It’s good for its quality, and gameplay. Possibly one of the better games of the franchise.

This is undoubtedly the best classic 2D Sonic. In addition to having much more levels and content in general, everything is improved. The minigames needed to get them are cool but you can get stressed out (usually because you're not used to it). I realized that it is much more rewarding to get the rings scattered on the map than Mario coins for example, because in addition to gaining an extra life you can become Super / Hyper Sonic.

This Sonic also has a slightly greater focus on the story, but it still remains very basic.

The soundtrack is still ok for me.

If you like something with a more basic and classic feel, you can have more fun playing Sonic 2, but 3 is definitely better.

A strong example of challenging, polished 16-bit platform gameplay. [Oct 2009, p.80]
  2. It is best not to come into Sonic & Knuckles looking for redrawn sprites or HD graphics – this is a faithful port that doesn’t try to crush anyone’s memories of how the game performed in the ‘90’s.
  3. Arguably the last great Sonic The Hedgehog game, even if it's not necessarily one of the best.
