    A very entertaining and fun experience that you'd never expect to be on the Wii of all things. The best part of the game are the characters. Travis Touchdown is an enjoyable protagonist with a lot of fun banter between himself and the other characters in the game. Sylvia falls into the category of "Mysterious characters that you can't stop obsessing over". Her past isn't explained thatA very entertaining and fun experience that you'd never expect to be on the Wii of all things. The best part of the game are the characters. All of the bosses have their own distinctive personalities and gimmicks that make each of them fun to fight. The world is so lively and bright with tons of things to interact with. But the thing that many argue over is the combat system. Many hail it as brilliant while others can't stand it. Personally, I belong to the former. I find it unbelievably satisfying to string up combos and slaughter hundreds of enemies. Overall, easily one of the most entertaining games of all time.… Expand

Travis es un asesino con espada láser que quiere cargarse al Top 10 de la lista de mejores asesinos para convertirse en el número 1. ConJuego muy bizarro, poco conocido por el público en general y con unos gráficos y jugabilidad muy sencillas. Sin embargo, es un juego único que cuenta con uno de los protagonistas más carismáticos y macarras de los videojuegos como es Travis Touchdown. Travis es un asesino con espada láser que quiere cargarse al Top 10 de la lista de mejores asesinos para convertirse en el número 1. Con esta premisa tan ridícula, hay que hacerse con suficiente dinero para ir a por cada asesino a través de distintas misiones secundarias y recados (algunos algo aburridos).     1) Hilarious 2) head bopping sound track 3) simple but intuitive controls 4) great art direction 5) tough but rewarding bosses

    I’ve always wanted to play the original No More Heroes games since I played Travis Strikes Again. I enjoyed my time with TSA, but I felt like I was missing out on the real experience. So when NMH 1 & 2 dropped on the Switch I was ecstatic and boy did NMH1 not disappoint.
    The story is... unconventional to say the least. It has a simple premise: You are Travis Touchdown and you have to kill    I’ve always wanted to play the original No More Heroes games since I played Travis Strikes Again. I enjoyed my time with TSA, but I felt like I was missing out on the real experience. So when NMH 1 & 2 dropped on the Switch I was ecstatic and boy did NMH1 not disappoint.
    The story is... unconventional to say the least. It has a simple premise: You are Travis Touchdown and you have to kill the ten highest ranked assassins and your reward is nailing the woman who orchestrated these fights. There are several fourth wall breaking jokes and the story never takes itself seriously. I’ve been playing a lot of story focused games like Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us Part II, and Yakuza 7. So to see a game that doesn’t take itself super seriously is weirdly refreshing. They even jokingly say that it won’t get a sequel, self awareness jokes are hit and miss for me personally, but Suda51 hits the mark on them.

    The Hack and Slash gameplay was addicting and as a huge wrestling fan it made me smile to see Travis pull off a Brain Buster and a DDT.
    I thought the graphics/art style complimented the tone very well. Don’t get me wrong I love games like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War that are known for their gorgeous scenery, but in my opinion sometimes having your own artistic style helps a game stand out more (like Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, I’m interested in it just for its aesthetics alone).
    I know a lot of people weren’t fond of the jobs, but personally I did not mind them as much. Except for the Scorpion and Mine removal jobs, those were just tedious. I think they’re a great way to prevent the game from feeling repetitive. Plus they get you money so you can buy clothes and more Beam Katanas to unlock the true ending so there is an incentive. That was one of my gripes with NMH2. All of the jobs were optional and you didn’t need them to participate in the rankings and I only used the dual wielding Katanas when I unlocked them so I didn’t switch them out. That’s how I noticed the game can be repetitive, but I’ll talk about that when I do a separate post for NMH2. Although I will say traveling to the job location was pretty boring, something that was fixed in the sequel, but again that’s for another post.

    Back to the Beam Katanas, my favorite would have to be the Tsubaki MK.II just because the design is so impractical, but I got so many multi kills in the “Kill 100 enemies in x amount of minutes” a classic “don’t judge a book by its cover” example.

    The bosses are some of the most colorful characters I have fought in a game. I often found myself coming up with new strategies. Like when fighting Dr. Peace I dodged/deflected bullets and rolled up behind him to attack. When I fought Bad Girl I didn’t even try to swing the gimps back to her (which sounds so weird now that I type it) or attack her when she was crying, I couldn’t risk it so I was patient, took my time, and attacked her when I was sure I had the right opportunity. Even Jeane was a whole other animal. The Beam Katana was useless and had to rely on melee attacks. So as far as battles go NMH has a wonderful series of boss battles. We only get to spend less then five minutes with them in the cutscenes, but they all standout with their over the top and eccentric personalities. Hell I could see some of them staring in their own games. How cool would a Destroyman prequel game be where he is the stereotypical hero, but slowly loses his mind as you progress. Or maybe Shinobu in a stealth/action spin-off.

    Lastly I want to talk about the performances. This in my opinion is Robin Atkin Downes best role. It’s thanks to him that I found Travis to be likable. Downes also shows the two sides of Travis: the nerdy otaku who just wants to be the best assassin in the world and the subtle honorable side of him who shows sympathy and respect to the people he killed (albeit he only shows this side when he kill woman). I also have to give a shout out to Josh Keaton as Destroyman. I think it’s funny that for a guy who’s well known for voicing iconic super heroes from Spider-Man to Green Lantern to recently Iron Man, he plays a parody of a hero in Destroyman who sounds like he is going to snap and go on a killing spree at any minute (although judging by how you meet him it looks like he already has).
    My only gripes with the game are small nitpicks. The aforementioned driving segments of the game was lackluster, but again they fixed that in the next game. Perhaps it just wasn’t meant for an open world style. My other nitpick is the camera there were a few times when it would get to close to me and the enemy which resulted in some awkward angles, but they weren’t really frequent so it didn’t ruin the experience. My last gripe (and again this is a nitpick) is that literally every time I got the cool slot power ups I only obtained them when there was only two enemies. Every. Single. Time.    … Expand

They might be clunky, at times, but they're fun as hell. The combat in this game is fast, aggressive, responsive, impactful and well done. I didn't mind hacking and slashing my way through thousands of repetitive enemies and somewhat bland environments simply due to how FUN it is to play No More Heroes.
    The golden coin of the combat system goes for the bosses. I have a feeling that if this were a boss rush, it could've been an even better experience. Every boss is well designed, amazingly presented, unique, challenging and entertaining. It was a joy to figure out their patterns and quirks. Quite a special feeling.

    The story can be very nonsensical, but, again, just pure FUN. It made me interested to see where it was going and how unpredictable it could get. Characters were colorful, eccentric and extremely creative. The writing is definitely shallow, but the visual spectacle and the comic book atmosphere you get makes up for it. I might be wrong, but the whole tale just had this Kill Bill vibe that sucked me into it. The humor was also a nice surprise.

    My complaints with No More Heroes are all on the techinical side.
    Framerate drops in games usually don't bother me, but they definitely did hurt me here. I know that they went for the Simpsons Hit & Run way of creating a semi-open world map, but I don't think it worked very well. Driving your motorcycle feels very clunky and the streets just aren't interesting enough. Most mini-games can be fun on the first time, but having to repeat them over and over in order to get money makes it tiresome. Were those things really necessary? Why not make it a more brief and concise game?
    And why the hell are there only, like, 10 songs in this soundtrack??? And they're not even very good!
    As for the story and main battle mechanics: The combat is VERY fun, but not very polished and although I liked the story and appreciate it for not taking itself seriously, that real ending was awful.

    Overall, No More Heroes might be the best experience I've had on the Wii, so far.
    Fun, fast, bloody and creative.
    I'm not sure how it plays on other platforms, but I can't recommend it enough, no matter where you taste it.    … Expand

    This game has a certain charm to it that is just hard to explain. The entire game feels ironic with it's narrative and jokes, but it was a great time with kickass music and enjoyable characters, but had a few issues with padding and fps

At first glance the game and even Travis himself might seem like an obnoxious Dead Pool type of thing, but as the game delves deeper into its story, it is obvious that there is a lot more going on than you might realise at first. A lot of Grasshopper Manufacture's games have been criticised for their lack of polish, and No More Heroes honestly isn't an exception. The game is now almost thirteen years old, and some of its age is starting to show. There's some pretty rough looking animations at times, occasional performance issues, some very jagged lighting and textures as well as some frustrating moments in combat. The graphics/art style is rather stylised instead of trying to go for realism however, so the graphics overall hold up better than a lot of other Wii games from the time do.

    The main aim of the game is to defeat the top ten ranking assassins in the world, which all happen to reside in Santa Destroy (the town the game takes place in), this funnily enough actually does make sense contextually. At first glance the plot might not seem like anything more than a wild, nonsensical trip, but all of the dialogue between the characters, and Travis’ subtle personality changes all represent something far greater in the scheme of things. It’s a very interesting story, even if you ignore the sub-text. There’s plenty of great character interactions and genuinely funny moments throughout the game – it’s definitely one of the funniest games I’ve played for a long while. Most of the game is spent doing ‘third-class’ jobs such as cleaning graffiti and picking up rubbish, as well as taking assassinations jobs to save up enough money to pay for the wager each ranking fight requires you to pay. These third class jobs are all intentionally dull and repetitive mini-games. I say intentionally because I really do feel like the character of Travis and the setting of the game represents the mundane reality most people live in. Santa Destroy is a mostly barren and boring town, it genuinely feels like getting lost in some crappy, dead-end suburb (although in saying that there is quite a lot of things to do while in the open world). And the whole game revolves around this formula – Travis the loser living a dull life works awful jobs so that he might try save up enough money for a fight, then make it big time in the assassination business, something he claims to live for. This formula is great, although I really wish the game would let you repeat missions if you fail them – having to drive a minute each way to a mission over and over again to try get a good rank is extremely frustrating, especially in the missions which end if you take ANY damage. This can get especially frustrating if failing the missions means you make no money, meaning you completely waste your time.

    The combat overall is simple, and for the most part very fun. Your 'beam katana' is your main way of damaging enemies and attacking with it will deplete its battery. Depending on how you hold the Wii remote you will either perform a high or low attack, depending on which of these stances you're in Travis will perform slightly different attack strings which some enemies can defend against, so you'll have to fluctuate between the two on and off. Normally damaging enemies doesn't always work however, and there's a multitude of ways you can go about it; you can try stunning enemies to perform wrestling moves, you can try knocking down enemies to then execute them, gain access to power ups by winning on the slots which sometimes roll after you get a kill, or you can try clashing swords with an enemy so you can then over-power them and instantly kill them - this also doubles as powerful crowd control attacks. The combat shines the most in its boss fights though. The games boss fights are the best part of the game, each of them have extremely vibrant and unique personalities and all have memorable battles which require you to learn their patterns and adapt to their fighting style. Apart from that, my only criticisms with combat are that there isn't enough enemy variety in the game, the dark step mechanic didn’t seem very well implemented – I barely needed to use it and when I did need to use it I found it clunky to use, and sometimes in combat you'll get completely ganged up on by enemies and will be unable to do much to help yourself.

    Much like many other Suda51 games, it has some glaring issues at times, but the positives far out-way the bad. It is one of his finest games, and certainly one of the best Wii games. A must play, but stay far away from the PS3 ports - and try playing the American version of the game, as the gore is censored in all other versions. Some cut scenes lose a lot of impact due to the censorship, and gameplay just feels less satisfying.    … Expand

    Great how the Wii remotes were used. A very simple story but you want to know more, charismatic characters, a fun gameplay, and graphically interesting. Maybe its weak point is the small and empty city through which we can travel its streets, it's not a GTA.

    The game has a very cool cell shaded art style that has helped it age quiet well. The game also did a fantastic job with the Wii remote. Myself only have the Wii U with the new Motion Plus controller but it works great.    If you own a Wii and love hack and slash games, this is a must own. The game follow Travis Touchdown as he battles his way to the number one assassin in Santa Destroy.

    The game has a very cool cell shaded art style that has helped it age quiet well. The game also did a fantastic job with the Wii remote. Myself only have the Wii U with the new Motion Plus controller but it works great. There isn't much as far as the motion control goes, you are able to aim high or low to change from a high a low stance which keeps things simple. The game also has a really cool retro game theme going on, a lot of sounds, visuals and themes play tribute to retro games.

    Some of the voice acting is cheesy and the game play can be repetitive. Most bosses are quiet similar with some variety with attacks, but all normal enemies are basically the same. You have three types. Unarmed, ones with a weapon (some type of pipe) and sword wielders. The story itself is pretty wacky, but fun. They did a great job with both the sound effects and music, I would like to get my hands on the soundtrack.

    Overall if you have a Wii or Wii U and really enjoy hack and slash games, this is a must buy, though they are a bit harder to find now a days.    … Expand

    No more heroes gives us Travis Touchdown, a 27-year-old Otaku put into the united assassins association to defeat 11 other assassins, Helter-Skelter, Death Metal, Dr. Peace, Shinobu, Destroyman, Holly Summers, Letz Shake, Harvey Moiseiwitsch Volodarskii, Speed Buster ,Bad Girl & Dark Star. Each with their own specials and kinks, and all for a fantastic showdown with a two twist bosses.

    Hands down, my favourite Wii game. The game is original, fun, at times, absolutely hilarious. The fact that No More Heroes doesn’t even take itself seriously is why this game is so unique. Every boss battle is memorable and the final boss, in the real ending, is arguably one of the most epic boss battles I have ever played in a game. Only reason why this game did not get a 10 from me isHands down, my favourite Wii game. The game is original, fun, at times, absolutely hilarious. The fact that No More Heroes doesn’t even take itself seriously is why this game is so unique. Every boss battle is memorable and the final boss, in the real ending, is arguably one of the most epic boss battles I have ever played in a game.     Another great title for the Wii. Satisfying beat em up gameplay and stylish graphics. No More Heroes is one of my favorites for the Wii because I really enjoy it's boss fights as it's refreshing to see boss fights to actually be challenging. Overall, I recommend picking this up if you have the WIi

If you own a Wii or even if you've just bought your self a shiny new Wii U do yourself a favour and buy this game! also buy it's sequel to because that is arguable the better game though i'd have to replay it again to say for certain.    … Expand

    This game is one of my favorite, but it has its problems: first, the homeworld can be boring and second the gameplay is boring. But the soundtrack, the story and the characters are awesome.

    The art style used in this game is great and doesn't try to make it look real. The story is great even though its not the first game to use it. The controls make great use of the Wii's motion control system and also use the speaker on the remote when you get a phone call. The use of 8-bit styles on the menu is unique considering it is a Suda 51 game. If you are looking for a fun game toThe art style used in this game is great and doesn't try to make it look real.     A unique combat style of gameplay, No More Heroes is a struggle between killing people and working off yoru debts with little odd jobs (mini-games). It offers good variety and a sense of connection between the player and the characters. But, the combat system felt weak in a lot of cases, as you tend to be more button mashing more than actually fighting your opponents. Still, a decent game to buy.

    Although I certainly cant recommend this game to everyone, No More Heroes will definitely make you brush the dust off of the Wii for a good couple of weeks. Game play is very simple yet compelling, wrapped up in some bizarre situations, characters and design. A must have for any Wii archive

I am going to break away from my GAME reviews to discuss two things I usually consider taboo in reviews: comparing this game to its sequel and examining other comments on metacritic. COMMENTS: notice that every negative review boils down to one of the following- general Wii hate, attacking the maturity of this game, or calling it bland and repetitive. Obviously general Wii Hate is worthless criticism. If someone hates the Wii as much as these reviewers why would they read reviews for Wii games? Attacking this game's maturity is like attacking Mario's physics, clearly they are missing the point. Last, and probably least, the action beat'em up genre is notorious for being repetitive so these criticisms are about as useful as Wii Hate. SEQUEL: Had I played this game first I would have given it a 10 without reservation. Un/fortunately Desperate Struggle (the sequel) improves on the series in so many ways- nostalgic minigames, better graphics, better intro, better physics, removed the faux sandbox, etc...- that looking at the two together is rough on the original. If you haven't played either I highly recommend playing No More Heroes and enjoying it madly for the great game it is all the while knowing you are in for an even better sequel!… Expand

    It's since been bettered by it's even more amazing sequel, but NMH is still astonishingly good. Seriously, if you're a hardcore gamer then Suda understands, and that is why you MUST buy this game along with NMH2.
