The Super Mario Galaxy franchise is by far my most adored one of all time. Both titles are my most favorite games of all time. The gameplay, theme, score, atmosphere, it all converges to an experience I'd want every single person who has never touched a video game before to have, because I'm convinced it will make them love video games from that point on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first saw the trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2 a decade ago when I was a dumb little 1st Grader, I lost my **** My favorite video game of all time was getting a sequel!! When I finally managed to get it for Christmas that year, of course I loved it! This game means so much to me, because it was always there for me whenever I had a bad day at school. It also explains why it's one of my most played games ever. (let alone Mario games) Thank you Nintendo for such a wonderful game.

...oh what? I guess I got too nostalgic for a moment. Sorry. Anyway, why is the game so good you ask? Well, I will admit that it's not quite as good as the first one, but it's still incredible.

The one downside to this game is that plot-wise, there's not nearly as much as there was previously. Rosalina barely shows up in this one, and that's kinda sad. Instead we get Lubba, who's honestly a guilty pleasure to me. However, this was the one and only aspect that disappointed me, because everything else was a blast from beginning to end!

The gameplay is either slightly superior or slightly inferior. In other words, I love the game just as much as I did previously. They improved the Prankster Comets and made them a lot more fun and challenging, they added awesome new power-ups, and...is that Yoshi!? Using his own power-ups!?!? These games just had so many good ideas, and that's to be expected, because Nintendo said that they couldn't even use all the ideas for the first game, so they just straight up said, here's another. The level design is far more linear than the first game's, so there aren't many places where you walk on spherical planets anymore. I don't mind this change at all, it makes it seem more like Mario's home style, and I like that a lot.

There's not a lot to say in terms of presentation, so...this game still looks phenomenal. Noticeably, it's a bit more colorful and bright than the first game's more gloomy approach. The soundtrack? Yep. Still just as perfect as ever before.

However, this game, like the first, ain't perfect either. One thing for me is how this game helps you just a little too much. You can get 1-ups all over the place, and Rosalina (in the form of a Cosmic Spirit) will literally guide you right to the Power Star if you fail too much. However, this is completely optional, and only came off as annoying at worst since I never used her guidance. Also, some of the galaxies in this game were rather lazy, specifically in World S. (Mario Squared, Stone Cyclone, Boss Blitz, etc.) I never hated these levels, because they were at least fun to revisit from the first game. The Green Stars are also kinda tedious, I'll admit, but at the same time, I thought they were really fun to find, as they make you search around the galaxy and discover places you might not have before.

I really wanted to give this game a 10 like the first, but I think these little issues barely set the game back a point. Still, I love this game a lot, and it one of my favorite games ever, let alone Mario games. It introduces so many ideas that work just as well as the first game overall. Please don't call this game a copy-paste sequel, because while it uses the same engine, that's it for the most part. (That argument fits much more for the New Super Mario Bros. and Call of Duty series)

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of Mario's best console ventures in 3D. The plumber is once again in space, but this time, with numerous differences. Not in gameplay though.

In terms of how the game plays, well, it's more or less just more Mario Galaxy, just more polished and with more varying level design throughout. The game also introduces Yoshi, which is a fine addition to gameplay, though it is worth pointing out the broken nature of Yoshi's infinite flutter jump. Glitches aside, it's fun enough to use the dinosaur.

The hub world is notably smaller than the Comet Observatory from the last game. While there is much more going on in the tiny frame of the Starship Mario, the Observatory was just a much bigger and funner hub world to explore and run around in to Galaxy 2's.

Another thing worth noting is the lack of very much continuity between Galaxy 1 and Galaxy 2. While 1 has a deep narrative and real storytelling, 2 drops this entire theme for a more typical/linear Mario game. Seeing what Galaxy 1 did and how well it did it, 2's exclusion of any deeper narrative or themes seems rather unnecessary and served to dampen the experience, as with an actual narrative to the game there's a reward for playing through. Some might say gameplay is the reward, but when said gameplay is basically entirely the same as the original game's, I want a little more to the game than just the gameplay when 1 had both that and a driving narrative.

And as I said there, the gameplay between both games isn't very different at all. It's more or less just Mario Galaxy 1 but labeled 2.

Overall, Galaxy 2 manages to be a fun game, but lacks the narrative of the original Galaxy while still just being more of the same gameplay. (Not bad gameplay, just nothing new besides Yoshi)

Increasing the challenge of levels, better designed levels, and adding Yoshi keeps this game as interesting as the first one. The quality of music is just as fantastic as the first game. Basically my feelings on this game are pretty two-sided. The good things about this game include the varied levels, cool new power-ups, and------ the best part------ music that isn't as instantly classic and nostalgia-inducing as the first, but honestly some of the tracks (Melty Molten, Space Storm, Cloudy Court, Slipsand) are just EPIC and go toe-to-toe with some of the original's tracks. And it's neat how they recreated music from the older Mario games (Haunty Halls, Yoshi Falls, Supermassive).
Probably my lower opinion of this game is all because I played Galaxy 1 first as a young kid, and I just can't let go of the magic that game brought to my little mind. I was much older when I played 2. Overall, I guess the number one reason for my iffyness on this game is that it is quite forgettable in my opinion. Haters might be mad for me saying that, but for whatever reason I have almost no recollection of actually enjoying this game in even close to the way I enjoyed the first. Not a bad game by any standards though and you should definitely play it, because as a mario game it gives you pretty much everything you could ever want. Just don't expect to be blown away and intrigued by the story or atmosphere, or even really the gameplay, as much of it is in 2D and seems to just kind of pointlessly decorate what Galaxy 1 already did while incorporating some older mario game elements like getting to ride Yoshi, which was actually pretty cool. Basically this game is just Mario 64 in outer space if you ask me... except half the time you can't even tell you're in outer space.I would say that the galaxies in this game whose feel and texture came closest to the mysterious feel of the original were, for me, Slipsand Galaxy, Cosmic Cove Galaxy, Starshine Beach Galaxy, anddddd that's about it. The music still stands as this game's strongest point for me. I would definitely replay if and when I got the chance. From an objective standpoint I would say 2 is almost as good as 1 if viewed as just another 3D Mario game. However, compared to 1 and viewed as something that had the potential to top the first game, it fails completely. I'm pretty sure this game isn't even in the same league as Galaxy 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the Wii's amazing masterpieces. Starting off, the story is kind of like the first one. Starts off casual, go through the first screens then BOOM! Bowser appears and the Mushroom Kingdom is destroyed, and Bowser takes Princess Peach. Then almost immediately after, you're jumped into the first mission of the game. The game has most of the time goes pretty fast, the game does slow down a little or sometimes a lot, but normally it picks back up within in hour or 2, depending on how good you are. The game also has taken powerups and other things from the other game and add in new stuff. Such as the new powerups they added like the Cloud Flower. A very good (and very broken) powerup that lets Mario not only jump higher. But he can create 3 platforms out of thin air. Or the Spin Drill which lets Mario tunnel through dirt with ease. Another thing that makes the game very good is the difficulty. It isn't hard like Dark Souls or Cuphead, far from it. But the difficulty spike definitely increases by a lot. As there is more difficult platforming, more dangerous enemies, the whole shabang. The bosses are also interesting. Every world it switches between Bowser Jr, (Bowser's son), and Bowser himself, Bowser Jr has a totally new thing for the player to face against, while Bowser himself is a different story. It has the same battlefield, but Bowser's attacks either are more deadly, or it takes more hits to defeat him. Despite it being the same, it always feels fresh. In addition, the levels in the game are incredible. The music, the feel, and the objectives fit almost always. One of my favorites is the Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, it feels like going on a treasure hunt for the Power Star, with deadly spikes, crushing hammers, the stuff you would find out of an Indiana Jones movie. There are also stars known as Prankster Comets, there's one in every stage, they either create a new star entirely, or they take a normal mission and add an extra challenge, like there's a time limit on how long you can be in the world until you die, or if you get hit once you die, they add an extra challenge that makes an old level feel fresh and challenging. However there are a few that I dislike and feel either bland, incomplete, or just downright stupid. One of those is Battle Belt Galaxy, one of the most infamous galaxies in the game. All you do is kill all the enemies on the planet, go to the next one, rinse and repeat about 8 times and you got the Power Star. It's less fun then it sounds. Another thing most people don't talk about is completing the game. Completing video games all the way through tends to be more of an endurance challenge then actual difficulty. This is where my biggest problem of the game comes in. After getting the 121st Power Star, the game introduces a new thing to the player and the protagonist. Green Stars, there are 2 - 3 in each world, the game goes from fast paced and you saying "YES! I got another Power Star!" To, "Ugh, another friggin star. Yay..." Every Green Star is hidden in every world, your only hints are the start of the mission where it shows you where to go to get the Power Star you already got, and a sound clue that signifies that you're near one. You have to do this is EVERY world other then the last one. You need all 241 stars, 9999 Star Bits (the games main currency) In the bank. You get the final challenge, which is dubbed to be one of the hardest levels in the entire Mario franchise. And they're right, if you complete this level. Then your a gaming wizard. No doubt. Other then that complaint, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a great game that has aged super well and will continue to be an incredible game til' the end of time. Expand

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is surprisingly even more polished and better designed than its superb predecessor. This was clearly a work of love done by people that really comprehend what makes action platformers, and Mario games in particular, so fascinating to play. The game is fun and exciting from the beginning to the end, progressing at a breezy pacing, with some fast paced levels and none too slow paced or too difficult. It even has an easy-to-navigate map that, like in the 2D classics, lets you fly right into the next level, giving it a more addictive non-stop action feel, when compared to past 3D Mario games, by focusing on what's important: stomping goombas and going through the extremely engaging levels.

    VISUALS ( 10 out of 10 )
Best graphics of any game for the Wii.

    SOUND ( 10 out of 10 )
Amazing and wide-ranging soundtrack that skilfully mixes old tunes with new compositions and always fits the action perfectly.

    VALUE ( 10 out of 10 )
The amount of variety in Galaxy 2 is astounding – more so than in any other action platformer that came before it. Every level has its own unique gameplay mechanics and activities, all very fun and none feels made in a hurry, so you never know what novelties come next and they never stop coming. Even the power-ups are more and better used than ever in this game, being Yoshi the most noteworthy of them all. There are 242 stars to collect, most of them challenging enough to satisfy even the most skilled gamers, providing some of the most gratifying moments you can have in a video-game.

    FINAL SCORE ( 10 out of 10 )
In my opinion, Galaxy 2 is the most fun, inventive, varied, beautiful and absorbing Action Platformer of all time. The concept behind the creation of Galaxy 2 is an extension of the first Galaxy's concept, so it can't possibly have the same impact. But what makes Galaxy 2 so great and what will keep you coming back, even after you've collected every star, is the expertly designed levels, with an incredible amount of variety, a constantly changing pace due to excellent mix of 3D and 2D gameplay and the great number of different power-ups, mechanics and activities, all smartly placed, delightful and interesting, level after level after level after level… leaving you breathless and full of joy!

Gameplay is sharp as always and the music alone deserves an award, visuals are colourful and vibrant, and have aged well despite being a fairly old game on 15 year old hardware. The cartoony shiny graphics and Mario's goofy face will bring a smile to the face of just about anyone with a semblance of soul.
The few changes to the gameplay include a few new powerups (the rock mushroom, cloud flower, and ghost mushroom), while removing the ice flower from the previous game along with one elusive end game bonus. The biggest additions, however, would be Luigi being made available halfway through the game and selectable from the hub world, and YOSHI, who is a joy to play as and comes with his own set of powerups and mechanics.
The downsides that make this game maybe a 0.1 point worse than the original for me are a massive reduction of the story, hub world, and level complexity. If you were hoping for another Little Prince-esque adventure like the original, prepare to be let down as all you're getting is the basic mario plot and a fat floating Patrick Star. The hub world, rather than being a massive flying castle is now just a small starship shaped like Mario's face (no I'm not lying) which, while more packed and compact, feels less epic. An upside however is that the new more barebones map screen makes it easier to just jump in and play the game. Lastly the levels, while just as good, are much shorter and less sprawling
In conclusion, Mario Galaxy 2 is still an absolute masterpiece and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone owning a Wii

personally, I do prefer the first one to this for several reasons, the biggest one is I don't particularly like the overworld map used here. I prefer the style of Mario64 and the first Galaxy-game, where you have a hub you can explore, where the worlds are connected, it gives off a more exploratory feeling. here I feel things are a bit dumbed down, where you just travel from world to world in a much more simplified manner.

but this is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things though, as the game is fantastic, and everyone who's a fan of the genre should play it.

I love this game with a burning passion... it's my childhood! However, it isn't my nostalgia that is forcing me give this game an outstanding score, but rather that Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Wii is an absolute masterpiece.

I played this game before the original, and going back to the first game, I still had a great time, as it's still an excellent game, but it felt less addictive and generally good as the sequel. Anyone who says this is a watered - down sequel is not doing the game justice. It is superior in almost every way.

The graphics are some of the best on the Wii, resembling it's predecessors' hugely, but with more variety in it's environments. It looks smooth, detailed and downright whimsical, from Yoshi's bright blue eyes, to the stellar space backgrounds, to a gleaming gold power star, Galaxy 2 looks brilliant. Likewise, the music is as heart - wringing and beautiful as the original. The tunes are even better, and fit with the general atmosphere well. Even old tunes are remixed or improved, with a chilling vocal chord or some extra instruments sound.

Story? Minimal and never distracts from the action. Follows the same trope as all other Mario games, and the tale is told in a memorable and cute way, with quirky side characters prepared with helpful, funny and well - written dialogue. Captain Toad, Lubba and the adorable penguins were some of my favourites. The dialogue that is there is well - voiced, and it does build up tension in a way the you are bursting in anticipation by the final boss fight.

But the gameplay is where it's at. I don't think I can do it justice, but I'll have a try - and it's brilliant. Constantly shaking it up with new mechanics that are always super enjoyable, and slowly building on them to test your skill by the end of the level. Power - ups that make Mario have new abilities ( a staple of the Mario series in general). 2D levels, challenges, and even YOSHI! With his own power - ups and enjoyments, he has fully featured levels as the duo try and nab more Power Stars!, Boss Fights with threats and mechanics that make them the some of best in the series, and an endless variety of enemies. Traditional levels, open levels... Damn. You can play through all of this with a great control scheme which makes great use of both the point an motion sensor, and another player can hop along in the form of an orange Luma! The Hub is smaller, sure, but is packed with stuff to do. And so is this game. Seriously. Among Prankster Comets, and the many Green Stars, this game has SO MUCH for you to do.

And you know what? The best thing to do is just play it - this review is merely the tip of the iceberg. Your kids must play this, they will remember it fondly as they grow up, and besides, it's the perfect game to help your kids develop a taste for the colourful, child - friendly Nintendo, a company that makes games so fun I'd never play any dismal, grey shooter. Prepare to be amazed - you will (if you buy it) experience the best game ever made.

It sees Mario on small planets, and the camera doesn't follow you around well, so you'll be at the bottom of a planet with your head facing down, and pressing forward on the control stick moves Mario toward the camera instead of away from it. It is very disorienting, and I am a serious gamer, and I couldn't cope with the controls and quit after 5 hours. So I didn't have high hopes for Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm happy to report that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a much better game than the first one! The sections where you are on small planets are fewer in number and somehow easier to handle. The platforming is great and controls well. Mario gets special abilities from mushrooms like a cloud mushroom that allows him to create up to 3 cloud platforms whenever he double-jumps. There's also a bee mushroom that allows him to fly/float for a short period of time. There are many others, and they all contribute to excellent platforming puzzles. The bosses are fun challenges in figuring out their weaknesses.

The only negatives I had about this game were the gates, repeated sections, and difficulty. At the end of each world, you collect a star. To progress in the game, you'll need to have a certain number of stars to pass the artificial star gate even though you've beaten all of the levels leading up to it. You are forced to go back to the previous levels and beat them again to find the alternative exits and their stars. This is unnecessary backtracking that's not as much fun as experiencing the levels for the first time, and beating a level only to find you have to go back and do 10 more levels to find stars is frustrating. I did go back because it was fun and I wanted to see what new levels were in store for Mario, but it is still an issue. When you finally do make it to the last level, the difficulty ramps up extremely, and I lost all of my lives many, many times in the last galaxies where I hadn't lost all of my lives at all leading up to it. The difficulty curve will be unfair to the little kids that had been enjoying the game up to that point.

Overall, I would recommend Super Mario Galaxy 2 to anyone who likes platformers, as it is the best one on the Wii. 7/10

The worlds are more fun to play, the new power-ups are super fun and are built around certain galaxies (especially the Cloud Flower), the music is even better, and to bring people to a road down memory lane, they remade Thwomp's Fortress from Super Mario 64 and renamed it Throwback Galaxy. An advantage it has overt Galaxy 1 is that it's more direct into game without much de-tours in the open world, however that could be also seen as a disadvantage since it makes it too simplistic in terms of the open world but I guess it made sense if one assumes everyone that plays this already played Galaxy 1 which is the most likely scenario.

    Pros:
+ Gameplay: Pretty great, though I definitely missed the diving option in this game.
+ Soundtrack: Amazing, but overrated (just like Galaxy 1's)
+ Enemy Variety: I mean, it's basic Mario enemies, but what's more memorable than a Goomba or a Koopa?
+ Yoshi: It's Yoshi, ok? Yoshi is amazing, especially with the infinite flutter glitch.
+ Puzzle Plank Galaxy: ...It's an amazing level, ok?

    Mix:
= Level Design: While the levels are FAR from bad, except for the ball ones, those are atrocious. Plus, the levels aren't too memorable, however I can still remember quite a number of them (like Supermassive Galaxy and Throwback Galaxy).
= Graphics: For a game from 2010, they aren't necessarily bad, but I guarantee there were better looking games from that time.
= Story: OH WOW, I'M JUDGING THE STORY OF A MARIO GAME!1!!!!!1!11! Yeah, it's the same story from Galaxy 1.

    Cons:
    - Motion Controls: While not the worst on the Wii, that goes to probably some shovelware game, the ball levels warrant it as a con.
    - Stuff is Reused from Galaxy 1, A LOT: Ok, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the ending of the game was just fanservice (though the good kind of fanservice). Despite being a sequel, it reused a lot. However, this is more of a nitpick because there were enough differences between the two to call this game a sequel more than v1.5.

Overall, the game is amazing and warrants a 9/10 from me. In my opinion, it's better than Galaxy 1.

If you loved the first Super Mario Galaxy, you will adore the sequel.
  2. While Super Mario Galaxy 2 could easily have been a cheap cash-in with a few lackluster additional levels, it manages to be something more. It expands on the gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy and adds enough new twists and turns to feel like a full-fledged sequel.
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is largely more of the same, and that helps make it a phenomenal experience. Nintendo didn't reinvent the formula. Instead, it took what fans loved about the prequel and then jazzed everything up with never before seen galaxies, planets and a more streamlined user interface.
