MW3 though is very frustrating, it lacks so much that we now expect in a FPS games, I mean really simple things such as spawning, maps and weapons. The biggest thing that I'm disappointed about MW3 is the maps. Those days of choosing whether to sniper or creep round out flanking are well and truly gone, the maps are designed for just one way to play and that's run around like a headless chicken and shoot!! 0 tactics and no sense of you working as a team. The maps also show no kind of creativity, there's nothing new that we haven't seen before. On the plus side, the campaign is just what I wanted and enjoyed the final part to the story. And that's why I've award it a 5, but like most games this day it's all about the online experience, and quite frankly it just doesn't cut it, there's a bigger dog now in my opinion which is laying a path for the future for FPS's and that's Battlefield 3. It has everything, huge maps, the opportunity to make weapon semi auto to automatic, a selection of vehicles, realistic damage and the real sense that you are in a real battle. I applaud EA stepping up their game and for once making them serious contenders as king of FPS. MW3 I fear will not be taken out of it's case as much as the other previous games and I'm gutted and feel rather let down :( Expand

When the Modern Warfare 3 commercial includes WW3, I expect full scale front lines war, like World at War. I wasn't expecting tactical teams going street to street following tanks. This is not WW3.

The multiplayer is exactly the same as Modern warfare 2 and Black Ops. Perks, Unlockable guns, and killstreaks are all apart of the multiplayer. The only difference is that we get a new mode called survival. Survival is the only reason, in my opinion, to get this game. It is fun. The only thing is it is two player. It Would be better with more than two players.

I give this game a 5 because of the lackluster single-player, the copycat multiplayer (but fun Survival). I really hope that this Franchise does not turn into another Madden.

I have to say up front, that I'm not a big campaign guy. The campaign might be excellent, but I don't buy these games for the single-player. My ratio of single to multi player is probably around 2:200. But that's just the problem, the multiplayer is awful. Rather than being innovative, IW decided to stick with their same upgrade system to enjoy perks and weapon addons. Say what you will about Black Ops, but it did revolutionize multiplayer "earnings" with COD cash that was useful in skipping boring sights, weapon addons, etc. so you could get right to your preferences without waiting until level 70. This game goes with the same boring method of earning your way to everything, something that just won't peak my interest after the honeymoon period.

We are still stuck with the same engine, that pretty much makes it easy for people to die yet harder to kill. I am still baffled at the fact that with such a complex dynamic database, I am still playing maps I don't want to. Why am I still playing with idiots that barely touch my level of FPS skill? Is IW really still having trouble trying to fix multiplayer? I know this isn't IW because bad matchmaking was why I quit playing Black Ops. I just cannot understand why I still have to be placed on a team with idiots. Is it really so hard to match skill level?

Spawning seems as worse as ever. Can no one figure a decent algorithm for spawning already? Are we still stuck in 2002? At least place more spawn zones. The entire map should be spawn zones so that the usual "furthest from enemies" algorithm will work better. It certainly doesn't help that your maps are like a Swiss cheese of obstacles. Imagine a maze. Now imagine all vertical lines removed. This is what these maps are playing like. I could hide behind one half wall for security, but I'm completely open from 3 other angles. What's the point?

Could someone PLEASE work with committees to get this game right. I would gladly fly out on my own dime to be apart of a committee because these things are so easy to detect and fix before you release anything. You need review and QA committees because this game is just awful when it comes to so many factors. I want the product to succeed. I want people to get back what they are paying for in quality gaming. I fear that if you keep releasing this stuff without checking in with others, you will eventually lose your franchise to a competitor. I remember when IW used to listen to its people when Bungie didn't. This is EXACTLY what happened with Halo.

That aside, the main reason that this game got a 5 is the story mode. if the online play was better, i would have no issues giving this game a higher rating; the fact is that the online is unacceptable. the re-spawn algorithm/coding is quite possibly the worst that i have ever seen, in any FPS. the graphics are poor, the game engine is recycled, and the audio is garbage. I have enjoyed CoD since the beginning, but this game feels stale. The movement animations are still fluid and crisp, but the entire game platform is simply a rinse and repeat. This series peaked at the original modern warfare and has been slowly declining since. the campaign has the feel of last-nights-leftovers, but in this day and age, originality and creativity are gone. As for the online play, there is always a xbox error, host migration, glitch, etc, that is hindering the online. if you want a better campaign, buy this. if you want better online. buy battlefield. I wasn't expecting a whole new experience, but there is nothing that I can point to and say "This is really cool.", or " x problem from the last games seems to be much better." The spawn system and the quick scoping, which seems to be much more reliable in this iteration, takes you out of the game and results in squashing any atmosphere. I don't see any improvements for those who actually enjoy sniping. It is still mostly geared to "run and gunners" which results in more camping than usual. The game play has lost it's novelty after this many attempts and has been reduced to points grinding sessions instead of actual fun. IW is going to need some major kick a$$ DLC.
The last thing I will comment on is the Elite product. This is wrong in so many ways. This reeks of a project that was hijacked and perverted by nothing but greed. Will I still play this game? Yes. But it will be a lot easier to break for other games .

The campaign is more of the same. You play multiple characters as you make your way through a story of what can only be described as "sensory overload" of having to move from point A to point B while shooting pockets of seemingly endless spawning bad guys. Long story short, I got the feeling of been there, done that. Even de ja' vu at times. Story won't blow your mind; however, it does do it's best to tie up loose ends in this trilogy. If you loved the previous two games, you will like this. Can be a little "samey, samey". You know, like Michael Cera's movie characters. Seen him in one movie and that is what you can expect in every single movie you will ever see him in. The multiplayer is more of the same, as well. If you like the previous games, you will like this one; but, may experience some burnout if you were on your way there in previous installments. Would be rated higher as an expansion pack or dlc.

All of the campaign missions have a 'follow me' design to them , even the stealth missions do not let you diverge from your 'follow me' leader, who strings you along every mission in some form or another.

The game seems to improve on the multi-player I am accustomed to as well bringing the balance MW2 needed as well is getting core mechanics right which is what Black Ops needed; but where the game falls flat for me is the maps. I don't like the new direction of the maps they all seem very similar and feel like an ant tunnel. They just seem like mindless running about with no strategy or structure and there seems to too many routes and entrances to any position and there is a serious lack of the verticality MW2 maps brought to the table. The spawns only exacerbate the situation and are at times extremely poor. For some reason they also seem to have backtracked on the scaling; poor scaling of objects, buildings, doors, and character models can be frustrating. The dislike of almost all the maps is an irredeemable factor for me and no amount of map packs can fix that which is very unfortunate because the game could of been the best one yet. I know Black Ops was a little slow in the beginning and it sped up over a couple months, but the alternation between multiplayer developers shows that they are unwilling to share their experiences with each other to help the franchise evolve. The maps don't vary in size at all like Black Ops did and they seem a bit small. The spawning points in the multiplayer are erratic and I usually end up dying within two seconds of respawning once or twice a match. The map size also contributes to dying immediately after a kill because of how close the next enemy is. I have never played a Battlefield game before, but I might since MW3 has seemed to be a bust. The reason for a mediocre score is because the game has potential and can be updated to fix all of the flaws, but it will take a miracle to turn this game into a 10/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like smearing a game like this. But honestly, early previews suggested nothing exciting about this game, and the biggest aspect of its appeal to me was its story; and while I have enjoyed my time with it playing with my friends, and I have a modicum of fun with it, I certainly agree that there is nothing here which hasn't been done before, specifically in Modern Warfare 2. This game needs to be the last time Activision rests on its laurels, lest next year be the Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock/ Tony Hawk Ride of this series. People say its the Madden of shooters, and this years is that in spades. While I haven't finished Campaign yet, so far its been a largely predictable bit of set pieces, retreading the same old gameplay "variety" we've had since Modern Warfare is a bit trite. I started the story on veteran and have had little difficulty at all moving through it. The story seems ridiculous the more I think of it -- the notion that all of the world would go to war over one American body found at a terrorist attack? We couldn't disavow this guy? All the footage of the four OTHER guys, one of which, at least, Russian? (Don't get me wrong, I felt that sequence in the airport was very powerful, and a great device for the story, and the consequences were handled well enough too. I felt something seeing suburbs burning as Ramirez.) But I digress. So I will say lastly for the story so far is that the sequence which has been most controversial so far, was not at all necessary, and is rendered less effective even for how out of place it is, as there are no other children in the story, or any where. So I feel this fell flat, to be frank, like they only included it to A) Try and cram drama forcibly down our throat, or B) Tried to cram controversy down our throat. This game plays solidly, and has plenty of bro worthy moments, but no more or less than any other Call of duty ever has in its online play. THis is fine. And the fact that millions have bought it, thats fine too. But it is sad, in a way. As you see I feel this game was mostly phoned in, and if you feel like Professional reviewers were paid off , I feel similarly. The spec ops mode is unorginal, but I had fun with MW2s, and I enjoy survival, as well. I will continue to play Multiplayer, just to hang and compete with friends. But I will not pay another dime for dlc, I will not get Elite. The changes I can note are only two fold: Grenade launchers don't kill in one shot, and strike packages. This was overhyped. Halo 2, was hyped about right, maybe a lil bit over. But not as much. Expand

I guess the problem that I have with Call of Duty MW3 is that the developers had a chance to create a truly great game. I've said you can tell thatI guess the problem that I have with Call of Duty MW3 is that the developers had a chance to create a truly great game. I've said you can tell that someone else made this game and that's 100% true. I doubt Activation will say that Vince Zampella and Jason West (the creators of the franchise) played that big of a part in the success of the Call of Duty but when you fire them and 40 other employees quit because of that. Out of a studio that had around 50 employees in it to begin with, that doesn't leave a lot of people left that helped create the great Call of Duty's of past. Then Activation thought that after rebuilding Infinity Ward and adding the a brand new studio in which they just created called Sledgehammer games, to finish what the original Infinity Ward started would be ok. No it wasn't and shame on them for thinking it was. Now I don't hate COD MW3 but its defiantly not my first choice when it comes to game that I own. Expand

When news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on VeteranWhen news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on Veteran difficulty, taking a mere 6 hours to complete from beginning to end, and feels more like an interactive roller coaster ride than anything else, shooting popup targets as you go.
Multiplayer is where longevity comes into play for an FPS, and to be perfectly blunt, this is what I was most pissed off about. The fun to be had in multiplayer is evident, but the feeling that you were ripped off soon sinks in when you realize this is pretty much the same game we were playing 2 years ago with a new paint job. The new killstreaks aren't as enjoyable to play around with, all the "new" perks and weapons are just retweaks of existing COD staples (even the deathstreaks and weapon perks are just conditional perks mostly from older games). Compounding the distaste is the horrible map designs and spawn locations. The game launched with over 10 maps to play with, but the fact that most of the maps are similar in confinement and lack any real creativity is a shame.
Weapon imbalances are abound, which will hopefully be rectified via patches ala BlackOps. Some weapons such as shotguns and some smg and AR's are completely outclassed in everyway by others.

Gone are all the stats menus that came in-game with BlackOps, instead you are relegated to using Call of Duty Elite, an app for your XBox that employs clan connectivity and allows you to see in-depth stats, and of course if you want the real meat and potatoes for this app you need to pay an annual fee. The new highlight of the multiplayer is Kill Confirmed, a mode of deathmatch that tries to discourage camping by forcing players to gather tags off downed enemies in order to score. The only problem is that it actually employs camping as well, as many individuals will use the tags as bait. This is not a problem of the game itself, but the community at large who wish increase their personal kill to death ratio than actually contribute to a winning game. In conclusion, I would have felt much more comfortable paying $40 for what feels more like an expansion pack than full-fledged new game, but at the current $60 retail value you are paying too much. And considering the fact that Activision will be releasing maps packs often for this game, over the course of the year you are looking to spend atleast $90 for this game alone, even more if you are a subscriber to the COD Elite service.

The single most awaited game this year for most.. A good amount of pre-orders.. Lines around the corner at your local gamestop.. But was it worth it is the question? But was it worth it is the question? Now true enough it does provide some fun hours online with a decent multiplayer progression system we all know and love. And even provides an ok campaign which sadly is extremely short. But in my opinion MW3 was nothing more than a modern warfare 2 expansion pack that at best should have been sold at no more than $39.99 if that. The graphics, while decent, were slightly up from MW2 and of course for the battlefield 3 faithful they will say its no where close which is absolutely true. But of course graphics is not the main draw for any game... what good is graphics if the game just sucks? MW3 does provide a decent balanced multiplayer which to me is the most balanced to date. The lag is minimal and the net code seems to be great with awesome hit detection.. BUT there are some weapon balance issues that need to be work on with a patch. The campaign is very predictable but does keep the pace decent to keep you entertain but dont expect any OMG moments. The campaign is also short which if you are a average player expect to breeze through with about 4-5 hours of gameplay.. longer on harder difficultites maybe of course. Bugs were minimal throughout my playthrough so it was a tightly knit experience with maybe some AI issues here and there but nothing out the ordinary. Speaking on AI in MW3.. nothing has really changed.. constant spawn until you move up or clear an objective but this is not a tactical game.. its basically an extreme rail shooter.. and it does it well. So with that being said.. if you go into this game just expecting a decent fun time with great multiplayer moments with friends you may be pleased.. IF you fell for the marketing hype and the "biggest launch in video game history" you will most likely be disappointed when you pop in the game and have a play-through. Its not a bad game at all.. but its nothing innovative. It is a modern warfare 2 expansion pack for 59.99. Kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I say it deserves a decent.. good.. old.. average.. run of the mill.. 5. Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
