  • Summary: "99Vidas" is a brawler set in a contemporary world, but that pays tribute to both the classic and the new in the gaming industry. Brought to you in 16-bit pixelated glory, chock-full of references to not only gaming but also 80's and 90's pop culture. "99Vidas" takes full advantage modern era gameplay mechanics, making it the best of both worlds.

6 stages (with more to come) will take you on a journey to different parts of the world to face hordes of fierce enemies and relentless bosses, but you don't have to do it alone: you can face this challenge with up to 3 other players in co-op play, both local and online.

As a child of the 1980s and 1990s, brawlers have been one of my favorite genres. They’re great in small doses if you need to work out some aggression, and yet they’re also fun when you wanna power through them and get to that ending. QuByte has shown that the genre has a spot in their hearts, as well, and they’re helping share the love by giving the game a sub-$10 price point. Without a doubt, 99Vidas will rough you up, but it’s also charming enough to help you back onto your feet, dust you off and welcome you back for another go with no hard feelings.

Brawlers are meant to be played in one sitting, with friends, while the sound of button smashing drowns out the catchy music coming out of the TV. By that standard alone 99Vidas is successful.

There just isn’t much else to say about 99Vidas. It is a solid, if not uninspired beat ‘em up that delivers exactly what it promises. I would have loved to see online co-op and better paced levels. As it sits though this is a solid purchase for anyone who grew up with games like Streets of Rage or Final Fight.

Thankfully 99Vidas does have some good points and it does have a few nostalgic moments here and there, which is great. The game shines its brightest when played with friends and I must admit that when I played it with friends we all had an incredible amount of fun. When played on your own it can be fun at times, but unfortunately the steep difficulty curve when played alone can be very frustrating and annoying. What the game does really well is that it keeps the gameplay very simple and this easy pick up and play style makes the game perfect to revisit every now and then. I just wish that the campaign was a little longer because as soon as you get into it the game comes to an end, which is a shame. I will say though that each level has been done really well and they have also implemented a lot of upgrades for you to unlock. These upgrades are actually pretty decent and they do a great job of being satisfying and rewarding when used. They don’t however feel satisfying when used against the bosses because no matter what you do you just can’t shake off the generic feel of the bosses. The presentation side of the game is packed full of nostalgic moments, and I was a big fan of the presentation. The pixel art style has been done really well and the accompanying music takes you back to your youth, which is awesome. At the end of the day fans of classic brawlers will fall in love with 99Vidas almost immediately because it does the basics extremely well. It does have a few problems here and there and it may lack when it comes to innovation, but when played with friends you take part in an enjoyable adventure that’s packed full of nostalgia and for that reason it gets a recommendation from me.
