The games more colorful palette of levels is beautiful and finally moves away from the dreary, dark shades of Gears 1 and 2. The multiplayer is the most addictive of the series, with dedicated servers that finally eliminated the dreaded host advantage. The new weapons like the Retro Lancer and the Digger are welcome new entries into the Gears weaponry. The controls are tight and there is less times where I have been stuck on cover. The story has the classic cheesy-ness that Gears is known for but also comes with some very emotional surprises that fans that followed all 3 games will truly appreciate. Horde mode is a even more addicting mode than it was in Gears 2. With tower defense strategy and boss modes, it is a whole new beast. Beast was also a nice addition. Being the Locust Horde is one of the best parts about this game. For any shooter fan this is a must buy but new comers be warned, Gears still has a tough learning curve. Expand

Horde Mode and Beast Mode- again, GREAT fun. In both you kill wave after wave of increasingly stronger enemies- and it is extremely addictive. Overall- Highly recommended and should be considered for GOTY. A must buy for Gears fans and a must try for all others.

This was an outstanding game. The single player campaign was very satisfying. The multiplayer, both co-op and pvp is a blast. It is good to see this game evolve and improve over the three releases as opposed to stagnate like the Medal of Honor and BF series. I love the 3rd person view and the weapons.

Gears of War 3 is the best game I own on my XBOX. That is definite. Since 2005, The Gears franchise has captivated my, and millions others imaginations. Although I had to wait till 2009 when I finally managed to get an XBOX 360 to play a Gears game, I had been avidly following them since they came out. Some may say that I'm a fanboy, but I am not. Although I had to wait till 2009 when I finally managed to get an XBOX 360 to play a Gears game, I had been avidly following them since they came out. Some may say that I'm a fanboy, but I am not. Thhis game is just perfect in almost all aspects. I'll explain the almost later on.

    STORY - 9--------------------------------------
Marcus Fenix and his beefed up friends are on the ship Sovereign, after the events of Gears of War 2 and the intervening novels. The story is very engaging in itself, and if you've read the novels, it'll be twice the fun. Key events and characters of the novels are introduced in the game, although the novels are still worth a read. Without giving too much away, I can say that there'll be a moment even more emotional than Dom and Maria's reunion in Gears 2. This 'moment' has been praised by many critics, and I'll side by them. It really emphasises that this is the last chapter in Marcus' story. Gears series veterans will get their fill, and although some questions still remain unanswered, it is still a blast.

    GAMEPLAY - 10----------------------------------
The gameplay is perfect. I mean perfect. Right off the bat I noticed the improved controls, and although there wasn't anything wrong with the near -perfect controls in Gears 2, Gears 3 pales them by comparison. The variety is amazing. After battling through the guts of a Riftworm and riding Brumaks and Reavers in Gears 2, I thought that there was nothing that could out-epic it. But Epic Games has made Gears 2 look like a pre-release demo. You'll drop tickers on huge a Lambent Leviathan, fly 'Gas Bags Airways', ride in 'Baird's Favourute Kind of Toy', kill a Lambent Beserker and much more in the campaign. The new Lambent enemies are a blast, literally. The combat is more fluid, and almost every fight has multiple approaches. This is the ultimate Third Person Shooter experience.

    GRAPHICS - 9.5----------------------------
Although not as good as the awesome Crysis 2, Gears is still one of the best looking XBOX games out there. The lighting engine has been improved tenfold. When you'll be slicing Locust in half with a chainsaw, and look at the world with your blood soaked eyes, you'll just want to stop and watch that perfect moment for an eternity. The level of chaos that the engine can handle has increased from Epic to Ultra-Epic. The FPS is usually solid, and is much better than Crysis 2, but can still slow down just for a second, although it isn't detrimental from gameplay. And of course, seeing someone's head blown to Kingdom Come just after you've squeezed the trigger on that Longshot, or them ggetting blown into pink mist after a One Shot shot, etcetera etcetera, never gets old. MULTIPLAYER - 8.5--------------------------------
I realize that most of the people reading this will be from US, or Europe, or from China, Japan or Singapore. And that those people will never have any problems with connection. But in India, Trying to get a game is a nightmare come to life. The only times I have connected, I've had more fun than I've ever had in my life, but spending more time reading 'no suitable matches found' than being in the action, is not my definition of fun, exactly. The new Beast mode is great, and split screen works great, and the new weapons are awesome. And chainsaw is still alive and slicing. But if you live in any place where gaming isn't a very big market, be prepared to play with bots. But then, the bots are really, really good. Insane Versus with bots is way too good, and the only reason this managed to scrape an 8. But otherwise, the multiplayer is 'the ace of diamonds' in my book.

    LASTING APPEAL - 9.5------------------------------------
The game has an excellent levelling system, with many ribbons and medals to be earned, mutators, characters, weapon executions (Shotgun golf, anybody?) and achievements to be unlocked. Insane difficulty is as tough as ever, perhaps even tougher, as the AI is much better, although how Epic always seems to improve upon 'Perfect' and make reviewers who gave their previous games full scores and said that this is the 'pinnacle of gaming' look like complete idiots, I don't know. And of course, there is Seriously 3.0, for the brave of heart.

    Overall-9.5---------------------------------------------
    | +Gameplay
    | +Graphics
    | +ACT III
    | +Epicness
    | -Connection problems

The game is awesome, and multiplayer problems left alone, perfect. Do yourself a favour, run out of your house, get a copy, run back home, put the disk in, and enjoy.

Good conclusion to a stellar storyline. Multiplayer still a bit lacking though. Nothing improved from previous attempts. 4 player co-op rocks, and horde mode still stands strong. Beast mode was not as fun as I hoped it would be though. Overall a pretty good game and worth the bucks for the single player alone.

Played with friends it is an absolute blast and the unlockables make it all worthwhile. The single player campaign also does what no other games dare, these days: it ends the story, and ties up the loose ends! The graphics are stunning for a game of this speed and fluidity. One other thing about Gears in general is that, somehow, boss battles don't feel like boss battles (well, General Raam excepted) and that, in itself, is a blessing. Those who don't like having the developer played play the game for them will undoubtedly crown this as game of the year. Nothing else can compare. Seriously. Expand

I can sum this up in one sentence.
    Gears of War 2+.
Bland and Repetitve. Overhyped due to being an exclusive to try and keep in the race with AAA titles such as U3. Brilliant game, just not a console seller by any stretch of the imagination.

Not a bad game at all, for me it's the graphics, and the gameplay, solid effort, their are a few little issues here that dampen the experience here within the multiplayer aspect that negates the score. There's so much content to be fully explored, accompanied with a ridiculous amount of time-consuming challenges and unlockables. As with all games, however, there is still a handful of disappointments, mainly with the campaign. Starting with the campaign, it is definitely the longest one in the series. This, however, is misleading, as there are many situations that are merely used as "filler" firefights, consisting of you killing endless amounts of locust/lambent for no apparent reason in the exact same fashion over and over again. They're entirely unnecessary, and are only implemented to extend the campaign's number of gameplay hours. I enjoy locust/lambent firefights as much as the next guy, but the pacing and sheer amount of them becomes tedious and repetitive quite often. Epic also did a poor job explaining many of the events following GoW2 but before GoW3, as well as some of the new characters. Supposedly these details were explained in comics that Epic released, but honestly, that's a little absurd to include vital information on a separate piece of media that a fan MIGHT read. Overall, the story of the campaign was very enjoyable, save for the conclusion. The conclusion winds up being an extremely cliche and "convenient" ending, leaving me slightly angry. However, it's still a somewhat fitting ending and it essentially leaves no room for another game. Epic could, however, make some DLC for one loose end during the campaign, but nothing more than DLC. I was very impressed with GoW3's improved graphics, and the new lighting effects are quite exceptional. The multiplayer is where most of us will be spending our time, whether it be Horde Mode or Versus. Beast Mode is a great little addition, but I don't see myself playing it more than necessary in order to unlock awards. If you were a serious Horde fan from GoW2, you won't be disappointed. "Horde 2.0", as Epic calls it, is chalk full of additional tweaks and challenges that dramatically extend the abundance of things to do. It's still obviously heavy on the core experience, but fantastic new features such as "Boss Waves" are a sheer blast to play. The Versus Mode has been tremendously improved, using dedicated servers to prevent lag and so that host no longer has god powers over the game. The online maps are much larger than in previous installments, and I dislike at least half of them, due to the weapon-hording/camping that goes on, but they still work most of the time. I still feel that the Sawed-Off Shotgun is far too noob-friendly, removing any skill involved with actually aiming a shotgun. Granted, they have to be relatively close to pull off a gib, but with the way the maps are set up, it's extremely easy. The game keeps track of a huge variety of statistics, which is something that I desperately desired in GoW2. Versus does have some matchmaking issues that should be somehow fixed. Getting into games is easy enough, but the servers are more worried about throwing you into the first game it finds, rather than balancing teams. You'll quite commonly be thrown into games where no one on your team, other than yourself, is even above level 40, whilst the opposing team has no one below the level of 70. And it's not just the initial game where they'll be unbalanced teams; even after that first game's completion, the game will still constantly stack one team and leave the other with Sawed-Off wielding scrubs who have no idea how to play. Keep in mind that this is an EXTREMELY frequent occurrence, so expect it to happen more often than not. The positive thing, is that this only occurs in Quick Match Versus, whereas Ranked Match games will wait until the game is balanced before starting. The negative thing, is that on average, about 30,000 people are playing Quick Match at most given times, whereas only 2500-3000 are on Ranked. If you don't mind waiting for several minutes for a game start and you want to avoid the aforementioned issue, I recommend Ranked. Overall, Gears of War 3 is essentially the whole package. It still easily remains one of the top 3 shooters on consoles, the others being Halo and Call of Duty. It stays true to what made the original famous, and tweaks it to become a top shooter. If you even have remotely enjoyed any Gears of War games in the past, you should definitely pick up a copy of this one. It is the best overall in the series, and even if you're new to the series, it's another fantastic shooter that stands out amongst the rest. Expand

Y el Silver-Back.

Last but not least the Multilayer which this time around is amazing and will keep somebody hooked for a month or two at least. New game types include TDM, Capture the leader (essentially guardian with a twist) and the random weekend playlists. all in all if you are a fan of gears and don't have it then get it now if you are looking for a game to play this should be on your list of options IMO Epic nailed this title with only a few flaws. GoW 3 reminds me why this is one of the best exclusives out there, and with a very generously priced seasons pass option, I can keep gaming at an affordable price with new content over the next year. I certainly hope this isn't the end-all title for Gears, as it's just getting better. Expand

Although featuring near identical game play to the previous Gears of War games, I will stand by the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy. In the previous installations it was simply about saving the world from a mysterious enemy, the Locust however in this finally, you will look more deeply into the lives of the team of soldiers that have survived this long, with some happy endings and well, lets just say, some not so happy. As I finally defeated the main boss and I watched the ending cinematic I was in awe at the revelation that had just unfolded and the amazing soundtrack just added to that fact. I would simply play the game all over again just to hear that soundtrack. Although I found Gears of War 2 harder to get into with the plot line and game play, I found that I had no problem getting into Gears of War 3. This makes it an excellent starting point for those new to the series but I would advice said people to play the previous two games first as the finally is a lot more shocking and awe worthy if you know all about the main characters and the people surrounding them. Multiplayer however I never got into, it was a bit frustrating with the Gears combat system, but it will depend on your taste. Horde however is the next best thing to the Campaign and I found me and my friends staying up late into the night fighting off endless amounts of Locust and Lambent while laughing as I was continuously downed by the Boomers. All in all definitely worth a weekend rent for the Campaign and to dabble in the online modes and if they fit to your liking, worth the purchase. Expand

I wouldn't have purchased this title if it was going to be the regular average campaign and multiplayer that interests you for a bit under a month that is becoming ever so common with 'triple A' titles as of late. With modes like Horde, Beast, Co-op Campaign and the ability to adjust campaign with 'skull' like options this is definitely value for money.

I am giving this title a 9 out of 10, it is a great game that has very polished and addictive multiplayer, a variety of buddy modes and a pretty lengthy and rad campaign!

At first the game looked as if it would be too much like gears of war 2 and would feel like and expansion onto the game, but I was wrong. The Campaign of this game felt a great bit longer than the ones before it and it also gave the played a diverse amount of situations one had to over come. The campaign of this game may have been the best of the gear of war games. Multiplayer, The Online Versus mode is fairly similar to gears of war 2, but with some important problems fixed. Gears of war 2 had problems with "Hosting" Were the person hosting the game would have a slight advantage because all other players were lagging behind them. In gears 3 they fixed that with dedicated servers. Also, in gears 2 the shotguns rained supreme, but in gears 3 they fixed it so assault rifles are just a efficient as the shotguns. The maps in this game are great, and they brought back a couple Gears 1 Maps. There are some faults though, There is a new shotgun in the game called the Sawed off shotgun. This Shotgun has a very minimal range and takes a good amount of time to reload, but it 1 shots nearly everytime. A player will hide around a corner and wait for people to pass by or get in front of him, this makes it extremely hard for other players to play and get around these situations and it will cause many more players to sit and hide/camp spawns and objectives. ( there is a 3 sec spawn protection though). Also there is an Assault rifle called the Retro lancer, I is alot like the regular lancer but instead of a chainsaw it has a Bayonet and does more damage with the loss of accuracy. The Player can charge people with the Bayonet and some how pop corners with it. If you are on one side of a corner and someone charges at you they might glitch through your bullets and stab you through a 3 ft thick wall, but other wise a great versus mode. They also have horde again, but with a little extra spice. They have added Barriers, Dummies, Turrents, Auto Turrent, and Self Controlled Batter robot suits called Silverbacks, and Every 10 round there is a boss fight which makes it challenging ( have to fight (Beserkers and Brumaks and stuff). They also have a new thing called Beast mode which alow you to play as many of the Locusts armys Soldiers ( Kantus, Scavenge drone) and as "Beasts" of the Locust ( Beserkers, Giant centipedes, Corpsers, and many others). This game mode is really fun, but is only 12 rounds long, would be alot better if it had more rounds. Overall a Great game, but not perfect. Expand

There is a cut scene of people opening and closing doors because I think perhaps it needs loading times between small portions of the game? I wish I could just walk down long corridors instead of cruddy cut scenes. Also, maybe that's done as well... I recall many rooms that were vacant... after awhile I ran until I came upon an enemy because I was used to not seeing enemies and getting tired of tirelessly walking. So instead of walking wondering what's ahead, I soon realized that nothing sneaks up on me and to simply run until enemies appear.

Cut scenes sometimes use in-game models... then some cut scenes have a purple tint because it's likely edited in AfterFX to add particle effects. The cut scenes look different in quality and kills the consistency. Also in the cut scenes that use the in-game engine elements such as tires of vehicles, trees, vegetation,,,, pop in and out.

The mechs you crawl into could have been better and maybe used more... also I wish could ride some of the beasts like you did in GOW2. This is something that would have elevated the gameplay. I love the idea of FPS and vehicles and I'm surprised there wasn't more of this... part 1 had a vehicle (that sucked I know), part 2 had beasts (only partially near the end) and this one had a mech... in which I barely used, plus I have yet to see the mech in the multiplayer (if it even exists).

The first 2 GOWs felt dark... this one is cheezy and I feel it killed the dark feeling of the predecessors. Some of the dialogue is beyond hokey and the queen comes off incredibly over-acted and gives it a less serious feel to it. The queens animations when she talks, her body language is incredibly exaggerated and ridiculous. Ice T makes an appearance and his dialogue is the only dialogue that sounds like he's swore before; whereas, other voice actors in the games drop the "F" bomb all the time and it sounds like they've rarely used it or felt uncomfortable using it. After half way through the game the "F" word and the "S" word are used so much it's gratuitous. Back to Ice T... after your first encounter it's him, the second encounter... I'm pretty sure it's a different voice actor... and either he has a cold or someone is a bad Ice T impersonator.

The multiplayer is much better than the previous 2 games. Some levels, if you turn quick (briefly) left or right... some structures in the game turn blue (like the edges) then it snaps it's texture back. I had fun in the multiplayer... but once you get good it's all run and shotgun... which will give you vertigo because of the constant movement to not get blown to pieces.

Basically it seems the game is trying to appeal to a broader audience and overdoing some stuff to appeal to the existing audience. The game is pretty and has some of the best special effects I've seen in a game. Sun rays, environment art, character design, explosions... best I've seen in a game.

The ending really sucked; whereas, in GOW2 I felt the gameplay near the end was fantastic. The story sucks in general, as most games do, but I wanted more of a grand finale action ending. Play it for sure, then sell it on Amazon when you're done.

I think its a great game to play in co-op but i didnt feel interested in playing the campaign again other than in arcade (another great adition). Horde mode 2.0 adds a new level of fun to it but yet again on your own its less fun more repetetive. The same with beast mode a great new addition but on your own its pretty boring, i think beast mode is the weakest link in the game as it has a max level of twelve you can reach which takes 15-20 mins whereas on horde you could be there for hours. Now onto mulitplayer, i need to say this... how is the sawn off shotgun n00by, please tell me. I love it, its a great way to kill someone, as you charge acroos the battlefield you blow people to peices. The gnasher on the other hand is the n00byer in my opinion, with more ammo a quicker reload, more range, more power at range, can also get one hit kills at close range its a far more n00bish weapon. the sawn off on the other hand has less ammo, awful range and the longest reload in the game but at around 2-3ft away from someone its a one hit kill. Now to tell you about the mltiplayer in whole, its great! better than BOPS, battlefield, crysis, homefront and any other multiplayer. The game modes are short and few but they are brilliant and the new servers and unlocks make it a must have. I was introduced to the series by my friend and as a gift he bought me Gears of War 2. I enjoyed it more than I expected, but it was still a lack luster game for me. However, I found myself excited for GOW3 in the weeks before release. The first thing I went to after picking it up, was Co-Op campaign with my friends. The story seemed to lack emotion at times, and when certain people died... I honestly wish I could have felt something, but I didn't. However, I found the boss battles VERY enjoyable, and the jokes funny. Of course the music was great, this franchise has some of the best songs I have ever heard. All in all, the campaign was great, even better with friends. But the real reason I bought Gears of War 3 was for the online multiplayer and Co-Op modes. Your standard multiplayer can be at times frustrating, with the sawed- off shotgun almost completely outclassing the Gnasher shotgun. However, it takes skill to win the games, which I always love. Sure you could camp behind a wall with your sawed-off shotgun, but thats nothing a few grenades can't flush out. Horde and Beast modes are each respectivly... how can I put this... AMAZINGLY AWSOME!!! Horde is always keeping me on my toes. One minute you are easily racking up kills on drones with your sniper, the next you are running for your life from acouple of Beserkers. Beast mode is probably more enjoyable for me though, as I can just run around the first few waves as a Ticker, blowing up everyone, then suddenly morph into a Beserker and destroy everything. GOW3 also has a multitude of fun Easter eggs that will have you and your friends laughing and running in terror at times. This is definetly going down as one of the best games I've played in a while. I've played co-op in the other Gears games for many, many hours, and the gameplay in Gears 3 is the best. The story is different. Early reviews said that Gears 3 wraps everything up nicely and beautifully. While it does wrap everything up, it does so hastily, and misses out on many opportunities to flesh out backstory or just general explanations.
However, I can't bring myself to give Gears 3 a lower rating because of the story just because it's so fun. I can remember so many different parts in the campaign that were totally freaking awesome and exciting. Gears 3 also features a horde mode, where waves of computer controlled enemies attack you and 4 of your friends. Horde mode is a great way to extend gameplay, because it distills the gameplay from the story, and lets you just shoot bad aliens, which is what Gears rocks at. If you didn't like the first two Gears, however, you certainly will not like Gears 3. The gameplay, while refined, boils down to the same cover based shooter it was 5 years ago. If you were a fan, you will be absolutely satisfied with Gears 3 for a very long time.

Anybody remember those carnivorous bird things and having to stay in the light to avoid them? What about how scary the first game was? It seems like Epic kind of let some of the more interesting story and gameplay ideas fall by the way side. It's still fun to play through the story but its definitely not the game's strong point. Horde and competitive multiplayer are where the value lay in this game. The new tower defense aspects of horde are a blast and as I said before, this GOW has the most balanced competitive multiplayer of all three. I've encountered far fewer instances where the people I'm playing with are so much better than me that I can't even touch them than in past GOW games. The game could have been better but it's pretty good as is. Multiplayer is better but story is worse. Expand

Instead, the AI serve as healers when you go down, since even on Insane difficulty you can still get revived. I found myself just sitting on the ground most of the time during the boss battles, just waiting to get revived by a bot. Getting downed instead of dying produces a very choppy run through. Also, the AI have choppy, stupid remarks about everything imaginable, and the cut scenes are even worse. They try to throw in some stupid relationships between the characters, too. There is no plot, just a never ending series of battles as you move from level to level. About the final boss battle.... just boring and long. Shoot it in the mouth, get behind cover, and repeat a billion times. And there is only 1 single checkpoint during the last battle. I ended up dying at the very very end when on Insane, and had to go back way to far every time.

Lambent are stupid and annoying. Just be warned. The only reason I give it a 5 was I like a lot of the new maps, graphics are great, and a lot of multiplayer action is fun.

Don't hate, Just post your opinions on the game below. First off id like to say MAJOR improvement from Gears 2. What you might of thought that was gears about gears 2 was just made 5 times better in this one. Starting of with Campaign.

*MINOR SPOILER ALERT* Just skip this part to see multiplayer. Won't spoil much but 1 or 2 might slip.
Campaign starts off with a bang as you start off on a ship where most of humanity has taken refuge and "safe". Throughout the campaign you will be placed in different character's shoes to tell their final story. Few main characters don't make it to the last cut scene i won't say who though. The story is told very well and a great ending to the gears story. The characters are believable and facial expressions tell the story in full. Best played with 4 player co-op but still fun to solo as well.
    *MULTIPLAYER*
The pace has been sped up a bit to find that mid point between Gears 1 and 2. Gameplay is fun and enjoyable. As you play each match you get rewarded ribbons and medals. Level up to unlock different Characters and Execute enemies with every weapon in the game. Minor pop in and out graphics but thats not the games fault its the unreal engines none the less graphics are beautiful from the beach to brutal battlefields in the forests. You won't be disappointed. Sawed off noobs might piss you off but hey every game has an over powered weapon.

    *BEAST and HORDE*.
Maybe the best and most fun part of the game that will keep you coming back for months to come especially with the dlc coming out next month and every 3 months following that for the next year. Grab some friends and kick some ass. The insane horde you knew from gears 2 has been upgraded with a more survival feel. Now you can build up a base with turrets and many more things to help you like decoys. You have to pay to buy mapped weapons and now every 10 waves is a random boss wave. I could play for hours on end. Beast is kinda the opposite. This time you play as the locust horde trying to kill the enemy CoG. For every kill on both modes you get money to either upgrade your fortifications or buy stronger beasts.

All in all well worth the 60 dollars and you won't be disappointed.
Perfect 10 out of 10. Definitely a game of the year contender. *Note i have both Ps3, Xbox, and gaming computer.*

Keeping it simple, Gears of War 3 has delivered as it was expected to. The best campaign in the series, better pacing in multiplayer, and a ton of content all-around; GoW3 deserves the praise.

In all seriousness, the game is more of a 9.5 than an actual 10 (the climax of the game is a bit underwhelming and Beast Mode's limited 12 waves still look like a prototype rather than a stand-alone feature). But this isn't a game that should be held to a score; it's meant to be enjoyed with buddies as you traverse Sera and find dozens of ways to mutilate Locust and Lambent.

I typically write long, raging reviews, but this time around I don't need to explain. Gears 3 isn't going to win over anyone who isn't already a fan of the series. But for those who have faithfully enjoyed the past two titles, you are once again rewarded with industry-leading visuals, tightly improved gameplay, and all of the re-playability that comes with this much content.

To sum my feelings up; Gears of War 3 makes the previous installment look like GoW 1.5. It's over the top, it's cheesy, and it has some deja-vu moments, but this game embodies a series that has defined this generation of gaming.

My main complaint however, is the campaign. I have never felt so alienated by a franchise title to which i have become a patron to. It seems like im playing GoW4 rather than GoW3, with all the unexplained, un-introduced new characters, (i assumed they were a bunch of "red shirts", but was sadly mistaken) setting and location not to mention the complete lack of locust. I heard that alot of this was explained in the 19 comic books that Epic released, but I feel that the finale of the franchise should not ride so heavily on cross-media. Without trying to spoil too much, I was greatly disappointed with the games conclusion, which seemed all too rushed and convenient. Im not saying that they should of killed off all of the characters, but I would of liked the game to stir some emotion rather than cliche in its closing hour.

For all those haters who be hating this game because of the multiplayer. I can justify. Let's compare the games, all of them. In Gears of War 1 everyone died to fast. It was like playing insane mode but on multiplayer. Let's bring it to Gears of War 2. The Lancer and Hammerburst were useless. Everyone ran around with a shotgun because that was seriously the only gun, besides the power weapons, that you could use to kill an enemy. Let's take it to Gears of War 3. With the addition of the Retro Lancer, the powerful but innacurate version of the Lancer. The Retro Lancer is perfect for mowing down that n00b who is running at you with his Sawed-off shotgun. Now here's where it goes slightly downhill. The Sawed-off Shotgun. The most complained about gun not only in the beta, but in the full game. Able to kill with one shot from chainsaw distance normally, and from slightly further with an active reloaded bullet. It may be the most n00bish weapon in the game, but there are also ways to combat it. Let's say you have your gnasher and you see a n00b run towards you with a Sawed-Off. Go for the down, it's better to just down the sucker than to have him get close enough to kill you. Gears Of War 3 may still have the shotgun essentials to it that Gears of War 2 did, but there is the addition of the primary assault rifles having a better shot at getting you a kill, and saving your life from that n00b with the Sawed-Off. I hope this conveys the utter genius of this game to those who are thinking about purchasing it. If you are thinking about purchasing it, get it. It won't be a waste of time. Expand

But there are signs here that Epic want to entice the casual gamer too. The campaign mode contains a short clip of the game's backstory to ground the uninitiated. It also offers a "casual" difficulty setting which allows players only interested in seeing how the story develops to breeze through its 10 to 12 hour-long campaign.

There are also a MASSIVE array of unlockables. Caracters, weapon skins and modifiers like big heads and insta-gib melee. The beast and horde mode are one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had. EVER (second to Borderlands). However, where there is good there is bad. This game can get repetitive, al lot in fact. Another thing is that this game doesn't have as many as those HOLY-CRAP moments like Gears 2 had. Gears 2 has you destroying a gaint worm by cutting it's heart's artaries. Gears 3 has you killing more lambet locusts. It just feels like gears 3 is going through the moments. And this feeling gets more strong later in the game. However these are very minor flaws, but great enough to only get a 9 intead of a 10. The single player also feels a bit cut-off. It feels like the devs spent more time on the multiplayer aspect intstead of the single-player. * Distasteful executions such as the 'curb stomp' which cater to teen bloodlust.

    * Enemies with no personality. They're really just cannon fodder in different shapes and sizes.

    In Horde Mode:
    * Selectable, glowing fortifications which totally destroy the sense of realism before each wave.

I saw some guy complaining that it isn't just a 'shotgun war' now, which, to me, means I'll probably actually like it. That's what I hated about the multi in the first two games.

Anyways I've played through the first act in the campaign and spent a good bit of time with the new horde mode and beast mode.

Horde2.0 is badass- they've added an RTS type element to it, where you build fortifications, turrets, etc, as well as boss waves which are pretty awesome too.

Beast mode is pretty cool, although it seems like once you get the berserker it's game over humans. It's definitely fun playing around with some of the monsters. Corpsers and bloodmounts are two of my faves.

Campaign so far is pretty good, although some of the dialogue is kinda terrible. The jokes aren't funny and there are a lot of them. So far, it seems to lack any of the tense moments from the previous games, although I admit that I'm only through the first act, so it is really hard to judge it accurately.

I currently have no internet connection, but I'm not missing the multiplayer. There is enough single player (or local co-op) content here to completely ignore the online play and have a good time.

I can understand that this may not be the game for everybody, but there's just no way this game deserves anything less than, say, a 6 or 7. Period.

    Hope you find this useful.

There is something that sets it apart from the other two. You can feel the dedication that Epic has put into this finale. Everything has been improved. The campaign, while never emotionally engaging, is fairly intriguing and supplies some twists I didn't see coming. This game's crown achievement, however, lies in its multiplayer. Everything is streamlined and works brilliantly. There was hardly a game where lag was a problem, and the constant unlocks have kept me addicted. Gears 3 isn't a radical change, but it never really needed it. Instead, Epic has opted to smooth over the wrinkles of the last two. Everything feels smooth and improved. I love, love, LOVE this game. What a pity that the game ended. It's **** Mega Epic! The best part of course! Though here and there was no riding at Brumak, but the game is epic. Shoot in the game much more fun than Gears 2. Very well, that did not hide the plot pieces, as usual.

Best in the trilogy, Epic has come a long way to refine the storytelling and diversify the gameplay from the original. Good stuff. The graphics impressed me almost as much as the original did a few years ago. Kudos.

I guess it feels like the same old game with a few new players...? Of course, I'm a firm believer in the "ain't broke don't fix it" mentality, so I'm not complaining. I avoid shooters like plague...but I dove straight into online play with this one, and I had a blast. I liked it so much I went out and bought it the next day...my first shooter purchase since N64...and no regrets at all.

The graphics are the biggest improvement. Oh my. The Unreal Engine is constantly getting updated, but this is the best I have seen in a long time. I was surprised to see them - these are the kinds of graphics I expect from a PC game. Couple that with new environments - not just underground and urban surroundings - and you get something that looks as good as it plays. The action, like I said, has remained mostly the same, although with new weapons and enemies so unless you didn't like the previous games, I doubt you will dislike this. I strongly recommend this game. A worthwhile purchase. Expand

Aside from single player, the online multiplayer is fantastic fun. I have already lost hours of my life with three other mates in Horde mode and versus. Though I do hope Epic tones down the sawn-off in a future update. All in all, an utterly excellent game and a fitting swan song to the trilogy. Bravo, Epic.

Although it doesn't leave the realm of the expected (much) or do much in ways of reinventing the franchise, it meets and even exceeds it's excessively high expectations. The campaign hasn't gone in any new directions, however, it goes much farther than any other gears of war title managed to in scope and polish; and that's just the first act of the game, and now offers 4-player coop and an arcade mode with competitive scoring and mutators (featuring old UT classics like "big head" and "instagib"). Multiplayer now features unlockable weapon skins, mutators, and characters to keep the elites interested and finally offers effective dedicated servers to ensure that someone's ping isn't the deciding factor of the match. Horde 2.0 is on a scale only dreamed of in the previous installment with the new currency system and boss waves which lead to massive battles against brumaks with the help of lumbering mechs and machine gun turrets. The new beast mode is short but impressively tactical, offering the wide diversity of locust abilities and tactics to the player in small, organized teams.

The updated unreal engine now utilizes deferred lighting and rendering and combines it with other new and impressive effects (such as a more detailed motion blur and volumetric sunrays and particles), and color is finally used as a powerful tool in atmosphere, much unlike the original Gears of War. This makes the game's impressive visuals stand out in what is possibly the most competitive time yet for the graphics industry.

What was the most impressive feature of the entire Gears package was the story. Epic studios has never been a studio with an emphasis on story and only recently has attempted to deliver it as part of a AAA game package. With the help of author Karyn Travis, the Gears 3 story and characters have a surprising layer of depth and atmosphere between the frantic fast paced gun fights. Characters are now far more diverse than testosterone laden men and far deeper qualities are evident or at least hinted at (depending on the character) throughout the campaign. Certain story pieces (which I will not spoil) have an impressive and respectable amount of detail. Musical and visual juxtaposition are used to the greatest effect and create moments that reduce even the rowdiest crowd of online players to complete silence. Although the story comes dangerously close to cliche at times, it steers clear just in the knick of time and has a great sense of novelty, and every component of the game comes together to create a very deep sense of the potent struggle of humans living cooperatively on the verge of death. Even the gameplay emphasizes this interdependence with the ability to share ammo and money.

Gears of War 3 is not an unexpected game, but it is surprising in it's potent and vast sense of teamwork throughout a multitude of well designed game modes. It's a very hard game to not recommend, but although it certainly is not flawless, it shines bright enough to be seen as a gem of a game in a time of near omnipresent, massacre-fatigue shooters and horror titles. Thanks to EPIC studios for defying the stereotypical notions that have smothered this game's reputation since the first with the best and most thoughtful Gears of War title to date. Anyone who bashes the game for story shortcomings or originality must be truly desensitized to the things that make a video game more than just a game. This was truly an unforgettable experience.

There are three main facets of Gears 3, the Campaign, Multiplayer, and Horde mode. Each of these game play modes is rich in providing a unique gaming experience. The ability to play cooperatively with your friends online or on the same television in any of these modes makes for incredible fun.

Horde mode has you fighting, with up to four teammates, waves of enemies that progressively get harder with each level. Horde mode was introduced in Gears of War 2 and many gamers believe it was the best feature of the entire game. Not resting on their laurels, Epic made numerous improvements to Horde mode in Gears 3. While it retains its familiarity in actual game play, the addition of purchasing items (you can purchase barriers, turrets, etc) adds a strategic element to the game. The more items you purchase allows for you to 'level up" and unlock greater items which makes you want to keep playing. In my opinion, Horde mode alone is worth the purchase price of Gears 3. A new addition to Gears of War 3 is Beast mode which is like horde mode, except you take on the role of the monsters. All of the monsters have unique attributes and play differently. My personal favorite is playing as the Berserker and smashing everything in sight. As fun as Beast mode is, I do not think it has enough substance to challenge the lasting appeal of Horde mode.

Multiplayer is numerous game modes that has your teammates and you fighting against other human, or optional bot, adversaries. This is the mode that typically is criticized the most because people complain about the other players, poor networking, unbalanced weapons, etc. It should be noted that if the masses have issues with Multiplayer gameplay, Epic has traditionally been quick to release a patch to resolve the issue. My experience with mutliplayer so far has been good. It is fun, especially when you have a squadron of your friends playing with you, but it is by no means perfect.

The campaign will provide you with 8-12 hours of solid entertainment. The story continues on a few years after the conclusion of Gears of War 2. It is possibly the weakest of all the story-lines but it manages to fill in the missing gaps from the previous games. The gameplay itself is excellent, and is even better with a group of buddies.

There are many other things that i could ramble on about Gears 3, but I think it is best that you experience it for yourself. Whether you are a Gears veteran, or new to the franchise, you will not be disappointed with Gears 3.
