There maybe some fun to be had with some of its gameplay but there are plenty of other better games out there that have both substance and are 'fun'. In the end the Gears series is just another game for the uncritically minded and sits on the big fat pile of games with crap stories and a missed opportunity. Expand

It's obvious that people are reviewing this game based purely on graphics, because they really are the only thing that sets Gears of War apart from countless other shooters. Granted, technically Gears is an amazing achievement, perhaps the best looking game ever made. The shooting is adequate, but really just boils down to ducking behind blocks and coming up to take a few shot. Rinse, repeat. Where Gears of War really faulters is in its creativity. With their high levels of detail, the enemies give the illusion of being well designed. However, what you really have is some standard looking aliens rendered a lot better. The same can be said for the weapons. The particle effects look amazing, but this is seriously one of the least inspired inventories I've ever seen in a game. The one original weapon (which is quite spectacular, if not particularly deep) is almost never useable. The environments are the only exception to the rule. They are what make the game feel epic even if it is just the same shallow, yet surprisingly satisfying shooting mechanics over and over again. Un-originality aside, what really ruins Gears of War is its embarrassing excuse for a story line and dialogue. How can Video Games be respected the general public when its high-profile releases sound like they're written by... well, programmers. If you care at all about dialogue, voice acting and a coherent plot, then just turn off the sound. It's funny that in the Making of DVD, the designers talk about immersion, yet its hard to become immersed a game where the characters you're meant to sympathize with sound like badly-written teenagers in a straight to TV movie. If I could give the developers one piece of advice, it would be to hire a scriptwriter. What's the point in spending so much time crafting a visual masterpiece and not making some effort to create memorable characters and situations? Perhaps if the single-player had lasted more than 5 hours (another disappointment, as so many people have been looking forward to this game for so long) then these flaws could have been overlooked, but if I'm going to spend 70 dollars on a 5 hour game, then it better have a hell of an impact. Despite my rant, Gears of War is by no means a bad game. It's just not the masterpiece that the reviewers claim. But at this point, the game industry is young, and can't yet distinguish between an all-around classic that contributes something new and a visually stunning (not mention over-hyped) game that steals surface concepts from better games to give the illusion of having depth. It's an alright game with decent action and storyline. However, I'm personally very tired of games that are formatted with a very straight forward and repetitive level which is capped off with a "beat the boss" format. They put a lot of effort into this game, and a lot of detail, but it has been way over-hyped. Primarily because of how gritty and cool it looks(I admit that at least). But tactical? Nah. Maybe if taking a dump is tactical for you.
In all fairness, I thought it was a cool game, and the 2nd one is much much better because of online and horde mode, but I'm surprised this franchise has gotten to where it is now. Did not see it coming.

Also it takes a million hits just to kill something in 1p mode it's really is annoying because you don't know what gun you want to use in the long run on them.

Checkpoints is long too to save the game is horridly to say the least MUST WAIT FOR A CHECKPOINT to kick in before you can save a game just like modern day games.

The driving was not good too in it you had to drive away from the black bat things I really can't remeber them so something like locast and then aim a light at them in the end I keept dieing over and over then the game put me in after it for some strange reason maybe a glitch or if you die too many times the game will pass you on the next part because frankly it was hard to do.

So yeah the game can be a bit unfair on you at times that's why I give it a 5 for half non a 10 because it's missing a lot of things I wanted in this game.

STORY: who cares you get to kill monsters ............................. OK fine you play as Doom Fenix chief guy who was court martialed for some reason ( the game never says) or dose any characterization besides the character designs and the fact that Dom and Marcus are good buddy's and watch each others backs , so yeah kill monsters save the world nut with plot holes , lots of plot holes , why was Marcus in jail ? why did only baried know they were at marcus's house , why did the resonator not work then in the same cut scene another character hacks something non chalantly making the entire mission pointless i donno and neither dose the game
    STory: 3/10

World building: the world is a little more realized than the story , enemy's interact with the world in believable ways , bats hate light and die from it , suicidy enemy's run at you and blow up , alien high honors guards , despite the locusts being neither bugs nor aliens the are a mole people that dig and have their own language and stuff it seems , but who cares what their society is or why they are trying to kill humans they are cannon fodder
    World building: 6/10

Graphics : the game is brown and black and dark its EDGY and that's how we liked our games back in 2006 but now i had a hard time even seeing straight , this game is ugly very ugly , the scale is also off , Marcus is huge and has huge armour yet everything is bigger than him so he can take cover , only models that are any good are the character models , even the guns are awkwardly sized and shaped but for 2006 the game looks OK just ok
    graphics 5/10

Gameplay : this is a hard one for me to judge the gameplay to me was really repetitive and generic but i know this game was the first to be repetitive and generic 3rd person shooter , it popularized the cover mechanic witch iv seen done before , maybe not this well but its been done before mostly in stealth action shooters, but this is much more fluid than that with halo influenced dual stick design and a more powerful engine . the shooting is ok i guess , the shot gun was a highlight as shotguns usually are in shooters , the automatics had about as much punch as a 12 year old bully's slingshot the sniper was very situational and the triple burst gun was just awful , revolver was fun and powerful and i used it the whole game as soon as i could , bolt gun was weird but useful at times , the chainsaw was easily the coolest and clunkiest part of the game , this game takes time to get good at witch i like. checkpoints where almost always before a cut scene of story bit so if you died you would have to listen to the same dialogue over and over again until it pissed you off so much you stopped dying , i bet the coop was fun as its constantly splitting you and a partner up going down different paths and the like , over all the gameplay was good , it was definitely designed by gamers and it shows
    Gameplay: 7/10

Sound design: voice acting was very good when a character speaks I believed what they were saying , gun sounds for the most part are good , shot gun again being the best , in 2006 there are some clever tricks , screams are louder than most other audio ( I hated this cause I was a playing late at night while every ones asleep but cant fault the game for that ) over all the audio quality was good
    Sound design : 7/10

Sure, it looks and sounds great, but that's only skin deep. The core cover mechanic is repetitive, cumbersome and unoriginal (you're basically playing Killswitch 2), the plot is terrible and the AI seems lobotomised. Ooooh, never seen that before. Plus there are lots of annoying things that ruin what could have been a pretty "solid" game. Like objects sticking to you as you run past. Lame physics on enemies with limbs flying around in all directions. Numerous disc read, collision and weapon bugs..Allied A.I. is just terrible! I remember bitching about dumb friendlies getting in your way as long ago as Half Life and these guys still haven't figured it out. And nobody seems to have noticed how weak the effects are. This is XBox 360 for god's sake it should be possible to do way better than this, I can't see any excuse for it. As far as overall presentation goes, the story and characters are just adolescent and the setting is pretty stupid too (why are there burnt out cars from the 80s lying about in a futuristic alien world?) The whole being knocked out or whatever concept is okay, except the part where actions done to you while on the ground can't be stopped. Online play is laggy and full of 12 year olds that scream about everything. Map design is either extremely simple and lazy or huge and unfocused, causing new players to get lost a lot. The one thing that makes this game not worth your time is the maneuvering system, which is an absolute joke. Whoever decided that the A button would be used for dashing and leaning against walls was a serious moron. It's not uncommon to end up stuck against multiple walls in a sticky situation because of the terrible control scheme. It's also during this that the camera reveals how bad it is and flies around like a rabid child. Online pros will stroke their e-penises and call you a noob if you complain about it, yet have a fit if it happens to them. The reloading system is a hassle and mostly makes you roll around like an idiot hoping you won't jam your weapon. Overall, the game's controls are what make this game unworthy of not only the price of an XBox 360, but of an Xbox Live subscription as well. At release, it had great multiplayer which was unfortunately full of bugs and connection issues. The only appeal this game has is the pretty (but dated) graphics and decent core gameplay and "decent" is generous.

Quel dommage !

Here they are all the same. In Halo there was variety of play style - large open fields, narrow corridors, solo and team play. Here it's all a grey mush of hide and fight in a ruined city. Also, in Halo you could have one shot kills with the right weapon and aim, or with the needler could blow up people. Here you just keep shooting aimlessly at a baddie until he eventually falls with no ability to really aim, and all the weapons are the same etc. But the worst thing (and this is fundamental IMHO) is that the locust baddies are IDENTICAL to your soldiers. Every battle I either killed my own men or was killed by a locust who I assumed was one of my men. It is such a frustrating awful game for that reason. It is also slow, cumbersome, slow, repetitive, slow, and has no story whatsoever. Did I mention it was slow? The whole game moves like it's stuck in treacle. The graphics are okay, but I personally preferred the near-future suburban setting and graphics of Half Life 2. Given the impossibility of differentiating between sides this game deserves a 0. But, that's not taking into account the game breaking bug that never got fixed: the save games. It isn't enough that the checkpoints are too far apart to begin with, it's impossible to know when the game saves exactly. Not only that, we (I played with a friend in split screen) constantly lost our save game, having to play the same section over and over again. We never finished the game but we did see the berserker a couple of times, maybe that gives you an indication how far we were in the game.

Gears of War did not stand the test of time and the only contributions it had to the industry were negative. First let me mention how this game got it's score of 3, it is one of the only games on the 360 with split screen co-op multiplayer and one of the best gaming experiences I have had was with Halo's co-op multiplayer playing split screen with a friend. Me and the same friend were overjoyed at the fact this would carry on into the new generation and had fun with Gears of War, but that joy would be short lived as the push for online began. This game seems to have been the start of the trend for what would become generic for this generation, a brown looking cover based shooter with a story based around massive men with no personalities, just huge guns. This game was fun the first time around but it inspired nothing and is easily forgotten about, I can't remember the story at all. The most over-rated game ever. The only thing good about it are the graphics, but that doesn't solely make the game amazing does it? Terrible.

Framerate is very poor when camera pans around in story sequences.

Good game, not great, I recomend renting it, but not buying it. I would normally give it a 7, but because of the overhype, and the insane fanboys spreading false info, I give it a 1.

To be honest I enjoyed the game...really I DID but then after my 6th go around it started to remind me of doom 3 and HL2. What really let me down is that the controls were hard to get used to and the AI sucked (not alot but enough to make me hate).

This game sucks. the story sucks, the game is incredibly easy becuse the enemies are all basicly the same. the worst part was the acual gameplay, which seems fun and inventive... for the first five minutes. Once youv'e played the first level, you might as well have beat the game.

The feeling i get from this is that, they could have done this by DLC. It feels like gears 1.5 instead of a full fledged, which is no bad thing because it's gears, but i feel as though i'm being ripped off by something that should have been a bit cheaper.
