For me this is the definitive Smash experience. Though Wii U is better, this is the one I will never forget. Plus, Snake was in it! There was an enjoyable Adventure Mode! There's characters who were missing from Wii U and 3DS! An excellent game.

Ahh... the memories I made playing this game. Definitely an astonishing game! A fun way to kill some time with friends or family. 1 small, tiny issue I have is that the button-pressing was a little behind, otherwise I'd say this game is all-in-all an awesome game! Story mode was my favorite aspect of the game.

Sure, there are a few gameplay choices which are frustrating - tripping, slower meta, etc. - but even for its flaws, this game is exceptional. This game introduced the full-fledged story mode we may never get again: Subspace Emissary. Not the best platformer in the world, but the mashup of characters with cutscenes to demonstrate the storytelling we all have in our minds as little kids pitting their favorite characters against each other. Yes, the meta for competitive gampelay is broken with Meta Knight dominating the roster and with many glitches that top-level players can exploit. This is one of many reasons why its competitive aspect hasn't stood the test of time. But the gameplay is still fun to revisit with a new roster of characters, including my personal all-time favorite, King Dedede, to other great additions such as Snake. The music is absolutely fantastic, and yes, does take itself seriously in some regards, but I appreciate that the composers and game directors made the choice to do so and fully went with it. Casual play also is a lot of fun with the introductions of assist trophies and of course, final smashes. As imbalanced as the final smashes are, ranging from Mario's astonishingly weak fire attack to longlasting fury of Super Sonic, these were also among some of the most fun. I'd rather have some final smashes back like King Dedede's Waddle Dee Army or Giga Bowser rather than some of the new additions we have for Smash Bros Ultimate, which seeks to get players back into the match more quickly. Overall, a gem of a game. Not the best in the series, but often undervalued for how well it still can stand on its own even through its flaws. Expand

Most characters from Melee return along with a big list of newcomers like Wario, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, King Dedede, R.O.B, Olimar, and even Snake and Sonic who were the first third party characters in the series. There are so many cool new stages to choose from as well as 10 coming back from Melee. Some of them include Delfino Plaza, Pirate Ship, Spear Pillar, Halberd, Castle Siege and many more! The wii remote controls aren’t the best but I’m okay with them, and you have the option to use your GameCube controller. The graphics were a huge upgrade from the previous entry. The soundtrack is massive with hundreds of amazing music tracks, and you can choose which songs you want to hear on each stage with my music! There are many different trophies to collect with an astonishing 544, and you can get some in the coin launcher minigame which is fun! Events matches return and are as fun as ever, with many different single player and multiplayer ones! This game introduced the stage builder which allows you to create your own stages, which was such a great idea! The best thing about this game however, and the reason I consider it the best in the series, is the Subspace Emissary! There is a large amount of cutscenes which tell a really good story without even any dialogue, and a lot of different 2D sidescroller levels to play through specific to this mode. This game is a masterpiece and to me is the definition of what makes Super Smash Bros so good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Smash Bros Brawl is easily one of the best games for the Wii, and has an excellent soundtrack.

After almost 15 years, it still is excellent and fun to play, with the first third party characters in the series in Sega’s mascot in Sonic, and Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series by Konami.

The adventure mode in Subspace Emissary is a long and epic mashup where you can unlock all the characters by itself. All Star mode is unlocked after unlocking all the characters via Subspace, specific tasks, and/or vs. matches played. Compared to Melee, All Star mode is more random while Classic mode is less random in Brawl. Some characters from Melee in Young Link and Mewtwo are gone, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it.

Overall an incredible game that still holds up well, and has many different controller options.

I was suspecting a advanced stage building, but instead it was reminding me of level building on a game boy color, having the same music looping over and over and I loose imagination about how the level should be constructed. What I want is being able to make stages similar to other pretty made stages like Brinstar, Yoshi's Island (both normal and melee), Summit, New Pork City and others by manipulating brushes, making triggers around the map and could make 3d animating backgrounds and you'll feel special when your project is done and the stage is impressive. Otherwise the stage builder the game is very replayable. I seriously love the tweaks of the characters and thier attacks. The adventure mode is okay but when you've done 50% of the game you think you're at 90% because you're in the socalled "Subspace Emissary". Graphics are brilliant and the animation is perfect, the lenght of enjoying the game is very long, but stage builder is bit of a joke, mostly because I love building stages as long you have the right tools to build a stage. Have been playing for a month, living in Japan. Unlike Melee it doesn't feature bilingual menus, which is no problem if you're playing in your native language. Unlike Melee it doesn't feature bilingual menus, which is no problem if you're playing in your native language. (I tend to believe, despite understanding the game in Japanese, that the game is much more rewarding in English.) Aside from this, the game is perfection. There's also a wonderful quasi-handicapping ability in choosing one controller over another. You can play the game through any number of ways you like on a classic controller, alone or in groups or online, and then play the exact same game using the Wiimote, or with the Wiimote and nunchuk, and the game feels totally alien. The weights and movements of characters are each slightly different from Melee, which means you're not just buying the same game over again -- you're rewarded more in the gameplay department for actually pulling off combos and making strategic movements. I do think there is much room for improvement still for the series, and suspect the next release will be made on a beefed up DVD-playable 12Gb storage Wii (or future console) and will allow you not only to choose your character, but the character's renderings from original sprites up through each Smash Bros version, with corresponding physics. Or options to allow those physics and gameplay styles. The level editor and online options justify the purchase, it comes with co-op adventure mode, team play, more characters than you will be able to remember even after spoiling yourself silly on the main website and wikipedia.. and it's a nonstop unlockfest that does not stop giving, no matter how casually you play. Just a really, really enjoyable game. It's the kind of excitement you feel not just because you're playing it, but because every moment is something you'll want to tell every detail about to friends who are not there witnessing it with you. You'll want to play the game over from scratch with an audience, take videos of everything, reset your save game to zero to do it again before you've even gotten far enough into it to know what's been unlocked. Dont get me started on the replayability, you will be playing this game in 5, 7, 10 years from now (exgaggeration, 4 or 5 seems reasonable). Sure... the thing is like a clone (but better!) but i think nintendo recognizes when a concept has reached its full potential. (if they can find another thing to raise the bar on this, they deserve a award) The only thing i think would need improvement is the online play (its kinda slopy, looks like it was made in a hurry) and the mapmaker (add some more depth!!!!). "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" is an intense game, which makes you play for hours without wanting to stop. The game is perfect in replay and fun manners, but it has long loading screens and the Solo Mode could be a little better.

It'll lag, it'll kick you off, it'll make you wait a long time for someone to play with...but when it does work, oh boy does it rock. It's so much fun playing with others, be it in the same room or not. The multiplayer is where most of the fun is at. The single player Classic mode is back and as fun as ever, and there's a new Adventure mode, that'll last you about ten hours, with an actual storyline and impressive, gorgeous cutscenes. Unfortunately, the story itself for the Adventure Mode seems like a crappy Kingdom Hearts-esque fanfiction gone awry, and towards the end it becomes an exercise in controller-snapping frustration. It'd probably be better with a second player (the mode supports two players), as the fights don't become clusterf***s, but the mode ain't perfect either.Another thing this mode gets wrong is that it makes it way too easy to unlock characters. I personally would rather unlock them by satisfying certain conditions during the course of the game. It almost feels like cheating, it's so easy. You could totally avoid the Adventure mode if you'd rather unlock them the way I would've wanted to. It should also be worth mentioning that Nintendo will never make cutscenes this good for a game ever again, so it's kind of a drag that the mode they were used for ended up being not all that grand. And some characters, like R.O.B. and Jigglypuff, are totally unnecessary for this game. They aren't very good characters. But still...the fun that's had playing with others eclipses any of the game's faults. Just make sure you have a Classic or a Gamecube controller handy. Expand

In Brawl however, combining the smoothness of melee, and the speed of the original, it makes the gameplay a lot more appealing to beginners, and still be playable for veterans. Still staying to the simple 2 button attacks, but with incredible amount of depth. I didn't expect much from a Wii motion sensing game, because this is an all out BRAWL fighter. Using motion sensing would make the game a bit to slippery, and for the hardcore, that's not very good. The lead director stated that "If this was a 1st party Nintendo game, we would definitely have included motion sensing." Which Brawl is not, it's a 2nd party game. Comparing Halo 2 to Halo 3, the control scheme isn't that different either, and so is the sixaxxis to the dual shock 2. My favorite character (Link), was a bit nerfed, which only made my matched harder, which I like that. In Melee, I was hauling so much *ss, not in Brawl, I have to try just a bit more. It goes to show, they definitely were able to balance the characters out more. Some people just aren't good at this game. The people that say it's boring, I agree... when I'm playing by myself. Playing the lvl9 com players does get a bit repetitive. But that's the point, this game is a party game. Go to a college party, Cod 4/Halo3/Rock Band/ Guitar Hero... and now Brawl, is going to be at that party. Playing with friends is what made the game so fun in the first place. When you're with your friends, it's just a blast. The single player... is meh. It's a 10 hour long experience, and you kinda have to force your way through it. Brawl is one of the best games you can get for the Wii in a slew of terrible games that seem to pop up for the Wii every week. The controls are basic, so even people who don't play fighting games much less any video games can learn the basics. The new adventure mode, called Subspace Emissary, is one of the many interesting features that's been put into Brawl. Even though it's pretty fun, it get's repetitive going through maze after maze fighting enemies made specifically for this mode. It's not all bad, but the plot, enemies and levels could've been better. Multiplayer is likely what the Super Smash Bros. franchise is so well-known for. Brawl took it up a notch by adding Co-op modes to many of the previously one-player exclusive modes, like Home-run Contest (where you try to send a Sandbag flying for the longest distance) and Event matches (where you fight under certain conditions). Another new feature is playing online, where you can play other people across the globe. Only problem is the online support: It takes a while to find other people and matches also have disconnecting lag (not that other online games don't, but Brawl has them more frequently). Aside from that, multiplayer still rules. Many people here might say that "Brawl is just like the other games, but with more features and characters" or some other reason. Brawl is still the way it is because that's the basis for the gameplay, like the Mario games, yet I don't hear people complaining about Super Mario World being just like the earlier games. Most of the other complaints from these reviewers are complaints from non-gamers who don't read the manual, Half-baked complaints over the stupidest things, or Xbox fans who've likely never played it and are deliberately giving it bad reviews just to promote their egos. All in all, whether you like fighting games or not, whether you're a fan of the Smash series or this is your first game, whether you're a long-time Nintendo fan or a newcomer, Super Smash Bros. The control scheme is much improved over Melee, however I've got to take a point away for the not quite as good control with the Wii remote. A lot of the new aspects of the game, however, such as the finishing moves, are simply amazing. The game is not for the story of what happens, or even the moves or level design. No, what makes this fighting game so great is two little things: 1. Anyone can pick it up and play it. Yes, the game goes deep and you can really master a particular character, but the straight up moves that take about a minute to learn apply to all characters. 2. This game is about FUN. Nothing else. You get together with a bunch of friends and play the heck out of each other. Playing it alone is nice, yes, but fighting lifeless AI gets boring after a while. (Fortunately, the AI is competent enough to give you a challenge, even if you do have a good mastery of a character.) The game is a fun fighting game. The single player is enjoyable, and there is some good exploration there, as well as some fun challenge. There are also single player challenges which test your skill.

The real meat of the game is the competitive multiplayer, and it is excellent - the best in the series. The controls are simple and intuitive, but the gameplay is very deep. Knocking foes off leads to all sorts of very interesting implications as far as gamplay is concerned, and the game is overall very enjoyable.

However, there are some flaws. Metaknight is the best character in the game, and it isn't controversial - he is simply too good. While he may not be ONLY advantageous matchups, he is very nearly so, and he can abuse the game in ways that are pretty unfun.

King Dedede has a chain grab which is incredibly obnoxious and, on a stage with walk-off edges, becomes an automatic KO if he grabs his foe. This results in these stages all being banned from competitive play, which exacerbates the issues with Metaknight, as stages with walk-off edges are his worst stages.

The supers are overpowered, resulting in them not being usable in tournament play.

Some items are really obnoxious, and because of their swinginess again are turned off in tournament play, and are even a bit obnoxious in casual play.

Overall, though, the game is great, and the flaws don't render the game bad, merely imperfect.

If you love Melee, Nintendo or just a good fighting game, then what are you doing? The single player mode, The Subspace Emissary is a story that's basically the characters have to stop an evil Army involving Master Hand, Bowser, Ganondorf, Wario, King Dedede (and maybe Wolf? Not sure about him) and a whole lot of things to stop turning game characters into statues as collectibles for some evil guy. You may think it's dull, but it's not. It's the way characters interact with each other. Them mission are also really good. Ever wanted Fox in Donkey Kong Country? You can do that here. There's a whole lot more. Unfortunately, I bought a copy with a bug in it that makes it impossible to complete it. Shame that... Also unfortunately, I can't do multiplayer because a Wi-Fi tower near my house has been out of order for quite a while, but I've been told it's really good. So if you want a great fighter game, this is a great choice. Nine out of ten from me. Expand

Because the Wii doesn't have too many hardcore games doesn't mean is death. Smash Bros put in shame the other companies console , and always will. Exaggerated combos and attacks are a joy too watch. The addition of cameos like Sonic and Snake aren't big bomb's but make good shape to the warriors.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of the best games of all time. The only things that need changes is the adventure mode and online. If that improves i will say that this is the best game of all time.I also like that there is trophies to collect from the nintedo franchise, without this it wouldnt be as fun.

It's a wonderful game. Enough said. It provides endless hours of fun to any group of people no matter how old you are. My little brothers like it, I like it, my parents like to watch it! There are some problems however, the game can be rather glitchy and a few things can get really annoying and upset the balance of the game (thank god there's a lot of settings to remedy most of this). Also I could bring down my score to maybe an eight because online is so terrible, but I just forget that it even exists. This game is practically made for groups of friends, not random strangers on the Internet. Also there's plenty of new content and even a story mode that really fits in great with the rest of the game. There are some characters that will be missed from melee however. Expand

Story mode is not that awesome, but its cool that they tried to make a story and all. Me and my friends got hooked on this game at college and had tons of fun. The multiplayer is the only thing worth spending hours upon hours playing.

My favorite multiplayer game for the Nintendo Wii. Loads of fun with beating each other up, online is a real challenge! SSE mode was a lot of fun completing with family or friends. This is my favorite Smash Bros. ever made as of to date, looking forward to the 3DS version and more character selection! The level selection in this game has everything any type of Nintendo fan wants. This is aMy favorite multiplayer game for the Nintendo Wii. This game lasted me hours of fun with my friends. The only problem would be the boring subspace emissary mode which was very limited in exploring and just not as fun as the group battles. But of course it is supposed to be a multiplayer game and it succeeds by far in that standards. Best multiplayer fighting game ever.

If the online was as good as it should be, this would be the best game on Wii. It's still hugely addictive still today, being the best multiplayer experience on the market.

This thing in one word: EPIC!
According to nintendo channel, I have played this game (also including the times I accidentally left it on all night) for over 380 HOURS! It's simply the best fighting game EVER!

Brilliant party fighter. Simple and addictive fun. Exellent stage design, great character roster and YEARS WORTH of content. I always have a blast with this game. Its issues come in the form of balance (Ike dominates) and the Subspace Emmisary mode wasting tones of potential and being repetetive. Overall the most fun on the wii you can have

One of the best games ever! The game has so much to do, that you'll keep it in your Wii for a very long time. Hopefully the next Super Smash Bros. will be even better!

  1. Brawl is easily the most fun I’ve had on a Wii, and could be the most fun I’ve had with a game in ages. It’s just that good. There is just so much to do, and so many different and refreshing things added that it would be a crime not to at least take a look.
  2. Nintendo Power

Rarely has any title delivered so much amazing action, such a wide variety of modes, and so many hours of value. It doesn't get any better than this. [Mar 2008, p.82]
  3. It’s obvious that developer Game Arts have put a painstaking amount of effort into creating this game and every time we play it we’re discovering new Nintendo references which bring back a rush of nostalgia. Brawl’s chaotic multiplayer sessions are some of the best to be had on the system, plus there are plenty of challenges and modes to amuse those ‘friend-impaired’ individuals out there as well. It’s a no-brainer, every serious Nintendo fan out there should score themselves a copy of this game, invite some friends/victims around, and have a smashing good time.
