As a whole, the game is simple, but still fun.

In the end, though, I give Spiders credit for their work on Faery: Legends of Avalon. If they maintain the quality music and dialogue from the game, improve the plot, and fix the controls and world maps, they'll have a decent game on their hands, worth the 1200 MS points. In that case, pick up the first episode of the series. Otherwise, your money is better spent elsewhere.

It's all about level design, and Faery shows some goodness. SHame for the lack of depth, and the sometimes small locations.

It's not perfect, but it is a great addition to the genre, and unparalleled on XBLA.

Overall, Faery: Legends of Avalon is a great attempt at bringing the RPG genre to the Xbox Live Arcade. Very few downloadable titles contain as much depth as this and, at 1200 Microsoft Points; this is certainly a game to purchase if you enjoyed the trial.

Faery is a solid fantasy role-playing game, but the short tale means it's not quite worth the 1200 Microsoft point price tag.

Simple concept but entertaining for RPG's beginners.

But between its quaint characters and charming attitude, it's still an entertaining enough way to while away a few afternoons in service to imaginary nobility. [Jan 2011, p.66]

Faery: Legends of Avalon isn't exactly a fairytale. The fact that you can make your own fairy is one of the few hightlights of this game. The campaign is simply too short and the audio and video are very mediocre.

Faery: Legends of Avalon is an interesting idea and it has a great story to tell with wonderful graphics. But in the end, there are to many technical problems so it never gets as entertaining as it could and should have been.

Still, Faery is commendable for being among the first foray of the core RPG genre in the downloadable space dominated by twin-stick shooters and bite-sized platformers.

The battles are rarely gripping and are so few and far between that you start getting bored waiting for something to actually happen.

Faery is really quite a bland game with an uninspired combat system and basic storyline. Still, it does serve its purpose as a nice bit of eye candy.

If you fancy the idea of an RPG-lite Brothers Grimm tribute act, then go right ahead. But if you can tolerate more than half an hour without wanting to eat your own earwax, you'll be doing better than I.

This little role-playing game is pretty--and pretty dull.

Do yourself a favor and get Costume Quest instead. [Issue#67, p.105]

Far from being a void attempt at the genre in digital form, Faery is charming thanks to its freshness and classic world revisiting the forgotten tales and legends. But it will will quickly show its limits to the RPG fans, because of its not-so-deep gameplay. Despite its limitations, Faery remains an interesting proposition, if you have already consumed all the must-have games of the downloadable offerings out there.

Between the wide variety of locales, the impressive bits of character customization, and the myriad choices both big and small, this game had lofty ambitions. Sadly, the game does very few things right – the poor design and garbled English make this a sloppy offering that isn't worth your time or money.

The music is beautiful and the artwork when viewing the credits as creative as the rest of the game. The turnbased combat was fun and a nice break from the more hard core shooter/slash games I also like to play. I did not mind my companions leveling up automatically. It was enough to take care of my own skill tree. I appreciate being able to customise my character as a female (yay!) and the creative metamorphosis process was cool. The worlds you visit are not expansive, but for a download RPG arcade game, I have no grumbles there. Hoping there will be DLC in the pipeline. Nice job, Spiders. I valued every point I spent to get your game and magical subtle messages well delivered. Full Review »

Faery is the very first game Spiders ever made and even to this day it's one of their best. It really shows off their talent for creatingFaery is the very first game Spiders ever made and even to this day it's one of their best. It really shows off their talent for creating imaginative worlds and unique gameplay mechanics. The whole thing is inspired by fairytales and comes with a lighthearted tone that's acceptable for all ages. You'll get to travel between four different locations and interact with a variety of magical creatures. Each setting is not only memorable because of their distinctive and well-realized themes, but also because you get to fly around them in full 3D, which makes exploring a blast.

The turn-based combat may not be difficult, but this RPG certainly isn't lacking in depth. For example, armor and weapons do more than just protect you from damage and increase your attack power. Each set ties into a certain playstyle by giving boosts to specific abilities. You can mix and match pieces to go for a more jack-of-all-trades approach or stick to one category and excel there while letting your party members pick up the slack in the other areas. You're given a lot of freedom to define what kind of fighter you want to be. Something that has become a staple of Spiders' games.

Your ability to shape the experience isn't just limited to there though. Player choice pops up in some unexpected ways. Of course you have the traditional big decision moments to make across the story that influence how the other characters view you, but you can also choose how you want to progress through main quests from a gameplay standpoint as they often give you two methods of completion. One usually combat focused and the other being exploration based. As you level up the skills you invest in will actually start to change your physical appearance. Depending on which abilities you pick, you could end up with a tail or a pair of horns. It's an interesting and original feature.

Despite being a budget downloadable title, length isn't really something the game really struggles with. You get about 8-10 hours of content for a pretty low price and there is some replay value. Where it does drop the ball though is with the ending. The conclusion is an abrupt cliffhanger that left me scratching my head until I did some research. It turns out this was originally meant to be the first entry in a larger series. However, it didn't sell well enough for the sequels to get made so the tale remains unfinished. A darn shame given how charming Faery is.

I would love Spiders to revisit this universe in the same way they did with Mars: War Logs. The world they created here is worthy of further exploration and I would jump at a second chance to put on some fairy wings and soar again. The French developer launched onto the scene with an authentic vision and created an enchanting standout from the fantasy RPG pack.

The game reminded me how I played this kind of games on older consoles. It is very similar to the console game of old times, in a good sense. After I passed it, decided to look at those who did it and if they have anything similar, but it turned out that the game came out already in 2010, although Steam has been written in 2014. I was surprised how good it is for 10 years, although I also decided for 14 years. Developers have tried over the characters of their variety, the costumes, did the leveling, combat system, and much more. I do not know what was the budget of the game, but it is clear that it is quite small, but the game pays off and even exceeds the game budget which exceeds the quality of the game and the developers who are on the head more talented. If you want to fly over the fairy and will be accelerated as the jet pack plunge into fantasy, silent world, to look at really nicely done and detailed characters, with its interesting combat and intricate quests of the game for you.
