Probably the best 3D Mario game. I liked Galaxy, but Galaxy 2 just knocks it out of the park for me. The environments are great, the green stars are a fun addition to the end game, and the Perfect Run is a great way to test everything you've learned through the game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes Super Mario Galaxy 1 and expands upon it much better without taking away or changing anything that made the first game unique, while also adding much more stuff that still held the charm the first game had. The music is also fantastic and the ideas and concepts with the powerups make every galaxy unique and outstanding, there is no filler, and there is so much time that can be applied to this game from the hundreds of stars in the game. Boss fights are also incredible as well, but I can go on for hours about the level design. The gameplay doesn't offer as many mechanics compared to all the other 3d mario games (ofc excluding galaxy 1) but this enhances the level design, so you can experience them with multiple items rather than rushing through the game, though it wouldn't be since people would still be mesmerized after looking at the galaxies. Still, mario's movement is still great overall. There really aren't any issues with this game that I found except that people could find it slow or long, but I enjoyed the experience the whole way through so it wasn't a problem to me. Expand

The whole adventure is a fantastic fun experience that shows once again why Mario is again king of platforming, but the problem is that the game is not as exciting as it could be due to the fact that it still remains very similar to the first game, and in some aspects it does things a little worse and too simple, which are the storyline and the ship that takes you to the galaxies. And for those that say this is actually a harder sequel, I honestly felt it was in the same difficulty of the first game and even with certain bosses, easier. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a definite purchase for me before it was even released. After beating the first game and grabbing every star with Mario AND Luigi I couldn't wait for more new challenges in the sequel.
Overall I gotta say this game delivered absolutely everything I expected and more. Yoshi is a fun new addition to the gameplay and adds a new dimension to the style of the game which at this point I never thought could be done considering all the new things i've experienced already.
Also i'm super stoked that my boy Luigi still gets to have some fun once in a while.
Mario's new power-ups are very practical and open up lots of new possibilities that still manage to set the bar higher than the first game had (my fave is the rock). The absence of Rosalina is a breath of fresh air because she was just plain creepy and not worth having around, what would you expect from someone who's stuck on a ship eating starbits forever she always seemed ready to commit suicide.

Having said all this so far, I feel like pretty much everyone giving 10's on their reviews are seeing something I haven't. I currently have 91 stars and feel like this game is not better than the first but rather a direct sequel. At one point for about 2 weeks I would have much preferred to play something else because galaxy 2 wasn't anything Universally PHENOMINAL like everyone suggests. I'm hoping that something incredible is in store for me as I get into the last quarter of the game and it isn't a case of me thinking nothing is good enough anymore. My biggest problem is that the game throws quite a few softballs and dishes out too many 1up mushrooms, at one point a ghost version of Rosalina asked me if I would like her to "direct me to the power star" after dying a few times on a quick mini game. I felt like shoving a bobomb up her ass. The bosses are more unique and entertaining but I prefer the bosses that piss me off a bit more and are more satisfying to kill like in Galaxy 1. Overall I know that once i'm finished with this game that i'll be sad it's over and want even more, but the more I play, the more I wonder why it's considered to be WAY better than the first game. It's a fantastic game no doubt, probably better for a first time galaxy player, but an absolute MUST HAVE for any nintendo/mario fanatic. You gotta play this game (and the first) to experience the second coming of the Ocarina of Time feeling of amazingness. Nintendo did everything right with the Galaxy series. PLAY IT!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Galaxy 2 has the best level design ever imagined and realised. No surprise there, but unfortunately what prevents this game from getting full marks is the dreadful resemblance with its predecessor. It's like continuing playing the past game, and even if there are a lot of new elements, there is nothing (unlike past Mario games) that really redefines the gameplay.
One of the best technical showing of WII, MG2 is entertaining from the beginning to the end and beyond, where you have to collect green stars shattered around the levels to completely beat the game. Which is actually almost impossible to do, but I'll let this pleasure to you to find out.
The game remains easy, even if not like the predecessor, and we really miss the impossible levels of other platformers from Nintendo. The pace is always right, the challenges always different one another and the overall resulting experience one of the best you can get in this generation. Boring transfers from one world to the other have been eliminated and now the hub is smaller and more navigable, shrinking dead times to the minimum.
If you have a WII it is a must have, but SMG2 fails to be a cross-age game, turning itself into a myth for younger players but just an amazing and polished time consumer for grown ups, which will eventually always prefer Super Mario 64.

The sequel does well and even better than its predecessor! I would've given it a perfect score if only they included a hub area instead of a map-based level system, but that's only a minuscule element to worry about, as the levels in this sequel are much more challenging and much more fun! Well done on the sequel Nintendo!

An advantage it has overt Galaxy 1 is that it's more direct into game without much de-tours in the open world, however that could be also seen as a disadvantage since it makes it too simplistic in terms of the open world but I guess it made sense if one assumes everyone that plays this already played Galaxy 1 which is the most likely scenario.

personally, I do prefer the first one to this for several reasons, the biggest one is I don't particularly like the overworld map used here. I prefer the style of Mario64 and the first Galaxy-game, where you have a hub you can explore, where the worlds are connected, it gives off a more exploratory feeling. here I feel things are a bit dumbed down, where you just travel from world to world in a much more simplified manner.

but this is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things though, as the game is fantastic, and everyone who's a fan of the genre should play it.

This one really improved on the original. Once again, only a couple of issues. One being that logic failed the title of the game. On top of this, most of the classic items from Galaxy 1, including the bee and spring mushrooms, return in a few levels.
One of the best new features of the game is hidden collectibles. Firstly, each galaxy has a comet medal, which must be collected to unlock a prankster comet at another galaxy (which work similarly to in Galaxy 1). This gives exploration more of a purpose than it had in the previous game. There are also the green stars, unlocked after collecting all of the normal stars in the game. These allow you to replay levels searching for these stars. While many are not too hard to locate and collect, they add to the game's length and provide a fun challenge. 2-player costar mode. As well as collecting star bits and stunning enemies, as before, the second player can now actually defeat enemies, making it a much more enjoyable experience for the second player.
Despite this, I still prefer the original game over this. The soundtrack, while good, is no match for Galaxy 1's, and I feel that the level design is not as good in this game. Again, it is still very good, however, Galaxy 2 has too many 2D sections, which often feel out of place in a game that should be about exploration and an open world.
In short, this game is amazing and definitely worth playing if you haven't already; it doesn't quite match up to the brilliance of the original game, but is a worthy sequel nonetheless.

    Pros:
+ Gameplay: Pretty great, though I definitely missed the diving option in this game.
+ Soundtrack: Amazing, but overrated (just like Galaxy 1's)
+ Enemy Variety: I mean, it's basic Mario enemies, but what's more memorable than a Goomba or a Koopa?
+ Yoshi: It's Yoshi, ok? Yoshi is amazing, especially with the infinite flutter glitch.
+ Puzzle Plank Galaxy: ...It's an amazing level, ok?

    Mix:
= Level Design: While the levels are FAR from bad, except for the ball ones, those are atrocious. Plus, the levels aren't too memorable, however I can still remember quite a number of them (like Supermassive Galaxy and Throwback Galaxy).
= Graphics: For a game from 2010, they aren't necessarily bad, but I guarantee there were better looking games from that time.
= Story: OH WOW, I'M JUDGING THE STORY OF A MARIO GAME!1!!!!!1!11! Yeah, it's the same story from Galaxy 1.

    Cons:
    - Motion Controls: While not the worst on the Wii, that goes to probably some shovelware game, the ball levels warrant it as a con.
    - Stuff is Reused from Galaxy 1, A LOT: Ok, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the ending of the game was just fanservice (though the good kind of fanservice). Despite being a sequel, it reused a lot. However, this is more of a nitpick because there were enough differences between the two to call this game a sequel more than v1.5.

Overall, the game is amazing and warrants a 9/10 from me. In my opinion, it's better than Galaxy 1.

The post-game content adds a brand new world, filled with brand new difficult stages, filled with class throwbacks. After you collect all 120 stars, you can go back and explore each galaxy again, to find hidden green stars. These require you to search everywhere, as some of them are really hidden. After you collect all of them, you unlock one final galaxy, The Grandmaster Galaxy. This is a very difficult stage, which requires all of your skills in order to complete it and collect the final 2 stars, which brings the total of stars in the game to 242. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a must play for any Mario fan. The large amount of fun and difficult platforming really requires you to use your new moves and brand new power-ups. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the Wii's amazing masterpieces. Starting off, the story is kind of like the first one. Starts off casual, go through the first screens then BOOM! Bowser appears and the Mushroom Kingdom is destroyed, and Bowser takes Princess Peach. Then almost immediately after, you're jumped into the first mission of the game. The game has most of the time goes pretty fast, the game does slow down a little or sometimes a lot, but normally it picks back up within in hour or 2, depending on how good you are. The game also has taken powerups and other things from the other game and add in new stuff. Such as the new powerups they added like the Cloud Flower. A very good (and very broken) powerup that lets Mario not only jump higher. But he can create 3 platforms out of thin air. Or the Spin Drill which lets Mario tunnel through dirt with ease. Another thing that makes the game very good is the difficulty. It isn't hard like Dark Souls or Cuphead, far from it. But the difficulty spike definitely increases by a lot. As there is more difficult platforming, more dangerous enemies, the whole shabang. The bosses are also interesting. Every world it switches between Bowser Jr, (Bowser's son), and Bowser himself, Bowser Jr has a totally new thing for the player to face against, while Bowser himself is a different story. It has the same battlefield, but Bowser's attacks either are more deadly, or it takes more hits to defeat him. Despite it being the same, it always feels fresh. In addition, the levels in the game are incredible. The music, the feel, and the objectives fit almost always. One of my favorites is the Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, it feels like going on a treasure hunt for the Power Star, with deadly spikes, crushing hammers, the stuff you would find out of an Indiana Jones movie. There are also stars known as Prankster Comets, there's one in every stage, they either create a new star entirely, or they take a normal mission and add an extra challenge, like there's a time limit on how long you can be in the world until you die, or if you get hit once you die, they add an extra challenge that makes an old level feel fresh and challenging. However there are a few that I dislike and feel either bland, incomplete, or just downright stupid. One of those is Battle Belt Galaxy, one of the most infamous galaxies in the game. All you do is kill all the enemies on the planet, go to the next one, rinse and repeat about 8 times and you got the Power Star. It's less fun then it sounds. Another thing most people don't talk about is completing the game. Completing video games all the way through tends to be more of an endurance challenge then actual difficulty. This is where my biggest problem of the game comes in. After getting the 121st Power Star, the game introduces a new thing to the player and the protagonist. Green Stars, there are 2 - 3 in each world, the game goes from fast paced and you saying "YES! I got another Power Star!" To, "Ugh, another friggin star. Yay..." Every Green Star is hidden in every world, your only hints are the start of the mission where it shows you where to go to get the Power Star you already got, and a sound clue that signifies that you're near one. You have to do this is EVERY world other then the last one. You need all 241 stars, 9999 Star Bits (the games main currency) In the bank. You get the final challenge, which is dubbed to be one of the hardest levels in the entire Mario franchise. And they're right, if you complete this level. Then your a gaming wizard. No doubt. Other then that complaint, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a great game that has aged super well and will continue to be an incredible game til' the end of time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw the trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2 a decade ago when I was a dumb little 1st Grader, I lost my **** My favorite video game of all time was getting a sequel!! When I finally managed to get it for Christmas that year, of course I loved it! This game means so much to me, because it was always there for me whenever I had a bad day at school. It also explains why it's one of my most played games ever. (let alone Mario games) Thank you Nintendo for such a wonderful game.

...oh what? I guess I got too nostalgic for a moment. Sorry. Anyway, why is the game so good you ask? Well, I will admit that it's not quite as good as the first one, but it's still incredible.

The one downside to this game is that plot-wise, there's not nearly as much as there was previously. Rosalina barely shows up in this one, and that's kinda sad. Instead we get Lubba, who's honestly a guilty pleasure to me. However, this was the one and only aspect that disappointed me, because everything else was a blast from beginning to end!

The gameplay is either slightly superior or slightly inferior. In other words, I love the game just as much as I did previously. They improved the Prankster Comets and made them a lot more fun and challenging, they added awesome new power-ups, and...is that Yoshi!? Using his own power-ups!?!? These games just had so many good ideas, and that's to be expected, because Nintendo said that they couldn't even use all the ideas for the first game, so they just straight up said, here's another. The level design is far more linear than the first game's, so there aren't many places where you walk on spherical planets anymore. I don't mind this change at all, it makes it seem more like Mario's home style, and I like that a lot.

There's not a lot to say in terms of presentation, so...this game still looks phenomenal. Noticeably, it's a bit more colorful and bright than the first game's more gloomy approach. The soundtrack? Yep. Still just as perfect as ever before.

However, this game, like the first, ain't perfect either. One thing for me is how this game helps you just a little too much. You can get 1-ups all over the place, and Rosalina (in the form of a Cosmic Spirit) will literally guide you right to the Power Star if you fail too much. However, this is completely optional, and only came off as annoying at worst since I never used her guidance. Also, some of the galaxies in this game were rather lazy, specifically in World S. (Mario Squared, Stone Cyclone, Boss Blitz, etc.) I never hated these levels, because they were at least fun to revisit from the first game. The Green Stars are also kinda tedious, I'll admit, but at the same time, I thought they were really fun to find, as they make you search around the galaxy and discover places you might not have before.

I really wanted to give this game a 10 like the first, but I think these little issues barely set the game back a point. Still, I love this game a lot, and it one of my favorite games ever, let alone Mario games. It introduces so many ideas that work just as well as the first game overall. Please don't call this game a copy-paste sequel, because while it uses the same engine, that's it for the most part. (That argument fits much more for the New Super Mario Bros. and Call of Duty series)

    - the drill item is fun to use - yoshi is so fun to use. - the visual, level, obstacle, enemy, and platforming design was incredibly creative. - I like how the devs transitioned the pink moving platformers into 3D - star ball stages are fun - the platform flip using the spin attack was creative and fun. - leading bomb-omb to blow up the glass ball was creative

    - more creative gravity levels

    - instead of just collecting coins for a star. Galaxy 2 has you to collect stars then a new planet is born, where there’s a bit of extra gameplay for you to collect the star.

    Bad

    - I prefer the hub world in galaxy 1, cause it felt like a home, and going into different rooms to enter levels. The classic hub world layout in galaxy 2 feels too concrete and boring.

    - the game is brain dead easy. Only thing that kept me going through the levels was the amusing, creative platforming. And the unique level, enemy, and obstacle designs.

    - Where’s Rosalina? I connected a lot with her in the first game from her life story in her story book. Now she’s nowhere in galaxy 2?

While the original Galaxy has a great sense of atmosphere Galaxy 2 has far better level design and replaces the weaker mechanics from the first game with better ones along with the amazing addition of Yoshi makes's this game a lot more fun. The smaller hub world is a lot more fun to explore as all the good stuff is a lot closer together and the addition of a simple "world map" to get from level to level makes the game flow a lot better. If you loved the first Super Mario Galaxy, you will adore the sequel.
  2. While Super Mario Galaxy 2 could easily have been a cheap cash-in with a few lackluster additional levels, it manages to be something more. It expands on the gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy and adds enough new twists and turns to feel like a full-fledged sequel.
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is largely more of the same, and that helps make it a phenomenal experience. Nintendo didn't reinvent the formula. Instead, it took what fans loved about the prequel and then jazzed everything up with never before seen galaxies, planets and a more streamlined user interface.
