While in this segment of the game you would want to avoid enemy as much as possible which is why I think those Hard Core Halo fans say that it sucks but overall the campaign is amazing and possibly the best in the Halo series. It has great storytelling and a good transition between flashbacks with a good ending. Firefight is one of the best modes for a fps to date you've might have seen games where you fight waves of enemy but Bungie's take on it is amazing. This would be the perfect feature to the game if it had matchmaking but Bungie neglected to add it to the final product. Overall the game is amazingly good from the spectacular campaign to having fun with friends in firefight but for a 60.00$ price tag it is not. The game is only an expansion with the price tag of a full game. If Bungie would have made an entirely new multiplayer featuring the Odst and their new guns and Visr as well as making matchmaking possible with firefight then the game would be an 11/10 that's how great it would have been just imagine playing multiplayer on it with some night maps using the Visr and the new SMG all the things that could have been but isn't in the game. Still it's a spectacular game none the less but for it having a 60.00$ price tag for something that's not a full game turns that "spectacular" to a great which is why I'm giving it a 9.1/10 instead of a 10/10. I just revisited this game after nearly a decade, and I have to say, it holds up as one of the strongest stories in the entire Halo franchise for me. When Bungie revealed Halo 2 at E3 2003, they introduced us to the sprawling city of New Mombasa in Kenya, which plays a pivotal role in the overall Halo story. This is ground zero for the Covenant invasion of Earth, but when Halo 2 actually came out, the E3 parts were cut and replaced with something a little more disappointing. This game revisits New Mombasa at a pivotal moment in the series' story progression. You assume the role of an ODST soldier that must link up with his squad in the tattered ruins of a Covenant controlled city. The game introduces a new, stealthier playstyle, and constantly reminds you that you are not a Spartan super soldier; larger enemies feel threatening and can be difficult to kill. The game also has a co-op option for story mode. In my opinion, what really makes this game stand out to me is the way that the story is presented. Your character finds clues all over the city to piece together what happened not only to his squadmates, but during the preceding battle. One of my favorite little things is finding an alley full of dead Elites and other Covenant aliens, but no humans. This alludes to how the Elites seceded from the Covenant, but most humans wouldn't know about it yet at this point in the story, because this game chronologically precedes Halo 3. Overall, the game's atmosphere is much darker and more somber than the rest of the franchise, and offers a brand new way to play Halo that still feels like Halo. The story is very strong, and the multiplayer is fun as well, even if it is just horde mode. Expand

Regardless, it is a truly unique game. For those expecting the standard, stellar Halo-style experience they will be somewhat disappointed. The art style and color palette are totally different from Halo 3. The cut-scenes have a more cartoon-like feel to them, and the game is amuchdarker in tones. The story-telling is vastly different, but once you get used to it only then can you appreciate it. ODST slows down the fast pace of Halo story telling to focus, in detail, on the episodic encounters of surviving members of an ODST unit. Instead of vast, galactic battles with epic proportions, ODST tells the small-scale story about the lives of brave and honorable men and women who would have otherwise been considered insignificant. ODST takes a mysterious, suspenseful approach in a fantastic tale on how ODST struggle to save Humanity from the invasion of the Covenant. The Human-Covenant War takes a heavier toll as you literally feel and experience the War from a purely human perspective. You dwell among the dark, dead ruins of one of earth's greatest cities: New Mombassa. You can see Covenant ships hovering nearby and laying waste, you see human soldiers scrambling in guerrilla warfare against alien invaders. You can explore the city and uncover interesting side-stories from a civilian perspective of the attack, and you experience -block-tp-block fighting against occupying covenant forces. The stakes seem higher, and I almost wish this game would have been called Halo: ODST so it could have been a $30 tie-in special release in between Halo 2 and Halo 3. I think more people would have appreciated the game more than way, especially with how the plot progresses and then ends. The story is very interesting, and enjoyable. At first I had a hard time actually liking the characters, but as the game continued on I felt like i fit in among them, and I felt for them and connected to them. The music is unique and enjoyable. The gameplay is solid and smooth. The game is challenging and immensely fun. This game has a high replay value, and is a must-get for anyone who wants a game where they can take time to explore and relish details of a larger story. Expand

It was delightfully different to be presented with the option to walk about a city fighting through the covenant to regroup with my lost squad mates. Visually the game was really no different from any other Halo; however, the ability to walk through a city at night and then see it at a different time of day during a mission was quite enjoyable. The music was supposed to be an homage to the previous games OST's but I really believe the change in style for ODST sound was one of its biggest strengths. The ability to quickly tell a story through little snippets of each squad member made for a great storyline that required you think about how the pieces fit together. I think the timing of the game was also a huge strength. Having a game that you could get through in a little over six hours yet receive an ample story was a nice change of pace. I have found this series to sometimes drag levels out by forcing you to spend a lot of time on non-story progressing moments. That was not at all the case with ODST. Overall I am fairly pleased with the game and it has re-sparked my interest in the series quite a bit. Expand

The new Horde like 'Firefight' mode is fun when there's up to 4 players. Though the game was good, it was really short. The only place where this game loses a point from my score is the poor online connectivity in Firefight and the lack of a proper Battle Rifle. Other than that, this game is an artistic beauty. It deviates extremely far from the typical Halo game and offers a unique, memorable atmosphere of mystery and suspense from beginning to end.

The game takes place in the ruins of New Mombasa, sometime during Halo 2. The story does not involve Master Chief whatsoever, but a squad of ODSTs (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) whose specialty is to drop into battles in pods from an orbiting spaceship. You play as the Rookie, and due to the slipspace rupture, your squad is scattered throughout the city, so Rookie must find them and avoid Covenant patrols. There are no Flood or Elites, but there is a new Covenant enemies called Engineers that provide overshields to allies. It keeps the same weapon arsenal from Halo 3, but certain guns like the SMG have been changed. ODSTs are similar to Spartans in gameplay but they cannot dual wield or use equipment for reasons I do not know. You will have to change up your strategies because ODSTs are noticeably weaker in health than a Spartan. You will be relying on health packs much more now, as there is no shield. New Mombasa is somewhat open-world and you can go inside almost every building, which is really cool. You traverse the city, finding objects like guns and Biofoam canisters from battles that took place earlier in the day. As you find them, there will be a flashback and you will play as a character within the scene. It's a cool concept and it works out really well. Around New Mombasa you can find audio logs, which are incentives to explore, as they tell a story of their own. The action and fights are all really fun, and there are a couple vehicle sections as well. Marines are still idiots but your ODST allies are awesome. They are smart and invincible. They are also cool characters and they each have personalities. There is no multiplayer, but it comes with a second disc of the regular Halo 3 multiplayer. It also introduces Firefight, where you fight waves of enemies by yourself or with three friends. This really is a standout game in the Halo series, and it is a shame it was passed over by most. This is by no means a knock at Halo 3, a game I have a great fondness for, but merely a testament to how good this follow up is.

Although the narrative does slow down somewhat in the segments dedicated purely to the rookie, taking on a much more stealth orientated focus, the action quickly picks up the pace again when returning back to one of our main protagonists. The gameplay is tight and the music on point drenching the New Mombassa streets in piano soaked atmosphere.

The length of the story depends on how long it takes you to get to where the items are that trigger the flashbacks and if you want to find all the hidden audiofiles. Different skulls activate during each round turning on different modifiers like all enemies dodge grenades and plasma more often or enemies do nothing but throw grenades until they run out. Its good, not great.the campaign is quite short, firefight is awesome but comes without matchmaking(none of my friends have the game), and i had all the online maps bfore anyway(which i say most people have), so only 3 new maps. Otherwise a good game with interesting story and if u hav friends playin firefight is a blast. but still, it is full price.

By no means a perfect game, it's very good while it lasts. Firefight mode is a pretty good distraction, but a bit more multiplayer effort would have been nice, instead of just 3 new maps. Fans of the series will enjoy; everyone else probably won't see what the fuss is about.

This is that, as long and extensive the campaign is, and as good as firefight and the multiplayer is, I believe that there simply isn't enough content to satisfy those $60 that I paid for this game. The only things that are new to the franchise are the campaign and firefight. And while they are both very fun, I believe that this game should have been priced at $40, even $50, but not $60. However, just remember that the game is very fun, and if you just have some money laying around, but can't think of anything to spend it on, then definitely buy this game. You won't regret it. Expand

But, to be honest about the game, it's not really a revolutionary campaign. But also let's keep in mind that ODST is not meant to be a stand-alone game (as some critics above mention which is untrue), it is an expansion of the already amazing Halo 3, and in creating what it set out to do it succeeded. So if you're looking for a completely new game then you'll be disappointed, but if you're looking for expanded content (Firefight mode is addicting) then this game owns. Expand

For example, some missions have you fighting on foot, while others force you to use a certain type of vehicle, like the Scorpion tank or Banshee fighter plane. The Firefight game mode is a nice addition to Halo, but I recommend playing it co-operatively; it tends to get boring when playing alone. Even if you're not interested in the Campaign or Firefight, the second disc is still worth the whole price. Disc 2 allows you to play the original Halo 3's multiplayer mode. While I understand the griping about the 5-7 hour campaign, that doesn't make this a "bad" game. The gameplay is solid, graphics are on par with othe Halo titles, and multiplayer is outstanding as usual. If the campaign was about doubled in size I'd be a lot more favorable but overall it's a solid game. and it comes with an invite for the Halo Reach Beta tesing. Cant wait.

Bungie set out to build a small expansion for Halo 3. In typical Bungie fashion, the project snowballed into what can basically be considered a full game. Built in just one year, ODST manages to deliver a solid single player experience with great world building, art direction, and a nice retouch of the classic Halo formula to distinguish it from other Halo titles.

The story focuses on a squad of ODSTs, who are basically top-of-the-line soldiers bested only by Spartans, in a military campaign gone awry. In game you play as a mute ODST called the Rookie. Separated from your squad, you're tasked with exploring the pivotal city of New Mombassa to search for clues which might lead you to the rest of your squad. Recovering clues triggers flashback missions in the context of the clue, in which you fill the boots of ODSTs who are part of the Rookie's squad. They're characterized fairly well, and the story has its moments, though it's just a part of what makes the world of ODST truly memorable. Where ODST really shines is through its world building; audio logs, character dialogue, and great art direction, which when combined really sell the setting and ground it firmly in the expansive Halo universe. In a casual playthrough it's so very easy to miss all of the tiny pieces of information scattered about the games' world. Look for them, and you'll be grounded firmly in a very unique and richly atmospheric setting. And what about the music? Martin O'Donnell truly outdoes himself here, delivering a moody original score that delivers on an emotional level, matching the themes of isolation, desperation, tension, and mass exodus that might accompany the sudden occupation of such a large city, and the Rookie's lone journey through a soup of alien combatants.

As for playing as the ODSTs themselves, their gear and some tweaked combat mechanics really help differentiate these soldiers from Spartans. They can take less damage, and have a two stage health system requiring the player to scout for medpacks if their health bar is low. Dual wielding is gone, though players can still wield any weapon the come across. Vehicle handling has been tweaked and tightened to improve handling characteristics on the streets of Mombassa and still remains a staple of the combat throughout. Enemy AI has also gotten a slight improvement, with groups of enemies acting in squads of many varieties, keeping combat fresh and fun. Though the game is powered by the aging Halo 3 tech and has limited resolution for HD consoles, the art direction is great and like Halo 3 this game stands the test of time in that regard. As expected, theater mode is fully functional in ODSTs single player, and is a novel feature that lets you watch your exploits from any angle and at any speed, good for people like me who enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of the world. Also, easter eggs. They're everywhere, and they will put a smile on your face.

The real meat of Halo games and what keeps people coming back is undoubtedly the multiplayer experience. While ODST doesn't have its own ODST themed PvP multiplayer, it does have firefight, which is a very fun arcadey co-op survival mode that is both fun and challenging due to the chaotic and multi-faceted sandbox design. Firefight maps are well designed, and hours of fun can be had trying to tackle the par-score challenges with your friends for achievements, or just to take a Brute Chopper for a spin and mow down your alien foes. Surviving for longer enables skulls, which are basically difficulty modifiers that change enemy and player traits such as weapon effectiveness per-type, shield regeneration mechanics, enemy AI strength, and more. It really is a great mode that's found its place in the suite of modes Halo has to offer.

ODST also comes with the complete Halo 3 multiplayer experience, packaging all of Halo 3's multiplayer features and maps (including all DLC maps) into a single disc. This is a pretty sweet deal for those who don't have the DLC, especially considering the quality of the DLC maps.

In all, Halo 3: ODST is a great game. The single player campaign is memorable and stands out with just one thorough playthrough, and its other features round out the package nicely. If you take the time to explore all that ODST has to offer, you'll find yourself immersed in a great setting that delivers the great flow of Halo's combat with a few twists.

Now the main thing that keeps this from the 10 are as goes:
    1) Lack of elites

Although there are 3 big problems I would attributer to ODST and that's its length, shared engine with 3 and missed potential. So ODST is a bit shorter the other Halo games with some levels being much shorter then others. While I don't personally mind the length and see it as a smaller side game to the series it is a common criticism non the less. The game reuses the same engine and assets to Halo 3 this gives the game a bit less of identity to the other games but the game makes up for it by having a different tone and soundtrack to the other games. With smooth Jazz that accompanies the player as they traverse the streets of New Mombasa. And finally the game had a lot of potential with its semi open world to explore and seemingly darker tone it could of gone with and being the only game where you don't play as a spartan. But the open world is empty and constricting and the only reward for exploring is pieces to a side story that gives more context to the finale act of the game which is really interesting to listen too but after that there's no reason to not just rush to the next clue and level on repeat play throughs. And the game could of had a much darker and interesting plot but at the end everyone survives and the mission was a success. I guess we did get that with reach but it could of been more interesting to see it here. The narrative overall is still interesting and while much of the ODST team is kind of boring I find Buck and Veronica to be interesting charters. And finally other then being a bit more squishy and having no shield even though you have something very similar to one the game functions much the same. Which isn't bad Halo 3 is a ton of fun to play and it translates to ODST as well. It just seems kind of of a waste to not do more with the idea.

ODST doesn't fail to deliver an amazing experience. It provides a more grounded take on Halo, with a great campaign and the introduction of firefight, now one of the best game modes in the series.

Halo: ODST is a great experience while it lasts. This is not to be confused with the statement that it is a great game. If you are a diehard fan of the franchise then you most likely will look past the stagnation and lack of evolution in the series and disregard the fact that this is, by far, the worst game in the series. The graphics are suitable, but the Halo 3 graphics engine Halo: ODST is a great experience while it lasts. This is not to be confused with the statement that it is a great game. If you are a diehard fan of the franchise then you most likely will look past the stagnation and lack of evolution in the series and disregard the fact that this is, by far, the worst game in the series. The graphics are suitable, but the Halo 3 graphics engine wasn't even breathtaking when Halo 3 was released. Three years later the engine is in dire need of a rebuild. With games akin to Mass Effect 2 (on the horizon) MGS4, Gears of War 2 and (especially) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - there is absolutely no excuse for a AAA title of this magnitude to be as lackluster graphically as ODST is. The sound design is commendable and the campaign is where ODST could have been a stellar title. The problem is, it will only take people 5-6 hours to beat on Lengendary. In such a short amount of time, Bungie was unable to fully develop the characters and really give the narrative any actual meat which could have added to the mythos of the Halo universe. The multiplayer is essentially the same as Halo 3 and, as such, does nothing but bring the overall score down (once again for stagnating). The pistol is back, which is fantastic, but it should have never been removed. The three new maps are about status quo for the series. all in all, the only thing that pushes the series forward is Firefight. You'll hear plenty of people discussing whether or not this title is an expansion or not. If reviewers are to judge it as an expansion, then it is almost as good as GTA: Lost and the Damned - almost, but for three times the cost. If a reviewer is to consider the game as an actual sequel/prequel (thereby attempting to justify the $60 asking price, sadly, the game doesn't offer enough. Halo: ODST is worth playing, it really is. The only caveat is that you should wait a year or so until the price drops to where it should have been in the first place. Expand

This describes the very first level I played on ODST. Eventually, some bad guys showed up who weren't there before, and suddenly I got a hint that told me to push the d-pad... for another hint. Since I am an expert gamer, this kind of experience is ridiculous in AAA title. This also describes the "rookie" missions in the game, in particular the very first mission, and the third "rookie" mission. I dont understand the logic in "lets let the player wander with no idea what they are supposed to be doing". The rest of the game is more halo 3. There is in particular a part of the game where you collect audio clips and can view a slide show that plays with it. The voice acting was pretty bad, like Reading Rainbow children's book bad. You'd think Microsoft could find an aisan lady who actually sounds naturally asian and not phony stereotype cartoon character asian. The plot of the game seems irrelevant to the big picture (thus far). I was hoping it would explain Halo 3's quizzical beginning and fill in for what the kaput movie was supposed to explain, but it doesn't. At all. By itself though, its not a bad plot. Best part is that there's no AI chick who freezes your view and controls and nags you for abandoning her (for which you have no idea what she was talking about nor do you care). The size of the game is well suited for a rental; beat it on legendary on day 6 of my 7 day rental period, spending 1 - 3 hours a day on it. Firefight, while interesting, isn't worth 60 bucks, especially if you don't have any friends who also have this game. There's no matchmaking for it. The "par" score seems rather high as well. I got a 4,000 something score on my first try, after playing for over 20 minutes. The par was 200,000. Expand

I've always thought the Halo series has been seriously overated after Halo 1. ODST just proves how overated this series is. The campaign was painfully short and uniteresting. The characters were bland and the story was decent. With that said I can't say it wasn't a bad shooter. The game did what it had to do as a shooter but it just didn't push the envelope. I've played many games this new generation on every platform and honestly ODST looks and feels like the beginning of the generation. A game should not be measured on it's multiplayer alone. Please people wake up and stop giving this games 8's and 9's. Go play Gears of War or Uncharted, which are much solid games! Expand

For what was supposed to be an expansion pack, I would say that ODST does not disappoint. It adds around 4-6 hours of Campaign and Firefight is a great addition, though not particularly innovative, to the solid game that is Halo 3. A real solid game and well worth your purchase, but let's not for a minute pretend that its of the same genre - reorganising caliber of Halo 3 or Halo 1. Not only this, but lots of bits have been removed: You're A real solid game and well worth your purchase, but let's not for a minute pretend that its of the same genre - reorganising caliber of Halo 3 or Halo 1. This is basicaly because its pretty much the same as Halo 3 - hence all the talk about it being an expansion. The graphics, enemies and gameplay are almost identical. Not only this, but lots of bits have been removed: You're now incredibly weak and move painfuly slowly, you can't dual weild, use equipment, or use the battle rifle (cry). Bungie's answer to all this identical/removed content is the two new weapons: the silenced SMG and the Automag. I feel i must make a point here about the fact that in Halo 2 and 3, the SMG was frickin' useless unless dual-weilded, and even then it had the range of the frickin' energy sword. And yet in ODST, you can't dual-weild and it's still just as useless on its own. Ok so now its got a scope, but like I said, the thing's about as accurate as a shotgun with a 2 foot barrel. The Automag is ok, those first few instant-kill headshots against grunts are fun, but once you see how useless it is against everything else, you'll soon be swapping it for your trusty assault rifle. Weapons - wise, I was more excited about the return of the Brute Plasma Rifle. Of the new content that has been added, it's mainly new locations, which I have to admit are nice and interesting and as always it's probably worth getting it just for an inside look into the amazing Halo universe. The new story is interesting and again reveals lots of stuff about the Halo universe, but it's short and nowhere near as epic or enthralling as the other games, and the characters involved are nowhere near as likeable, mainly because its impossible to keep up with who's who unless you go onto Bungie.net and look at the character profiles, and plus I found it impoosible to take them seriously considering how retarded they look in the cutscenes. Honestly, in Halo 3, people in the cutscenes moved calmly, considerately and realisticaly, but in ODST they look like poorly made ragdolls being hung from the ceiling by nylon stings, and these strings are then being operated by a blind drunk man. The one realy soldily new and interesting bit of the game is Firefight, which it's probably worth getting for: it's fun, tactical and great entertainment for hours on end, my only complaint is perhaps that it starts way too slowly and is measured in such silly numbers: it doesn't exactly sound very cool to say ' i got to the end of set two', but that's acutaly quite an achievement. It's a fun game with a great atmosphere and very good voice acting. I managed a legendary single-player run through without much difficulty, which is probably not a point in its favor. It's hard to give the game a good rating because Halo, to me, is really made by multiplayer. It was fun, and I've played it on and off for achievements, but it's a game I'd consider selling back at some point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The actual game itself holds well on its own. As a downed ODST trooper, you spend the game moving around the city of New Mombasa, searching for your squad mates. The gameplay is as tight as a regular run of the mill HALO installment, and the story holds its own as well. This game doesn't come without its faults, however. The characters are shoddy, in terms of personality and actual physical design. When halo fans hear the term, ODST, the first image that comes to mind is a tatted-out, physically peaked killing machine. Basically a step below Spartans. However when you play through the different characters and their stories, you get the feeling that these squad mates are nothing more than goofy, hapless grunts. My second qualm came from the lack of Halo 2 tech. ODST takes place, in the halo timeline, in Halo 2, where brutes were only just making their appearance, elites were still the majority fighting force in the Halo 'verse. However you don't fight a single one in the campaign! Also, the assault rifle and chopper return, without the battle rifle. The entire campaign experience just felt like a Halo 3 recreation. Now, my main issue is my belief that the popularity of the package itself came majorly from the second disk, which contained the bonus Halo 3 multiplayer map packs and other miscellaneous content. If ODST had been an individual project, with all work focused on the game, without the halo 3 map pack, I believe it could've been a completely changed, for the better, superb game. Unfortunately, what with the inclusion of the map pack, in the end all ODST was was an extension that should have been something much bigger and grander than what it was made to be. Expand

  1. The bottom line here is that this is a nice little piece of Halo, and that anyone who has ever enjoyed Halo will probably enjoy this too. The only question is how much it is worth to you. As a full priced stand-alone game, its value is somewhat dubious.
  2. Not only an add-on! This is better than many of the main games! Next to the single player, you also get a great multiplayer mode. You just cannot do wrong if you buy this game!
  3. Halo 3: ODST is an excellent add-on campaign for Halo 3, and one which all Halo fans should own.
