Although, don't buy Xbox 360 version if you have PS3 Microsoft console version have worse looking cut scenes than PS 3 version. In terms of gameplay they are the same. 60 FPS of instant action!

I sense Solid Snake faboyism on the Critics review. This game like almost all Platinum Games (Looking at you Anarchy Reigns) is a breathe of fresh air. The graphics are stunning with 60-40 fps. The only thing I hate about this game is the compressed cutscene. If parrying is a problem then you lack skill to play the game (lol skillz...).

The boss fights are extremely well designed, especially in the sound department, as the music changes depending on how deep into the fight you are. I never felt out of control with Raiden, which was one of my concerns, as a lot of games like to grab you into an animation and you feel helpless. The fast paced gameplay mixes really nicely with the "can cut anything" sword that Raiden possesses, allowing you to slice and dice everything from humanoid cyborgs, to mechs, to about half of the environmental props in a particular level.

Metal Gear Solid fans will notice some of the series' implanted design you can hide under a cardboard box or a barrel to try and sneak up on enemies if you'd rather one-hit-kill them stealthily, or you can go in guns blazing true to the Metal Gear franchise in that respect.

Again, I stress that this normally -is not- my type of game, but I'm just blown away by the sheer quality and dedication that Platinum games put into the title. Boss fights may leave you clapping.

To start of, Rising offers a unique mechanism: Blade Mode, you slow down time to slice enemies like a hot knife through butter; the story is fairly simple and can be summed up as a revenge story, hence the name. The graphics are decent for seventh generation consoles plus PC and the game play is very basic and easy to get use to. If there's one thing I rate this game highly for, it's the music; catchy and fitting to the whole genre. This game is my most favourite for the series but the Phantom Pain will replace it for many obvious reasons; I rate this game a 10/10.

i loved the call backs to the other games, from boris with the ‘kept you waiting’, rose being mentioned (rose is still the worst character in the franchise though) and solidus also being mentioned by nanomachines, son. the first proper boss (mistral) was the easiest boss i’ve ever done in my life, even on normal difficulty, which was a really stupid thing to do considering i had never played the game before. this is where a problem of mine is with this game: easy difficulty is too easy. sounds ridiculous, but the difference between normal mode and easy is insane. i started on normal difficulty, and was doing fine until it took me 4 hours to beat the bladewolf fight, but then beat the mistral fight in one go. on easy, i beat the fight in two goes because i forgot the nanopaste existed. that took me 8 minutes. on normal difficulty, i got stuck on the monsoon fight. i **** you not i could not beat this, so i decided to start the game again, but on easy. i finished the entire game in 3 hours. it took me less time to finish the entire game on easy than it did to beat a boss on normal. which is why i say it’s too easy. i don’t know if easy mode was intended for people who had never played a video game before, but the difference between the two modes is ridiculous. in my opinion i think there should’ve been more difficulties like in the earlier games. this was really my only “issue” with the game.

Light stealth elements also allow the game to feel a bit more at home with the title of Metal Gear on the cover and add a surprising amount of depth. If there's one thing that holds this game back from being flawless, though, it's the pacing of the story. With the exception of the final boss battles, the gameplay's pacing is every bit as flawless as the action, as a new mechanic is added into the experience every chapter and enemies become increasingly stronger throughout, both enemies seen early game and new enemies added to the mix, but the storytelling is insanely brief. It really strings you along and expects you to buy what's happening, and it's really hard to when Platinum took very few opportunities to flesh out moments of characterization and plot progression. It's a real shame that this is the case, as the presentation of the game is absolutely phenomenal. Irritating story pacing aside, though, this is arguably the greatest Action game ever made, and it's certainly given Platinum's Bayonetta and Vanquish a run for their money. All in all, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a stellar hack-and-slash roller coaster ride that will have you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll. It's more than worthy for Raiden's first playable role as a cyborg and feels every bit as satisfying to play as watching him fight in Metal Gear Solid 4 did. Ignore it at your own cost. Expand

This is the greatest fetus transplant ever: a game KojiPro could never make, handed over to Platinum Games, who can only make this kind of game. Even though previous MGS titles had VR missions as ninjas, they were severely constrained by their engines. Platinum's engine, explicitly for hack 'n slash gives the proper cyborg ninja experience. The story is pretty good and properly topical (like MGS1 or MGS3) main focus being Raiden's personal crusade to stop a defence contractor from turning children into cyborg soldiers, and stimulating the war economy by framing Pakistan for an attempt to assinate the US president (leading to one of the most epic Metal Gear battles ever). The biggest subplot is Raiden's alter ego from his days as child soldier "Jack the Ripper". This gives the player an equivalent to God of War's rage mode. All together, this is the same universe Metal Gear fans know and love but with a new, fresh vector into it they didn't even though they would love. Expand

I expected nothing less than an amazing action game from the people that brought me Bayonetta. I was right to assume this. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is an awesome action game, it might just be one of the best ones out there. The combat is fluid and fast, and the action never stops. Great game, worth every cent.

I'll admit my expectations were low (not that Platinum Games can't deliver, because they have great games), especially since this game seemed to be lost in development limbo for the longest time, but it sure was worth it! Hack n Slash at its best in this Metal Gear spin-off. (Well if you can call it that) Great visuals, over the top action and an immense amount of satisfaction from slaying all those enemies. Personally I had problems with this last boss, when he throws objects and you have to enter zandatsu mode, the impression he gives me is that it is poorly implemented.
Despite these issues, I think it is quite replayable and I consider it a good spin off.

He was supposed to get this meaningful development that was the whole Jack the Ripper scene (that would have been even more meaningful if he had actually killed that one boy). But at the end, he just ended up doing what he was going to do anyway, so that whole sequence was kind of pointless. The camera is also a bit buggy and all those parts you slice around really mess up your vision of your surroundings sometimes. But overall, great game. Would strongly recommend to those who like a good narrative and generally just cool stuff. But i also couldn't just walk away without talking about that AMAZING soundtrack. Released alongside was the soundtrack, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "It Has To Be This Way", a song so Metal, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the crazy drums and the guitar solo, it's also a personal statement about the similarities of the hero and villain.

All I will say is my money went towards Platinum Games and this excellent game, while I and many many others didn't and will never spend a penny towards that unholy mess Capcom threw up! MGR greatest assets are it's variety in gameplay ie stealthy kills or all out war, it's excellent boss battles (bar one chapter) and lastly the parry system. As a Soul Calibur fan, this was an excellent addition where genuine skill and timing is needed to excel, skill which is sadly absent in other *cough* hash and slash titles. Though two marks were deducted due to the following: Regardless of re-playability the 7 hours or so it takes to finish isn't long enough, though with the revised development time that would of been forgiven if the camera wasn't so bad. Ahh the memories of DMC1 and never seeing where the boss Nightmare attached you from, it's that bad on MGR especially when you have to face an opponent to parry only to get a several hit combo unleashed on poor Raiden. Despite these issues MGR and PG have shown the gaming world that the Orient do hash and slash best, maybe now others will learn that lesson too! Expand

My favourite part about this game was the ability to play as Gray Fox, my favourite character from MGS1. They play it a little differently where instead of getting a code to unlock him and just playing him from the get-go, you redeem your code and have to fight for in-game currency to unlock his armour and then his sword, which I thought was a really good touch to give you some extra motivation to slash those foes up! I got this game WAY late, and when i say late I mean over a year after it was released, but I figure I will put my two cents review in.

Ive always been a fan of the MG and MGS series. They were apart of the stealth genre, but somehow felt different then say Splinter Cell. Maybe the more unrealistic story? I'm not sure. But regardless i was a fan ever since i played MGS 1 and had to go back and replay MG and MG 2. Now I've never owned a PSP or PS3, went the route of Xbox 360 so the story was a bit hazy for me up until recently but live I've already said I enjoy the series.

Now onto MGR: R. This game is a complete spin off of the original MGS series. Follows Raiden now a cyborg ninja who has his own path to follow aside that from what he has been leading in the MGS story with Snake. It takes a VERY few things from the original MGS series, and i think this is done perfectly. It is a spinoff series of course so the genre and style can be its own, and it is. Even compared to other hack and slash games, its unique in its own right.

    What this game does right.
The music, i felt this soundtrack was amazing. Every boss encounter has its own song and it gets you into the fight. The first time you fight a boss and go to block a giant sword and the song changes, it felt awesome. It really felt like you could take on the whole world. That is until you meet Sam and he cuts your arm off.

The blade mode is very unique. You to into a bullet time and stand still where now your analog stick controls the movement of your sword. You can also use the light and heavy attack buttons to slash vertically and horizontally. During your blade time you can also pull the cyber spines out of your enemies to heal yourself and your BM meter.

To finish off a boss you go into a blade mode bullet time and slice them to bits, even though they can talk to you after the fight for a moment?... Regardless it is cool.

As the game progresses you get points you can spend on additional weapons, more health and different techniques.

As a hack and slash game, it throws away the traditional dodge for a block mechanic which in most cases can block all incoming damage and stagger your enemy for a second to counter attack. Unfortunately some bosses will do mitigated damage though the block so you need to either make sure you carry rations or end the fight quickly.

Raiden's new look is awesome, and playing as him is really fun.

Now some of the issues with the game.
Like before I said the have a block mechanic in this game. You push the analog stick in the direction you are about to be attacked and press the light attack button to block. Sounds simple enough right? Its too simple. The window where you can actually perform a block is HUGE. Its a good 2 seconds before the attacks are performed you can go into the blocked stance. For the most part you should be able to block every attack, and for whatever you cant, you can steal enemies cyborg spines to heal to full. Yes full. Even if you're at 1% health you will go to full health and full BM.

Some of the boss fights felt a bit buggy, but I watched videos on them as well and they didn't seem to do the same thing they did when i fought them so I'm not really sure about that. It could be differences in the ports from PS3 to Xbox 360.

The combat feels a bit shallow, for the most part you'll find that you are hitting the light attack button due to the fact that it does damage and blocks at the same time, you'll end up taking more damage at the cost of very little damage increase if you use the heavy attack more often.

This is a modern hack and slash game, so of course there is a rating system at the end of every level, but it seems to really on factor in combos and times. Damage taken or deaths do not weight at all on the score, which is strange because this is from the same devs as Bayonetta who penalized you quite a bit for items used, deaths and damage taken.

Another thing is your main weapon can never be changed, only upgraded which I guess is okay but some variety would be nice. Once you kill a boss their weapon becomes available for purchase from the store, unlike most games who would provide it for you for a reward for killing said boss, but they are usually pretty cheap to buy (though can get expensive to upgrade so pick one and stick with it)

Within the actual game there are VR mission unlockables, but no health or weapon unlocks which is also strange but it doesn't necessarily take anything away from the game expect for maybe some replay value.

Overall its an amazing entry to the MG series. I love hack and slash/action games and I also really like the MG franchise, this game gives me a good medium for both. The combat is a bit lacked to others in the same genre and from the same devs, and the blocking mechanic could be tightened up a bit to make it more challenging, but its a great game in its own light and also a great game for people trying to play a good hack and slash game. 8/10

I think that MGR should've used one of shoulder buttons for parrying. It can be rather annoying trying to parry because sometimes you will input a dash attack and would cause you to take major damage from an attack. And overall MGR does a poor job explaining to the player it's mechanics, but once figured out the mechanics aren't hard to grasp. I still think MGR is the best spinoff in the series and I believe this game deserves a sequel. As a longtime fan of the MGS series it was good to see a continuation to Raiden's story. I think this is a game both MGS and Platinum fans would appreciate.

Blade mode is cumbersome and hard to use. And the responsiveness of the action sequences needs a patch or two. Other than the problems mentioned. Its a good game overall.

This game is a great game. The combat is fun,but can be repetitive and the game has to many quick-time events. The soundtrack is great, with some interesting environments (with a somewhat frustrating camera). I would recommend this for fans of Metal Gear and beat 'um up games.

I wish I could say the game was perfect, but there are many issues with it which I found to be disappointing. The resolutions which you can select are severely limited. I have a 1080p monitor so it doesn't bother me as much but anyone with a older screen will have issues. The game has constant frame rate drops. I have a gtx 770oc, with a i5 chip and 8gb of RAM. I can max out every game at the moment including battlefield 4 without any issues, so I should not be getting frame rate issues when my rig can handle it. I experienced massive frame rate drops in the first boss fight and in open areas. Next is the textures. They look hideous. I'm sure this graphical fidelity is acceptable for consoles at the time since they're old hardware but this is not acceptable for for PC, especially when this is a AAA title. The next issue I have with the game is the cost. This game costs £19.99 at the moment on steam. This isn't good enough for a title which was released a year ago. I would be more inclined to recommend this game if this cost less than £15 so I would say wait for the steam sales. The final issue I'd like to bring up, is the fact that theres no dodging, only parrying. I know this is a personal preference but honestly, I would have liked the option to have BOTH.

But overall despite these issues the game is very enjoyable. If I were to compare this with the other spectacle fighters in this genre, more specifically DMC, I found this to be more enjoyable and satisfying. The voice acting is awful but thats expected in a metal gear solid game but the game doesn't take itself seriously, so that is passable. You can string together combos perfectly, but I would recommend a controller if you have one. Playing with mouse and keyboard isn't bad but weapon swapping is awkward.

So overall, 7/10, would have been perfect if they sorted out the graphic menu, frame rate issues, and added the ability to dodge and not just parry attacks. In all honestly, wait for the steam sales because spending £19.99 on a year old game without multiplayer, or any DLCs or any graphical improvements is robbery in my opinion.

The graphics are impressive, and the framerate only drops occasionally.

The sound design is average, but the heavy metal soundtrack suits the game perfectly, with beats timing perfectly to the on-screen action and it just pumps you up!

Overall,Metal Gear Rising is a solid hack and slash held back from greatness by it's short length and a major exploit.

The boss fights in Rising are also amazing, having Raiden up against a hulking cyborg with meat cleavers to a ninja cyborg who can separate his body parts to dodge Raidens blade. The game suffers from some problems though: first of all, the story is boring, and undoes everything that was established in the end of Guns Of The Patriots. second of all, the camera can be a real annoyance sometimes, ruining immersive moments. apart from that, Rising is a decent game that i would only recommend to Metal Gear Solid fans who want something to play while waiting for Ground Zeroes, which drops in 2014. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, after reading many reviews and watching a few let's plays of the first mission, I became dead set on buying this game. As a matter of fact, I rushed to my local game store and bought it the very next day.

I've always been a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, and, in particular, I enjoyed MGS2. I was one of the (apparent) few who enjoyed playing as Raiden and, to this day, it is one of my favorite games of all time.

My first impressions of the game were great. I had a lot of brainless fun with fluent controls, great animations and, above all, a bad-ass soundtrack. Half the reason why I liked the game (and that it is rated above 5 by me) is the way the music fits so well in the game, getting more and more epic as the fights progress.

This didn't remain the same for the whole game.

While the music is constantly awesome, and the graphics are great, I find the experience to be... hollow. Combat is repetitive, usually following the pattern of "XXYYXYXY ZANDETSU slash slash steal spine repeat". Zandetsu is fun, giving Raiden the power to cut and slice like an actual sword should, and I hope a mechanic similar to it will be in future games. Parrying is in the game, which I'm not really a big fan of. This is biased as I am a big fan of dodging, which is in the game as an unlock-able skill. However, that skill isn't as good as say, a dodge button. If you could press A to dodge in a direction instead, I think I'd have more fun with the combat. OH! There is stealth in the game, but it's poorly integrated. The game would be better with-out it.

The story is bland, which I'm normally fine with action games, but it's a Metal Gear game. I expect some beef and potatoes in the story. There are a few moral dilemmas in the game, and some great character development (I'm looking at you, Wolf). However, the story is weak, not really accomplishing much and not really feeling like a Metal Gear story. I like how Raiden acts in the game, but the lack of his wife and child appearing in the story (only briefly mentioned) is disappointing. Also there's codec conversations. The ones that happen in game are fine, and provide good exposition. The ones that you have to pause and watch are, for the most part, dumb. This is biased slightly, but I don't think they should had them in the game. It was fine in the Metal Gear Solid series because you were an undercover soldier, using tactics, espionage and communication to get through the game. In those games, it made sense to talk with people to get more information about the mission. In an action game as a cyborg ninja, it makes no sense to pause for story. I think it would've been amazing if these Codec things would casually play during combat sequences. imagine: Raiden talking with the Doktor in a calm, joking tone and the Doktor talking back while Raiden is ripping people to shreds. It would make the repetitive combat a bit more spicy.

Also, this might just be me, but I found all the boss fights lackluster, the only ones I enjoyed being the fight with METAL GEAR RAY IN THE FIRST MISSION (That has to be one of the greatest fights ever in a game), and the fight with Sundowner (which made great use of Zandetsu). Personally, all the other boss fights I found cool at first but, again, repetitive and boring in the long run. For example, Monsoon's fight was cool for the first 2 minutes, but after the fourth time he went off screen to throw tanks at me, I started getting bored of it. Similar issues with Sam's fight. The only great thing that I will mention (which I have mentioned before) is the music is amazing in these fights, and fits well to the action that happens on screen. Games of all genres should look at how music was integrated into this game and learn from it.

At time of writing, I've beaten the game twice. Once on easy and once on normal. I'm not the best gamer, OK? I got stuck on mission 2 on normal, so I completed the whole game on easy and went back to finish it on normal because I thought easy was.... well let's just say I thought the combat was flat out terrible after playing on easy. Playing on normal made combat better, but didn't stop it from becoming repetitive. Overall, through the 2 difficulties, I got a good 8 hours (give or take an hour or so) of entertainment, which is fine. I do wish I rented the game instead of buying it, but whatever. Who rents games nowadays anyway? There are many people who enjoy this game, and I think that they have every right to enjoy it. It is a fine game, but I'm not overly impressed with it. 6/10

I couldn't help but feel that the game is just a mash of some over games of similar genre. The extremely "over the top" combat and general sword action, extensive cut scenes and pauses and (to my opinion), a stale story, makes this game hard to take seriously. Not to mention the sticky controls and awful cameras. I thought games were past this. The number of times I tried to pan the camera around to see what I was fighting only to have it freak out is stupid. Even most of the enemies are unimaginative. Most enemies just feel like copies from other games and then the rest are just unnecessary, way over thought enemies that just hardly fit in. It appears that the game main attraction is the sword mechanics and the "blade" mode. All the trailers seem to focus primarily on this feature. Allowing players to go crazy. This gets boring 5 minutes into the game. Sure, It's fun to try slice that perfect watermelon like in the trailer, It's fun to slice a car in half, It's funny to slice the supports on a bridge to have it collapse but in the end its just not needed. Give a kid a toy and he'll just play with the box. An accurate statement for this game. Overall, a over hyped, lazy game that has it's moments but I just cannot take seriously. Expand

MGR is an extremely frustrating game with a ton of potential it doesn't realize.

The swordplay at its heart is slick and engaging and the use of it's "blade mode" to hack up enemies in order to receive a health boost is great fun to begin with. However the enemies the game throws at you are incredibly samey and frankly this game is far too short to justify it being sold as a full game.

However the enemies the game throws at you are incredibly samey and frankly this game is far too short to justify it being sold as a full game. There are only 7 "cases" and frankly case 5 is maybe 10 minutes long and just has some standard enemies then its over. I literally laughed when I realized that was all there was to the level. The next level, again, is just a boss battle and then you're on the final level. My first time I finished this in 8 hours. That is FAR too short for what is considered a full game. FPS can get away with that because they lean on multiplayer; this just has the story and some "VR" missions as filler. It's far too short.

It falls off the side of a cliff in quality by the halfway point. Halfway through case 4 they have you fight the two previous bosses again, back to back and THEN throw you into a third boss fight by which point you'll likely have next to no healing items left. I then got stuck for much longer than I had to because I had to fight this boss basically perfectly to progress. Also by this point they are absolutely MOBBING you with enemies to the point where its only the sheer number of them coming at you that provides the difficulty.

My biggest gripe with the gameplay is that it is very cheap and in boss battles incredibly cheap. Your typical grunts will be dispatched very easily but basically anything above that level will have an un-parryable grab move or a stun move that forces you to do a "wiggle the sticks" QTE to escape. This gets very old, very fast. Boss battles could have been so much more but again they fall down because they don't feel challenging, they feel cheap. There's a boss that smokes out the entire screen then leaps at you from a variety of angles, if you don't parry each attack (and there are many) you're gonna get your health knocked down by a good 10 or 15 percent. There's a boss that has a shield that is inexplicably explosive (yet doesn't hurt HIM) and you have to use the blade mode to slice in a certain direction to cut parts of his shield off. If you're a pixel out of line with the sensitive to mode slice mechanic you don't damage him but yourself. This is all whilst a helicopter is firing missiles at you from outside the arena, as if the above weren't bad enough. Yet another boss hits you so fast and so randomly that parrying him is basically a fools errand of you just plain hoping that you guess right. If you do guess right and get him down low on health then thats when the CPU just decides you aren't allowed to win and will launch repeated stun locking attacks to throw your health down. I'm a fan of difficulty. I'm a huge fan of Dark Souls. I don't mind a game whupping me until I learn it well enough to beat it and that can be an immensely satisfying game design choice. These bosses aren't that, they just feel cheap and overpowered.

The story is monotonous and hammy. They force this whole "Raiden feels bad about killing all these guys really" thing on you about 3 cases in and then pretty much immediately forget about all that, have him go super-saiyan and then slaughter countless more people. The codec NPCs are so hollow that I felt zero urge to communicate with them more than I needed to. In fact the writing in the many cutscenes was so weak I often found myself checking my phone during them. The story is so all over the place and convoluted that honestly at points I forgot why it was that I was fighting my way up a skyscraper full of androids in the first place. Somebody else on here mentioned in a review, you go all over the world but it's always sort of poorly explained as to why you are. They make odd narrative choices. Raiden falls out of a helicopter and a character acts as though he's going to definitely die from the fall. Then the next mission starts and he's just in a crater, totally fine. They never bring it up again. They must've known he could survive stuff like that.

It's frustrating because there was a ton of potential here for a brilliant game. It's beginning is fast paced, the enemies haven't gotten cheap yet, the locales look great and it's even quite funny. Then halfway through it just falls off a cliff in quality harder than I've experienced in any game for a quite a while.

And god yes, the camera is horrendous. Given that parrys are direction dependent, it's not a good thing you need to be constantly fiddling with the camera to see what is going on. It absolutely cannot keep up with the action on screen and knocks this down at least another point for me.

If you can get this cheap it's worth a shot, but don't expect the world. It's good points are overshadowed by the cheapness of its design, its poor story, terrible camera and its severe lack of story length

Ultimately Platinum has managed to deliver on the vision that Kojima first announced back in 2009, and it's a roller coaster ride from start to end. The gameplay is the forefront of importance for the genre and it’s there that they’ve certainly managed to deliver.
