Dreamcast Collection

The four games in this collection may not be the most famous out of the Dreamcast line-up, but they cover a broad field of game types. If you can overlook the awful main menu, you get a lot of good games for just a few bucks.

It's a decent collection if you've never owned the system, with plenty of Achievements and nostalgic value for everyone else. However, it could've been so much more. This isn't a dedicated gift, it's almost the equivalent of a mildly tasteful fruitcake.

Like I mentioned earlier, don't expect anything here in terms of features. This disc is truly just an excuse to sell these titles at retail.

Dreamcast Collection is a fun way to think about past times. The only drawback is that these are not the best games in Sega's portfolio and that not all of them aged really well.

After all these years, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5: Part 2 and SEGA Bass Fishing are still pretty good. It's a shame that some of the games have a lot of mistakes in them due to their old age. But for only 29,98 Euro you can buy yourself a piece of history.

The Dreamcast Collection makes us appreciate the previously released Mega Drive Collection all the more, though not to be scoffed at, it contains four of the Sega Dreamcast's classic titles, and is no doubt an essential purchase for Sega fans without Xbox Live access.

The lack of extras and choice of games makes this harder for me to recommend than I would like to. The fact that you get four reasonably good games in one package is nice, but knowing the size of these games there is no reason why between 6 and 8 games could not be included in a compilation.

There's also the point that you'll need to put the disc in every single time you play, whereas if you grab each game from the Marketplace, it sits on your hard drive and can be booted sans-disc.

If this is your only Dreamcast experience, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. [May 2011, p.93]

While it would be easy to slam this Collection due to all of its alterations and lack of optimization, the very fact that these games are on a disc instead of being lost to the digital download ether is a huge plus in its favor. If you still own a Dreamcast or have the means to get one (they're cheap and the games featured on this disc, aside from SC5:2, are even cheaper), this title is hardly the best option unless you're a fan of saving work and consolidating game collections.

Dreamcast fan would be honestly sad about this compilation, once again SEGA puts a couple of game released everywhere, lastly on XBLA and PSN, such as Sonic and Crazy Taxi. There are a lot of old SEGA IPs to rediscover but it seems that it's never going to happen.

Two great and two...not-so-great moments from SEGAs gaming history are included in this package. Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi surely worth the money, but it is clear that this collection was in need of some more well-known and loved games.

The disc's overall presentation values are terrible but this is currently the only way to play Sega Bass Fishing and Space Channel 5: Part 2 on your 360.

Though the compilation's $30 price is alluring, gamers' found memories would probably serve them just as well. [May 2011, p.79]

Dreamcast Sampler would have been a more apt title. After putting together the wonderful Ultimate Genesis Collection and the stellar Sega Ages line, it's hard not to feel like Sega dropped the ball with Dreamcast Collection.

The lack of actual Dreamcast versions, the utterly pointless inclusion of Sega Bass Fishing, the nonexistent nostalgic extras and the lack of effort in presentation all make Dreamcast Collection an unfaithful representation of the glorious Dreamcast era.

The fact this is the best SEGA can come up with after years of waiting for Dreamcast re-releases does not say much for the publisher's ability to evaluate the worth of its own back catalogue.

At the current price, this is a horrendous deal. [Issue#70, p.92]

Simply grab them each separately (preferably when they each appear in the inevitable sale), and your life will be a whole lot more fulfilled.

A weird and over-priced collection with a strange selection of "classics". Nothing has been done to polish the games up, either.

Although the quality of at least three of the four games included is unquestionable, the Dreamcast Collection suffers from the lack of a real optimization, especially from a technical standpoint, that disfigures in comparison with many other recent remakes.

Where's Jet Grind Radio or House of the Dead 2? Where's Phantasy Star Online or Virtual On? Sonic Adventure is not the best the Dreamcast had to offer, not by a long shot.

A really sad collection that's just trying to milk money out of the Dreamcast brand and nostalgia.

Dreamcast Collection is an odd hodge-podge of games. Sonic Adventure is nearly unplayable, while Sega Bass Fishing is simply boring. The remaining games, Space Channel 5: Part 2 and Crazy Taxi, are not strong enough elevate this collection by themselves.

A really small collection without any of the greatest Dreamcast Games. Space Channel 5: Part 2 and Crazy Taxi may be interesting if you haven't played them before (or the far superior sequels to Crazy Taxi). But they good games are cheaper to buy via Xbox Live Arcade directly instead.

Overall, the Dreamcast Collection is best left to the bargain bins and flea markets. While it is enjoyable to go down memory lane one last time, this Dreamcast Collection is anything but a definitive Dreamcast Collection.

A lazy, irritating, muddled mess of a package. Despite a degree of enjoyment to be found in the serene arena of Sega Bass Fishing, none of the four games on offer have any right being here.
