  1. No, Sonic doesn't reach the level of brilliance of Mario Kart Wii, but Sonic and Sega All-stars Racing is still a very charming and challenging racing game for a younger audience.
  2. Suffers from being compared to other comical racing games like Mario Kart, and it is unlikely that you'll prefer it over those games. However, it manages to bring enough of its own flavor through its design to make it feel like a strong competitor.
  3. Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, may not offer the most compelling single player racing experience but does feature a good level of variety.
  4. Though it's easy to dismiss a new Sonic game at this point we were surprised to see that Sonic's first noteworthy title in a long time is a kart racing game. Even though there are some issues with vehicles getting stuck in the environments and the online experience being somewhat limited when it comes to content this is still a highly entertaining kart racer easily on par with main competing franchise Mario Kart.
  5. The racing experience is zippy and robust, while its gleeful celebration of all things SEGA is wonderfully endearing.

This arcade racing game from SEGA is, to some extent, nice to play, but after a while it becomes monotonous. It's fun for the variation, but we don't recommend this title.
  7. Right now, Mario won't be looking over his shoulder, but if this title (and indeed the franchise) continues to grow, we could see a much needed competitive side to the genre that has been severely lacking for a decade now.
  8. Multiplayer doesn't offer much, either.

While the modes themselves work well, the limited options and arenas -- there are only three in total -- kill the potential for fun before you even leave the gate.
  10. This is the best Mario Kart experience one can get without owning a Wii, with party graphics and clever courses. Entertaining for console gamers of all ages.

    Mediocrity wins out. [Issue#93, p.124]
  12. Sega's legacy deserves a better celebration than this competent but unremarkable Mario Kart clone.

A poor start, cheating middle and so-so end lead only to disappointment, and confusion over what should have been the primary gimmick. [Issue#56, p.84]

There's plenty of characters and a tonne of game options (including a fantastic Out Run style mission mode.) The only real downside to All-Stars Racing is the lack of variety with some of the tracks. With such a huge back catalogue of games to choose from, you'll be left wondering why we're seeing three Billy Hatcher themed courses and no Clockwork Knight or Ristar. Despite this, there's plenty to do and a good deal of unlockables. It is however like a bit like a bag of malteasers; sweet while it lasts though you're left feeling a bit empty inside when it's all gone, with everything unlocked and conquered after around 10 - 12 hours of play. There are dozens of missions after you've completed the circuit mode, which is good because they are increasingly more difficult. The graphics are decent and the power ups are as fun as playing mario kart 64 in HD. Not 100% original idea, but funny gameplay. For familiar/casual gaming is a must have. Full Review »
