Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a refreshingly simple, straight forward and fun shooter.

It's big, dumb action on a grand scale, and manages to give Gears of War a pretty good run for its money.

While it does have some dents in the armor, there is no doubt that it is a worthy title.

With multiple difficulty levels, competitive multiplayer, and the incoming co-op update, there's plenty here to keep both the die-hard fans and those who've never heard of the word "Ultrmarines" busy.

With multiplayer in tow, Space Marine represents a pretty solid foray into third-person action, particularly for a developer which founded its reputation on real-time strategy.

The studio has done something in this title a lot more difficult than it may seem: They've formed a very good game of genre staples and straightforward shooter mechanics, dabbling in enhancements that succeed.

All told, Space Marine is a very well-made game, and perhaps the first that truly lives up to THQ's promise of blockbuster-quality cinematic games.

This game gets a thumbs up from me, and if you're looking for a fun afternoon of mindless fun kills where you don't have to go out of your way to find the action, Space Marine is one of the best ways to do it on the 360.

Small issues aside (including the lack of co-op on the disc), Warhammer 40K Space Marine is an epic battle that deserves your time and attention. The multiplayer, despite being barebones, is great fun, and the single player campaign offers plenty of blood to spill, even if you're a newbie to Games Workshop's world.

Fortunately, it isn't pure fan service: It offers a fast-paced, gory start to a promising new franchise.

Warhammer 40K makes a good initial foray from strategy gaming into action gaming, and hopefully we'll see more epic Space Marine action in the future.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a title that brims with great visuals, solid sound, and some very good gameplay.

An entertaining game with a good gameplay balanced between shooter and hack'n'slash mechanics; it only lacks on the variety side, but it will undoubtedly please every Games Workshop fan.

Space Marine asks players to become single-minded servants to the call of combat in a variety of brutal forms, each equivalent in intensity, efficiency, and ardor. A satisfying, cathartic release, though with minimal cerebral stimulation.

Fans of the Warhammer 40k universe have been waiting a long time for a game like this. A game that manages to capture both the scale of the battle the Imperium is waging and the gritty, blood stained action on the front lines.

Space Marine is solid. Dependable. If intense combat carnage is your thing, you will enjoy this game. If you're a fan of the 40k universe, you will enjoy this game even more. If you are into neither of these things… well, there's always the demo to try out. It never reaches the heights of the top echelon of third-person action games, but it's a good start.

By looking to its own fiction for inspiration, Relic has crafted a fun, exciting shooter that effectively differentiates itself from other games in the genre.

Space Marine gets off to a sluggish start and it never really reaches the lofty heights that long-time fans of the tabletop games probably hoped for, but Relic has still done an admirable job in making their first AAA-level action game - and the online play is a definite fun distraction if not entirely unique or long-lasting.

Relic's Dawn of the War series remains the best video game adaptation of this universe, but Space Marine is a close second. The combat – for both single and multiplayer – pumps out barbaric excitement and continues to improve as the adventure unfolds.

Engaging combat carries Space Marine's campaign and multiplayer a long way, although we can't help but feel like a little more time - or maybe ambition - would have made this game a superstar. Still, it's one heck of an entertaining fragfest, and the ideas here should nicely set up a bolder, hopefully more memorable sequel.

Space Marine's intuitive system will have you carving hordes of enemies with your chainsword, power axe, or hammer in no time.

A wonderfully tight production that brings an authenticity and intensity befitting Games Workshop's beloved universe. While there are some vexing design decisions and the campaign is disappointingly brief, there's nevertheless plenty of content to get stuck into and exquisitely savage combat on offer.

Though it is a good game, it doesn't excel in certain areas such as graphics or diversity.

Space Marine is a terrific title, and proof that Relic's expertise can extend far past the RTS genre they've already conquered. The game is short, in terms of both length and features, but what's there, especially in the single-player campaign, is of the highest quality. Warhammer fans especially will love it.

Relic Entertainment has done a solid job on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, taking the studio's knowledge of the IP working on the Dawn of War series for PC, and putting it to good use. With some better thought out set-pieces and more variety in the gameplay and visuals, this could have achieved greatness. As it is though, Space Marine feels like the foundations for a barnstorming sequel, and goodness knows it deserves one, as there's massive potential here.

Space Marine offers up a decent amount of third person action and tries to offer something new. As a first attempt to a brand new franchise it does everything pretty well and no doubt ticks most of the boxes laid out during its development but it's a shame that certain areas such as the melee combat weren't given a bit more depth.

If you like mowing down hordes of enemies and are looking for a mix of hack'n'slay and shooter, Warhammer 40k: Space Marine will provide great fun for a couple of hours.

A pleasant surprise in the third-person action genre, which results in a frantic action game with a splendid campaign, that Warhammer 40.000 fans will love. It offers constant action and challenges, and has three different difficulty levels to make sure it is accesible por all the gamers.

If you are a fan of Warhammer I would suggest picking up Space Marine for the joy of playing and creating a hulking mass of destruction.

Despite seeming derivative and plain on the surface, Space Marine succeeds in forging its own style. The action remains enjoyable no matter how many enemies you cut down or blast away, and the other elements of the game successfully support the core experience.

Space Marine doesn't break any rules or push any boundaries, but Warhammer fans across the globe might finally have the non-RTS Warhammer game that we've been waiting for.

The swift and graphically violent gameplay makes you feel incredibly powerful, but maintains a consistent challenge. Despite taking itself a little too seriously than it needs to, this is a fun adventure worth experiencing. For the Emperor!

The campaign may be a little short and rough around the edges, but it still is a great adventure that should not be missed by the fans and should be given a try by people unknown with the Warhammer universe.

The artificial intelligence in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is pretty bad and the story is very poor. On the other hand this game is extremely brutal with quite some entertainment value.

In a year of big-hitters, Space Marine is one hell of a surprise.

It's certainly a game worth playing, but if you come into it without a love for the license, you are left with a competent, gory, exciting, but ultimately repetitive action game.

It may not be the best or most original action game, but it's a fine first outing for the franchise, and a rare gem for Warhammer fans.
