A video game that even slightly resembles the Mega Man series has my interest and full attention because it’s a series that has delivered me so much joy over the year’s and at the end of the day as far as platformers go it’s up there with the very best. 20XX has been on the PC for some time now and from the moment I first saw it I was very eager to get to grips with it. Thankfully its finally made its way to the Xbox One and even though it has a few imperfections to say I enjoyed my time with the game would be a massive understatement. Obviously if you’re trying to capture the true feel of a game like Mega Man then you have to have very good platforming elements, and thankfully I’m pleased to say that they’ve got this aspect of the game spot on. By getting this important aspect right it means the gameplay ends up being an incredible amount of fun and that’s exactly what 20XX delivers to you. In fact the game was that fun that I quickly forgot about the game’s high difficulty curve and that’s impressive because at times the game’s difficulty can cause you a few frustrating moments here and there. As I said though I was easily able to look past this and I’m glad I did because in terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to be getting on with and the best thing is that the content has a lot of variety thanks to the inclusion of the procedural engine. Despite it having a lot of variety in most areas it would’ve been nice to have seen a little more variety when it came to the enemies you face though because facing the same type of enemies can become a little tedious every now and then. Thankfully though defeating them didn’t become tedious and that was mainly down to there being a huge amount of upgrades for you to sink your teeth into and the best thing is that each upgrade actually felt different, which is great. Without a doubt one of my favourite things about this game was its presentation. Visually the game has managed to implement a retro look whilst also having a modern feel to it as well. The sound design also offers you a retro and modern vibe at the same time as well and when both the visuals and sound design combine together the gameplay becomes even more fun. At the end of the day if you like platformers with a Mega Man feel then you will thoroughly enjoy what 20XX has to offer. I really enjoyed my time with the game and if a little bit of a story was included then I probably would’ve enjoyed the game even more. That being said at the end of the day 20XX does more than enough to get a thumbs up from me. Expand

Despite my sounding somewhat negative, 20XX is actually a very good game built upon a solid and well tested foundation. Most of my grievances come from a personal place made of emotion and lack of experience with the source material. Still, there is the part of me that struggles to see a need for games that intentionally limit themselves to a set of old rules that no longer exist. 20XX is a game, more than most, with a clear audience in mind and flaunts that with no shame.

Without a doubt this is a fantastic playing and looking game. There are a few issues with the rogue-like elements and the boss fights can be a bit lacking, but that doesn’t stop 20XX from being a well made action platformer, and one worthy of comparing it to the legendary Mega Man series. Players looking for a new platformer to sink into will find a great time here, and any Mega Man fan should not hesitate to pick this one up. There’s a lot to love here and the things that it does right more than make up for its shortcomings.

Those who enjoy both roguelike experiences and adore Mega Man-inspired games will be in heaven. Casual gamers, achievement hunters, and impatient players will be in hell. The vanilla game is already pretty difficult, and all of the extra options the game has only makes it more unforgiving. The daily and weekly challenges only apply to the hardcore, giving little to do for everyone else.
