  1. The Maw's a very good game, just don't expect it to rival a title such as Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
  2. In a gaming age where titles like Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 and GTA IV are doing their level best to push the average length of games to well above the 30-hour mark, it's refreshing to have an original, charming and memorable game that can be polished off in a relaxing few hours, without the fear of redoing huge sections or having to perform gamepad miracles.
  3. The Maw is the sort of game you'll play for an afternoon, giggling like a fool the whole time. There's not much more to it beyond that brief but satisfying flurry of amusement, unless you want to go back into each level to harvest all the Achievements, but not every game needs endless replay value. The Maw is charming, cheap and memorable enough that its short lifespan shouldn't put you off.
  4. Average gameplay and an unforgettable main character merge in this short but endearing adventure.
  5. The Maw is a very fun game with a great controls system. We can only regret the shortness of the adventure, because we really wanted to play more. That can be rectified with a great couple of new DLC. Nevertheless, The Maw is a joyful and fun experience. It's a candle while it lasts.
  6. Whether it’s the cute aliens, the bright and impressive visuals, or the moments of humour, it’s hard to criticise the game too much.
  7. With platforming games being somewhat of a rarity these days The Maw is a welcome addition to the Xbox Live library. The game is both charming and fun, especially the main character Maw. If you look beneath the charming surface you'll find quite an ordinary platforming adventure though. But with a reasonable price tag we can't but recommend this title for those in the mood for a new platforming experience.

An accessible platformer that bears more relation to Lemmings and Katamari than it does Mario. [Issue#43, p.114]
  9. It's no classic, but this is still better value, and in some cases better quality, than shop-bought games.

While it lasts, it’s one of the better platformers available on XBLA, and the inability to die and general ease of progression make it ideal for very young gamers. [Mar 2009, p.92]
  11. The Maw is a game that will probably appeal strongly to the younger set. For the rest of the populace, the game's lack of substance will make enjoying the world that Twisted Pixel Games worked hard to create so much harder.
  12. But if you have more MS points than you know what to do with, The Maw is perhaps worth the proverbial weekend fling. Just don’t expect it to stay around long enough for a commitment.

In downloading demo after disappointing demo on XBLA for my 10 year old son, I've gotten used to sizing up games based on their faults and ruling out purchase after purchase within minutes. The Maw is the first game I've really really wanted to see more of, and am willing to pay a great amount to get. My son sat down and worked out the level in moments and it was wonderful, although I suspect he would not be so interested in the game in a few years from now. More Maw! Soon! Please! Full Review »

You play as a blue alien named Frank, who are taken captive inside a big spaceship together with a lot of other animals. There he meets his soon-to-be-friend Maw, a big purple blob with one huge eye and sharp teeth. The ship eventually crashes, and the game begins. The game consists of some puzzles along the way, but the main game mechanic is to find food for Maw, while controlling Frank. Frank controls Maw via a chain, but he can also let Maw roam around free. Some animals give Maw special powers when eaten, and are used to solve puzzles or getting around obstacles. After eating a varying amount of animals, Maw grows and increases in size, and the level's exit opens. Also note that you can't die in this game, which makes the game a bit short, but free of frustration for smaller children. The graphics are truly great, which helps to bring the two hilarious characters to life. The artwork is very well done. This game is refreshing to see on Xbox Live Arcade, due to it's cute characters and humour. I really want to see the Maw character in more titles to come. Though the target audience probably is kids, this is a game everyone can enjoy no matter age. A free demo is available on Xbox Live Marketplace, There is no excuse for not trying this great game.
