. Even after he gains a few more abilities later in the game, it still doesn’t make for the most compelling gameplay. On a similar note, you’ll really need to enjoy skulking in the shadows and running for your life if you want to get the most out of the game — which, to be completely honest, I just don’t.

Asobo Studios needs to be applauded for creating something so stunning and fantastic in every way. It’s not easy to make you care about characters in a short dozen or so hours, and the fact that A Plague Tale will be etched into my memory is no small feat. I don’t like to loosely throw around the term “Masterpiece”, but this is absolutely one of my favorite games that I enjoyed whole heartedly in recent memory. Needless to say, this is one plague you won’t want to avoid.
