Set in a dark but interesting world, with well thought-out game-mechanics in the form of the cover-system, sprint, melee, reload bonus etc, this is a good overall game.

A summary of the plot is that it is set 15 years after the events of E-Day when a horde of mysterious enemies called the Locust attacked the world which puts Humanity on the brink of extinction. You play as Marcus and to put it as simply as possible, you must defeat the Locust, or is it as simple as that?

It is one of the best, if not the best 3rd Person Shooters I've played. I can't think off the top of my head any game other than the sequels to really stand out any more than GOW, an important factor is the excellent cover system which is the main substance for the action in the game.

If you have never played Gears Of War and you want to get into a new series, than this is the perfect game for you.

I remember I played Gears for about 20 minutes and not enjoying it, I was wrong, the game is cool, it has an interesting plot, good characters, a gameplay frantic action, and not counting the final boss that is very insane (damn General Raam a very great pdf). It's a good game.

Played this not long after it came out and enjoyed the hell out of it. Every 3rd person game that came out after it copied and pasted it's cover mechanics. Great graphics atthe time and tight gunplay. Grumble all you want about the dick jokes, but gameplay trumps all and I happen to be the type of guy that enjoys a good fart from a distance.

Technically the game was astonishingly beautiful when it came out, really ahead of its time, but the lack of colours will still make you think that you're playing with a "sepia filter" that can be annoying by today standards, but really if I didn't know it I'd never guess the game is from 2006.

Concerning the gameplay once again when the game came out there was a lot of innovations (cover system, great IA) but its unpolished and by now we've see much better, the cover system doesn't respond perfectly every time, the enemies need way too much bullets and the feeling with the weapons is pretty much the same for each gun. Concerning the game design its pretty good and there is a nice rhythm between each situation .

But the big disappointment for this game it's its story beside being very short (6 hours top), it's pretty bad, the characters are bad-asses cliche with stupid dialogs, 0 backstory etc. And that's why the game didn't age well, the graphics are logically outdated, the gameplay is unpolished and a lot of other TPS (including Gears sequels) do better and the story is simply not an argument.

So if you're asking yourself if the game is worth a purchase today, the answer is still yes because you can find it pretty cheap and it's a good TPS so if you like the genre and want to try this famous title go for it. But if you're looking for a good story or only the best in the genre, you can find better.

If you’re like me and have never played a Gears of War game before its a third-person cover shooter with a strong emphasis on the cover. The reason why its a strong emphasis on the cover mechanic is because although Gears isn’t necessarily the first they popularized it. Almost every Third-Person shooter post Gears of War has a cover mechanic. This makes Gears of War one of the most influential games of all time.

This is a game that I think has aged very well. I have really enjoyed the shooting which feels tight, the cover mechanics work very well, the active reload is great and I wish more shooters would use that. I don’t know why that didn’t become popular. The story its self is okay and I look forward to playing 2 and 3 just so I can get to know the characters a little better.

I'll be frank, the game didn't age well. I admit it was revolutionary at it's time, but in 2019 it feels like most of the third person shooters. But it's not a bother, because I know it was one of the first ones, and it shows.

The story and the mechanics are simple. The gameplay it's quite repetitive, but it's somehow enjoyable enough to keep you going. Yeah, maybe I couldn't play more than one act per day, but this didn't diminish my enjoyment. I played on hard mode, and boy, they meant it at that time when you selected hard mode. 2 hours of my life were spent on the last boss, because instead of a tactical shooter, it was like a clos-call puzzle game for me. One missed bullet, and my chances of beating it were done for. It was simply madness, and I wouldn't recommend hard mode if you just want to pass through the game like butter, because not only the last boss was hard, but other areas felt like I was the only one of my team who wanted to finish them.
Speaking about teammates, they're simply retarded. I know the A.I. wasn't top notch in 2006, but I swear to you, on hard mode, they didn't make any difference. Their guns were basically shooting blanks, I bet the enemies would laugh for days in real life at what damage my teammates were dealing. They weren't funny, they were frustrating most of the times, and it lowered my emotional attachment to the characters, because I couldn't help myself but feel glad if one of these dimwits died.
But the characters, pushing aside the gameplay, are good, not extraordinary, but good enough. What made me say this is their pure synergy, the bromance visible in every cutscene. These guys are big guns wielding hulks. You can't help but feel badass throughout your entire play.
The world and lore is simple to understand. It had straightforward levels with little spaces to explore for collectibles and ammo supplies, but I would not advise exploration if you're not a completionist, because most areas are stale, and you would enjoy much more viewing the scenery and level design rather than seeking cog tags. If you want more details about the world, you can read the comics or simply play the other games, because they give you enough details for the main plots. That's what I very much enjoy about this game: everything about it is straight to the point, it focuses on every aspect which it presents and nails most of them. I can't say it's ambitious, but from what I've read on the web, for its time it was, so that's commendable too.
This is one of those games with cheesy one-liners, simple plot threads and characters, and satisfying gory gunplay. I couldn't take the stress for another playthrough, but I would say the first one is essential for a modern gamer. You can see everywhere how Gears of War was one of the pioneers of the genre, and although it has flaws, it convinced me to play the sequels, and it was absolutely worth it.

Hmm, yes excellent graphics - pretty linear gaming though, great sound, good (though over used) cover system, repetitive. Single player and co-op worth a rental, but on-line is no where as fullfilling as cod3. As a matter of fact on line in perfect dark zero is 5 times better. All in all disappointing, I expected something special, but it's nothing we've not seen before gameplay wise.

According to Games Master it is the best game they have ever seen. Well, seen is the strong defining word as it was probably the best game to look at around (upon release) but in terms of gameplay, certainly not. Very linear and scripted but to be fair i don't think it deserves to get anything lower than a 6.

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

For others (myself included), it was also a interesting and cool beginning for a franchise that could also deliver a fun campaign. I want to say that Gears of War had alot of problems (when looking to its sequels to see what improvements were needed and what was lost), but I enjoyed it as a potentially great game waiting to be unleashed when its sequel would come. I also want to say that I came late to the party years after release and through a party of competitive people, I grew a bit tired of the multiplayer despite it being the main selling point.

The issues Gears of War had was its campaign was too short and reused too many enemies and the plot was convoluted with questions that did not answer. Multiplayer wise, P2P servers made host have the best connection and truly could annihilate whole teams by themselves if they had enough skill to prove it. It was the biggest sin the game could commit and I do not agree with veterans and fans of this game that its fair. The game also ran at 30 FPS on consoles, while PC was 60 which makes combat far too slow and it was easy to become frustrated with the input lag and slowness that its why some consider its fanbase one of the most toxic at one point.

I want to say though that the game is still good. I love the violent bloody killing with the chainsaw Lancers, the reload active concept is very creative and a risk/reward system that works and the way co-op worked in the campaign was really fun for couch play. I do think a 7/10 means a game is good, but its potential is not fully realized and is lacking as a result. It would come to no surprise that the future titles (for the most part) improve on this and make it one of the Xbox flagships of modern day.

The first act of GOW is interesting. The enemy AI is smart and aggressive; squad mates handle themselves well, thus freeing you up to perform flanking manoeuvres; and the action is quick and bloody. But from then on it becomes a typically monotonous and disappointing FPS because of bland graphics and boring maps (vaguely reminiscent of NAMCO's Sniper Elite), cliched characters and dialog, and silly weapons (torquebow and bolo-grenades) and boss battles. It is these boss battles that make GOW no different from the average Shooter. If they had been left out, the game could have flowed smoothly from beginning to end and been made interesting and enjoyable enough to replay; it will quickly collect dust on my shelf. Also, active reloading is an annoying gimmick and the duck and cover system --- clearly borrowed from NAMCO's Kill.Switch --- has a few bugs in it that can frustrate even the best of players. The only thing that really keeps one going in this game are the achievement points and searching for COG Tags, but that is not enough to justify the $60 price tag. Certainly an overrated game. The biggest disappointment was the multiplayer. Max of 4 players per team. No classes. Everyone has same weapons. Cramped maps. Graphics - gray, gray, on top of more gray.

Yo this game is fun, to co-op is cool, the action is tight, so is the look but online sucks. There needs tobe a 4 player split screen and you will spend most of your time trying to get in to the same game along with your friends. Therefore please update your online cause it is really weak.

Great graphics but typically bland and unoriginal xbox gameplay.

Well here it is...the kingpin title weve all been waiting for...the game that influenced how much RAM was built into the 360...and universally considered critic-proof........unfortunatly I don't play by those rules! Gears of War starts well enough, youve got a slightly off the right shoulder third person camera, a cover system and lots of urban wasteland to fight big monster musclemen in and around...but then things get frustrating! Control pad action just isn't translated into onscreen response properly, the chainsaw on the end of your weapon has the idiotic design flaw of switching off if you take a hit...after a few stops & starts you just give up and shoot your would-be saw-ee...left with him riddled with holes instead of being cut in two pieces and you wondering why you bothered trying the saw in the first place...your characters "off & on" cover context always has him leaping out into dead mans land instead of ducking behind cover when you needed him not to the most...the "Avioding Krill" and "Leading Berserker" minigame mechanics feel so out of place and stupid...your teammates care little for their own safety...one time youre given 30 seconds to cross a courtyard filled with enemies to reach an APC or its game over...you might be able to cheese it and just roll & run your way there but had it been 1 minute instead it might have been acceptable...and the outdated and stale checkpoint system has you re-re-re-re-doing sections countless times just because one Theron Guard got lucky with his explodey bow shot. So overall you either love it or hate it..I hate it...the score is for workmanships sake as the game (where applicable) is built quite solidly! But unless your some knd of gaming genius youre going to find little fun in this game...and more anger than your could possibly imagine! Expand

Dissapointing and repetitive gameplay. I can tell you the next 6 hours of gameplay and 4 steps 1)press A to duck or hide 2) Shoot 3) run and hide again 4) Repeat

Single player - great, as long as you play it on Hardcore and then Insane. though replayabaility is limited as you are confined to fighting in tunnels and going from A to B. Co-op - this is perhaps where the longevity lies. This game has good visual display and satisfying animations and gore etc. - but i find it vastly inferior in it supposed strength - its "innovative" cover system and game play mechanics... The game is way to clunky, slow and generally unsatisfying - with the exception of the chainsaw, I will take COD4 over this any day.

Gears of war is a good game, but is, from its core flawed. The gameplay is basic but changes in the short 7 hour campaign to become varyed, such as riding a vehicle or sniping enemys out. This isn't a deep game and continues to give a basic story, half explaining the full story, and then ending on a cliff hanger. It has texture pop-in, and plenty of bugs. It looks to similar to UT:3, and has clearly taken huge amounts of ideas from the series. The technical side of this game is great, but is showcased in ways that try to show a limit of the hardware, instead of say Viva Pianata that has hugely origiunal charecters and artwork, all not meant to look real. All in all i hate this game but appreciate the unreal engine behind it all. Expand

Gears of War is a good game with fantastic action set-pieces and an almost creepy setting, with a human colonised world being destroyed by a ground-dwelling species known as the Locust. The multi-player aspect, I never really got into, as I was always outclassed and obliterated by other players. The ability to do co-op campaign takes this game from a 3/5 to a 3.5/5, and defeating the final boss with my mate on the hardest difficulty setting is easily my biggest achievement in gaming so far. GOW by no means is a bad game but is very very overrated i just can't find the masterpiece that everybody sees, the story is boring the game play is very repetitive the characters are plain, the only good thing are the graphics for a 2006 game off course.

I played this game in 2010, So I'm very late to the GOW party.
The graphics where very nice and had some moments of awe!
The characters are flat and boring, consisting of hey lets go here and shoot this mentality.
    Story was paper thin...
The game started and then it felt like it ended with out anything happening in terms of story progression.
GOW is a fast pace action movie that you control...

The hallmark of Gears' weapon design is the balance of powerful tools with critical, exploitable weaknesses, and it's executed with real finesse.

Each stage is memorable...They all combine for an unforgettable adventure through 36 hectic, desperate hours of a group of soldiers' lives...A visual and visceral masterpiece.
  3. If you're a graphics whore, you absolutely, positively need to pick this game up. To say that Gears of War features "next-gen graphics" is a gross understatement. It's got the most impressive graphics ever seen in a video game, and the stellar art direction only makes it more beautiful.
