Although I have tried CoD games in the past, this was the first one I was looking forward to playing. Since I didn't play MW2, my low rating isn't based on other players' complaints about rehashed content. My complaint is that the game is simply frustratingly unplayable in Multiplayer.

There seems to be no real reason why what happens on my screen, and what I see in people's kill cams are so different. Many times, I will spot a soldier first, put over half of my clip into him, then he will turn around and kill me. Then, when I watch his kill cam, it shows him firing on my before I have even turned to aim at him.

That is horribly unacceptable in a game that's been using the same engine for awhile now. This game should be water tight, but it is not. It is frustrating and I'm enraged that I wasted 60 USD on this.

The weapon sound effects are the same, rank up sounds same, kill streak menus the same and the main menu is also exactly the same as Modern Warfare 2. Graphics have barley had a tune up. Thing don't look better just more glossy. As if everything in the world of Call of Duty is colored with Candy paint. The Campaign was a let down as well, I expected an epic climax to the story instead i got lead down a straight path to at the end, push keys it told me to, and with such dated graphics it just looks so cheesy. Theres no variety to multiplayer either. Basically its every man for himself. Everyone run around like chickens with their heads cut off. In my opinion this game also takes no skill to play. The weapons significantly lack recoil making it very, very easy to aim and by aim i mean spray rounds everywhere because you wont be bumped off target. Not worth 60 dollars, hell not worth 20 dollars. I'm no fanboy, just a very disappointed gamer. Expand

People are comparing MW3 to MW2, and they are wrong. It is actually closer to Black Ops, but with modern weapons and kill streaks. The story mode has stunning graphics and was awesome, yet short. The maps were made to help eliminate "camping". Which it actually didn't. It made it SO much worse.
I stopped playing Black Ops for same three reasons I have dissappointingly found now in MW3: One, the graphics were subpar to Modern Warfare 2. I realize the setting was of course during the "Cold War"- Vietnam Era. But when you've playing MW 2, Black Ops is really second rate. Two, the non-stop camping. The maps created an environment completely tailor made for people to hide behind barrels and crates, hide in corners, lay on the ground down hallways; things that are truly irritating to people who can actually shoot. Two- thirds of every kill cam I observe is someone hiding behind something, already aiming down sight, and waiting for someone to run by unsuspectedly. Things of this nature rarely occured in MW2 because the maps were wider open, and with less obstacles to hide behind, making the game much more enjoyable for EVERYONE. The maps on MW3 completely represent the same exact problem in Black Ops. So whomever designed these maps with LESS camping in mind, COMPLETELY dropped the ball and obviously doesn't play the game enough to know what "camping" is. And third, the internal problems that are NEVER really addressed; hacking and glitching. I have spawned in front of 3 of the opposing team. I have had 3 of the opposing team spawn in front of me. WTH?! I have knifed someone who has disppeared, and actually knifed me from behind. ??? I have emptied a magazine into someone and not get a hit marker, but knifed them after the fact and kill them. WOW. And now, there are already people with " L2+R2+L2+R2" clan tags, already modding the game? WOW. Really? So overall, the series is no longer fun for me. I waited a year to play a newer version of Black Ops, when I could have purchased Battlefield 3 and tried EA's series out. I do not see Infinity Ward's work in MW3 at all. It looks as if Activision just purchased their logo to put on the game. I will defintely not anticipate any other installment of thr COD series, and be VERY cautious of my next purchase. I read that COD game designers are concerned at their poor reviews and are blaming competitors dilluting the actual opinion. Here is a message for Activision: I am not working for your competitior. Your game is almost unplayable in multi-player (ask anyone about the campfest you've created) and glitches mercilessly. Listen to your fans and stop making excuses on your poor ratings. Your game blows.

I should have simply kept Modern Warfare 2 (I would have if the game wouldn't have been so broken and made me so angry that I decided to trade it in [did I tell you yet that all of the same problems from Mw2 are in MW3???]. I could have had the SAME EXACT experience with it or Black Ops without spending another 60 dollars (not counting the elite pack, and the new DLC which is sure to follow...and weren't they talking about charging players a monthly fee? lol yeah good luck with that now infinity ward).

This game (along with a few other recent games released for the 360) has actually done me a favor: other than losing the initial money paid for buying these re-hashed cash cows, these games have convinced me that buying these games at full price is the easiest way for me to waste my money in these current tough times. I'm NEVER buying a game at initial release ever again. I should have already learned my lesson from some of the other big name games released lately that re-hashed the same product with a new name and new plastic enveloping the case.

Peer-to-peer connection is absolutely revolting, particularly in a First-Person-Shooter (FPS) leaving someone with a disadvantage in 99% of the games in which I play. FPS were never designed to be played with such considerable amounts of lag. Someone will kill you, and while in your character's eyes you emptied 10 rounds into the enemy, in their eyes you didn't even fire a shot....

    ..simply unacceptable.

There is simply too little innovation in the game to warrant it being a new release. This may have been a financial success for the creators but I can assure you that they will not be as lucky next time (probably a year from now hah) around. I don't know what all of these reviews will do for the popularity of the franchise, but I can promise you that players will not be quite as apt to rush out and buy the next piece of half-developed product. I know that I won't.

Noticing i was consistently running 3 bars in every lobby I made the decision to upgrade my internet to further enjoy my gaming experience...big mistake. I don't fully understand the lag compensation deal but I consider myself a above-average player and find myself losing run and gun confrontations by milliseconds to most players forcing me to camp. Kill-streaks are damn near impossible under these conditions and getting rocked in most lobbies barely breaking even kinda sucks, I recently bought Battlefield 3 and have experienced no issues connection wise (vehicles suck but a point needs to be made). If they don't release an update fixing this lag comp bull soon I'm not sure if I will bother playing it again after investing in most of their releases, buying elite, all previous map packs, and upgrading my internet. There are no dedicated servers, cheaters and lag abounds, and if my sticky reticule pops to one more enemy automatically I think I'm going to ceremoniously burn this game. There is no reason on the PC to make the game aim for the player.

Multiplayer has literally not advanced at all. Graphics are poor, the engine is out of date. There's nothing but lag, cheaters, and kids whining and screaming over their microphones every time they die. There are no new modes, and no unique guns. You get to choose between slightly different re-skins of the same gun, pretty much, because they're all equally bland and stiff to use.

There are no advanced physics to enhance dynamic gameplay, still no vehicles, and the killstreaks are more cheap than fun at this point. Who likes to join a match where half your team is just getting insta-killed by a helicopter above the map? Roll the dice. You might not randomly die, between the latency, the aim assist, and the 20 foot knives.

That's pretty much all this game is. Random death. Grenade spam, camping, quickscope abuse, and lag all contribute to one pathetic package of random death.

It gets 2 instead of 0 because it's a functional game, and not a pile of slag that nukes your HDD.

If you were to come into the game from a completely neutral standpoint, having never played any COD game before, you'd likely think I was crazy. The game is at least solid, and has no major gamebreaking glitches. For most of us here however, that's just not the case. I started my COD experience on MW2, and it didn't take me long to figure out that OMA Tubing was the way to go. The game was severely broke due to this, yet nothing was ever done to fix it. A simple patch could have been released that would have fixed this in a variety of different ways, but never did. It infuriated me that they pushed DLC but never took just a little time and fixed the gameplay itself - I guess there was no money in that since people were taking in the DLC hook, line, and sinker. To me it's comparable to putting rims on a car that won't start. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. When Black Ops came out I let my friend buy it to see what it was like. Although the tubes were not infinite, the maps were still small and corridor based. They left in last stand, and the p2p latency issues persisted - including the dashboarding. If you're not aware, on the Xbox 360 if the host hits the guide button and then hits Y to go to the dashboard, it will drop the game and not migrate host. Spawning was still terrible, too, with people spawning behind you or vice versa. I had my share of unfair spawns on the enemy and I just cringed as I knifed them in the back after spawning less than 5 - 10 feet behind them, knowing that the same would later happen to me. Anyhow, this is a review of MW3 and it is pretty much the same as MW2. If you ask someone who plays MW2 and MW3 they may say the difference is night and day, and I'm sure it can be since comparisons are always relative of the scope. If you open up the comparison to include all games, the two are nearly identical. Sure there are no infinite tubes and the killstreaks are different, but what else? The core gameplay is completely unchanged, to include the horrible spawning from MW2 and Black Ops. And unfortunately the maps are actually getting smaller. Sniping was never great in MW2 except for possibly quickscoping, which is just a childish concept anyhow. Now that the maps keep getting smaller it is getting ever more useless.

I have not played the campaign. I did play the MW2 campaign and from what I've read the MW3 campaign is pretty much the same. If you thought the MW2 campaign was good, then... you should probably do a swan dive onto cement. It was so bad it nearly made my brain explode just playing through it - and that's just the silly over-dramatic cutscenes. The gameplay is quite honestly the most childish, unbelievable, super-charged piece of trash I've ever played. I don't know how much experience any of the kids that play it have had with the military, but as a veteran I am appalled. Some of the missions from MW2 would have you running and gunning as one man killing nearly a hundred other soldiers. All with completely scripted events and no real need for tactics. Pathetic. If you want to play a FPS that has a good single player campaign on the Xbox 360, then play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It's $20 on games on demand, and worth every penny. Do not confuse it with Operation Flashpoint: Red River, which is in fact a fresh steaming turd.

So after having played MW3 it didn't take me long to realize what they are doing is actually just trying to cycle out a game every year like sports games. I suppose they realized what a cash grab those were and that there was an audience dumb enough to buy those games that could also be exploited for FPS games. Just save your money if you aren't interested in annual installments of the same rehashed game. In the case that you do want annual installments of the same old stuff, then I'm assuming you fall into the 25% of Americans that are retarded. In which case I doubt you made it past the first few sentences without stuttering, and certainly haven't read this far, which makes the point moot.

But my biggest beef about this game is that the little perks that made varied styles of play work in MW2 have changed or are gone completely (too many to name here). Further, with the style of maps created for MW3 and with the aforementioned changes in perks, the game is now a "gift" to campers and snipers (what I always thought was a lazy and boring style of play). I was a 3 or 4 to 1 K/D player in the previous versions but if I'm going to even come close to 2 to 1 in MW3, I have to camp or snipe. That goes for EVERY map, not just two or three. There are so many issues that I won't be able to cover them all, even with a 5000 character limit, but I've had people spawn in front/behind me, spawnkilled an infinite number of times and had major issues with lag and hit detection. It's a real shame, since this could be a really good game but I'd instead recommend sticking to Modern Warfare 2 until the next game comes out, providing it isn't another copy/paste title like this is. And to be fair, I don't mind about it being more of the same, it's a formula that works to some extent, but they've got it all wrong in terms of weapon balance, map design... The list goes on. I don't think a single score would be entirely representative, so I'd give Spec-Ops mode a 7.5, Campaign an 8.5 and Multiplayer a 2. Providing it stays as it is and Infinity Ward refuse to patch it, as they've done with MW2...
This is an updated review, and I have lowered the score to compensate for the distinct lack of promise for any fixes. It's like they just can't be bothered to fix online multiplayer at all, and people have noted that a great internet speed makes the game run much better. When I play a game online, I'd rather it be a test of skill rather than who can buy the fastest internet, but maybe that's just me.

Honestly, the campaign is a campaign, I dont think it needs a rating since ofcourse it's a wild ride, crazy scenes, and explosive events. But the multiplayer? I am a devotee of this game and MW2 and MW1. I love hardcore team deathmatch to get the realism of one shot one kill, or 2 shots and a kill. Loading up a person with bullets and they dont die is just not fun or realistic to me. So what about this hardcore mode and why did i rate it so bad? Compared to MW2, this one is just terrible. I'll start with the maps. EVERY ONE of the maps are close quarters, small, and clustered. Some can be a little larger, but with all the trash in them, they become close quarters. As a huge fan of sniping and allowing more distance, I am extremely disappointed. I dont mind a few close quarter maps, but on MW3, they are ALL close quarters. There is maybe one map that you can snipe on effectively. My fav map from the last game was Wasteland. I am so disappointed that they forgot all about the sniping in this game and settled only for close quarters. So there is strike number 1.
So what else? How about the spawning. In the last game, it was possible to understand the maps, understand the general area a team was spawning so you could form a plan or hold down/attach one side of the map. The spawning is so general and random in this, you can think you have a corder of the map locked down, then they will spawn someone right behind you. Or they will spawn you right next to a group of enemies. I think this is a great way of spawning for Free For All, but NOT team based games. I cant count the amount of times that I got killed from behind in an area of the map where there is no way someone could have got behind me. They were spawned there. very very irritating. I really enjoyed being able to formulate a strategy in the last game, but it is impossible in this one with the random spawning and the clustered maps. I URGE THE DEVELOPERS to take a look at the stats. Compare the average person's life on this game to the last game. I bet it is drastically less because of the map size and close quarters spawning. It is just not fun. Again.... it would be perfect for free for all, but NOT FOR TEAM DEATHMATCH. So that is strike 2.
And finally... while the other game had this issue too, im seeing it more in this one. Bullet lag. Several times a match I will die when i get into the clutch with someone else, even point blank. Clearly my weapon fires, I can see the my muzzle blast and hear my gun fire, yet im the only one to die. and it's point blank so theres no way to possibly miss. It just doesn't make sense to me how something like that can still be an issue. The only thing i can think of is they still have that bullet lag issue, where to me it appears that I shot either first or at the same time, but to the other guy, he shot first, or to the system he show and may have already killed me, but to me, I am still alive and can shoot, but my kill doesnt count. only my death. So that is strike 3. I sincerely regret purchasing Elite Premium. Their service has failed in so many ways already, from it's launch to it's lack of fulfilling promises. I can overlook the bullet lag as i did with the last one, but the random spawning and lack of variety in maps just kills me. I will try out BF3 (again, ive been a devoted MW fan), If BF3 appears to be better in these areas as I've read, I'll be a lifetime fan of them from then on. For shame on MW3, InfinityWard, Sledgehammer, and all the like. You lost a fan because you were narrow minded and all about the short game (pun intended). Next time try for some map variety and intelligent spawns that allow for gameplay strategies to occur. I used to be a big Ghost Recon fan, but thought after how good MWF has been doing, i dont see why I'd go back... but thanks to MW3. I eagerly await trying BF3 and Ghost Recon (when it comes out) for the variety that i love. So long MW3, you crapped on your fans for a narrow minded result . "You'll love our game, as long as you love what we love" sounds like "you buy a car in any color you want, as long as you want black". Lack of choice is a killer.

Spec Ops is some what entertaining, but it will not be the mode you play the most and will probably only play it once or twice and get tired of it.
New single player, but most people buying first person shooters aren't looking for single player, and mainly looking for multiplayer to play with your friends.
What isn't new? Well, I have seen a lot of similar guns in the past Call of Duty.
The maps are very similar, and for some reason every time I get in one, I feel like I have played it numerous times before on a previous CoD.
The graphics are obviously not new, which this may be good in your case if you have a bad graphics card and can not handle games like Skyrim. In my case, it is bad.
The sounds of the guns are not that great, sounds in general isn't that great.

Back to what is new subject, I doubt they put $60 worth of effort into a new single player (which not many people care about), a new game mode which could be coded easily, and a few new guns.
My advise is just wait until Modern Warfare 3 goes to a lower price.

They robbed me from my money, but I will make sure not to buy another one.

The only reason this CoD community has continued on, is from all the middle school kids having their friends play it, so they want to play it and believe it is a good game worth getting.

Final point; If you are 15+ I would suggest you go get another first person shooter because you will not enjoy the community in CoD games, constant kids yelling and screaming, not a good community.
If you are a 8-14 age, I suggest you should get this because you would probably enjoy it.

I bought this game after being promised something new. It should be called Modern Whatever you A**holes will buy it. I played the campaign fun and basically the same, what did you expect. The worst thing is little kids playing it. It's a f***ing m game. When I buy it I expect a little kid here and there cause he has way too under bearing parents, but when I play every player except like 2 of them are like 5 years old. It seems that somehow, I am suckered into buying cod4 multiple times. The multiplayer is an identical playstyle to older titles, even with the "Improvements" made to it. Graphically it is the equivalent to some of the first round Xbox 360 titles. Nothing is stunning about the campaign, the explosions are cool, but i dont feel connected like i did in MW2. Spec Ops is gimmicky. Making me wish i hadn't sold Black Ops, so i could play the zombie mode. This game came out about 4 years to late in the market, as the technologies are outdated, and overused... with new games with brand new engines specifically made for each game coming out like BF3 and Skyrim, and Portal 2 launching on a over 6 year old Source engine, but still looking and playing like a brand new, out of the box designed game. Thier is no excuse for the level of laziness, especially with millions of dollars in profit being made off of launch day and pre-orders. Expand

I know the developers think spoilt gamers just complain as they expect innovation every time, and that as soon as they change it the gamers complain it has changed, that may well be the case, but true innovation in design is about identifying what works, and then improving it for the end user, not removing it or changing it to something unrecognisable. The developers of this game do not listen to its' end users concerns adequately and each time a new installment comes out, millions buy it in the hope of improvement, and instead they get MW3. Developers you think there is no pleasing us, but should you be trying to do exactly that, when its us handing over our hard earned cash to buy what you make. its a two way process. maybe you would get less bad reviews and complaints if you did listen to what we have to say. at £90 sterling and a que in the rain at midnight on the night of release for the hardened edition. it was a waste of time and money. all i can say is im looking forward to treyarchs next installment. Same game, different year. There is nothing in this game that you haven't seen in the previous ones. The story is ok, all 5 hours of it!! and the online actually got me addicted for about 3 days, these are the only reasons its getting a 2/10 from me.

An Honest Review from a Typical Gamer:
I have played COD since the VERY FIRST game. MW3, visually, is the game. But now multi player is getting all too familiar, and its losing the fun factor it had in the previous games. Infinity Ward once again chooses to help "noobs" by extremely strong kill streaks. Black Ops and COD 4 were one of the few games that made the player use their guns. MW3

MW3 lets the killstreaks do all the work, no effort needed. Needless to say, it is not even interesting anymore. Kill Confirmed, many people just play to kill and dont collect the dog tags, once again forgetting about teamwork.

I HAVE GIVEN 2 points out of 10, just for survival. Although it is NOWHERE as close as zombies, its different and interesting. Story, I was excited, but it just didnt work out as planned. I still dont understand the story.

It works as a game but again, like the ps3 game design barely functions and unstable and very laggy and messy multiplayer. To make sure my relative's version that I borrowed wasn't simply a bad copy/version I hired it as well and there were game crashes present, hackers which I didn't expect to be fixed over the half a year period I didn't have the game since I last borrowed it and over-expensive map packs. I can understand paying on the xbox version but PC it should've at least been free after all the trouble we had - never the less the dlc is actually good on consoles but little-no content for a lot of money which is a negative. The xbox version also crashes more frequent than the ps3 - which is to be expected as the console is using outdated hardware compared to both/simultaneously ps3 and pc. Since the ps3 and xbox versions function the same I'll give the same, generous rating. 2/10. Mass Effect 3 changed their game and listened to fans, why can't MW 3 - and they're wondering why their getting low ratings and want people to boost their game back up - we're being honest, I am at least. You can't call all of us neg. reviewers trolls though and even if we all are a low score is something to be concerned about in the least and maybe action to fix/remedy the situation should be considered.

I played the first COD EVER (PC game originally) and the game was wonderful... After the WWII series, there came MW1, fantastic! Was a great game. Then came the crappy games, MW2, total let down. Now MW3, what to say, well! Repetitive Multiplayer gameplay, the game styles are the SAME, graphics are 3-4 years old (OUTDATED), maps are crappy, i could do better on the Black Ops map Editor and then import it to XBOX360. This game is not the Call of Duty series i remember. It is now a money trap for kids. It is a money machine. All they want is easily earned money. Map Packs they are making you pay for 15$ is not even worth a 3$. The time it takes to create them is about 2 days. They really steal people. Infinity Ward saddens me, since MW2. Not a joke! Black Ops was crappy, and was still better than MW3? You're kidding me? This game is not a 2011 game. It is a 2009 quality game. Please, do not buy. Get Battlefield 3, which is QUALITY level game. Also there is Medal of Honor, which is very good for the Campaign. Like i said, i am not a fanboy, Battlefield 3 was the first Battlefield i EVER played.. And i think i will stick to this franchise, next release. XBOX360, PC or not. Seriously... AVOID buying. Tip from a very old gamer (since about 1995) ... Thanks. Expand

The game continues to use the same gameplay techniques from 2007's Call of Duty 4 which have long become stale and overused, the franchise has no right to remain in action after such an appalling attempt at making a game. This game is horrible I think the multiplayer sucks just like the single player. Only thing I did like was survival mode it becomes boring about in one hour. I think its just like Modern Warfare 2 there is no difference except the weapons.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
