I swear is one of the games that has given me more creeps and scares than any other, and i gotta say that I don't get scared that easy. The graphics are awesome considering this is the 360 version. And last but no least, the controls. I don't like third person games because some times they're difficult to control. Well, this is not the case. The major problem you could have is the aiming at the beginning, but you will get used to it as you keep playing. All I can say is that you should try it. I think it's an awesome game. Expand

The Evil Within is a varied, deep, challenging and long game. Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks scare us, they mix puzzles and third person shooting in a reborn survival horror that is visually poor. The Keeper, the Alpha mastodon and other ugly deformed will make you have nightmares.

This game is very good, but really scary . In this game normal graphics, good and scary storyline and I think normal gameplay . This game not really like on Outlast, but this game much better than Outlast . In this game you must make sure that you have not noticed the butcher and complete mission . Amazing horror .

its a good time for the AAA survival horror genre. terrifying ambience, really tough gameplay (in the Dark Souls style of natural difficulty, not scripted trial-and-error), and the graphics are also pretty good. horror or not, Shinji Mikami's games are always a blast to play through, and this is no exception

Good plot and environment, but it leaks for the graphical aspect, that is awful, and for the gameplay control aspects, as the camera and sneak elements. In general, the game is a revival of a forgotten atmosphere represented by Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.

    The biggest waste of 2014

I do not know what the developers were thinking at stake. Probably nothing.
    - The graphic comes from the PS2.
    - The bars above and below limit the field of view.
    - I miss the survival game. All I see is only slaughter.
    - Hordes of enemies instead of horror.

Honestly the game isn't that good. It actually blows. Been there done that..Copy of Rockstar's Max Payne/Manhunt to the extreme, a crappy knockoff. The camera angles are terrible and you'd have a whole hell of an easier time controlling your onscreen character with a banana in a bowl of pudding. 5/10 is generous.

Albeit not the best it could have been, it is still a pretty good game living in the essence of resident evil 4. for those expecting subtlety however, do not play this game; this game is made by Shinji Mikami, expecting subtlety would be like expecting innovation in a NFL game.

The Evil Within is a 3rd person survival horror game where you play as detective Sebastian investigating a scene of a mass murder at a mental hospital and then all of a sudden things start going crazy…
I don’t want to spoil the story but the games setting is actually a pretty cool twist..
But for the most part at least in the beginning the game mixes settings and scenery up…
In fact the first half of this game is great and guaranteed this game a spot on my game of the year least when the time came.. but it didn’t stay this great…
As a survival horror game youre managing your health with pick ups.. your health will regenerate but only slightly.. and when your health is bwelow a certain point you move slowly and aren’t able to run…
But a bit like the game alone in the dark you have weapons here… as you progress the game youll get a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, a cross bow like weapon, there are grenades.. a great variety of weapons for survival and devent drop rate of ammo.. but just enough to keep you staying carful with what you use..
Unique from most survival horror games is that there is an assassins creed like stealth mechanic where you can take out most unaware enemies from behind..
you also have to stealth to disarm traps and get parts the craft cross bolts for your bow…
there are also jars of brain juice around the levels and off of enemies that act as a currency you use to upgrade your stats, buy ammo, and increase the stats of your weapons..
There are mirrors that take you back to the hospital this allows you to save the game as well, but the game will ocassionally autosave
The first half of the game I found to be really enjoyable and terrifying..
I was stressed in a good way and enemies put up a great challenge…
Missions were varied, I felt like I was in a movie..
And then halfway through the game it starts to fall apart..
The game goes from being scary to just frustrating..
Its becomes an anxiety fest of dealing with insta kill enemies, and recourse draining section after recouce draining section.. dealing with spongy bosses, having to thow switch after switch doing it multiple times in the same area to pregress further…
The games initial near perfect progression crumbles and stumbles to a crawl…
Made worse by this games awful checkpoint and autosave system…
The game wont constantly autosave once you find an important item…
And again there are cheap instakill enemies and moments in this game…
They are sometimes completely random, they’ll hit you and you have to go through the 10 minutes of recollecting supplies over and over and over until you get lucky enough to either get away or not activate this random spawn…
And also again… the 2nd half of this game is focused more on anxiety than it is horror..
its not fun replaying these anxiety filled moments
They aren’t even fun the first time…
And the games 2nd half is filled of these moments and trial and error chases with no indication of what you have to do, so you just keep doing it until you get it right with no checkpoints..
But still I pushed forward.. I was overlooking all of the bad because of the intriguing story going through this anxiety fest…
The game would freeze on my a couple of times causeing me to resatart it… no big deal, ill forgive it.. the first half was so good and im so close to this games end..
8 and a half hours into the game.. im on chapter 11 out of 15.. about 2 and a half to 3 hours away from this games credits.. and I run into a game breaking bug…
    That’s right… 3 years later… a Bethesda game (go figure) still has a game breaking bug…
I did play the ps3 version of this game and thought that’s clearly the problem.. so I went to google and no.. this chapter is full of game breaking bugs, more than just the one I ran into that wouldn’t let me progress the game..
I was an hr deep and nothing I did helped, shutting down the game, reloading checkpoints..
dying.. nothing… the game wouldn’t let me progress…
The only thing keeping me from just giving this game a 0 and walking away is that restarting the chapter could’ve probably let me continue.. but once more..
the 2nd half of this game is filled of anxiety, frustration and cheapness…
I wasn’t about to go through that hour and a half I just went through again..
Im walking away from what I thought was initially a great game that crumbled into a good game, but left me with the taste of a bad game…
    I give the Evil Within
    a very generous

Surprised this game has the Bethesda label on it. The quality of this title is not what one would expect from such an epic company. 'The Evil Within' can be fun but it doesn't impress.Seems like a decent imitation of a Resident Evil game. Why?

There are many problems with this game:

    - Some parts of the game are literally seizure inducing. The f***. The level with the safe-monsters was so stupid!

    - VERY BUGGY. There were frame rate issues, pop ins, jagged shadows, and worst of all, busted save points. Thrice I encountered points where I could not save my game. All three times it just outright froze my console, and I had to reset my Xbox 360 -- and this was with the update!

    - There were times in a fight when the bosses would not appear at all. You'd have to start all over again.

    - Poor hit detection. Even if you brushed against certain enemies you'd die and/or be assaulted.

    - Nitpicking here, but sometimes when elements cluster together your character did the wrong action. Say for example, you're trying to pick up green gel, instead he will stomp an enemy.

    - Even fully upgraded your character feels a bit sluggish.

    - Some levels and areas were not well thought out. There was one level where you had these sniper-type enemies to kill. The problem was the designers did not anticipate not having enough ammunition, which could bring the game to a dead stop. Also, this level had issues with my partner. Yet another bug in the game. He got stuck in a wall, and would not help me.

    - The story and characters were very weak. A lot of the story didn't make any sense whatsoever, and it really just went nowhere. The characters were very forgettable too. I didn't care about any of them. There were a lot of cliches. This seemed to take some inspiration from Condemned: Criminal Origins, which did it a lot better.

    - The combat and controls were lacking. For example, even with camera controls, you can get visually stuck, and lose perspective, making the game difficult to play. You can also easily get stuck in a corner, trapped by enemies, with no way to charge through. I did not appreciate how little defense there was. All you can do in this game to dodge enemies is run, and not for very long. In general maneuvering around was a bit of a chore. It worked, but not flawlessly.

    - Sometimes there were areas or parts in the game that looked open to use, but often that wasn't true. This made the gaming experience just a wee extra frustrating. One level I was trying to jump over a raised floor, but instead I got trapped, and crushed by an enemy. Turns out that I could only jump over if I was exactly in the middle, and not anywhere near the side. But it appeared that I was able to do so.

    - Redundancy. Since this is a game where you die a lot this means a lot of redundancy. Which is a problem when you've been doing a lot of work in the game, and then you die, and you lose all the things you've collected.. Huge pain in the bum.

    - Sometimes you just don't know what to do! You have to trigger events, and then it can't be found. A hint, or tip, or something you can have at your request would go a long way.

    - The sneaking and hiding elements were a little under used. I think Bethesda wanted to push for an action game, and hence why you didn't see much of this feature being used. But just a little more sneaking and hiding would've added a greater feeling of suspense.

    - The mandatory install was annoying...!

    - When you finish the game you can restart with new additional elements (i.e. weapons), plus whatever you had from before. Problem is you are stuck on whatever difficulty you chose earlier. So, this reduces replay value. Furthermore, you cannot pick up extra ammo for your new weapons.

    - Casual setting isn't very casual. It's really difficult. Hard mode on other games is equal to the casual setting in 'Evil Within.'

    - The auto-aiming came in pretty handy. It was a pain though when you were trying to aim at things to explode and it aimed at individual enemies instead.

    - Graphics were so-so. Very bad lighting. I could point to much older games that looked better. Alan Wake for example.

    Now what about the good?

    - It's fun to destroy enemies. I liked the explosions of flesh. They really went all out with the gore. Did not seem to hold back.

    - Upgrade system was good although a little slow to progress.

    - The menus of this game and the organization were pretty well done. Nothing too mind boggling. This is something game makers often get wrong.

    - Smashing boxes, and barrels to find things, yes, please. Reminds me of old school games.

    - Puzzles presented were simple. Nothing mind boggling but it got you to stop and think. CONCLUSION: This is a mixed game. It has some good and bad to it. Could be worth a play for the right price. Although unfortunately it's not something I'd run out to purchase. I appreciate that Bethesda tried though. Evil Within is a strong 6/10. Playable but not amazing.

The story makes little to no sense. They give this crazy set-up in the intro, and then never explain anything.

The tutorial is one of the hardest parts of the game, making you unable to run, and punishing you if you follow the game's cues to perform stealth kills. And my favorite part of all: Why, why on God's green Earth, does the game only display on half of your tv screen? I looked into it. The game is intended, by design, to letterbox half of the screen so that you can't see anything. Apparently this was to make it "more cinematic", which makes no sense considering that I'd shut off a movie instantly if it displayed on only half the tv.

Add in some clunky controls, sub-par graphics, and 30 second load times every time you die (I died 92 times) and you have a game that is just a total train wreck. You couldn't pay me to play this again.

I would like to preface this review by thanking The Evil Within for saving me lots of money in the future, as it has discouraged me from buying games the first week of their release. I would also like to state that even though this game is looked upon and often reviewed favorably, there are a large number of reasons as to why I simply don't find it a good game.

The overall structure of the game is Resident Evil 4 down to minute details. The way the enemies attack you, the way many enemies look, quite a few cutscenes are similar, the environments, and I would like to say the combat, but combat in The Evil Within is too awful to compare it to Resident Evil 4. The storyline is different, and also the main selling point of the game. I wouldn't mind playing the DLC's simply to fill in holes in the story (and trust me, very little actually gets explained) but that also adds in a whole different problem; the fact that people who only wanted to pay for one game and get a complete storyline with it are left out. I can't reveal a whole lot without giving away major spoilers, but I think everyone knows where I'm coming from when I say things like "glaring plot holes" (how can Sebastian go from unable to walk at the end of Chapter 1 to sprinting like all hell in the beginning of Chapter 2?) and "incomplete/unexplained story points".

The combat in The Evil Within is an interesting thing, and by interesting, I mean frustrating and atrocious. The way all un-upgraded guns start is with a low "Accuracy" rating, meaning that your aim is unsteady and your bullets tend to miss their mark at medium ranges, which is horribly frustrating, particularly on higher difficulties. I personally feel that where your bullets fly should be dictated by the skill and precision of the player, not an upgrade you purchase for your weapons. The reason why this mechanic is so frustrating is because every single enemy is faster, stronger, and more animate than you are. Even the first and most basic Haunted you encounter can do long sprints to grab you, and those with weapons can do a series of multiple slashing motions that last longer than your sprint time. You can be hit while going into motions, such as over cover, up/down ladders, and using matches, when you're unable to move away or otherwise defend yourself. There are also a lot of occurrences of the game going into a mini-cutscene as you are helplessly stabbed by an enemy, doing massive damage to you. You can't attack, block, or escape, just take the damage for being a little too close to an enemy. That is just with typical Haunted, there is a large number of enemies (Sadists, Laura, Ruvik clones, bomb traps, AlterEgos, the fish, and the Chapter 10 boss) that have the ability to kill you in a single hit regardless, even on Easy difficulty.

As a side note in combat, this game introduced a new mechanic that had potential to be great, the matches. When an enemy was incapacitated or knocked down, you should be able to run up to them, hit B, and toss a match on them to kill them. If there are any other enemies in the area, they should be burned up as well, making matches a great ammo saving tool. Unfortunately for us, the match mechanic is broken. There have been a great number of times where I have run directly up to a fallen enemy and spammed B, and no match was dropped. Within seconds, the enemy was back up beating my face in. There have been other times (particularly against Laura) where I drop the match, the enemy is engulfed in flames, but I still get hit or otherwise killed by an enemy the game considers to be dead. In fact, the first time I fought Laura, I dropped a match on a corpse that consumed her in flames. The screen quickly changed to the move of her beating me to death, while she was shrieking, and the achievement for killing her unlocked on the death screen. A very poorly designed mechanic.

The game presents with a large number of graphic issues and glitches that just shouldn't be present in a 2014 release. I have been tossed through walls, hit through floors, watched enemies descend ladders into a floor, have been hit by dead enemies, have seen massive drops in framerate (usually in critical, speed based parts of the game) and have even seen a video on Youtube where a player was trapped in a room in Chapter 11, because a character wouldn't open the door to progress the level. He died, restarted, reloaded, but all to no avail. Normally the game on 360 looks fine, and looks fantastic on the One, but 360 players will usually encounter multiple glitches before a playthrough is done.

So, there you have it. The game does have its upsides, the enemies look pretty awesome, the story is engaging, and if you really like Resident Evil 4 you may look upon this more favorably. I simply felt I've been here and played this before, in a much better and more polished version.

People often complain about its sagging story in the middle and a boring character and supporting cast, but I see these as the little joys in life. The lack of story in the middle gives you time to wonder what is happening and try to piece it together yourself (good luck with that), and the boring protagonist lets me immerse myself even more. Even if the character responds lightly, it just elevates how truly crazy the game is. This also lets you put yourself in the position because a lack of backstory lets you not wonder about whats really happening to him personally, except in my case, but it lets you think what are YOU about to walk into, not Sebastian Castellanos. Me being me though, I let myself get attached to him. This game will definitely not appeal to every veteran survival-horror player, but there are elements among it that will serve as a callback, like the limited view, the game being a hoarder with ammo and forcing you to compromise, and just the horror elements such as the unknown, psychological fear, and what dominates the game is gore. LOTS OF GORE. Definitely not for the squeamish, but I would highly recommend it to the people that felt cheated out of Resident Evil 5, because this truly feels as a replacement to continue the canon. Even though I liked it and 6, I believe if the series had continued down the path Resident Evil 4 paved, this would probably be the closest to a true RE 4 sequel. Expand

A convoluted compendium of horror clichés that superficially invokes mental illness, The Evil Within distinguishes itself as the most pandering survival-horror game yet.
