Simply fantastic and fun. Easy to pick up but still challenging enough to have struggle.

A far cry from its predecessor, SC2 is a major disappointment. Lesser scale, story (from what little there was in the first game to begin with), and dumbed down game mechanics make this a classic case of sequel slump.

The story is not so much worse then that of the first game. The problem with this is the fact that the first game didn't really have a story worth mentioning. Just like

The story is not so much worse then that of the first game. The problem with this is the fact that the first game didn't really have a story worth mentioning. Just like SC1, the second game tells more or less the same conflict from the perspectives of three different commanders, each belonging to one of the three factions. It does try to have some depth, but any attempt at this is mired by terrible writing and voice acting that is often even worse. My least favorite character is the villain, who tries to come across as sinister but only succeeds is making himself look like a crazy person of the type you would find a loony bin. The gameplay tries to live up to that of the first game, but ultimately fails due to the degree to which everything has been simplified. To build things you now have to pay up front instead of just having a steady enough flow of mass and energy. To make matters worse, the economy system is even more time consuming because you have to set up so many resource structures. There are fewer unit types to choose from as well, so prepare to miss the good old days when you always had the right unit for the right situation. Furthermore, the scale seems like less then a tenth of that of the first game. No more continent sized maps, just small islands. Most if not all of the content you get from this game will be from multiplayer, as the campaigns are not worth playing. However, there is still some fun to be had with matchmaking, particularly for the console version. There are quite a few bugs though, so don't be surprised if you have to wait more then ten minutes for a stable match.

Overall, this game is an average RTS, but still a failure considering how far reduced it is from the original. Speaking of which, if you have the first game and its expansion on your PC, stick with that. There is nothing in this game that will be worth your while over what you already have.

Not near as good as the PC version. Sometimes RTS should stick to PC and concentrate on making that the best experience possible!

Supreme Commander 2 is a good game just not great. I think that SC2 should can the story for Total Annihilation story which is just a battle between two factions. Simple and to the point. Otherwise that game is good and very good RTS.

After I got addicted to the first game and Forged Alliance, I went back on the steam store to find the 2nd game, and being a blind little bat, bought it without reading the reviews. This game broke my heart.

Supreme Commander 2 is MASSIVE disappointment, and is a complete downgrade from the original. Instead of adding new elements, like a new faction perhaps, or new game-play options, they stripped away everything that made the original game fantastic, and most importantly original.

The tech system has been completely removed in favor of a very generic "upgrade" system in which you can purchase upgrades for the various classes (air, land, sea) using a new in game "research" currency. The huge maps from the original have been removed for the most part, and have now been replaced by small liner ones which take away that awesome feeling of epicness that original had.

The units in the game are even fewer than the original game and for the most part are generic and boring.

In addition there are some odd game-play choices, for example while constructing a building, you can only have one engineer work on it at once, why?? remember the first game where you would have 50 of them working on those giant experimentals?

The campaign is not worth mentioned as its story is average at best, and with the rest of the single player experience being so overwhelmingly disappointing, its up to the multilayer to pick up the slack.
which can provide some fun, but thats mostly because it was ripped straight from the original game. The graphics are somehow poorer than Forged Alliance in my opinion, how that happened I have no clue.

All in all a HUGE let down for a new player of the franchise, it is a painfully average rts game that is not at all worthy to carry the name supreme commander. and since we haven't heard anything about a third game, this looks like all we will be left with. great.

While lacking the technicality and nuance of the first game, this was my first Supreme Commander experience and admittedly, it still is a ton of fun and a wild spectacle.

If the learning curve of the original Supreme Commander proved a little too steep for you, then you'll find a lot to like about the sequel. Gas Powered Games streamlined its resource and upgrade systems to make a game that's easier to play, and thanks to a revamped interface much easier to control.
  2. This entertaining strategy sequel is a big improvement over the console original, and bridges the gap between complexity and accessibility.

At once accessible and incredibly deep. But best of all, so much fun. [May 2010, p.81]
