It's likely that nobody is going to read this, but I don't really care. That's not the point of writing this particular review. In a way, it's more a little online tribute to something that moved me in an unexpected and powerful way - ever since playing Deadly Premonition for the first time, I have found nothing that fills the void it left behind. Watch out, this is about to get painfully sentimental.
There is something magical about this title. It's not something that boils down to a simple detail, and it's not due to the many influences it has clearly pulled from. Sure, there are elements of everything here (Shenmue, Twin Peaks, Silent Hill, etc.) but never does this game come across as overly derivative. Every aspect is, in itself, something special. The initially awful driving smooths out quickly, providing opportunities for protagonist York to converse with others/himself; absurd side missions develop into captivating stories, deepening the colorful cast; a food/sleep system that would otherwise prove insanely annoying is implemented in a way that is effective, gaining a sort of bond between payer and character.
To get this out of the way now, it should be stated plainly - all first impressions are terrible here. The graphics are very dated, the voice acting is initially hammy and awkward, and the plot is all over the place. However, not one of these things become a detractor over time. If you allow this game attention beyond the prologue segments, it will evolve into something far more sincere than is first expected. The characters blossom into thoughtful, unique people (with an immediate improvement in their vocal deliveries), and the writing is unlike anything I've seen before. Even Twin Peaks doesn't possess this level of absurdity juxtaposed with earnest, emotional storytelling (sorry, David Lynch).
When I reached the end of Deadly Premonition, I was exhausted of all feeling. Something I first perceived to be "so bad it's good" became "so good it's great," right before my eyes. Though it begins somewhere along the lines of "B movie with ridiculous premise," it ends with an impact more often reserved for independent dramas. Without spoiling anything, there are multiple points where you will be blind-sided by an emotional revelation, seemingly sprung from nowhere in the middle of what began as arbitrary conversation. Though some central plot points are fairly predictable, nothing prepares the player for how invested they will become in the minor back-stories and character relationships.
Nothing is as honest as Deadly Premonition, as simultaneously unwatchable and beautiful, as fearless and as original. Nothing has yet dared to compete with what it does correctly, and I feel that nothing ever will. Confidently, I can state that this is my favorite videogame of all time - I never thought I would be saying that, but there it is.
Sorry, this went on way longer than it should have.
Just buy it, if you haven't already.

When I played the game for the first time I thought laughable, of course it is supposed to be ironic, the dialogues, the script, but what really left me discussed with this game is the terrible gameplay and horrific graphics... Some level design choices are worst than some play station 1 games... and I'm not pushing it! The whole game is laughable, but it is not laughable like evil dead when the movie is entirely ironic. This game tries to be serious at some points and that, I'm sorry, didn't bite me. Catherine is a surrealistic eccentric experience much more better!

But deadly premonition is along with hell's vengeance one of the worst titles if not the worst title I played on my 360. I actually didn't like to be messed with my mind when I was actually just looking for gameplay fun! And this game doesn't deliver!

A few select tracks are used maybe a little too often, but the music perfectly fits the odd tone of the game, and is pretty damn catchy. Even as I am writing this review, I find myself humming a few of its tunes. This is a case where the soundtrack isn't just good, but is a big part of this game. I am convinced the game may not have been as well received by as many if it didn't have this off-kilter soundtrack that really gets you into the mood for the oddness the game throws at you.

The next thing I and about anyone else will notice is that this game looks dated. It's something of a miracle that a game in this graphical condition was released as a published disk-based console title in this day and age. It looks dated, but then controversially I would say the look fits the game. It sort of sets you into a set of expectations for the sort of game you're about to play. This may be backwards logic, but if the game had looked amazing I feel a lot of people would of found the actuality of the game to be lackluster to its looks. And as the game goes on, the odd facial expressions and clunky animations become very amusing. Notably, the Director's Cut does update the graphics some, but honestly its hardly noticeable.

The rest rolls from there. The controls are a bit awkward, but you adjust. The first chapter isn't all that great, but it gets better. And before you know it, you start getting hooked into the game. I know I did. And it's the type of game you want to talk about.

Heavily inspired by Twin Peaks (to a point in development the game got in legal trouble for far too many similarities that they had to change it, back when the game was known as Rainy Woods), the story follows the same basic premise; An FBI agent goes to investigate the homicide of a local high school beauty in a small pacific-northwestern town, but the town has a darker side the FBI agent discovers as he gets deeper into the case. The town is Greenvale, and our character in Deadly Premonition is Agent Francis York Morgan (but just call him York, that's what everybody calls him), an offbeat FBI agent who solves cases through odd measures, particularly of note in the fact he uses a system he calls profiling (that basically results to magic to figure out what happened by collecting clues), and see's shapes and messages in his morning coffee and newspaper that gives him clues to things to investigate. He also talks regularly to some unseen person named Zach. Many will quickly put together that 'Zach' is actually York's way of talking to the player, who only he seems to realize is watching everything, and who only he interacts with.

Deadly Premonition has unforgettable characters. York stands out, as the player really begins to form a connection with their odd agent, but the rest of the cast are just as good. The likes of Emily, George, Thomas, Mr. Stewart, Polly, and the rest of the colorful cast will last with you long after the game has been completed. And the story legitimately begins to get gripping. Like the rest of the game, Deadly Premonition tells an odd tale, and honestly some of what occurs in the game is absolutely ridiculous, but somehow you'll legitimately care what's going on. That is when you're not laughing your ♥♥♥ off, as the game is somehow both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious at the same time.

But it's more than just that, this game manages to actually be touching, and I found myself more emotionally involved with this game's story and characters than most any other game I've played in the last few years. And while I don't want to get ahead of myself, the last few hours of the game's story are unforgettable. Saying bye to York and the rest of Greenvale is up there as one of the hardest things I had to do as a gamer.

Deadly Premonition is not just, 'so bad it's good' (though definitely parts of the game are just that). The game does some things absolutely wonderfully, really stellar and uniquely. But it does other things terribly, absolutely horribly. It has flaws, a lot of them. But somehow most of these flaws become strangely part of the whole experience. They sort of blend in with everything else and become part of the overall experience of Deadly Premonition. Not everyone will like Deadly Premonition, but the title since I've played it has taken on a fairly big cult following, for good reason.

Deadly Premonition is more than the sum of its parts. It is an experience that can be absolutely despised or adored, but no other game will make you smile as much as DP does.

As you progress the story you begin to get used to the game, you realize there's something very special about this obscure video game. The game itself is a mix of humor, and horror, and also is just weird at the same time. Honestly, there's no game out there like it. I believe this game is a true art, it's how a game really should be. The story is the best quality about the game, and that's the main reason people gave this a shot. There are so many twist, and turns you don't know what to expect. The graphics are pretty disappointing for the time it came out, could've improved on that spectrum. Storyline is absolutely spot on. Soundtracks/Music for the game is decent, but can be annoying because pretty much half of the time during dialogue a random soundtrack comes up, and doesn't even match the mood of the situation, and can be too loud to hear the character speaking haha. Truth of the matter is you will either love it, or hate it. It's a game you gotta get used too. It's a one of a kind game really, never played any game like it. Very bizarre, good story, humorous, and brilliant all in one. I would definitely give this a shot next time you come across this game! Expand

But it's definitely worth experiencing. A total Twin Peaks rip off, it heavily nods towards the series and also other such murder based media such as The Shining, yet it still remains fresh and original enough to keep you interested.

What makes the game is how it draws you in. There's 27 chapters, but the first 20 or so are
superbly crafted in terms of atmosphere and setup. You get sucked in to this wonderful world
and, if you can allow yourself to bare with the game mechanics, feel part of this community as
    your investigation proceeds.

However, those mechanics and the game designed can be a pain to live with. To be honest, the
combat isn't as bad as people make out and it can often be fun, what is bad though is the
repetitiveness of it all and towards the last 5 chapters it just becomes very, very tedious.

But the way the game plays with light and shade, the humour and lightheardedness which feel very
60's sitcom-esq suddenly interupted by the grizzly shenanigans of twistedness such as murder
or child abuse etc. just works superbly.

It's a hard grind to finish, and I did leave feeling a bit unsatisfied with some of the characters being underdeveloped and an ending not to my taste, but it was still a great experience overall, and even if you only play the first 3/4's it's a must-experience game for me.

If you're able to have some patience and look through the sloppy graphics and repetitive sound effects you'll experience an great and unique game. I agree that if this would've came out ten years ago, it would've been respected a lot more. Just give it a chance. If not, don't give it a 1 or judge it by just its looks. Expand

Just incredible! one of the best games of this generation. Imagine if it´s incredible that even the poor controls, poor graphics can not eclipse the fantastic of the game. This is a game full of charisma.

This game should be bad, everything about it from the get go looks like its a poor ps2 game ported onto the 360. However if you can look past the graphical style you will be pleasantly surprised with what i would consider one of the best games this generation. The game has a charm like no other and Agent York is in my opinion one of the best Video game characters to date. While borderline unusable controls, hideously outdated graphics and often repetitive gameplay should be the death knell of any current gen title, Deadly Premonition has an almost indefinable something that makes it a must play despite its failings. The story also borderlines on the ridiculous but it's in there that you find the charm, I actually "cared" about the people in the game, what became of them and once the story was told, I had that sense of loss that comes at the end of a good book, a response I've seldom, if ever, had to a game.

A unique experience, certainly not one that's going to be enjoyed by all.

It's a shame that so many gamers will never even hear about FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan and the Raincoat Killer, because the game has so much to offer.

Deadly Premonition is the unlikely meeting of Shenmue, Silent Hill and GTA, in a Twin Peaks setting... An unexpected mix that comes bundled with awful visuals and terribly old-school gameplay, but remains full of interesting things to discover. It mesmerizes the player thanks to a strange atmosphere, a compelling story, a cast of weird but terribly consistent characters, and a solid storytelling... In short, this is a unique gaming experience that will be be rewarding to players who can actually... endure it! See for yourself if you're ready to dismiss big (big) gameplay and visual shortcomings, to eventually discover a little shiny treasure... The cheap price (25 euros) may help you take that risk.

You may love or hate Deadly Premonition and its pure heart hidden beneath errors, strange structure and PlayStation 2 graphics. Don't get fooled by the outside, there are plenty of good things hidden beneath this rough surface.
