Honestly the characters feel a little like metal gear with the way some of the bad guys act and the comical dialogue it makes for an enjoyable watch. The cutscenes in this game were awesome for the time they came out and are great to watch. The gun play is and grappling mechanic are fun and straight forward, the levels also use the mechanics to their fullest rewarding players who like to explore. The freezing mechanic was really interesting and was a cool way to add tension in the environment while fighting for your life. The different mechs and their mechanics add even more fun diversity to the game, and they are really cool. Some of the boss fights can be slightly annoying and seem unfair but I find most of them unique and really fun. This game is not perfect and can be difficult because it doesn't hold the players hand, but it was ahead of its time in the ideas it brought to the table and is worth one playthrough. Expand

It's not bad but It's also not great. It does have a good story but it does get repetitive and it doesn't hold my interest for too long. Played it once and never played it again.

I decided to give this oldie a try in 2022... and I can't even begin to fathom how someone could've ever thought this game was even acceptable, in any point of videogaming history. The gameplay is absolute, utter rubbish. Controls are defective, slow and unresponsive. Framerate is about 4 FPS whenever there's more than two characters on screen. Simply ridiculous.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is a game that was founded on horrendous ideas, making it a candidate for the worst third person shooter ever made.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is a game that was founded on horrendous ideas, making it a candidate for the worst third person shooter ever made.

"B-b-but muh grafix & story!" some of you may utter in a shocked reply. Yes, pretty good graphics (even by modern standards) are a surprising factor in this game, and the story is rather decent, the rest of the game is so mind-bendingly awful these factors will take a backseat to what is really going on. Let's start off with the controls, the biggest sin committed by this atrocity. If you've played 3PS games on the Xbox 360 before, there are a few controls you should expect to see. X to reload, RT to shoot, LT to aim, pretty basic stuff here. Lost Planet tosses that formula out the window with its ridiculous controls, RT to shoot being the only basic one that remains. X to rappel, OK, can deal with that. A to jump? Sure, why not. Up on the D-Pad to aim? Disgusting. Clicking the right stick to reload? Ludicrous. From the moment you start the first level, you'll realize that the controls are awkward and clunky. I'm in 4 playthroughs deep, and it doesn't ever feel right.

Now, let's get even more basic. The mechanics of the game itself. You technically have 2 health bars while playing, one if the standard LIFE bar that many games have, but the other is pretty exclusive to the Lost Planet series, T-ENG. T-ENG is short for Thermal Energy, and is what you need to survive on a frozen planet. Cool concept on paper, with the worst execution I've seen in video games. You will lose T-ENG by doing ANYTHING. Scratch that, you can lose T-ENG by doing NOTHING. Need to reload? Shoot? Run? Jump? Dodge? Grapple? Throw grenades? Crouch? Stand still and do absolutely nothing? All of the above cost T-ENG, the rate at which you lose it depending on the difficulty you're suffering through. Regaining T-ENG comes from either killing enemies, human, Akrid, or VS, or destroying a piece of the environment such as an explosive barrel or car. All of which involve moving...shooting...reloading...See where I'm going with this?

When your T-ENG hits 0, you will slowly lose health, be unable to regenerate health, be unable to fire T-ENG based weapons, and be locked out of using a VS. Hit a checkpoint with no T-ENG? The game will generously [/sarcasm] give you 1000 T-ENG to start with. On Extreme, that might be enough to keep you alive for 3 or 4 minutes. T-ENG dictates the entire game, and hitting a bad checkpoint with not enough of it could really ruin your day.

So, what else does this game have to offer? Mech shooting. That's right, for the cost of a T-ENG number that drops like a lead ball, you can pilot and use a mech with big guns! At least until it gets destroyed within minutes after an enemy sees you. That brings me to my next point, the awful combat system. This game could have gotten away with being called "Knock Down Simulator 2K6" and no one would have second guessed it. Every enemy attack has a strong possibility of knocking you down and doing massive damage. While you're knocked down and healing, your T-ENG drains much more rapidly as you struggle to stand and heal, only to be hit by the enemy again, either repeating the knockdown process or outright killing you. This will occur on foot, in VS, on every level, against every enemy. Sometimes, you'll be completely helpless and unable to stop the impending death after a knockdown. Other times, you'll escape with such little T-ENG that you're merely prolonging life by a few minutes at most.

The mechs don't feel good to control, feeling more like piloting a WWII era tank rather than a future giant robot made to kill insect monsters. Using a VS is very sluggish, and usually drain T-ENG faster than you can replenish it in combat. The game is also short, sporting 11 levels, 3 of which are under 10 minutes and others of which are re-treads of previous levels. There's also no replayability, since all that leads to is more Lost Planet.

What's the overall verdict? The death sentence. This game is wholly unpleasant to play from start to finish, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's amazing that Lost Planet 2 turned out to be a rather great game, since it was built on the same shay foundation as this game. I'd say start there and avoid this one at all costs.

BioShock, The Last of Us, Deus Ex: Human Revolution!
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

This game starts with the fight with Green Eye, in my opinion the hardest boss in entire game (Akrid is their names) to defeat, you will be defeated with your dad etc. You will wake up 30 years later (as far as I can remember) with 3 guys and the battle is starting. I really liked the graphic design (let's remember that the game has been released in 2007), battles are OK, storyline is decent and that's why I'm giving it just 8. Expand

The mechs, weapons, maps, unique types of levels and being able to pull yourself up to any height basically with the rope-gun are awesome. I spent countless hours with my friends thinking of new ways to take on the maps, whether or not to use mechs, and always trying to get that new suit.

I like how it also showed how highly placed you were in the world and your country, that was pretty new to me in 2007. Maybe it is just nostalgia, but I remember certain maps and even times I played this game and that was about four years ago. The only problem I had with this game was that I always got put in Japanese servers so it got kinda of annoying when I couldn't understand my team mates.

The game is just annoying and frustrating. You spend sometimes 15 seconds straight lying on the ground because you get hit with yet another missile or grenade as soon as you finally get back to standing. The lack of any kind of sprint or speed increase just adds to the frustration of the game. This game is not challenging and hard in a fun way. It's hard because of you being on the ground constantly from explosions, from not being able to see anything for 5 seconds at a time because of ridiculous amounts of smoke covering the camera view. Thermal Energy is a neat concept and mechanic to the game, however it adds an unnecessary time limit to the game in my opinion. If you want a challenging game look elsewhere. This is not a fun game. To add to this your character is extremely weak, he topples over very easily after being hit, and will keep toppling over after each subsequent hit...over and over again. In practicality there are only three difficulty settings for this game: hard, very hard, extremely hard. For me the game became too frustrating and consequently too boring after while. There is a limit to everyone's patience and in this game "positive frustration", the kind that ignites your desire to succeed, may very well turn into a black hole...draining your desire to complete the game. The question is whether you regard this kind game design as the blueprint of how games should be, or as an archaic monstrosity best left in the past. Personally I think the game's difficulty hinders the enjoyment of what is otherwise a good storyline and setting. It takes away from the game what I think is much more important than mere technical skill. Expand

Positive Aspects: I really liked its premise (human survival on a science fiction ice world), the captivating environment (beautiful art and decent sound), and the time pressure (player has to constantly replenish thermal energy during game play or his character will die). Neutral Aspects: I was ambivalent about the shooter/mech components of this game. They were not bad, just not necessarily better than anything that has already come out. The game has a grappling hook which I thought looked pretty cool, however except for the mountain climbing tasks, its use during game play felt superfluous (i.e. a chore/novelty). More could have been done to bring out the fun platforming potential of this device. Negative Aspects: I disliked the game due to three main issues. Issue 1 - Main character control felt really slow and sluggish. Perhaps this was by design (to capture the fact that this was a cold environment). His constant need to pause after performing controller actions (i.e. jumping or grappling), slow foot speed, and slow panning rates made some tactical situations extremely frustrating - especially when against multiple opponents or opponents who could move fast. The game uses the left and right bumpers for quick 90 degree left/right panning, but it did not feel natural to use during play. Issue 2 - Camera angles and visual cues were occasionally very poor, especially during boss fights. In some cases the view was too low and narrow such that the main character was unable get a decent visual of his opponent. This issue is magnified since many of the enemies/monsters were huge in scale. Another problem was that some of the visual cues in these fights were not clear (i.e. weak spots of big bosses) and get hidden by excessive special effects (i.e. ice, webs, smoke). Although learning how to fight and defeat a boss is part of the joy in most games, the implementation in "Lost Planet" made it a pretty frustrating trial-and-error experience. Issue 3 - Horrible plot and character development. For most shooter/action games, this probably wouldn't be a major gripe, but "Lost Planet" devotes a lot of time to the story. There were long cut scenes throughout the game and they made less sense as time went on. Character relationships and plot twists were extremely contrived and filled with non-sequiturs. What bothered me most was that the two human sides of the main conflict basically wanted the same goal (pacification of the ice world) and that their differences could largely have been resolved with a little thinking and no fighting. But to make the bad guys who they are, they had to use a method that would wipe out innocent humans (add evil laugh) Expand

It's straight out of 1989, and that makes it either archaic or retro-cool comfortable. With Capcom's steady attention to polish and presentation, Lost Planet falls into the latter category more often than not. And even if it's familiar, it's definitely not repetitive. [Jan 2007, p.48]

Really, this is a game of strong, simple virtues: knockout action, beautiful character design, lovingly articulated models, crisp sound and overall polish. Every now and then it'll overstretch, at which point it falls. [Jan 2007, p.76]
  3. It does what it says on the tin, and delivers heart-pounding explosions, pant-wetting big alien monsters and hordes of minions to slay.
