If you have played borderlands or fallout and are expecting an rpg with story and compelling characters, i probably would NOT recommend rage, because you will be disapointed with the forgettable story and somewhat forgettable characters, but if you are a fan of id software games, or if you enjoyed doom 2016 or wolfenstein the new order, i wholeheartedly recommend rage, because the gameplay and shooting is what makes this game worth it, i must have played and completed it several times over the years and it never gets old, it may not be the fallout killer it wanted to be, but rage is a game that i would recommend to any fps game fan,

So far so good? Gameplay 4/10. Why You ask? Its just plain boring. If i want to drive - i launch burnout/need for speed/forza/gran t./wipeout/motorstorm etc. - all these games does it waaayy better. If i want to shoot... shooting in this game is quite ok, but nothing to write home about. Repetitive, after a year You dont remember one good thing about it.

Terrible game. There's nothing to like here, and so much that's annoying. People who say they like this game are overlooking A LOT of flaws. So let's run through some. Game comes on 3 discs- trust me there's less content than many 1 disc games this is an optimization problem. If Fallout comes on one disc, so can this.

Lots of user interface issues, buttons feel very "sticky" so when you tab RB to switch weapons it usually brings up the quick-switch menu (hold RB) for a split second and takes a while to register that you meant a tap, meaning weapon changes are slow. I've often found myself tapping RB because I know I need the next weapon, and since it brings up the menu anyway, if I touch my stick accidentally at the same time during a heated fight all of a sudden I have a random weapon or ammo type I didn't ask for. WHY. It's just a sloppy interface.

What else is slow? Conversations. Every NPC in the entire world is doing somewhere else when you walk up. You run up, put your cursor on them, but you can't talk yet. They start an animation like turning around, then they have some terrible dialog in a fake accent, and then you can finally hit A to talk to them. Oh but wait- hitting A actually initiated more recorded dialog, you need to wait through one or two of those, and THEN you can finally get your mission. Why? This is terrible, horrible, no-good game design. They're saying some nonsense when you walk up, THEN you have to ask them for more dialog, and THEN you have to interact again to get a quest. Just have them keep freaking talking, the false interaction is like the "Press F to pay respects" meme.

What else is terrible? So your character gets binoculars (actually a monocular, oh how original). Anytime you're not holding a scoped weapon, hold LT to bring up the monocular. Okay great, I can zoom in now. EXCEPT, while you're zoomed in, you can still fire your pistol. So your character puts a telescope up to their left eye, and magically somehow they can now shoot their pistol super accurately. That's completely stupid. You actually see the animation where the character puts the telescope up to one eye and shoots with the other- imagine someone walking around doing that, it's ridiculous!

Think I'm done? Animations. Enemies are usually doing crazy animations like running along walls or rolling or holding their wounds. That seems cool at first glance- until you realize they didn't fix the hitboxes. So if you try to punch an enemy while they're in the middle of an animation, you might even see blood spatter on your screen indicating a hit, but the enemy will be unharmed because they either had an invincibility frame or their hitbox was in a different spot I can't tell. Lots of enemies are shorter than you and they're constantly rolling, so if you have to shoot or punch them you'll tend to need to aim down to get their hitbox- except this game obviously wants you to score a lot of headshots, so you need to aim up to kill things quickly most of the rest of the time. But you aim up for headshots, and you're in a territory where you line up a great shot on an enemy and all of a sudden they have an antigravity animation where they start sticking to walls and they're totally gone from your scope. The developers needed to pick a focus- if enemies are going to be super mobile, you need some assault rifles and chainguns to spray flack at them. Instead, you start with shotguns and snipers so that if an enemy goes into an animation they move out from under your reticle and you miss. It's schizophrenic, in a bad way. Borderlands did a much better job, your character was a lot more mobile and you got a lot more high-ammo weapons so you could fight agile enemies toe-to-toe. Here I'm just fighting with my controller setup- I need lots of X sensitivity to turn around fast to hit rolling enemies, but I need to hit them with a headshot weapon, which needs lower sensitivity. What to do? Oh and enemies constantly do long death animations, and they still soak up bullets as they die, meaning you waste ammo until you pass the magic window when that stops. Thanks game.

So it's a mess. I haven't even talked about the story (there mostly isn't one especially for many hours into the beginning). I haven't really gone into the voice acting (lots of celebrities doing accents so terrible people told me to mute the TV). I haven't really gone into the "homage" factor (the game has id company logos and Fallout bobbleheads, it's less paying tribute, more straight up borrowing).

It's just an overall mediocre experience at best, not worth your time. For any good points, of which I'm having trouble finding any, there are many more terrible points to outweigh it. Did I mention vehicles? You hit the gas, they make one noise. You release the gas, they make a different one. Pulse the trigger and they make a godawful racket of rrr-EEE-rrr-EEE-rrr-EEE. ENGINES DO NOT WORK THAT WAY. Baffling game, terrible sloppy design. Do not play.

My favorite are the the wing-dings (boomerangs with razor sharp blades perfect for beheading). The vehicle combat and racing feels awkward at first, buy ends up being fun reminsent of my Twisted Metal days.

However, if you play through the entire game, nothing is fleshed out. The RPG elements are pretty shallow and consists of crafting about 16 different items, and finding said items in the world. Thats it. Weapon customization is also lacking with just a few mods which cant be removed. Enemy AI is great, but not varied. Youll be fighting the same enemies over and over just dressed and armed differently. Maybe 5 main types?

The "open world" is really just a series of intersecting roads which cannot be strayed from, connecting towns and levels. And the levels are very much a corridor shooter.

However, the worst offense is the story. The premise is fine, but the lack of lore, character development, meaningful dialogue really hurts this game. It has such a rich environment that serves little purpose other than a place to shoot stuff. In this regard, id should have stuck with what theyre best at and just delivered a hardcore action fps dropping the open world "rpg" part. They could then have focused on more weapons (although there is enough), enemy variety, level design, and BOSS BATTLES! Bc basically youre just driving the same toads over and over to the next level. Its not open ended.

Anyway, if fallout is too much for you, or too RPG like and not enough firsf person boom boom. This might be just your game.

The first part of the game, in my opinion 8 and over, it is very well made and structured, but the second part (the part that is on disk 2 ), I found it too fast, dispersed and with a final TERRIBLE, that leaves you speechless, and not for beauty or ugliness, but for the way it comes.

Rage was a major disappointment. It starts off promisingly as essentially Fallout 3 but with racing and therefore even closer to the Mad Max films. Sounds awesome, right? The voice acting is outstanding as well, with John Goodman playing one of the key roles.

But Rage just never sucked me in like the Fallout games did. Partly it was because the game has no leveling up system, so there's little sense of progress or accomplishment as you play it. Partly it was because the missions were mostly standard kill or fetch quests, without much thought or imagination. Partly it was because the storyline was blah. Partly it was because of the game forces you to do various road race mini-games as part of quests rather than allowing other ways to advance. I'm not good at driving games in the first place and the controls for this one were hard as hell to learn so I was forced to replay the races endlessly before I finally got through them.

The final straw though was when I started one mission, fought through an extremely tough group of bad guys to get to the destination only for a screen to pop up and inform me that I now had to buy downloadable content in order to progress. I had purchased a three-disc "Game of the Year" version so I had naively assumed that all that stuff had been included. Not so, apparently.

Well, screw it, I thought. Why bother for a game that become a chore to play?

As a fun and frenetic FPS, Rage delivers in spades. That the same can't be said for the game's story is a real shame. It's especially disappointing as Rage feels like it's building to a strong crescendo, before fizzling out like a damp firework. Rage veers incredibly close to greatness then, but ultimately fails to win itself a cigar.
