This engine is good, and works well for the game. There are unforgettable moments of teamwork and cohesion which will stick in your mind. There are unbelievable moments when you will think "wow, this is AWESOME!". But considering all the other zombie mods out there, I believe Valve did a good job, but not a great one. They needed things such as barricadable areas, some environment destruction, that kind of thing. Because this was lacking, I give this a good rating, and recommend the game highly, but don't believe it is high enough to be regarded as a truly brilliant gem like games such as Fable, COD4, TF2 ect. this game is definitely worth buying, yet not worth 50 dollars. there are only 4 campaigns. although it definitely replayable, as it was meant to be. The AI director keeps it different, although it is overrated, as there will be instances in which the game seems repetitive. In short, this game is great and very fun, but not so much is it worth 50 buckaroos.

I'm glad I waited a while to pass final judgement on this game. I was sucked into the hype and the idea of mowing down zombies was all I needed to pick this up on release day. I fired it up and played through each single player campaign the first day as I have never seen the use of having a live membership. I sat there a bit replaying a level saying to myself "That's it?!" I fired it up and played through each single player campaign the first day as I have never seen the use of having a live membership. I sat there a bit replaying a level saying to myself "That's it?!" Short campaigns, minimal story, and a small selection of weapons. I had a month card laying around, popped in the code and jumped into a quick match. Entirely different game! The FPS mentality that is so ingrained was immediately tossed. Some moments are down right hilarious. Newer players looking for to run and gun taken down before anyone can get near them. Covering your team mates while they heal and reload. Yes the game can be simple and sometimes easy if played right, but one wrong move or a team mate lost at a desperate time can spell disaster for everyone. I love the director aspect that encourages searching every nook while penalizing you for taking the time to do so. Desperately searching for a health kit? Take too much time and the horde will be unleashed on you. Burn through the level and you will deal with less horde but more chances of running out of supplies at a critical moment. It is extremely well balanced. Yes the lack of weapons is frustrating at first but the deeper you look at them they are all different ways to play the game. I challenge everyone to get with a group of friends on "Dead Air" stick three friends on tail of the downed plane and one with the hunting rifle in the small storage area in the wall of the building. They attract the majority of the attention and leave you free to snipe any specials that may get the jump on them. They may drop a hundred infected, but you easily pop and protect them from 15 specials that could wreck everything. For all the hate the hunting rifle gets, it is hands down my favorite weapon in the game and deserving of way more love than its getting. Expand

Left 4 Dead is a good concept that relies heavily on playing with other people. If one does not have a bunch of friends or xbox live, they're in for a bad experience. While single player isn't bad it's not the most fun thing in the world. The fun is playing with others through the zombie infested campaigns. The only issue with the game is that there are 4 different scenarios.

The computer plays well with you. Your team mates heal you and protect you like you would expect. The fact that literally 50-100 zombies will come flying out at once unexpected it awesome. Tons of narrow places with zombies waiting. Some of them dont really bother you. In fact i went into a bedroom with a zombie just slamming her head against a wall???? Either way i just went up and owner her soul but still made me laugh. And the witch was a nice touch. (Just dont shine the light on her or its pretty much game over for you). I then played co op with a buddy. We put the difficutly one more up to the third hardest. And that was def hard. Not impossible but def a challenge. Just when you think you have a place under control think again. This game rarely lets you rest. And this is not a game that once you beat it your like "time to trade in". All of the naysayers on this board probably played it for an hour or so without trying it on either the higher difficulties, didn't play it with a friend or online, or didn't play the versus mode. It's a BLAST. Anyone who has played it with friends or a good team online will tell you that it is an amazing play experience.

I absolutely love this game. It's addictive, fun, and intense. The expert difficulty setting is extremely difficult and the random spawn of zombie hordes and bosses makes it a new situation every time. The multiplayer is great as well. The versus is the most fun I've had online in a while. I will say this about the lack of story, this is a zombie SURVIVAL game, not a STORY zombie game like Resident Evil. Your only goal is to survive, not to figure out why the world is infected or who could have done such an awful thing. It is purely about cooperating with your team and surviving the hordes of zombies that rush at you. For those who love fast paced shooters and multiplayer, this game is definitely for you. For those who crave a plot and story in their shooter, this game is probably not for you. Expand

ummm....well, I have no problem with somebody expressing their opinion, but I want to point out some misconceptions. There is plenty of ammo, seeing how the A.I. director throws some at your team when you are low, also it is unlimited when found so you can keep running back to an ammo pile until you've killed all of the zombies in an area. Next, if there were any more med packs, then the game wold get way too easy. When I played online my partners were great. You know why? I healed them a couple times and saved them another few. Everybody will get mad at you if you either don't help, or if you--for instance--have a medpack and over half health and decide not to heal your teammate who' s at about 10% health or less. As far as resident evil goes...this game doesn't rip it off. In RE the zombies are slow-moving diseased townspeople who use weapons and retain some human characteristics. In L4D the zombies are more like animals, moving extremely fast and attacking with their bare hands. Lastly there are 6 different types of infected in L4D with unique attacks and traits...so all the zombies aren't the same. I wouldn't get this for single player alone, it's worth it for the co-op and online. Expand

If the devs decided to try and mix in a story and whatnot, the point of L4D would be missed. The whole point of L4D is mindless fun, and it delivers. The game constantly changes the spots where you'll encounter minibosses, bosses, and mobs of zombies in the levels, which is a godsend, if you ask me. Even though there are only 20 levels in the whole game, the fact that the game spawns zombies in different places almost EVERY time you play through them greatly changes the experience every time. If you don't have XBL, i hope you have friends who still play System Link play, because the true soul found in L4D is when you're bashin zombies with 3 human buddies. Oh and as for the graphics? Next time you're mowing down zombies in a dark corridor, after you survive the wave, try and count all of the new details in your environment. Zombie limbs, blood and trash litter the world in L4D, and it's oddly satisfying. Everything about this game enhances the experience of a survival game, and it's not even close to being as scary as Bioshock [for the kids out there]. If i could, i would give this game a 9.99, for one reason only, and thats because [for me, anyways] the weapons seem a little unbalanced. I always stick with the shotgun anyways. It has Good graphics and Amazing Gameplay. I rate it 10 simply becuase It is soo much fun, especially with ya mates. Its fast Paced, Frantic and Surprising!. You will never know when the next wave of zombies will appear because its completely different every single time you play. Its Made by valve and they have a brilliant track record for there games.( counterstrike, Team fortress 2) Although the content is a little low, you have a lot of variety in game play to make up for it. Zombies and monsters will take u when u least expect it. When you think your safe think again because the AI is Sum of the best i have seen and will take you by storm. For example: All the zombies appeared to be cleared and it was at the end of the level and i was just going down sum stairs to collect a few items for the next stage, when all the sudden A horde of hundreds of Zombies appear out of no where when all my mates went with me and i got completely over run in seconds. I had to sound Help right away. Evan all my friends were having a hard time saving my ass. Unfortunately i didn't make it, So i recommend when you do play this Game Don't wonder off even if there is no zombies in site!(especially then) There is more to it than zombies as well you get Bloomers which are like Fat and Slow Zombies that can not run. It pukes loads of green stuff on u, which attracts hordes off zombies towards u while your blinded for a minute. It gets worse than that. There is Hunters which Pick off the weakest members or ones that are furthest away from the group etc. they are very fast can crawl on walls and while pounce on top of you and rip u to shredds with its deadly claws. they can kill u in less than 10 seconds with full Life bar! and There is others ones 2, the worst ones would be the Tank and the Witch. The Witch Kills u in one hit and will only attack when disturbed. The tank will not stop until u are completely dead, evan when ur lying on the floor. Takes Alot of Team effort to kill and is very fast and Strong. In the Full Game you are able to play as the monsters as well and control the Zombies yourself, plus those who like multilayer split screen for the xbox this has it to. So for those who dont have online this is Still worth it to buy, hell its still worth it just playing on ur own because even your team mates or bots in the game are awsome to play with, whether there computers or real people lol. The AI is that Damn good lol. There are many Levels to the game aswell in many different settings to suit your pleasure. Plus i herd that there will be a content update shortly after the release of the game which should include more levels weapons and so forth. So i wouldn't worry about content either to be honest. Anyway the story is pretty average but in for a game like it is it doesn't really need one. Its Just about having a Bloody good time with really friends really. I love it, everyone who's played with me Loves it, where all buying it. Its amazing on both platforms xbox360 and PC, ive played both versions. Neither stands out over the other, the only difference would be the graphics are better on PC but that Varies on how good ur PC is really. The xbox still look nice still tho. PC version is the cheapest one and will get all updates for free, while xbox is about a tenner more but offers 4 player split screen as an extra. I wouldnt always go for the cheaper option tho unless ur friends are getting it on PC and your PC can run it well. The easiet option would to get it for xbox. To Download PC Demo head over to : Google and type steam, click on the steam website and then download steam. then download left 4 dead Demo from Steam, its free. ( its all free) To download Left 4 Dead Demo on xbox360 head over to the xbox live marketplace. Its now up there. I hope you will enjoy it as much as i have :) Thank you for your Time! Expand

Left 4 Dead is a great game in many different aspects. It's one of those games that you and your friends will keep playing day in and day out. The game is scary and intense. Not sure why there is a 6.0 overall rating for the game? Something has to be wrong.

Best zombie game ever, enough said.
Nothing like gunning down a horde of charging zombies!

The people who voted this game down, voted before the game even came out. If you're judging it based on the demo, you're either retarded or naive.

Don't let the user scores scare you away from one of the best gaming experiences to date.

How many times can you watch the same movie in the same day, week, or month without getting bored? There's only 5 guns. 2 are just derivatives of each other (sub-machine gun => Assault Rifle, Pump Shotgun => Auto-Shotgun). Then you have 2 types of throwables. A Molotov cocktail and pipe-bomb. That's about it. Once you played through a campaign and you know "the story" and the "traps", you have little reason to play it again. It gets boring... fast. The game play is impeccable but there's just no staying power. Though, I'm at odds for the decision to low down your movement speed when being hit. That just doesn't feel right. But in the end, I'll pay for it again and again, just to sit in an old abandoned farm house, holding the line from hordes of zombies. Now, I know that the demo is great fun, that pirates have acquired the game with out giving anything to the producers so the least they can do is to leave them alone instead of destroying them further with a bad review... and that people I know who have played the Xbox version absolutely love it. Which leaves point 4. Really, what are you PS3 owners thinking? Are you really that intimidated by such a good game coming out on a rival console that you have to damage its success as much as possible? Do you really have nothing better to do with your time than to rate down a game with out even leaving a reason for it? People like you shouldn't even be called gamers. To take sides over such a trivial thing and to hurt those who haven't done anything to you... you should be ashamed of yourselves. I pity those PS3 owners who aren't to do with this. Please, just grow up. Or at least state your reason for voting it down. I'm expecting the following. 'Oh it's not coming out on PS3, THIS GAME SUCKS!' 'XBOX OWNERS ARE 2 STUIPD TO PLAY THIS!!!!' My first non-demo map I played led me into a farmhouse by a cornfield. The 4 of us moved to the second floor landing, where we were surrounded by doors. Suddenly we heard the screeching of zombie hordes coming from all around us, and for close to 20 seconds, that's all that happened, the sound just got louder and louder. Suddenly, one of the doors splintered and a gray, dead hands reached into the room with us, grabbing for living flesh. A second later, another door did the same thing, and they just kept coming. We all took a door and the stairs and started firing, chattering on the mic "Watch the door behind you!" "Holy shit there's a lot of them!" "Crotch down, CROTCH DOWN!" Finally the streams of zombies started to thin, and everyone took a breath. We made it.

Then the house shook...big time. That's when I fell in love with this game.

First of all....its fun, fast, and intensely entertaining...but its not perfect. Graphically, when compared to the likes of Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, CoD5 World at War, and Gears of War 2....Left 4 Dead falls very flat, sporting graphics you would expect to have seen 2 years ago. The game runs smooth enough....even when things are tense and there are seemingly hundreds of zombies on screen, but the bland textures in the backgrounds, often repeated zombie character models, and no frills design/style give it a very vanilla LOOK. Sound is excellent, whether it be the tense chatter amongst the characters, the screeching and howling of zombies running full sprint, or the lumbering sound of a "HULK"-like zombie crashing through....the sound keeps you on your tense and keeps your pulse-rate up. Gameplay consist of a straight-forward from point A to point B style, which isn't bad....but a little more open-endedness would have been more favorable and while there is a decent amount of ground to cover and the game rarely ever lets you sit in one spot too long....a larger world would have been nice even if it seems unnecessary. This game moves FAST...you character is seemingly running at full sprint at ALL TIMES and for a good reason....the zombies in this, when made aware of your presense, will stop at nothing to get to you....smashing through doors with their fist....spilling out of door-ways 10 to 20 at a time, just booking it at you....yes, this is a shoot/reload, shoot/reload, shoot/reload type a game where your objective is to survive the trip to your destination....its a bloody good time, and with friends....its priceless. Overall, im pleased with Left 4 Dead....this game SCREAMS multi-player over Live and that for sure will be its biggest redeeming factor because single player WILL get old rather quickly. If there is ever a game thats needs constant downloadable content....its this one, they should keep releasing new levels and scenarios for this game and i can assure you....it will be around for some time. While this dosen't earn my "HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION".....it IS RECOMMENDED.....mainly for the online-playing crowd. Expand

This game is great. I have always trusted Valve to make quality games, and this one does not dissappoint. There could have been a more in-depth story, but the great gameplay distracts from that.

Even though there's no defined story, the characters have their own personality. While in an elevater, the war-verteran Bill said, "If I start to turn, don't hesitate to shoot."

Francis, the biker, replyed, "If your beard starts to turn, can we shoot that?"
    "Shut up, Francis."

The gameplay is the big point of the game. The AI Director keeps you on your toes by throwing all sorts of twists and changes. While holding out on a rooftop waiting for a helicopter, our team had to holdout a 15 minute zombie swarm. playing on the second-highest difficulty, this was not an easy feat. Constant swarms of zombies combined with random boss zombies thrown in battered us to the point of death. When the helicopter arrived, I immidiatly jumped on. The AI was a bit too focused on killing the zombie horde and the Tank that had just come instead of hopping on the chopper. I had 17 health left, and the rest of my team died.

Although the AI is smarter than common bots, they are programmed to kill everything first, then complete an objective. It'd be more realistic if the AI would immidiatly run to the objective, rather than stand and shoot.

I haven't played online yet, But I'm sure it will be incredibly fun, and my experiences with the demo were.

And your statement that an "average household parent" wont want their kids to play this... well, almost everybody I know plays this, and their parents bought it for them, and I'm 14, and some of my friends are younger. Maybe you are just don't know what your child likes as most "average" parents can figure out, or you brainwashed your child to do only what you want him/her to, maybe only let him/her play educational games, not let him play outside, and only let him/her wear a certain clothing. Although the graphics are not up to par with such games as mirror's edge and gears of war 2, the gameplay is truely innovative. The team must work together to fight insurmountable odds and overcome the hordes of zombies. Yes, the Director is neat and creates a different hoard of zombies each time, but the bottom line is that the hoards of zombies are always the same hoard, just in different places. I would have much more preferred 5-7 zombies that walk slower, but you need precise firepower to eliminate. Boom headshot kind of stuff. Generally, you just go full-auto all the time. Gameplay is fantastic. The graphics are great. The sounds and music are terrifying. BUT BUT The most outstanding thing about this game is the "AI director" Now this is, to my knowledge, and ENTIRELY new concept in the world of gaming. Basically, the game watches you, and the group of players you are with, and judges your skill level, pacing and stress levels and deciedes where and when to place monsters and events. In other words, even though this game has only 20 maps, none of the will EVER play the same way twice. You will never know ahead of time where the enemies will be, when the mob of 20 zombies will race around and over everything in their path to claw yer guts out. and BTW the director even plays music according to what is happening in the game. Which, despite it changing at the whim of the AI director, has never seemed out of place of poorly mixed. All in all. this is an amazing game. I give it 98% simply becase I think that there could be more levels, and more boss monsters.. however, valve has already promised to give us these things so I may as well give it 100%. Expand

Its impossible to stay out of war, because even when you give your hard earned technology, great people, or gold, in 4 turns they demand more. Gets very aggravatiing. 4. No "workers" - You're probably familiar with the worker concept - find the resource, build a road to it, and construct the appropriate contraption for extracting the resource. In CivRev, there are no workers, and resources just float themselves to you i suppose, once you discover them. Which means in PC versions, if you liked being "the guy with all the oil" In CivRev, there is no such title. 3. One way highway on death threats - Not only do they come at you every 2 turns demading everything, but if you're the guy who should be throwing the threats, too bad. From playing the game, i have not been able to find how to threaten other people out of their goods. The closest I've come is kicking some nads so hard they'll pay me 25 gold to stop. When the ball's in your court, this really takes a powerful arsenal out of your repitoire. 2. Diplomacy - Someone enlighten me. How could they have messed up the diplomacy this bad? You start a diplomacy, an your only options are - tech for money, or money for tech - I dont think i need to go into how elaboorate trading was in PC civ games. 1. Game Customization - This is by far the only mistake i have have not been able to overcome. You pick a scenario, or single player, pick a civilization, and you've begun. If you try to take a shortcut by jumping across the turn on a cat-walk (level 2 blood harvest) and you fall, you get screwed. You lose pretty much all you're health if you fall just 10 feet. Before the game came out i heard there would be a variety of guns.. thats a lie, theres 6 different primary weapons, pistols, thats 7, then dual pistols (if that even counts) and thats it. Pipe bombs and molotov cocktails count as miscellanious, but I'm pretty sure they counted them as guns. Sometimes you had to think, like "ooh, molotov, lets chuck it at the tank and see what happens" but yea, its basically point and shoot. Teamwork is 100 percent essential and theres no way you can go ninja, or rambo and run out and kill everything. They could fixed almost all the flaws, even if they did, there would always be that 1 big flaw. For the FPS game lover, the fact that many people don't play a lot, just once in a while, and don't learn everything, all the usual spots for items, tactics and what-not (making them a 'noob') ruins it for almost the entire team when they decide to help up a computer teammate instead of shooting off the hunter of a human player. As far as knowing the "traps"? You can't know them. The Director, Valve's awesome piece of AI is analyzing your play style in real time. It helps you or harms you depending on how well you're doing, and the attacks will never come from the same place twice.
This is genius, as far as I'm concerned. And the strength is definitely in the co-op play. If you don't have access to online play, maybe that's your problem. Never before have I seen a game where the players are so well coordinated, and I was playing in a game where only one other player had a mic. You'd never see that in TF2. We worked together, and we won.
Final summation: This game is brilliant.

Engaging action, good AI, great online experience, but it is missing that feeling of being your character- just as many of Valve's previous games did. I've been playing Left 4 Dead for three days straight, and although I was skeptical when I noticed that there were only 4 levels, I soon realized that hanging with friends and blasting zombies in the face NEVER gets old. Best zombie game I've ever played, and that's coming from an undead aficionado.

This is an amazing game, and the fact that it changes every time you play it just makes it even better. I don't see how people find it boring, as when I got the demo, I spent 15+ hours on those 2 levels, playing it again and again, with mates and randoms online. And Jack T., how violent a game is shouldnt make it an automatic 0. And since when are games about graphics and story? They are about GAMEPLAY. Sure, a game with a story is always good, but Valve has said, they didnt want a big story because then gamers would have to go through cutscenes every time they played, and that would get boring. 10/10 all the way. Repetitive fun, you will be able to play these (few) levels over and over, without getting bored of it. I can understand that people don't quite like it because it's not the most varied game, but you will never grow bored of killing hordes of zombies while waiting for someone to save you. First off, at Jack T, who I assume has the last name Thompson, this has a BLOOD MARK ON THE COVER. Not only that, but a severed finger and a 17+ on the front. Any idiot should be able to tell that it's not a game for small children. Also, there was a reason for your disbarment. great game. There could be more levels and weapons, but valve/steam should add those with time (and the users once the SDK is released). Also, more zombie types would make the game better too. The "AI director" really keeps this game from being stale. The COOP aspect of this game is phenominal. I'm a huge coop fan, and there are not enough coop games in my view. This one reallygreat game. If the fast moving zombies coming from all directions doesn't scare you, then maybe the special infected that leave you helpless will. The hunters that pounce on you and force your [surprisingly helpful AI] allies to save you. The Boomers who vomit on you causing a hoard of angry zombies to maul you should have your other teammates circle you as you're blinded by the smile. At the time of posting, 26897 zombies had been harmed playing of this game by yours truly. Now assume I kill an average of four hundred or so each time I play a level. Do the math. I've played Left 4 Dead that many times. And I will continue to do so, it's that much fun. I don't think I can give any better praise than that...

Left 4 Dead is an online focused first person shooter in which a group of up to four players take on the role of survivors in a zombie apocalypse and have to work together to make it to safety. To this day Left 4 Dead, and its sequel, remain amongst the best online experiences in gaming and the real key to the games success is that working together is not optional. Wandering off alone will almost always lead to certain death from one of the many enemy types out to kill you and the game perfectly balances the need to keep yourself alive whilst also looking out for your friends. With enemies appearing in different locations on each play-through there is also plenty of replayablity.

If only Valve would make another one…

One of the best FPS games of all time. The characters are entertaining, the level design is great too. The games only flaw is the variety of weapons, of which there is around 5. The game has superb multilayer and really encourages teamwork. If you like FPS games, zombies and playing with friends, check this game out!

  1. Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.
