In a time when blockbuster releases commonly come out with game-breaking bugs, a major release from Nintendo is usually a breathe of fresh air. Smash Bros. absolutely follows this precedent.

There is great variety in character choices, stages, and a TON of unlockable/collectible content. And of course, the multiplayer both online and offline is amazing. Games with this much polish and content are hard to come by these days and this one definitely satisfies. As per usual to the Smash Bros. series, this game appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers and does a great fan service to its players.

If I had to pick a flaw (and it's hard to find one), I would only complain about the lack of a deep single player experience like what was in Brawl. I understand their reasoning for not including one and of course, the multiplayer is by far the most important part of the game.

Smash Bros. is well-worth buying a Wii U console for if you've been waiting. There are several solid titles out but this one takes the cake. Very fine work from Nintendo and many hours of enjoyment to be had with this gem.

Between the increased amount of stages/characters, new modes, custom move sets, functional online, and 8-player smash...there is no shortage of exciting new content to enjoy for smash fans looking for something new. For those who have never played a smash before, jump right in and enjoy the ride!

To me it's a party game with a learning curve that can keep you amused and bettering yourself for hours upon hours. I imagine I'll attend some competitive events as a spectator if the Smash eSports scene takes off again with this iteration, but overall my interest is essentially casual while writing this review.

That said, this is a fantastic new addition to the series. We had a "Smash Bash" party the day after release and had an absolute blast. Smash 4 is still a phenomenal party game and with the 8 player Smash you can involve just about everyone who's interested in playing simultaneously at modest gatherings.

Almost everything about this game is stellar, so let me just list my minor gripes:
    - Smash Tour is somewhat dull
    - There is no Smash Run like 3DS Smash on the Wii-U, only the aforementioned Tour
    - Acquiring duplicate moves, trophies and customization items can be frustrating
    - Sometimes the controllers get glitchy when you're using GameCube and/or Pro Controllers
    - My friends are better than me

So Smash Tour is a board game adaptation of Smash Run. It's much less engaging in my opinion. In fact, it honestly just about puts me to sleep. Going between monotonous board movement and playing matches with characters you don't choose just isn't all that enjoyable to me. I really wish they would have just kept Smash Run on the Wii-U just like 3DS instead of this mode.

As for the controller issue I mentioned, we had particular trouble with the GameCube controller adapter, but it was easily rectified by unplugging the GameCube controller and plugging it back in. Sometimes our Pro controllers would send inputs without us touching them as well, forcing us to reboot the entire system to resolve. Overall though, we may have spent a total of 15-20 minutes fighting buggy controllers during a 10 hour Smash session, much of which had 7-8 players going... so it's really not that bad.

Those negative points aside, this game is nearly perfect.

The interface is fluid and beautiful. The game's graphics are simply astounding. I think I've only noticed one shadow in the Orbital Assault stage that I didn't like. There was a bit of feathered dithering going on that catches my eye. Otherwise the texturing, shading and lighting of the game looks so great it's unbelievable. It's about the most "realistic" cartoony graphics experience I've ever seen.

Gameplay is very smooth. In the 30+ hours I've put in so far I think I've noticed two instances of framerate drops... and it could have even been my imagination. I can't believe how smoothly things run in 8-man Smash. I was entirely anticipating a bit of a stuttery situation when things got heavy, but saw nothing of the sort.

I love what they've done with the game's mechanics too. Movesets feel mostly balanced and there have been improvements that I feel add to the competitive potential of the game. The Equipment customization is a neat system that adds to my enjoyment. When I don't feel like improving my game, I can still lazily farm better equipment, which has its own form of amusement and a feeling of progression.

There's so much content in this release and [almost] all of it has immense value to provide. Even the Angry Birds ripoff iteration of Target Smash can be fun and challenging. Events are great, the Co-Op/Competitive opportunities are prolific, and every mode aside from Smash Tour is super fun and well polished.

I have to give this title a 10. Even though I had negative points to express, there's just no way it's deserving of a score so low as 9. If I didn't already have a Wii-U for Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors, this game would have easily pushed me to pick one up. Super Smash Bros 4 is a fantastic title supplementing a legendary series.

This is how you take a successful formula, improve it and fill it with tons of content. Plus it has that special Nintendo polish other developers fail to deliver with their bug-ridden game releases. Should be in consideration for game of the year together with Bayonetta 2. The presentation and graphics are actually stunning apart from a few old stages that didn't really get an HD treatment in my opinion (Bridge of Eldin, I'm looking at you). The character roster is also very big this time around and surprisingly balanced (Greninja is a bit cheap, especially online).

Speaking of online in terms of game modes I think it's near perfect but in terms of performance I did experience some lag but let me tell you it's a LOT better than Brawl was in this aspect.

Last complaint is that I really wanted another Subspace Emissary type of story just like in Brawl. That instead of Smash Tour would have been so much better.

I'm giving it a 10/10 just because I can't go in between so I guess I'm saying I recommend this to anyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best Smash games. Customs add variety of the characters, especially when playing with all the same characters. 8-player Smash is the best feature. You'll like some of the stages before you even have the chance of playing the original games, or just choose the theme that is right for stage and the battle.
The challenges in the game is harder than the ones on the 3DS game, like beating Classic 9.0 without losing a life, you use a Custom. There is the challenge without the Custom, but you are allowed to lose at least one stock.
Smash Tour can only be won by luck, same thing for the challenges of letting a Metroid to steal your stats and trying to get them back.
New characters such as Palutena, and Little Mac are fair enough. I was expecting some characters to have new moves. Dr. Mario uses the same moves that he uses in Melee, which itself is the same Mario's in the past game. Now Mario uses FLUDD, his Cyclone is a Down A. Dr. Mario uses a Doctor Cyclone, and his Jump Punch only hits once, which is fine because that makes him different than other "clones." Lucas is cut from Smash. But, the PK moves that he took from Kumatora is now added Ness' Customs. It would be nice if these protagonists can attack with their own moves or have more MOTHER characters.
There's a lot of stage music that are so great that you can't decide which is best for Smash.
Overall, this game is a no disappoint. You better get this game if want to settle it in Smash.
