They are cast out alone into the medieval French countryside to fend for themselves. Their home attacked by the Inquisition, who are searching for Hugo. This introduces the intrigue and danger into A Plague Tale: Innocence, a third-person adventure which combines puzzles, stealth, combat, and well a plague of rats. For most of the game you’re making all these considerations with your little brother Hugo in mind. Their relationship goes from circumspect to genuine affection, and it’s one of the most intricate depictions of a sibling relationships introduced into a video game. A Plague Tale is indeed a good game. After a couple of scenes you’ll notice some reuse of the rat plague effects, but those aren’t game breaking concerns. For mr it was the three boss fights that seem to interrupt the eve and flow of a game that otherwise takes a completely different approach in story telling, and for me they felt only out of place in the game’s overall storytelling. I can’t explain without spoiling the game’s story, but I do wish that A Plague Tale: Innocence had found other methods of communicating some moments in the game. The graphics are beautiful, the voice acting and relationship between a brother and sister blossom, and in the end A Plague Tale: Innocence provides you with a unique experience that lasts somewhere in the 12 to 15 hour range depending on your skill and problem solving ability to complete your unique adventure. The game often falls flat, though, when it attempts more high-paced combat scenarios, as the controls and the super-slow auto-aim are just not fit for that task. Also, there is sadly very little payoff to finishing the game, as the finale is kinda underwhelming story-wise (gotta set up the sequel...) and the lack of a New Game Plus or some other bonus means there isn't any reward on the "game" side either.

All in all, I'd recommend this for anyone who isn't opposed to linear, story-driven games and stealth gameplay (and I will say that I enjoyed this quite a lot more than Uncharted 4, actually). It's on Game Pass, too, so if you have that, go check it out.

An absolutely beautiful masterpiece! An enthralling story, with some fun straightforward gameplay. Some light puzzle solving. Amazing graphics! Nothing really to complain about except I wish there was more! One thing I'll say is I enjoyed the more story oriented parts than when the game gets more challenging with it's gameplay mechanics.

A Plague Tale is a stealth puzzle game where you play as Amicia as she sets out to find a cure for her sick little brothr hugo
Immediately this game reminded me of shadwen,
This almost felt like a more polished AAA budget successor
The game takes place during the plague, there are rats everywhere and guards for some reason that’s up to you to find out trying to capature your little brother
This is a 12hours tale full of emotion and great story telling
Im so happy to see games wit ha narrative focus still thriving in a gaming world all about online and loot boxes
The narrative here pulls you along and is the highlight of this game for me..
I always love it that no matter how frustrated or over a section of a game I get that there a good story that’s pulling me forward to see whats next..
Thankfully a plague tale isn’t full of frustrating moments
This game isn’t challenging one bit, however it still manages to be engaging,
Its no walk through the park, you have to distract guards and use fire to get your way through the sea of rats
You aren’t completely defensless though, you’ve got a sling
You can gather materials throughout the world to craft different items for this sling, you have a rock that can be used to distract guards or head shot them and as the game progress youll unlock new abilities such as setting fire to burnable object to scare the rats just to name a few…
This adds a styx or even a dishonored layer of theres more than one solution to moving onto the next section of the game
and chckpoints here are great, so youll rarely have to redo large sections of the game if you fail..
And thankfull A plague tale does a great job of keeping the environment fresh as well as the gameplay, however this is where my biggest issue with the game comes into play,
A plague world goes for a tense feel rather than a fun kids creating mischief feel which is fine…
This means that you cant just run through the game crafting whatever whenever…
you need materials to upgrade your arsnel and certain materials are scarce
These items are more for I have no other option…
but this also means that 12 hours of stealth can get taxing…
A plague tale doesn’t suffer from pacing problems, in fact it does a great job most of the time at giving you a break from the action to just enjoy story pieces and sets.. but I would’ve liked more of this… more slow walk, talk, enjoy the plague moments…
All in all A plague Tale Innocence is a unique experience set in an intriguing world with a well written and directed story guaranteed to keep you hooked
I give A Plague Tale: Onnocence

A good overall experience. Great story and art, but mediocre gameplay. Some sequences were very offensive in the design department, having to guess the 'correct answer' how to beat them, after more than enough tries. Another 'game' with these same problems, that's the real plague in the AAA (and some AA) industry today.

    The diverse environments are amazing.
    The character interactions are superb.

As well, for those like me, this game does NOT rely on an idiot hud and has customization.

No, the story does not get convoluted or weird or become a mess at the end. All one has to do is be able to grasp one simple concept: its a video GAME that we PLAY and it has...an ending.

However, the writers have told their original fantastical tale superbly, step by step in a truly meaningful and unique way and, yet, still provided great GAMEPLAY that combines perfectly with the story.

    No, this isnt dishonored, thankfully.
    No, this isnt open-world, thankfully.
    Yes, this is linear, thankfully.
No, it is NOT a 10-15 hour game: as usual, those numbers are for those who rush through games in their myriad of ways.

25-30 on your first playthrough easily if you are a thorough gamer, like myself and love to soak up the atmosphere and experience ALL the game has to offer. Obviously, searching the ENTIRE map is a given.

As usual, do yourself a favor and do not CHEAT or cheapen the experience by using outside sources for knowledge to make your way through the game. You only have one time to play it once.

For example, not referring to collectibles, there are story tidbits you will miss unless you find them.

A second playthrough and the achievements absolutely add replay value. (a third if you want to go all stealth or add restrictions)

The gameplay: a girl with a sling and alchemy who must sneak and fight her way throughout. Simple, yet, diverse enough to satisfy.

As well, this offers gameplay replayability for those so inclined, such as, myself through self-imposed restrictions. (other games receive this accolade but for dimwitted reasoning many do not give this game the same credit)

No, its not a walking simulator.
Yes, the puzzles arent the hardest and most complex in existence, but, not only do they not need to be, but, when compared to other games they stand up just fine.

No, this game is absolutely NOT a walking cut-scene. That is distortion and lies put forth by those who simply dont enjoy these types of games or foolishly compare this game to games of different genres.

Thus, proving they dont understand a thing about how to review a game.

Anybody who puts this below a 9/10 is not objectively reviewing the game and placing an undue burden on this game while accepting those same issues in other games.

For example, to say this game is “linear” and then downgrade it for that purposeful development choice is the epitome of foolish.

To complain that this game is “short” and has “no multi-player” is the epitome of foolish and blatant hypocrisy.

For me, some of my minor annoyances were: a few foolishly placed auto-saves and a controller scheme that takes a short period of time getting used to. (btw, they are NOT “clunky”)

As well, i was disappointed the in-game characters would yap and give spoiler information for situations and puzzles: an obviously poor decision by the devs.

The same goes for the amazingly annoying decision to block off backtracking through environment blocks and/or autosaves: in this age of technology and with many collectibles its unacceptable. I went into this game as a 4 decade gamer who likes single-player only games, rpgs and thought i was about to walk my way through a simulator. I went into it thinking of a sensua type experience. Thankfully, it was a whole lot more and i came out as a man who had an amazing gaming experience and quickly began another playthrough to again experience the story of Amicia and her amazing knights. Wow! What a masterpiece!

The story, for about the first half of the game, is very intriguing and has a great sense of mystery, but it takes a turn for the ridiculous at around the 4th quarter.

My biggest complaint is the sudden difficulty spike during the final chapters. The difficulty was almost perfectly balanced leading up to this, then suddenly devolves into cheap trial and error.

For a budget game, it's definitely better than you'd expect, but it's not something I'd encourage anyone to rush home and download. If anything, I'd say wait for a price drop. It's worth your money, but not $50 of it.

Trial and error should not be a part of a game like this, where deaths can really break immersion. Everything about it is dull. Characters are forgettable, the story is nice, but lifeless, voice acting is annoying, gameplay gets old quickly and the lack of depth and replayability murders any reason to ever touch it again. Really, did anyone ACTUALLY like ANY character? Hugo is the worst kid ever!

The combat and "bosses" were nice, but you don't see a lot of it.
Some mechanics felt dumb, like why do you upgrade items with the same tools you need to craft slingers??
Stealth was basic, but lacked any challenge. Puzzles were clever at first, but repetitive later on. The graphics were good and the pacing was decent, but the writing failed to keep me hooked. I couldn't care about almost anything going on. Also, that ending was VERY bland.

    Negative points:
    - Graphics are outdated
    - The character moves to the direction you look at
    - A lot of unnecessary deaths because of unclear level design
    - There are just a couple of enemy character models. I killed the same guy over and over again
    - The last two chapters it became repetetive
    - Still had to look up what was going on to make sense of the story.

The game makes you walk absurdly slow while you're holding a slowly extinguishing twig as to try to fit in some kind of intensity but everything is absurdly easy. It borrows heavily from the God of War dynamic where you send your smaller brother through to areas to open up for you as Kratos did with Atreus sometimes you get to kill guys with your slingshot but mostly your crouching in tall grass walking slowly or holding a burning twig walking slowly. The mix in "sprinting" sections which are immediately forgetful and not the least bit tense or challenging. Oh and they kill your signing the first 5 minutes. This game gets way too much praise. I almost gave up on this one and I'm glad I didn't!

The story follows a young girl who is pretty quickly tasked with a quest to protect her younger brother while they sneak through a city and countryside infested with deadly rats and evil men.

The game is not really great at the beginning, but it does begin to improve and you wind up really getting invested in the characters by the end. If you can get past the fact that you spend most of the game escorting an annoying kid around, you're in for some really cool moments.

Most of the gameplay is stealth-based, which is easy enough to not be frustrating. The puzzles were also very clever-using the vast array of tricks that you learn to make you think outside the box.

The dialogue and voice acting was not really that great, but it does get the point across and it's fairly bearable. I think the story was interesting enough to carry everything through.

The level design is probably the greatest thing about the game. As soon as you find yourself making your way across a rat infested battlefield trying to hide in the shadows while using the rats against the guards, you'll be hooked.

Definitely a highly recommended game! I don't know that I would play through it again, but worth completing for sure!

And then after what felt like an enternite get to be killed because I missed a F*CKING rock with the useless sling...

The graphics are astonishingly good, and the story is great, although it focuses on a small girl protecting her five years old brother (if that sounds annoying to you, stay away). The recreation of medieval France is extraordinary and very immersive, especially since the supernatural elements are delimited to the plague and the game is otherwise very well grounded (and has no combat in the traditional sense).

Unfortunately, the gameplay is poor, as it consists mostly on scripted sequences were you have one or two obvious, pre-designed ways to solve every encounter. There is very little opportunity for exploration, if any, and any attempt at staying out of the scripted area will be met with invisible walls or scripted deaths, which can become very frustrating the very few times you may miss the intended path (which is otherwise very hard to miss, as the game will blatantly point you towards the solution as soon as you delay yourself for a few seconds, even if it is extremely obvious).

I'd say the outcome is still very positive thanks to the high production values, especially if you invest in the story and the characters. Let's hope the sequel improves the gameplay with more traditional stealth options and especially a lot more freedom for the player. The concept would be a great fit for a semi-open world game.

Who would have thought a complete game with no microtransactions and an amazing single-player story experience would succeed? Honestly, this game is fantastic. I've played through twice now and can certainly say this is one of the best releases this generation. The story and characters are original and are so well written. The gameplay is varied, innovative, and exciting, especially with the amazing suspenseful soundtrack. The graphics are phenomenal and the acting is top-notch. My only issue with the game is the slight decline in the story during acts 15-16 (roughly after the Hugo Mission, until the final boss fight). The death scenes aren't very impactful at all if I'm honest, and the Nicholas fight is pretty damn average. Despite those small hiccups, this game is well worth a playthrough. I'd love to see more studios release games like this. I heard there is a sequel in development and I cannot wait for what Asobo Studios has in store for the next installment! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The characters and the story made this game, I didn't think I would end up being so attached to the point of getting emotional and wanting more of them at the end. What I enjoyed the most, generally speaking, is that this felt like a complete journey, as it took us to a variety of situations with the characters that weren't limited just to horror or fantasy. The dark atmosphere, suspense, and mystery in the second chapter built an unique experience that I would really love to relive, the sense of adventure I got when the group found the castle somehow inspired me to explore the world just to find a similar place and adopt it as a shelter, and it's impactful how much of the horror factor is based on the crude reality; Europe was such an horrible place to live by the time of The Inquisition and The Black Death, with constant conflicts making everything worse. It makes you think how much innocent blood has been spilled because of extreme beliefs. A detail I loved was how, instead of getting immediately thrown into the action as always, we got to experience those beautiful and bittersweet moments of calmness and peace between the characters, highlighting what finding a new home and a new family means to those who have lost everything. All these chapters in the castle are staying with me, forever. Expand

The Inquisition is making in-roads into the country and a rat plague is killing people. You play as Amicia de Rune, daughter of Nobleman Robert de Rune, as the two are exploring the forest with their dog Lion. This serves as the tutorial where you learn how to use your sling and traverse the landscape stealthily. Not long after that however Lion chases a wild boar into a darker area of the forest and gets dragged to his death by some unknown force, causing Robert and Amicia to retreat back to the safety their home. Their respite is brief as the Inquisition invades their home, slaughtering everyone, including Robert. This forces Amicia’s mother to sacrifice herself to ensure that Amicia and her younger brother Hugo get as far away from their home as possible.

The game’s characterization of it’s two main protagonists are well done. Their relationship at the start is kind of awkward. It’s clear that Amicia has a stronger relationship with her Father than with her Mother and Hugo, the latter two spending most of their time together in Hugo’s room as Beatrice tends to some ailment in Hugo’s blood. Being forced into this dangerous new world alone certainly doesn’t help Amicia and Hugo get off on the right foot. Amicia serves as the voice of reason and responsibility while Hugo serves as the innocent, wide-eye kid that he is. Initially, Hugo’s naivety and childlike whimsy, such as being fascinated by frogs blowing bubbles while underwater, frustrates Amicia as the two of them are trying to avoid danger and survive being hunted by enemy soldiers. However, it’s that same childlike wonder that makes Hugo easier to like as it’s juxtaposed to this death and disease riddled world. Throughout the game, Hugo and Amicia can stumble across various types of flowers, which serve as one strand of the games collectibles. Once discovered, Hugo plucks one of the flowers and places it in Amicia’s hair, an act that does a phenomenal job of illustrating the development and warmth of their relationship. As the game progresses, the two grow more trusting of each other and their abilities, becoming more comfortable around each other often cracking jokes and sharing stories about their parents. By the end, you really do get a sense of how far Hugo and Amicia have come in terms of their familial bond.

At first, the core gameplay loop revolves around primarily stealthing around enemy soldiers. Although it’s not always a welcomed strategy, there are times where direct combat is involved using your sling to launch rocks to stun or kill enemies. Head shots are the name of the game here, but the game auto aims like a bastard, making head shots almost insulting easy. The AI can sometimes be as dumb as door nails, all too easily distracted by loud noises, then slowly trudge over to where they though they heard it, stand there befuddled for a minute and trudge back with the customary “Must’ve been my imagination”. I was also able to cheese an enemy by getting him stuck around a light trap and horde of rats, walk around him even though he could clearly see me and then take him out with some “Somnum”.

Then the game introduces the plague in the form of rats that behave like they’re demonically possessed. Their glowing red eyes and collective squealing as they nip at your feet, waiting for the moment to devour you and strip your body of all it’s flesh like a pack of piranhas. They erupt from the ground like a geyser and burst through the walls, flooding an area like water. The shear number of them on screen at any one time and how beautifully they’re animated is quite the spectacle. The gameplay loop then centres around using fire and light puzzles to move hordes of rats out of your path, trap them somewhere or cause them to kill enemies for you. Needless to say if you get caught amongst the rat horde, it’s has the potential to be an instant death.

The game also features a crafting system that allows you to upgrade your Sling, Equipment and Alchemy. You can craft projectiles such as “Ignifier” which allows you to light torches, braziers and flammable materials. “Devorantis” which, when aimed at an enemy’s helmet, will force them to throw it off priming them for a head shot from the sling.

Performance wise, this game is great. The graphics are absolutely stunning, it’s the type of world that I’d love to explore more in VR, minus the rat plague of course. Not once during my 13 hour play through did the game ever hitch, stutter, lag, crash or run sub-optimally in any way.

Overall, A Plague Tale tells a beautiful story of family relationship building and resilience in face of monumental danger. A loss of innocence but a gaining of maturity and self-sufficiency while dealing with the horrors of war and disease. This game really put Asobo Studio on the map for me and it’s one of the best games I’ve played this year.

The visuals, atmosphere and backgrounds of this game are sad but stunning to look at. The music is just brilliant and for me the best part of this Game.

Gameplaywise it has his flaws especially at the beginning when the stealth mechanics are mostly the same and you dont have any different ways to do the path. At the point when you control the rats you become really powerful but its very late at the game, maybe because the controling of the rats and Amicia is challenging.

The Story is well written but lacks of a interesting enemy. The Inquisitor is boring.

Give the Game a Try its worth it and I only needed 11 hours to complete it.

But first, what is the game about?
The game takes places during 1348, Science isn´t that far advanced and religion is one of the biggest parts when it comes to a sickness.
Like the title says it is about the Plague which is portraied by hundreds and hundreds of rats that run around the streets and infest people or even eat them completly.
Amicia and her brother Hugo have to flee from the inqusition after their family was slaugthered by the inqusition.
All because Hugos sickness is to believed to have something to do with the Plague.
The game is mostly about the relationship between the two characters, which gets closer over the time and find an answer to Hugos sickness.
To not spoil anything thats where I stop the small story recap.

Let´s begin with the not that good part, but still enjoyable: The Gameplay

You play as Amicia. A teenage girl with a sling shot as a weapon. She was trained by her father and perfected the slingshot.
And that is also most part of the gameplay, combined with lots of stealth and small "puzzles".
With you slingshot, you can kill or distract enemys or interact with the surroundings.
Most of the time you do exactly that, distract one enemy, then kill the other, progress and do it again.
Sometimes the Plague / the rats can be a challenge.
They are afraid of light so you have to do some small puzzles with torches or other light sources to make a way trough the rats.
Sometimes the game combines the rats and the enemys, so you can use your skills with the slingshot to either kill the enemys and make a way trough the rats, or use the enemys as a bait for the rats.
The gameplay itself as you can guess is pretty simple and the upgrading system (collect materials to get a bigger bag for more materials or ammunition) isn´t that much of a selling point.
But it is fun and the difficulty isn´t that high either so you can enjoy the story, which is the best part of the game.

With the story and atmosphere during the gameplay the developer archieves what was his goal in my opinion: you can completly focus on the characters nd don´t get distracted by a difficult puzzle or hard enemys.
because the characters are and interactions with eachother and the world are the core of this game.
As mentioned above Amicia is accompanied by her brother hugo, who is very young, I guess around 6.
At the beginning of the game they are very astrenged, but get closer to eachother, the more they witness.
Also interacting with the world is different, while Hugo isn´t that much aware of what´s going on Amicia is sometimes broken, when she has to kill, sees corpes and stuff like that.

The game has some very emotional scenes and you learn to like the characters.

So if you are in search for an easy game with a fantastic story, get this game.
Of course there are some AI glitches and you can very easily escape the enemys but if you are not bothered by that you can have a fanatstic and emotinal story with some nice twists, shocking moments and great scenes.

I can´t give it a 10/10 because the gameplay tries to much but is way to simplified and not innovative.

I thought the stealth mechanics vastly improve as you progress through the game and I find the story to be somewhat mature dispute the fact that it revolves around two siblings trying to make their way in world that is depressingly sinister. My one complaint for the game is that the enemy AI are not designed that well and I found many stealth sequences of the game to be way to forgiving since stealth is the main way that you progress through chapters. Gameplay is also very satisfying, combat is engaging. Usually I do not stealth games, but this one is made the right way. I never felt like the game was funky and unfair. The opposite. If I screwed up, I died. But never due to a faulty enemy.

Kept me invested in the characters journey from beginning till the end.
For 3 days I could not play anything else, absolutely loved it.
    A rare 10/10 from me.

Sorpresa total. Juegazo totalmente recomendado.

This game is simply beautiful, the story is just so sad and emotional that you connect with the characters, but I think the battle mechanics and animation of deaths could be better, I think is one of the best games of 2019.

Very good voice acting and characters which make up for relatively simplistic and weak gameplay and story. Difficulty level needs a good hike to be truly rewarding as resources are over-abundant and checkpoints very frequent. Very little replay value but I do think the characters will stay in my memory for a long time.

A Plague Tale:Innocence is a narrative based game with great character progression over time. It's a light game which is quite the opposite of dark souls with great narration and story. I played this game on game pass and didn't pay for it which will effect my rating.

So when I started this game I knew nothing about it and it really amazed me how freaking good it is. This is also a reason why i wont say much about it so everyone can get this same feeling. The best way to do this by just summing up all the things why this game is so good. PRO's - you can't really do

    PRO's
    - you can't really do much than just be stealth and kill things with a slingshot. This maybe sounds weird but the thing is that the stuf you can do feels so satisfying that you get a smile everytime you do it.
    - The story is freaking great.
    - The graphics look amazing and also the performing of the game is really good! (played on xbox one s)
    - The game has a amazing atmosphere.
    - The characters in this game feel unique and real as they all have their own problems.
    - I normally hate stealth but this game proved me wrong and made it fun and gave a lot of freedom later on when you as a player where more experienced and used to the mechanics.

    Cons
    - Hugo can be a little annoying sometimes but i can see that as extra step of character development because maybe that is intended to be that way and it feels real.

So my rating will be a 9/10 and I will always recommend people to play this game and someone will never be not satisfied by playing it. It just simple is a really amazing game most people never even knew it existed.

This game had enormous potential. I was pretty surprised by its dreadful, gothic atmosphere built by the soundtrack (a work of art), and the story. Also, the most important thing in a story about a pair of siblings is the writing of characters. This is done very well in this game. I have a terrible problem of remembering people's names, therefore, the game deserves some credit because I am capable of this: Amicia, Hugo, Roderic, Arthur, Lucas, or Mélie which clearly states that they were credible in their emotions and actions. The graphic is good, nothing special. It fits the atmosphere and the rats are impressive. However, the game suffers from its gameplay, which is its big negative. This is a stealth game in which the protagonists are a teenager and a 5-year-old boy. What completely destroys the credibility and immersion is that they are a pair of young Garrett's children. They can sneak almost under a guard's legs unnoticed as if they were trained by Corvo. In other stealth games (Thief, Dishonored, etc) we play as a professionalist, that's why this gameplay is not working here. In the game, there are some fights (quite a few, actually) and they are bad as well. The player uses Amicia's sling and JUST that sling. Also, this has many absurds like the above-mentioned stealth mechanics: every guard who has no helmet dies from a single shot from a sling, the main boss which is definitely someone who has no protection on their head has to be shot 3 times. This is just silly. The game losses its edge after 8 chapters and gets really boring. It is worth playing due to the story and characters. A Plague Tale Innocence had the potential to become a medieval 'the Last of Us' but in the end, it does not work well. Still, it is a below-average game. Expand

Good story. Ok execution. Horrible crafting system. Frustrating control setup. Too linear to enjoy properly. Freedom of movement is limited. Often times you'll want to run and the game won't allow it. Completed on XB Gamepass, or would have rated lower if I had to spend money on this. You will die in this game due to poor control and aiming no doubt.

One of the most slept-on games of last gen. It's different and it's incredibly well-made. No real issues with it and it's incredibly impressive that, I think, this game is technically a AA game. It's a unique experience and I think all the characters are near-perfect. It's a great time.

I really enjoyed this game from start to finish. When I wasn't playing the game I was still thinking about it. The gameplay is great, there is a heavy focus on stealth and puzzles. The characters and story are both great. I was blown away by how much I liked this game. Thanks to Game Pass for letting me try this hidden gem, it will probably find its way to my physical shelf as well.

Me lo acabo de pasar a través del Gamepass. Este juego se divide por capítulos. Gran historia, tiene sus partes de lógica y puzle, y, un final épico.

The story isn’t terrible, to be fair, but as I said, it’s built around a girl escorting her mostly useless little brother through peril after peril. Even after he gains a few more abilities later in the game, it still doesn’t make for the most compelling gameplay. On a similar note, you’ll really need to enjoy skulking in the shadows and running for your life if you want to get the most out of the game — which, to be completely honest, I just don’t.

Asobo Studios needs to be applauded for creating something so stunning and fantastic in every way. It’s not easy to make you care about characters in a short dozen or so hours, and the fact that A Plague Tale will be etched into my memory is no small feat. I don’t like to loosely throw around the term “Masterpiece”, but this is absolutely one of my favorite games that I enjoyed whole heartedly in recent memory. Needless to say, this is one plague you won’t want to avoid.

A Plague Tale: Innocence wasn’t even on my radar and I’m ashamed because I would have missed out on this great game and now that I’ve told you, don’t make the same mistake I almost made.
