  • Summary: The newest chapter of the Paper Mario story isn't just out of this world ... it's out of this dimension. What at first glance appears to be a 2-D sidescroller ripped straight from the pages of the Paper Mario universe soon turns into a 3-D action-adventure that defies all video game logic. Fusing 2-D and 3-D perspectives, not to mention RPG and platformer elements, the game slips back and forth between dimensions. The action sprawls across eight worlds filled with traps, puzzles, bizarre mysteries and items that often draw themselves out of thin air. Oh, and just because Mario's in the title doesn't mean he's the only star – players also get to play as Peach and Bowser. [Nintendo] Expand

  1. Probably the perfect game for those that enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. and don't mind reading a bit too much as it has an actual story and cutscenes...This game is so engaging that you won't quit without finishing the game and finding out what happens at the end.

It’s relatively shallow but contains enjoyable combat, and is packed full of secrets and wonderfully realized worlds. [June 2007, p.102]

Virtually everything you come into contact with during your time spent with this game is laden with a truly warped sense of humor.
  4. With Super Paper Mario, Intelligent Systems has crafted a game that will appeal to fans of both the platforming and RPG genres.
  5. The switch to 3D is dazzling. The rest of the game, not so much.
  6. Blending classic platform game elements with a humourous storyline and a cool dimension-flipping gimmick makes this one of the most satisfying Mario games in years.

When push leads inexorably to shove, there are probably two good games here. The problem is that you have to play them both at the same time. Those of us that would have preferred a pure platformer, or indeed a pure RPG experience, will suffer the most. Those that are happy to live with the combination will find a compelling experience, with well written dialogue, innovative play dynamics and bucket loads of Nintendo charm.

This game is a good brain teaser. It really gets you thinking and with 3D AND 2D, well, you can't get much better than that!

It may have kiddie graphics and be on a Nintendo system, but it requires some brainpower to get through. The puzzles are great brain teasers, but are never unfair. There are some mazes that take a lot of exploring and can seem like filler, but completing them brings a sense of accomplishment and relief.

I don't like difficult games, or games where you lose a lot of progress and have to do the same thing over and over. Super Paper Mario is not a hard game. I died and had to repeat a section twice, and there are save points before all of the major boss battles. Speaking of boss battles, they are clever and because you have four controllable heros to switch between, all with different strengths and abilities, the boss battles are fun puzzles in their own way.

I usually don't like side-scrolling games, but this one is clever in its use of 3D. You can press a button and turn the 2D world into 3D to get past obstacles or see hidden pipes behind bushes, but you can only stay in 3D for a limited time. You can also point the Wiimote at the screen to reveal hidden things like doors and staircases. There is a lot of exploring and experimenting required to complete the game, but it never felt like a chore.

My favorite game series of all time is The Legend of Zelda. Those games have a formula where you get a new ability and that allows you to go to a new area, where you get another new ability, and the cycle continues. Super Paper Mario has that same feeling, and all of the new tools you get in the form of abilities, heroes, and companions, are all clever and interesting.

I wasn't expecting much of a story from a Mario game, but there is one here. I won't spoil it here, but the "Mario has to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser" is turned on its head when a new bad-guy is introduced, and Bowser helps Mario and the Princess. There are subplots and love stories and more to uncover, and it is all done spectacularly. This is one of the funniest games I have ever played too.

Overall, I highly recommend this game to any adults or kids that want a funny game with a great story and puzzles that are just the right amount of difficult. You will not be disappointed in this 20-hour game. 10/10.

I admit, it is a somewhat easy game, but that's not what compels you to keep playing. That's the story's job. This game has one of the most compelling stories I've ever seen in a video game, let alone a Mario game. It'll occasionally throw a curveball at you, be it a plot twist, character revelation, etc. Despite being a Mario game, it can get surprisingly dark, especially in worlds 2, 5, and 6. Combined with beautiful artwork, good level design, and multiple ways of playing, this is a game that is an experience you won't want to miss. Unless you're, I don't know, a prick who hates creativity and a good story? Expand

That was a load of crap. SPM isn't quite as good as the first one, but the way they mapped it all out looks nice. A few of the classic moves are missing from your immediate use, but usually a pixl or switching characters does the same thing. There are a lot of different things, some parts that are a bit tricky [I had to use a walkthrough in, what is it, 8-2? Where you have to move the pipe] But overall it's a very entertaining game. I think this is another reason I did not get bored and it didnt feel repetitive because of the change from being a 3D game to a 2D game but also playing simaler to an RPG. It had everything so it never felt old to keep playing. The story is really good but I feel a majority of the story was shoved into the last hour of gameplay which did make it end on a very high note. overall the game is good. it doesn't absolutely wow me but none of the parts are bad its a very consistently good game the whole way through. If you want a game that you know you would enjoy this is a very safe option to go to. Expand

It's certainly a well-written one, with funny dialogue and a genuinely good story, but it's just not as fun as a lot of other Mario games. The 2D gameplay with the 3D flipping gimmick is decent for the most part, but the platforming isn't as fun as it is in more traditional Mario titles. The combat is nothing special but it's serviceable and fun enough. Being able to switch between different characters on the fly is nice though, and getting to play as Bowser is pretty cool.

Really, I was having fun most of the time but there's just some stretches of gameplay that are a chore to get through. The quality of the different chapters varies quite substantially. One particularly funny one sees Princess Peach stuck in a dating sim with a chameleon, but another is a tedious combat marathon of running to a platform in the middle of a room, beating an opponent, and running to the next room over and over. I wish this was a more consistent game, but as it is some bits just aren't fun enough.

Moving away from gameplay, I've got to say that the story is good in Super Paper Mario. I wouldn't say it's amazing, as some of its power of love elements feel a little simple. There's a lot of well written dialogue though that bring the characters to life. Mario's silent throughout but his companions have some funny things to say. The music is also solid, as you'd probably expect from a Mario game. Visually, it's got a decent style but it's nothing spectacular.

After finishing the game, I'd say getting through its weaker parts was worth it in the end as it has a strong ending with good boss fights and a sweet ending to the story that mostly gets away with its simple love trumps all message.
