  1. Rocket Knight is a solid revival of a classic Genesis franchise, but it suffers from a tragically short lifespan and high price tag.

Daunting price point aside, Rocket Knight is a fun, albeit short, adventure with a variety of gameplay that doesn't reinvent what was great about the 16-bit era, but instead serves to remind us how much fun it was.
  3. As entertaining as Rocket Knight’s jetpack mechanics and gameplay are, the whole experience still winds up feeling pretty standard.
  4. Rocket Knight certainly bares it's 16-bit brethren well, taking an interesting character with plenty of uniqueness and not spoiling it with a remake and re-visioning.

Control is tight and the levels are enjoyable, but even with leaderboards it doesn't draw you for multiple playthroughs. [July 2010, p.105]
  6. It's a decent revival of an old title, but at 1200 MS points it's really not worth the price of admission.
  7. Rocket Knight comes back with good old school platform moments and nice graphics, but despite the intense rhythm, ends up being too short, and too expensive.

    Clunky controls. [July 2010, p.79]
  9. It's hard to know how many people are really going to care about the return of Rocket Knight. Climax has done a decent job of giving it a modern sheen, but while it's mildly entertaining and completely inoffensive, it's also forgettable.
  10. There are times when Rocket Knight shines and is reminiscent of the good ol’ days of Saturday morning cartoons. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s a shallow, one-off title that once it is completed, will fade from memory.

Has little reason to exist beyond nostalgia. [July 2010, p.121]

For all its competence, there's no real hook for anyone who doesn't remember the original Rocket Knight game. It appeals mainly to nostalgia for the way platformers used to be. Although it has a lovely next-gen presentation with the hi-res, 3D graphics engine, this is very much two-or-three-gens-ago gameplay.

Updates are tricky; they need to be handled with the utmost love and dedication. We're not suggesting Rocket Knight hasn't been, but whatever made its ancestor appealing isn't as appreciable here. [July 2010, p.118]
  14. But once those colourful environments are replaced with dull mechanical labs, and the few rocket pack-related ideas presented in the first stage are reused ad infinitum, any initial enthusiasm is dispelled quickly.

    Good yet disappointing

Rocket Knight is a very creative platformer that has a very interesting mechanic. You literally have a rocket strapped to your back and this creates very fun opportunities for platforming. It plays and feels like a retro game, especially if you play it on an 8bitdo controller. There are a couple of flaws though, the final level felt like it had a cheap difficulty. There’s this section where you’ll have to rocket boost yourself between two walls that would crush you and grab onto a ledge so you could progress, but I wasn’t able to figure out a consistent way to grab onto it. Took me a total of 15 minutes to figure that one out, kinda. Second in that level there’s this puzzle where you’ll have to push timed switches for platforms to appear. I felt that especially the last set of platforms was difficult to reach due to me regularly not hitting all the switches or just straight up fall into the previous segment. Also, the final boss is a real let down. The boss before that was really difficult (and a bit cheap), where as with the final boss I just needed one life to figure out its pattern. To top it all off, the game is incredibly short, if you regularly play platformers you should be able to knock this one out within roughly 2 to 3 hours.

I’ll recommend this when it’s on sale. I bought it for 5 bucks and it certainly was worth it, but I’m also really glad I didn’t pay one penny more.

Konami R.I.P.
