    Pros: Amazing blend of action, horror, co-op, vs, and single player. This game generates an amazing amount of replayability and immersion with the AI director shaking things up with every play through. Each campaign has a different feel and covers a vast amount of ground without letting players get lost along the way. In the same vein, snagging the last standing survivor with the smoker's tongue just as he reaches a fallen comrade is diabolical in it's hilarity. Cons: The game was wasted on 360 owners, most of whom wouldn't know a good game if it pounced on them and clawed their faces off. Griefing idiots make the co-op experience a considerably less fun. Rare, but incredibly aggravating bugs such as jumping down from a ledge a short distance and having the game think you'll fall to your death, making you hang there until you either die or are rescued. Bottom line: This game is hands down the best multiplayer game of the year, the best co-op game in memory, and may well prove to be one of the best games of the last (or next) ten years. Do yourself a favor, if you have a pc that will run this game, buy a copy yesterday. If you have a 360, pawn your noob-box and get a pc so you can L2 play real games; ones you don't have to pay a fee to enjoy online. Failing that, the 360 version is still a beacon of gaming brilliance in a sea of utter mediocrity.… Expand

    Anyway... Game's great. Playing it on Adv and getting killed so baddly w/ my freinds at night. 3 hrs to pass Dead Air. IT WAS AWESOME!!

    Loved the whole team concept. You always goto go and save someone or get saved other every 30 seconds to a min. Only time we had to drop the teamwork was the final run to safty and beating the round, Sacrifice someone since we were all hurt too bad so that the rest could snipe from a good distance. And when theres only like 1 or 2 people left and had to rescuse survivors for backup. It is Awesome~ >_<

    Ridiculously fun when played with friends. Almost unmatched. Each campaign is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours long, and changes each time you play. It doesn't get old! It's great to pick up and play one campaign a night in between other games. Versus mode is also a joy to play, as both human or zombie. The true cinematic feel of the game is apparent throughout, and it pays constant Ridiculously fun when played with friends. Almost unmatched.     Look. For anyone looking for a very fun game no matter how long you play it, this is your game. Anyone who says it is short, they are clearly playing on lower difficulties! Once you try going through these hordes with your friend beside you on expert, it becomes a whole new and exciting game. Just buy, play, and have fun!

    I've been playing this game non stop since the hour it was released. I can't get enough of shooting zombies through the heart, to watch the full out run come to a staggering halt. The source engine is by far superior to any other on the market - well, maybe rivaled only by the current rendition of the Unreal Engine. In my opinion id has a whole lot to make up for.     This game is amazing and fun for replay ability. Those who voted low obviously don't have close knit friends and groups to play with where the lobby and game matchmaking come in for pure joy! Honestly anyone who complains about the graphics on this needs to realize games don't have to have the "best" graphics ever to be one of the most fun games! And don't be put off the by the thought of only 4 campaigns or the idea of constant co-op gameplay because there's also the fantastic Versus mode. It's possibly even more fun than the standard co-op. The ability to play as the zombies, and the threat of a human zombie team when playing as the survivors adds a whole new dimension to the game that ramps up the fun factor ten fold. Not to mention the fact that Valve plans to keep the game supported for a long time with new DLC content. They've already announced that the first package of downloadable content will be available soon. If you're looking for a shooter with plenty of action, tight gameplay, and absolutely fantastic multiplayer gaming, then look no further than Left 4 Dead.… Expand

    Best co-op game of all-time. No denying that. If you gave this game any less than a six, than you're an idiot who never played online. IT IS A GAME OBVIOUSLY CENTERED AROUND ONLINE PLAY. IF YOU DID NOT HAVE XBOX LIVE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT THE GAME. All that aside, there will be DLC really soon, so no more of playing No Mercy all the time on Versus.

    Excellent Game. When I first picked it up on it's release I was worried because it only had 4 maps. My Best Friend and I played through all 4 campaigns in the first 5 hours of the game and I was sitting there like "That's it". So then we upped the ante and started playing on Expert and got our butts handed to us. So with the achievements pounding at the back of our minds (I am a Excellent Game. When I first picked it up on it's release I was worried because it only had 4 maps. My Best Friend and I played through all 4 campaigns in the first 5 hours of the game and I was sitting there like "That's it". So then we upped the ante and started playing on Expert and got our butts handed to us. So with the achievements pounding at the back of our minds (I am a chievo junkie) we continued to play it, initially to get the full 1000. However, once I got the 1000, we still continued to play it (something that I NEVER do). Only then did I realize that Valve really had something there. So what if the 4 maps seem short. With the Versus, Survival, and Campaign, plus the addition of a new Map, this game has still remained fresh, something that is very hard to do. So good job, Valve, my hat is off to you. And for anyone looking to get the game, do it. You will be thankfull… Expand

    This game is the best I have Played in a while. If isn't just reload shoot shoot shoot reload. It is more then that. You get the fun of being just about killed by a horde of zombies, whats not fun with that. I can say they should just have one big game not four but they are really awesome by them selfs.     This game represents what can be done well with Xbox Live. With its intense multiplayer experience and endless replay value via AI Director. I recommend it to anyone looking for zombie co-op fun.

    I have done the same missions 500 times and I want to do them 5,000 more! This game is garbage on your own but on Xbox live this is the best game I have yet to play. The satisfaction of blasting away hundreds of zombies with friends and strangers is relentless. The options of customization are few but with such a near-perfect product it is all I could need. If I want to run through carelessly blasting zombies Normal or Easy campaigns are perfect. When I want a challenge I play Expert Campaign or Versus. Playing against other people in Versus makes the game so much more difficult but its a challenge you and your team can overcome. Expert campaigns can be extremely hard but I appreciate this challenge. In Expert mode one or two friendly fire shots can cripple your ally and a handful of zombie smacks does the same. This makes the game play much more careful and thoughtful but also gives it some realism. If you shot a friend it would knock the hell out of him. This is a game stripped of anything not needed and it plays beautifully for it. I LOVE this game and highly recommend it.… Expand

    Best zombie game yet. Every turn reveals a new futile situation where you think "there's no way we can get out of this!" But, working together, there is always a way out. People who like to run-and-gun or those who go off on their own for points grabbing will not do well in this game. Fight together or die alone.

    BASED ON THE DEMO: This game was one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. And that was just the demo. The spawn points for enemies, weapons, even the music effects and the like change every playthrough and when you get a good group of guys to play with, this game is amazing. GOTY-quality.

    This is the best instance of Co-operative game play that i've ever experienced. The game is entirely beautifully paced, dramatically dynamic and insanely fun. There have been complaints regarding the length of the individual campaigns but to be totally honest, with the random and variable enemy spawning there is hundreds of hours of gameplay here. If you have played the "demo" (the full games not even out yet) you would get a "small" taste of what the real game is like. Super fast and super uber zombies keep this game fast paced and always asking where did Bill go?

    Great game indeed. The reviewers here that are giving the game low scores because of poor graphics and sound etc don't have a clue!! this game is based on some old sterotypical cheesie zombie movie and the sound acting and graphics are meant to add to this (which it does).

    I just bought the game last night. It was worth every cent. I am not big on fighting games, i stick to the sports games, but wow take my advice and get this game. To give you a background of the game here you go. There is 5 different stages and each one has about 5 chapters if i remember correctly. There is 4 different difficulties. I choose the 2nd hardest just to start. I did single I just bought the game last night. It was worth every cent. The computer plays well with you. Your team mates heal you and protect you like you would expect. The fact that literally 50-100 zombies will come flying out at once unexpected it awesome. Tons of narrow places with zombies waiting. Some of them dont really bother you. In fact i went into a bedroom with a zombie just slamming her head against a wall???? Either way i just went up and owner her soul but still made me laugh. And the witch was a nice touch. (Just dont shine the light on her or its pretty much game over for you). I then played co op with a buddy. We put the difficutly one more up to the third hardest. And that was def hard. Not impossible but def a challenge. Just when you think you have a place under control think again. This game rarely lets you rest. And this is not a game that once you beat it your like "time to trade in". This game will forever be fun. Mark my words. I dont play video games a lot but man this is something im trying to make more time for. I was seriously thinking about calling out of work to play more. haha. anyways hope this gives you a little boost to go out and buy it. Hit me up when online with x box live.     All of the naysayers on this board probably played it for an hour or so without trying it on either the higher difficulties, didn't play it with a friend or online, or didn't play the versus mode. It's a BLAST. Anyone who has played it with friends or a good team online will tell you that it is an amazing play experience.

It isnt so fun on single player but whit 3 friends, its probably best multiplayer game ever made. BUY THIS GAME if you like zombies and network shooters.

They limit your health and ammo supply to give the game a challenge. Its not about beating each level, its just doing better than the other team. (First you play as the humans, with the Left For Dead is the most fun game on the 360 I have ever played. It is so addicting, and on Xbox Live you cannot stop playing.     One of the best coop multi-player games out there. You have to actually work with your team and rely on them, which most games lack. This is one aspect of the game that makes it so much greater then "the run around do what you want shoot-em up games" that lack true teamwork.     A team game that focuses on precision, communication, and good squad skills that is also scary! It can be a little disorienting at first but most get the hang of it. Find a sociable group of friends to try it out and don't get too hung up on dying - it will happen. A lot.

The game constantly changes the spots where you'll encounter minibosses, bosses, and mobs of zombies in the levels, which is a godsend, if you ask me. Even though there are only 20 levels in the whole game, the fact that the game spawns zombies in different places almost EVERY time you play through them greatly changes the experience every time. If you don't have XBL, i hope you have friends who still play System Link play, because the true soul found in L4D is when you're bashin zombies with 3 human buddies. Oh and as for the graphics? Next time you're mowing down zombies in a dark corridor, after you survive the wave, try and count all of the new details in your environment. Zombie limbs, blood and trash litter the world in L4D, and it's oddly satisfying. Everything about this game enhances the experience of a survival game, and it's not even close to being as scary as Bioshock [for the kids out there]. If i could, i would give this game a 9.99, for one reason only, and thats because [for me, anyways] the weapons seem a little unbalanced. I always stick with the shotgun anyways. With that notion aside, this game is the shiz, and should be enjoyed by all fans of any FPS.… Expand

    Exceptional Fun. Rod N, you have obviously completely missed the point of the game. It's not trying to be GOW2 or anything else. You should be comparing this game to other zombie shooters. Take something for your minstral cramps and chillout.

    Ive only played the demo so far but i can honestly say ive never had so much fun playing a game since, god i dunno, a long time!. It has Good graphics and Amazing Gameplay. I rate it 10 simply becuase It is soo much fun, especially with ya mates. Its fast Paced, Frantic and Surprising!. For example: All the zombies appeared to be cleared and it was at the end of the level and i was just going down sum stairs to collect a few items for the next stage, when all the sudden A horde of hundreds of Zombies appear out of no where when all my mates went with me and i got completely over run in seconds. I had to sound Help right away. Evan all my friends were having a hard time saving my ass. Unfortunately i didn't make it, So i recommend when you do play this Game Don't wonder off even if there is no zombies in site!(especially then) There is more to it than zombies as well you get Bloomers which are like Fat and Slow Zombies that can not run. It pukes loads of green stuff on u, which attracts hordes off zombies towards u while your blinded for a minute. It gets worse than that. There is Hunters which Pick off the weakest members or ones that are furthest away from the group etc. they are very fast can crawl on walls and while pounce on top of you and rip u to shredds with its deadly claws. they can kill u in less than 10 seconds with full Life bar! and There is others ones 2, the worst ones would be the Tank and the Witch. The Witch Kills u in one hit and will only attack when disturbed. The tank will not stop until u are completely dead, evan when ur lying on the floor. Takes Alot of Team effort to kill and is very fast and Strong. In the Full Game you are able to play as the monsters as well and control the Zombies yourself, plus those who like multilayer split screen for the xbox this has it to. So for those who dont have online this is Still worth it to buy, hell its still worth it just playing on ur own because even your team mates or bots in the game are awsome to play with, whether there computers or real people lol. The AI is that Damn good lol. There are many Levels to the game aswell in many different settings to suit your pleasure. Plus i herd that there will be a content update shortly after the release of the game which should include more levels weapons and so forth. So i wouldn't worry about content either to be honest. Anyway the story is pretty average but in for a game like it is it doesn't really need one. Its Just about having a Bloody good time with really friends really. I love it, everyone who's played with me Loves it, where all buying it. Its amazing on both platforms xbox360 and PC, ive played both versions. Neither stands out over the other, the only difference would be the graphics are better on PC but that Varies on how good ur PC is really. The xbox still look nice still tho. PC version is the cheapest one and will get all updates for free, while xbox is about a tenner more but offers 4 player split screen as an extra. I wouldnt always go for the cheaper option tho unless ur friends are getting it on PC and your PC can run it well. The easiet option would to get it for xbox. To Download PC Demo head over to : Google and type steam, click on the steam website and then download steam. then download left 4 dead Demo from Steam, its free.     Left 4 Dead is a great game in many different aspects. It's one of those games that you and your friends will keep playing day in and day out. The game is scary and intense. Not sure why there is a 6.0 overall rating for the game? Something has to be wrong.

    this game ROCKS, it's timeless kinda like dice. You can play the same level again and again and it does not seem like it's getting old. The feeling of stalking your prey is intense and when it leads to a death your pumped. Great game. Get it for PC

    but i have one problem with you MetaCritic that the users here should know. Turtle Rock Studios did not develop the game. Turtle Rock Studios is now known as Valve South. We all took a door and the stairs and started firing, chattering on the mic "Watch the door behind you!" "Holy shit there's a lot of them!" "Crotch down, CROTCH DOWN!" Finally the streams of zombies started to thin, and everyone took a breath. We made it.

    Then the house shook...big time. That's when I fell in love with this game.

    What a fantastic game. One of the best coop experiences around. The graphics are great considering the amount of zombies that rush at you sometimes. The sound is very atmospheric and downright scary at times. There is lots of replayability thanks to the A.I. Director. One of the best released in a long time and definate contenter for GOTY for me.

    Although the graphics are not up to par with such games as mirror's edge and gears of war 2, the gameplay is truely innovative. The team must work together to fight insurmountable odds and overcome the hordes of zombies. Never playing a game like this, I have been playing it ever sice i downloaded the demo, and the next day, bought the game. Amazing.

In other words, even though this game has only 20 maps, none of the will EVER play the same way twice. You will never know ahead of time where the enemies will be, when the mob of 20 zombies will race around and over everything in their path to claw yer guts out. and BTW the director even plays music according to what is happening in the game. Which, despite it changing at the whim of the AI director, has never seemed out of place of poorly mixed. All in all. this is an amazing game. I give it 98% simply becase I think that there could be more levels, and more boss monsters.. however, valve has already promised to give us these things so I may as well give it 100%.… Expand

The best part is if you have it for your PC you can turn on sv_cheats 1. You can do all kinds of stuff to it. like spawn pipebombs/propanetanks/all the weoapons/gastank/ZOMBIES!!!     Okay, first off, i'll say i love this game. What with the bad rates and comments? The game is great. I may not by 17+ (preteen) but when my sister showed me this game, i love it. We play like everyday now and its awesome. Since im still a bit young, i'll say i was a little scared. I would always shake like crazy, cause i would be scared of the zombies attacking, but i Okay, first off, i'll say i love this game. What with the bad rates and comments? The game is great.     Simply the best cooperative shooter you can play, and the first to specificly focus on innovating coop gameplay, the combat is simple, but the gameplay is unpredictable and challenging, playing with friends creates its own unique experience, when a demo keeps people interested longer than most full games, its doing somthing right!

    This is easily the best co-op game I have ever played! This is a real co-op game where if you get split up YOU WILL DIE. This may sound bad but its really not. It's not like Halo or CoD were you can split off from your team & go all Rambo on the zombies, you have tho stick together and watch eachothers back which gives the game an authentic "survival" aspect. Plus the Director keepsThis is easily the best co-op game I have ever played! This is a real co-op game where if you get split up YOU WILL DIE. This may sound bad but its really not. It's not like Halo or CoD were you can split off from your team & go all Rambo on the zombies, you have tho stick together and watch eachothers back which gives the game an authentic "survival" aspect. Plus the Director keeps you on edge the whole game and always gives you a different challange every time you play. Another big part of the game which was compleatly left out of the above reviews is the versus mode. The versus mode is a maximum of 4-on-4 where 4 people are survivors and 4 people are special zombies. The teams swichup at the end of every round so that you can get your revenge.     This is an amazing game that can be played over and over. The game has a built in AI director that spawns the zombies and Super zombies at randomized areas in the game and the game modifys the dificulty based on how well the team is doing as a whole.

    Those who say the game has no story or script is paying no attention to ingame dialoge with is randimized baised on what other players say.

    As far as knowing the "traps"? You can't know them. The Director, Valve's awesome piece of AI is analyzing your play style in real time. It helps you or harms you depending on how well you're doing, and the attacks will never come from the same place twice.
    This is genius, as far as I'm concerned. And the strength is definitely in the co-op play. If you don't have access to online play, maybe that's your problem. Never before have I seen a game where the players are so well coordinated, and I was playing in a game where only one other player had a mic. You'd never see that in TF2. We worked together, and we won.

    And someone gave it a zero because it's too gore. But it's 18+! O.o

    simply put, best co-op game made to date. the versus is innovative and infinitely replayable. everything about this game is awesome. i think the low user rating is from ps3 fanboys upset about the lack of valve's support, just like gears of war 2 got flamed by fanboys.

    One hell of an addicting game with the quality you expect from Valve. The game will only get better in time with the constant support and the custom content that will come out. This is a must-buy multiplayer game, and will surely be a hit at LAN parties.

    I've been playing Left 4 Dead for three days straight, and although I was skeptical when I noticed that there were only 4 levels, I soon realized that hanging with friends and blasting zombies in the face NEVER gets old. Best zombie game I've ever played, and that's coming from an undead aficionado.

    This game is so much fun when you play it with a friend. I think if you play it alone it is boring so I recommend only playing this with friends. This doesnt have any replay value though. Its better just to rent or something and then give it back.

    Valve is now my favorite game company, all thanks to this game! I've never played an actual "good" zombie game, aside from RE, and 'Left 4 Dead' is just what I needed! 4 player co-op has never been so fun!

    I really love playing this game! The campaign is great for it keeps me compelled to play by myself or with friends. The online feature is great for it can get boring playing by yourself and the ai can be too dumb to save you or to be helpful. Survival is a great feature in which you just have to survive long enough.

    Played with my 2 other best friends. Always had one cpu playing which made it hilarious. I always said this was my favorite game all time. The random generated levels made it so fun to keep playing.

Someone complained about zombie AI. Exactly what is it you want? This is a zombie shooter. This game gives you variety unlike other zombie games. Sure you play the same levels, but the hordes will come from different areas, and special infected are well circulated throughout the levels. You never know what's around corner. This is a fun game, not a deep game. It's not supposed to have dozens of cut scenes, super deep characters, tons of dialogue. It's pure action fun. I enjoy its simplicity. Yes, the loading screens are long. I don't mind because it gives me time to cool my heels, get up and grab a soda or something. There's witty banter between your team during the campaign. I do think it might've been cool to have included in game the character backgrounds, where they came from and how they found each other. The game just doesn't call for it, though.
    The only frustrating element I found was the NPCs if you play solo. Don't get me wrong, I did not have online access when I first got this so I played it solo and still loved it. But sometimes your NPCs are useless when you are incapacitated or they fall off a building and die.
    I have a soft spot for older games. It was all about simple fun, not trying to make every game into an epic RPG-like experience which in my opinion slows and stunts the fun of a game like this. If Left 4 Dead tried this I think it would be a different game, people would've compared it to Resident Evil or something and would've gotten lost in the shuffle. Instead, it stands out.    … Expand

However, it's one of the best 2 player games I have ever played. The split screen is done really well allowing you a good view of everything and the interaction between characters is good.     This game is everything you ever dreamed about. George A. Romero on the 360. The controls are very static, which gives it the minus one, but everything else is great. Their is the most basic of storylines in this game. You are with three other people during a zombie apocolypse: survive. Fast paced, action packed, fun online and offline. I recommend this as top game for 2008.

    There's nothing more satisfying than playing as a zombie in the 4v4 Co-op Campaign and waiting for just the right moment to pounce on that one player that's lagging behind, or call in a swarm of the undead on your unsuspecting enemies. All in all, Left 4 Dead is a zombie massacre masterpiece.

    I love this game. The game would be great enough as single player, but co-op lets it take the prize. Most would take off points for its shallow story, but that makes it better. There is an air of mystery surrounding the infection, and the story is mostly told by graffiti on the walls of the safe houses. There are even references to valves previous game Portal.     This is about as tense as it gets. It recreates the dread we experienced in Doom 3, but throws it in by the gallon instead of a trickle. Single player is tolerable, but L4D really shines with friends. Campaign mode and the fantastic Versus mode are excellent. Well worth a look!

Whether your a fan of FPSs or not you owe it to yourself to experience this game for what it is. A rewarding (if not short) game with more to offer than most of the games out this holiday season.

Get 3 of your friends together and play through a advanced/expert campaign and I pretty much guarantee you will have an hour and a half of pure video game exhiliration.     One of the best games I have ever played, great to link up with friends and play and even fun with strangers, as long as they co-operate. keeps you interested and have been playing it for weeks at least 3 hours a day.... love it!! i dont know how people cant like this

    Finally a co-op FPS that has re-playability. Left 4 Dead is quite fun to play with skilled players. The multiplayer interface is very well done with the ability to jump in and out of games. Some of the level design seems a bit dark, cluttered and claustrophobic. Overall this game provides some new substance that is has been lacking in this genre.

    Giant Bomb should be ashamed for giving this an 80, and Mortal Kombat vs. DC a 100. Left 4 Dead is simple, but it certainly doesn't deserve anything that's just in the 8 range and below for ratings. It has it's flaws and a little lack of depth, but it's an amazing experience, with one of the best and most interesting online modes and team-based gameplay I've seen.

    Left 4 Dead is truly one of the most fascinating games I've played in years. It brings out most of the qualities i have been looking for: cooperation, lots of guns and a lot of teamwork. Although it lacks many things that would make it perfect, it is still a game to play, and every penny you spent on it, will pay off immediately as you start. In other words: Epic.

    The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.
