Don't listen to bad reviews, they're just pissed because of the motion controls and more linear structure, but that doesn't make this game any less a Zelda game. Going into the stuff this game does right, there are the dungeons; this game has easily the strongest set of dungeons in the series and the bosses are as good as Ocarina's and Twilight's. It also has the best characters and character development, with a Zelda that you actually care about. The game is colorful and it's one of the best looking games on the Wii. One worry I had was that it would overuse the motion controls like most Wii games, thankfully it doesn't.

Now, for what the game did wrong, it feels kind of linear because you go back to the first three areas twice, the difference each time you go back is that you explore new regions. People use this as an excuse to say that it's linear, but it's just an illusion. The other major thing I have issues with is Fi, she is by far worse than Navi. This are all just little complaints that don't really affect much the experience.

This is a must play if you have a Wii, and remember, don't listen to the bad reviews.

You traverse a single dungeon in each of these (which don’t feel as secluded as in past games) and then return for a second one. The sense of adventure is great as you explore the game’s colorful world. This game has ample new features added to it: upgrading equipment using materials you find, swinging the Wii Remote in varied directions to slash your enemy in that direction (think you look stupid or not, it adds another layer to the combat), discovering miniature floating islands as you fly on a Lowftwing, etc. I understand the mixed opinions on this game, but I believe that most of its changes were for the better and I’d have to say it’s the best Zelda yet. I played it for around 68 hours and really enjoyed the majority of it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The legend of zelda skyward sword is in my opinion the best wii game and one of the greatest games of all time. Right from the beginning you know the game will be incredible. The stunning cutscenes in the first hour in the game are mind blowing and suck you into the world of skyloft and for the first time in a while it makes you care about the NPCs in skyloft. The big issue people had with this game had to be the motion controls. Well to put it bluntly it was either you or the controller because the controls for me worked perfectly. The story starts off a bit slow but its still great. Zelda invites you to the statue for some flying practice before the ceremony but your bird is nowhere to be found you then confront a bully named groose who actually hid your bird, you find it win the ceremony but zelda gets sucked into a tornado to the surface after you wake up Fi guides you to the statue you get a sword and begin your adventure. The surface is divided into faron woods, eldin volcano and lanayru desert with multiple challenges in ecah but that will be too long to explain. Just play it Expand

Ok, this game is not a bad game by itself but I honestly believe it is one of the weakest entries in the Zelda series. There are so many things that were cut from the final game that it doesn't feel as much as Zelda than as some other generic adventure title. There are so many things that were cut from the final game that it doesn't feel as much as Zelda than as some other generic adventure title. It has a few strong points and even in its weakness, it's not terrible.

One thing that I really didn't like was the lack of overworld. The skies are pretty much empty and are boring, the city is not so big as to offer an exploring challenge, therefore there's not actual exploration in this game, one of the basic pilars of the legend of Zelda games and something I have always loved.

The lands are an unrealistic laberinth, a dungeon, they don't feel as a place to explore but a combination of corridors to get to the next dungeon.

The lack of day and night cycles reduce the feeling of natural environment and brings me back to very old games, before Ocarina of time. The dawn and the twilight brought me so many amazing feelings in Ocarina, Twilight princess and Wind waker that I couldn't understand why remove such a basic feature.

There are no towns or cities to explore, just the city on the skies. Even Majora's mask had something that looked like a zora domain or a goron city. Places to enjoy and explore full of friendly npcs, shops, etc.

i didn't like the gameplay either. The built I had in my house with the wii made reallly hard for me back then to play the game right, my controls were desynchronized every now and then, and they were not precise at all... at least in my case. And I always felt tedious to fight even the most basic mob, when I had to strike him in specific ways to kill him. He is WEAK, I have defeated one hundred guys stronger than him, why do I need to stop and take 20 seconds calculating his strike to actually kill him??

The graphic style was ok but I didn't like the Link's model. His lips were strange and talking about lips, i didn't like Girahim at first either. Creepy bastard. At least Zant look serious at first.

The game takes my hand all the time and I mean ALL THE **** TIME. Phi is tedious, freaking tedious, much, much, much worse than Navi. At least Navi felt alive. And she just interrupted me once or twice for every playing session. Phi interrupts every freaking time for the most stupid reasons. The game is really linear, you just can't get lost between dungeons.

Another thing I really didn't like is how you need to get back to the same places once, and again, and again, and fight the same bosses once and again, and again. I got sick of the imprisoned.

The game has some great things. The story was surprisingly good (Breath of the wild 2 needs to take that from here) andthe characters in general were great. I really loved the redhair bully even if I can't remember his name, that character evolved quite a lot and that's amazing.

The music is great and the dungeons are really creative and interesting (in general).

But exploration and fighting are things that I think are essential in a Zelda game and in my opinion, a big failure here. I understand even 6 or 7 points from people that gives more value to story and characters but to me, it's exploration and gameplay first and I can't forgive that.

Maybe that's why I love Breath of the wild so much, that game fixed most of the problems taht Skyward sword created. If the next Zelda was following the skyward sword line of features I would stopped playing Zelda games and that's not a guessing, I know it for sure.

This is a decent game maybe but a really bad Zelda game.

But the amount of times the game slows you down and the repetitive boss fights, are huge downs. allong with a sky just acting as a hub world, no interconnected world and this being the most linear zelda game ever, are big drawbacks.

The art style and music of this game is the best of any zelda games before it. I don't really care about graphics, but this just amazed me, it looked better then most highly realistic games. And the music is just stunning. I only listen to a few game soundtracks and i listen to this one by far the most. I even have isle of songs playing in the background while writing this.

All in all, this may not be the best zelda game, but i comes close in my opinion.

The bosses were awesome, with Ancient Cisterns "KOLOKTOS" being my all-time favourite Zelda boss to date. The art style is beautiful, and looks even better when upscaled to HD. I enjoyed Skyloft a lot, and the other islands were great supplements. Some problems is the huge amount of backtracking. this is where a lot of criticism come from, and I get it. Backtracking can be tedious, unless you're playing Metroidvanias, they have a pass. Redoing the Skieview temple was not that great, but if it leads to Ancient Cistern, then I'm all for it. The overworld was also small and linear, which a lot of people did not like because every Zelda game has to be open and can't change anything unless its BoTW.

Skyward sword is a great game, and Its fairly cheap right now, so buy it, give it a chance, and enjoy!

If you value story telling above gameplay, then Skyward Sword will be one of your favourite games in the Zelda franchise. The story was compelling and the characters had that unique Zelda charm that we’ve come to know and love about the series. The combat (which utilizes the Wii’s motion+ technology) can take some getting used to, but I found myself having fun once I took the time to perform the correct motions. I should add that not all actions felt as natural as others. For example, rolling bombs seemed to require a great deal more precision than pulling back the string on your bow and arrows. Motion controls worked well all things considered, just so long as you remember to recalibrate the controller by swinging your sword vertically with large motions or by entering the menu screen and pressing down.

Speaking of the menu, the new item wheel was the most convenient way to swap out weapons on the fly, even better than using a touch screen because once you get accustomed to where your items are located on the wheel, muscle memory naturally guides your motions to the proper selection. I should also add that swimming in Skyward Sword feels great too. After spending roughly 400+ hours playing Breath of the Wild over 2 full playthroughs, it felt nice to go back and revisit Skyward Sword’s more traditional looking dungeons. The sandship was a personal favourite of mine and the lead up to it was just as fun as the dungeon itself. And of course, Nintendo nailed the music in this game as they always do for their AAA titles.

With these positives out of the way, it’s time to discuss the negatives. Link is accompanied by a companion whose very existence can annoy even the most patient of gamers. I’m talking of course about Fi, Link’s spirit companion that resides within his sword. At first, Fi seems just like any other companion until you take your first steps towards freedom...and by freedom I mean when the game actually begins, approximately 2 hours after introduction. Fi is not a “bad” companion per se. She’s actually very sweet and she does grow on the player towards the end of the game, if her warning alerts could be disabled that would make it so much easier to appreciate her character. Then we have the collection screen which mysteriously pops up each time Link collects new treasure and if you reset the system, all items collected are treated as “new items“ so the player is once again greeted with a 10 second pause to revisit the collection screen just to remind you that you have 60 amber relics. The good news is that most of these issues can be fixed with a remake.

One issue that may be harder to fix is the overworld itself. The sky is barren and there are only 3 areas below the clouds (Forrest, Desert, Volcano) and each of these areas has a sub-area which can only be reached by backtracking. This feels relatively small for a Zelda game even if the areas themselves are quite large. Some of the bosses, like Ghirahim and the Imprisoned, were recycled 3 times over and that does not include the times you’ll spend fighting them in boss rush mode. A completionist will have fought them both 5 times over the course of 1 playthrough. This isn’t a little excessive, this is padding pure and simple.

So in conclusion, if you had the patience to read my full review then you will probably enjoy Skyward Sword. It is a great game buried beneath a layer of frustrating decisions that can be easily rectified by an HD remake.

The story and characters are superb, with possibly the best incarnations of Link and Zelda as well as great supporting cast and villains. The orchestrated music mesmerizes the player with some of the best themes in the Zelda series.
What makes this game a 10/10 experience, for me, is the motion controls. These controls not only make certain actions like aiming, flying, and swimming more fluid than almost all games that uses traditional controls, it also provides the player with a sense of immersion not seen in any game, prior. Combat is now more strategic than Zelda games, and a lot of other games, from before. You have to be precise with how you swing the wii-mote if you want to hit your target. Even if the enemy is stunned you still have to swing your sword in the correct direction. It's not mindless waggling/button-mashing. Since the player is doing what Link is doing, onscreen, the player feels more involved with what is going on in game, which provides that feeling of immersion mentioned before.
The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword does for motion controls what Super Mario 64 did for 3D gaming; it looked at how earlier efforts tried fully integrating motion controls into its game play and said "No everyone, THIS is how you do it!"
Some people deride the game for going all in on motion controls, and while they are allowed not like motion controls, to say that a game is bad because it uses motion controls is just bias disguised as "fair criticism". I choose to look at every game for what they are and judge them by their own merits.
Skyward Sword is objectively a fantastic game without its motion controls, which is why Breath of the Wild based a lot of its game design from Skyward Sword. However, the game, through its implementation of motion controls, went from fantastic to legendary. It's this kind of innovation that Skyward Sword brings to the table that makes the game not only the greatest game for the Wii, not only one of my favorite Zelda games, not only my personal favorite game of the 2010's, but one of my favorite games of all time. Period. If you were one of those who dismissed the game for forgoing traditional controls, curb your preconceptions, play the game, and get ready for one of the best games ever made.
