Bitmap Bureau has done a top notch job of creating a game that provides you with the nostalgia of the golden age of gaming. They manage to bring their own twist with everything in the game revolving around the number 88, which seems a bit odd at first, but once you get into the game it is what makes it truly enjoyable and makes 88 Heroes stand apart from other platformers. I have to say that I am definitely looking forward to what Bitmap Bureau has to bring us next, perhaps an 88 Villains or 99 Heroes is around the corner.

88 Heroes is a game that tells the same old saving the earth story but in a unique way. With 88 heroes on offer here, each time you play the game you'll get something different, be it good or bad. The 88 levels themselves are quite short but are more than challenging enough, especially as you get nearer the end. Unfortunately, some of the heroes are literally useless and make it almost impossible to get through the level without them facing an untimely death. Aside from that, and a few control issues, the game is 88 kinds of fun and offers plenty of replayability if you want to earn all of the achievements.

Not only is 88 Heroes a brilliant achievement for Bitmap Bureau, but, more than anything else, it is fun to play. Maybe it can be a little frustrating at times, but that comes with the platforming territory. The varied and fun gameplay, the different level areas, the humour, and finally the music (which is a chiptune masterpiece) all add up to make a truly fantastic game.

88 Heroes is a surprise: visually stunning and with a hard difficulty level. It has various quotes from 80s movies, and great pixel art work behind it.

Loads of variety in characters. Each character controls slightly differently. Some are more useful then others but it depends on what hero youLoads of variety in characters. Each character controls slightly differently. Some are more useful then others but it depends on what hero you get for which level. Each level a new hero is given at random so you don't know who your going to get which keeps the gameplay really interesting. Once a hero is killed then that hero will not appear again in your pool of 88 Heroes. You have to complete the 88 levels in 88 minutes, and each level has 88 seconds to complete. See the theme here! Each level is hand crafted so that each hero can complete all levels, which is a fantastic achievement for the level designers. All really creative and all pose a different challenge. I would fully recommend 88 Heroes to all ages and you will have a good laugh. The villain, Dr. H8 will spout out random comical phrases when you die or complete a level, in his classic English humour, from the comfort of his desk as he watches you on his CRT television, scan lines included. 10/10 and also available as a physical PlayStation 4 copy on Amazon for £20, a bargain for collectors.
