Games Master UKSep 18, 2013Superb remake that recaptures the original's magic while adding new twists to classic ideas. [Nov 2013, p.70]
-
Sep 9, 2013Castle of Illusion does a commendable job of feeling both modern and old-fashioned at the same time.
-
Sep 5, 2013If you are (like me) a fan of the Genesis original this is more than a trip down memory lane. This is a carefully modernized old school platform adventure with a lot of personality. But don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.
-
Sep 3, 2013Quite simply, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is one of the best platformers Sega has put out in years.
-
Sep 3, 2013Even if you don’t harbor the slightest hint of nostalgia for the original, Castle of Illusion offers up a great experience. It’s a fun update to yesteryear’s classic, but also a solid platformer in its own right.
-
Sep 3, 2013Castle of Illusion is blessed with a magic that transcends licensing, and 20 years after its initial release, it's still a damn fine platformer.
-
Sep 10, 2013The brushed up version of this classic looks really nice, but doesn't offer much challenge. The controls feel a bit slow and it's not a really long game either. Still, you'll enjoy the game a lot while it lasts.
-
Sep 9, 2013Castle of Illusion is not only a revival of the old episode, but puts some interesting news that gives personality to the production.
-
CD-ActionOct 16, 2013One of the best platformers published this year, beautiful and varied, but it’s a shame that it ends after just two hours. [11/2013, p.70]
-
Sep 30, 2013Castle of Illusion is a beautiful game in imagery and sound yet we are left with some control issues that need some fine tuning and maybe a couple more options to make it a tad more robust. All in all Castle of Illusion is a solid game that Disney fans and those who might be looking for their next platforming fix will enjoy.
-
Sep 6, 2013It's a great visual upgrade that remains the playable foundations almost untouched, but feels quite easy and short. However, if you enjoyed the original, it should feel like a great experience.
-
Sep 5, 2013The controls do need some work, but while Castle of Illusion is high on mechanical problems, it's even higher on whimsy. It's too charming to dislike.
-
Sep 5, 2013Good (but not perfect) port and reinterpretation of one of those gems found on the Mega Drive (Genesis) game console.
-
Sep 4, 2013It's a short and very solid piece of jump and run entertainment, combining a pretty homage to the genre and its own forebear with loving nods to later games in platform history.
-
Sep 3, 2013It's less about what you do, and more about where you are. Though they've substituted platform hops for page flips, the developers have crafted a Disney-quality world worth revisiting.
-
Sep 3, 2013It takes cues from its source material but isn't chained down, unwilling to tweak the gameplay or toy with expectations. It's the best kind of remake — one that stands on its own as a good game with or without admiration for the original.
-
Sep 3, 2013It ends up feeling formulaic by modern standards.
-
Sep 3, 2013An enjoyable, polished, satisfying game. It may only be a few hours long, but it's worth a tenner. It's perfect for those afternoons when all you want to do is close the curtains and collect rainbow gems while listening to some nice music. Just don't expect to remember the experience in 23 years. Or indeed next Tuesday.
-
Sep 3, 2013As a remake, it’s a decent attempt. On its own merits though, it’s somewhat insubstantial, and pitting it against the cartoon masterpiece that is Rayman Legends is less a fight than a curb-stomp battle.
-
Sep 5, 2013Castle of Illusion is not the same than twenty years ago. Has some improvements like 3D platforms events or magic visuals, but is also so irregular in level design, poor in content and with some issues in Mickey's control.
-
Sep 5, 2013Castle of Illusion is a welcomed change to the original remake formula, but it falls short in a number of areas.
-
Sep 4, 2013This remake of Castle of Illusion leaves us with mixed feelings. The game suffers from poor jump mechanics (which is a shame in a platformer, right), but offers on another hand a superb atmosphere, faithful to the original but with good additions in every levels... Are you nostalgic enough to really enjoy it?
-
games(TM)Oct 23, 2013With such base-level functional inadequacies, this retro rehash comes labelled predictably with a 'for fans only' tag. [Issue#140, p.117]
-
Official Xbox Magazine UKOct 9, 2013As much fun as you'd expect from vermin. [Nov 2013, p.96]
-
Sep 3, 2013Another retro platformer that doesn’t deserve such lavish new presentation, where everything has been improved apart from the gameplay.
-
Sep 3, 2013A lot of care and attention has gone into recreating the Mega Drive original's stages for a new generation, and the structure has been changed akin to Super Mario 64's hub world. But the platforming and control mechanics on offer here wouldn't cut it in any era.
