    This is perhaps the most heartbreaking and tense episode of anything Telltale has ever made. How Clementine braces for the impact of everything in front of her is up to you -- and where that takes her left me in awe.

    In fact, I was this close to simply quitting the series and not coming back, but Clementine & co. definitely recaptured some of the original Walking Dead magic before the final credits rolled, and I was grateful for that.

    It's the unquestionable high point of a season that did not really know where it should to go. But maybe that's only apt, considering the bleak backdrop of a world where no one ever is safe.

    A few unnecessary sequences hold back the episode a bit, but as a whole, No Going Back serves as a fitting conclusion to season two. And thankfully, it also leaves enough room for more intrigue and drama in season three.

    Even if it's not as awesome as the last episode of the first season, Not Going Back proves to be an excellent conclusion to this story arc. We've known fear, encountered some great characters, felt joy meeting again with an old friend, and rage against someone truly evil. Clem has grown up right before our eyes and thanks to our decisions. All of this has led to an ... ending. And because there are five of them, which are truly different, meaning that the illusion of choice is not an illusion anymore, promises for what to happen next are great.

    What that means for the third instalment remains to be seen, but as the conclusion to this particular story No Going Back lacks the punch of the first season’s finale and becomes an analogue of the second season as a whole: an above-average game which has vainly struggled to step out of its predecessor’s shadow.

    Telltale Games hit a home run with Season 1 of the Walking Dead. It was a near-perfect mix of tension, exploration, character development, and action. The magic just didn't continue into the second season, on the whole. The problem may be more to do with the setting than with the actual game mechanics themselves. As we've seen through any number of zombie-media, there really isn't a whole lot of variety to be found in a post-apocalyptic world beset by walking dead. No one is safe. Any place can be swarmed by zombies or raided by opportunistic and/or sadistic bandits. Some people are brutalized by the environment, others try to persevere in spite of it. Rinse and repeat. The setting changes little whether the player character is an adult man or pre-teen girl.

    This season of The Walking Dead had several memorable moments, to be sure. Reuniting with Kenny, the final scene with Carver, and the end of No Going Back all come to mind. But on the whole, this season's characters were more disposable and cookie-cutter than the first's, and the actual amount of player agency is drastically less. Exploration scenes were a regular occurrence in the first season; in this season, you were lucky to get one per episode. Large parts of most episodes this season felt more like the television show than a game where the player gets to influence the outcome.

    All that being said, the story is still very interesting, the multiple endings are diverse enough to promote replay value, and the price is very reasonable. The ending(s) promise to make Season 3 substantially different. All in all, good enough for it's price point, but a modest disappointment in comparison to the first season.    … Full Review »
