With the fun and intense multiplayer, a passive single player, and the entertaining world of Inkopolis, Splatoon delivers an entertaining package worth your time and energy. Where Splatoon falls short, it makes up for it in multiplayer. This game is fun and entertaining. If you own a Wii U, you need to own Splatoon.

Splatoon might be the most underrated franchise of this generation. Nintendo brings their trademark flair and charm to the shooting genre and injects it with fun and personality in a way that only they can. The game launched a little bare-bones but was well supported with updates, additions, and events through time. Splatoon is a powerful addition to Nintendo's pantheon of franchises.

Splatoon is an all-time classic game. It has great music, great controls, and fun gameplay! You can even scroll your camera to get the right angle! This game has everything right. However, if you need a certain weapon during a battle, you can't switch between items. But hey, this was my first game I ever owned. So generally, it's a great game

However, what's kind of stopping me from giving this a 10 is the local multiplayer mode, where you verse each other and pop balloons. Yeah, doesn't really sound too interesting, but Splatoon was still incredible! The great times I had with this game just really make me want to get Splatoon 2 because I can no longer play Splatoon because my Wii U is no longer with me, and I have a Switch now. I always liked its concept and the game turned out really fun! It looks good, there's not a lot of game modes but it's enough to keep it fresh, and the story mode is actually pretty good. Also, there's a really big collection of different weapons that offer everyone a different way to play and that's a huge plus.

Splatoon isn't perfect but it comes pretty close, which is an amazing feat as it's a first game in an all new IP from Nintendo. Here are my quibbles that drop it down in score:

    Minor:
    - Inability to change equipment while sitting in the matchmaking screen.
    - Inability to back out of the matchmaking screen without shutting off the Wii U.
    - Motion/Gyro controls are horrid and way too twitchy even on the lowest sensitivity, The game shines with twin stick controls, however.
    - Initial repetition of the maps. Yes we're getting more soon, free, on a regular basis but after one afternoon I've seen 4 maps until I'm (almost) sick of them. I can't imagine how some people reached level 20 in the first 24 hours without getting burned out.
    - If someone gets disconnected or just doesn't play, you WILL lose. 3 on 4 is unforgiving, and heaven help you if you lose more than 1 person.

    Major (Update):
Although I originally rated the game a 9, I've dropped it down to an 8 due to one issue:
    - Longevity: Although the weapons are (more or less) fairly balanced and the maps probably some of the best arena maps I've played since the heyday of the arena games in the early 2000's, I've hit a wall with Splatoon simply because I've (almost) run out of things to do. At time of typing, I've reached max level in multiplayer, I have maxed out 3-star gear in all gear slots, have 100% completion of the single player (all upgrades, all 32 sunken scrolls [27 stage, 5 boss]), and I have a very small handful of amiibo challenges to finish. Bear in mind that I DID NOT play marathon sessions to achieve this. I generally got to play for an hour or two a night since release and even had a few days where I didn't play at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm still picking up the controller and playing, but for how long remains to be seen.

    Personal gripe:
    - amiibos. I had no problem with amiibo's prior to Splatoon but the way these amiibo (disclaimer: yes, I own them), unlock content rubs me the wrong way. Yes, the content they unlock is just remixed versions of the existing single player campaign, and yes the end rewards are cosmetic only. However, there is an AWFUL LOT of replay value that they gated behind the amiibo! Essentially the single player campaign could easily be doubled in length IF you have all of the amiibo, which isn't a given as the Squid is packaged in bundles in both North America (3 pack only) and Europe (bundled with game only). There's no guarantee the Splatoon amiibo will ever work in future games, either, one of the few redeeming qualities of the amiibo platform.

These issues aren't gamebreaking and, if you own a Wii U, you're doing yourself a great disservice if you don't at least try Splatoon. It's a game that has something for everyone while remaining family friendly.

    A final comment:
People complaining about voice chat, just stop. 3 minute matches on condensed maps do not lend well to deep strategy. The time you'd spend trying to formulate a plan would just put you further behind the other team. Plus, everything you need for on-the-fly strategy is right there on your gamepad. Voice chat would only open up the game to the most toxic elements of the community and make the game far less family friendly than it is.

More maps, modes and gear will be available in the future without a season pass. Voice chat is sadly unavailable but to tell the truth there hasn't been one instance where I found it completely necessary. The rounds are delivered in these small sweet doses that doesn't drag on.
Having to exit the lobby to just change your load out is very inefficient and needs to be adjusted as well as having classes.

    Bad

Splatoon delivers on the fun but the lack of content holds it back. Nintendo has already started releasing content at no charge just 3 days after release which is a positive sign. Let's hope Nintendo will address issues that have to do with voice chat and even the weapon selection between rounds a reality.

Secondly, it's really fun to play. Every game mode is a blast, and will leave you wanting more for hours.
Lastly, the weapon and gear customization is surprisingly in-depth. There's a decent amount of weapons and clothes that give you certain abilities as you level up, and you can really make a load-out your own.

But there is a MAJOR problem with the game currently, and that is how bare-bones it is in its current state.
So here's the rundown of the content in Splatoon. 3 minute online turf wars, singleplayer campaign, local 1v1 balloon battles, amiibo challenges, and only FIVE maps. You can't do 1v1 online against a friend, ranked battle is not out yet, no other game modes such as capture the flag or something like that, and there's only about one-third of the amount of maps acceptable for a $60 game. Now, keep in mind that there's going to be free content updates in the future. But for now it's a little bit short of content.

I'm enjoying Splatoon so much and have already played for 5+ hours in under a day, but my advice to you is to wait about 3 weeks- 2 months to buy it.

Splatoon may look childish with it's colours and non violent game-play but you will be surprised how complex it feels. Almost everything in Splatoon rotates on a 4 hour clock, New Maps, New Cloths etc all are available every 4 hours. This helps to keep the game fresh and new. The world Splatoon takes place in is amazing, It has little details everywhere you notice and makes you feel like your playing in a real world not just a city made to disguise lobby/loading screens. First technically the game looks good on Wii U, the colourful graphics and cute design (something Nintendo is a master in doing) please the eyes and there's no bug offline or online. The Wii U pad is pretty useless (you can aim with the motion control but you'll get your ass kicked by those playing with simple joysticks), the only other thing that uses the gamepad is your map on the screen.

Concerning the gameplay it's really fun, you'll have to use your gun (there's not a lot of them but there is a lot of difference between them) to cover the walls in painting (and of course kill your enemies), simple but extremely fun. Your movements are enhanced when you go into a "squid form" when you're walking on painting of your color, your skills in the squid form is where you'll make the difference and that's also what makes Splatoon different from other TPS.

Concerning the story, there's a campaign of approximately 8 hours in the game with a classic basic story from Nintendo (they are bad, go save us) the campaign is a great way to be prepared to join the multiplayer and it offers some nice boss fights and platforming, not the main argument of the game but a worthy addition. For the global length of the game that depends of how much you'll get hooked to the multiplayer, but to reach the max level you'll need at least 20 hours so it's okay.

In conclusion Splatoon is a very fun TPS with a gameplay easy to play, but hard to master. There could be more online content (maps and weapons) and there's room to improve the solo experience but globally no major flaws, except of course the limits of the hardware, with a gamepad that even Nintendo don't know to use. Advisable to every Wii U owner looking for a nice competitive multiplayer experience.

I've never been a big fan of shooters, and generally I'll only play them if I enjoy the storyline and characters. Splatoon truly is unlike any other shooter I've played though. People accurately describe the online multiplayer as the Mario Kart of shooters, but I would equate the single player mode more to Mario Galaxy, for some fairly obvious reasons.

The single-player mode felt overlooked at first, as the game starts you off by urging you to go to the multiplayer lobby and merely mentioning a "weird old dude" off in a corner of the hub map. Once you go there, though, a funny and irreverent story begins, and you're suddenly out to save Inkopolis. Along the way, you can pick up orbs that go toward upgrading your weapon suite and collect scrolls that both provide you with some history regarding the game world and blueprints for weapons you can later purchase for online play. The story also culminates in a surprisingly tough final boss fight that is extremely fun and satisfying, albeit a bit repetitive.

The story mode is not perfect, though. The levels are wildly creative and a blast to, well, blast through, but the story is over after only a few hours. Luckily, you can add new challenge modes with Splatoon Amiibo support, but this is something I've yet to try, and needing to purchase a separate set of figurines to unlock (admittedly very worthwhile, or so I hear) content could be a turn-off for many. Another sticking point with single-player is that you're forced to use the same gear and weapons all throughout, so all those different guns and pieces of gear you can purchase and use online are forever barred from single-player, which makes it feel limiting. What single-player does have over multiplayer though is creativity. Actually, a lot of common things you'll see in single-player will never show up in multiplayer at all. Lastly, although the story is fun and goofy, there's absolutely no weight to it at all. It feels like you're just going through some practice grounds and honing your skills while the occasional boss comes along to get in your way. Your goal is to save Inkopolis, but you never really feel like you're actually doing that.

On to multiplayer, where the vast majority of play time will be spent. I'm one of those people who looks at lack of voice chat as a blessing. We've learned with voice chat can be like from the likes of other popular shooters like Halo and CoD, and I'm of the opinion that it's not a bad idea to avoid that here. Online can be hit or miss I think. For one, you can't even start purchasing new gear until you hit level 4, which involves participating in a number of online matches. Level 4 comes quickly at least, and it's offset by the fact that you need to do online battles to gather money to purchase new gear in the first place. The real sticking point is the lack of variety in maps and modes, especially early on. Until you hit level 10, which can take a while, you can only participate in Turf Wars. Turf Wars are fun, quick matches where two teams of four battle to cover the highest percentage of the ground in their team's color of ink. Inking walls does not count toward the percentage, but can be a good help for reaching unclaimed or enemy territory. This, and the other online mode, is a lot of fun because it flips the script on what's deemed important in the shooter: not gunning down your enemies at every opportunity, but rather claiming more control of the land than your enemies. It's a refreshing mechanic that can easily appeal to players who aren't too fond of typical shooters, like myself. "Splatting" other players can still give you a nice benefit or two though, like getting them out of the area for a few seconds, and when you splat someone, an explosion of your team's ink bursts forth from them, potentially helping you cover extra land. When it comes to the results screen though, amounts of splatting, whether you were splatted or doing the splatting, is relegated to a minor sidebar that has no bearing on how well you did in the match.

The other mode, a "king-of-the-hill" style game, is basically the same as a Turf War, except the war is over one or two particular areas of a map. This mode can only be achieved after hitting level 10, which unlocks Ranked Battles where this mode appears.

On the negative side, there are a scant amount of multiplayer maps. I haven't counted, but I think there are only 8, and the maps rotate every few hours for some reason, so you're stuck with 2 for Turf Wars and 2 for ranked battles until the game switches them again. This lack of variety makes playing online a bit of a drag after a while, especially if you're stuck with maps you're not too fond of.

All that said, Splatoon is a very fun and creative game. It feels rather lacking so far unfortunately, but never have I had so much fun and felt more joy playing a shooter before picking up Splatoon.

Like, really good. I read some reviews claiming it’s very barebones for the high price and I can somehow see it, but now, when I write this review, this game got enough updates to put some meat on the bones and so it is clearly not an empty, hollow skeleton it was at the release, so… Right now, if you think about buying this, I rise a thumb up and recommend because SPLATOON is FUN.

The whole idea of making their very own online shooter that will be non-violent (as much as the genre allows!) was a daunting task to put it softly, and yet, they managed… The game is whimsical, colourful, funny and most importantly, ridiculously exhilarating, right now it is my #1 game for stress relief! Why? Let’s take a brief look…

    --- Look and Feel ---

The game looks like a candy! It’s absolutely beautiful in every possible way… Yes, it is not next-gen graphics, it does not strive for realism, it does not provide astonishing light effects and some mind-boggling details to focus on. It doesn’t have to, because it knows what it want to be. And it want to be a bright, enjoyable world full, bah, rich in colour and this light mood that makes you firmly believe that even if you do shoot others into explosive oblivion of ink, it’s more a game, a fun play than actual fighting and fierce competition. Characters are just charmingly cute, the details and rich choice of their customization through outfits adds a big and delicious touch of personality to each Squiddo…

Arenas are quite different from each other, well designed and most importantly, beautiful to look at! Even more attention to detail was put into… The ink! The whole painting the land process looks real, feels real and matched with great music and sounds effects give you this delightful “get dirty and wet with the paint” feeling. Animations are also on point, smooth, nice… Enjoyable.

This is a beautifully looking game in the very Nintendoish way. Bright, happy, colourful.

    --- Cogs and Gears ---

So, the game is still pretty bare, but bear with me (no pun intended… perhaps!). As for online multiplayer shooter it still lacks some essential tools, like the long awaited teamspeak which will never come due to two issues – first, there are no regional separation, and so you can have a mixture of all languages in a single team. Hoping all of them will talk English is selfish and vain. Secondly, and I understand Nintendo here, is the vile hatred and pure acid it would bring… Show me ONE online game in which players are polite, not-swearing wads. Nintendo want none of that in their colourful game on the consoles for families, right?

Putting that aside, the game still do not have rich selection of Arenas (it’s hardy Q3A…), the special abilities on the gear offers miniscule bonuses and the gear is made in such a way that any chance to make builds is horribly squandered and the weaponry, when quite balances, does not really offer anything extremely unique in feel. Which is fine, because thanks to that the games are more balanced. It might piss off hardcore players who expect game solely based on skill, but Splatoon never aimed to be “Nintendo variant of Quake”, but a light, quick shooter to have some fun. And they surely did that well.

    --- Fun Factor ---

Oh gosh… Plenty of that here! This game is insanely fun and basically thanks to this elusive and hard to define factor I am giving it such a high grade. On the first look it might feel a little wonky, a little empty in content, easy to burn through… And, on some level, this is true. However it is very important to notice, that even when you are piledriving through the game, it always remain extremely fun. Each fast paced match is thrilling and awesome. You very rarely feel that there are some defeats that you cannot win through if you pull your act together (and usually it happens only if one of your team member is AFK or disconnect). Even the repetitive maps have surprisingly high refresh rate, as you rarely focus on the arena alone, and more on the fast paced play going on, trying to cover it all in ink and splat some fools that come to your sight… Even extremely simple and straightforward single player campaign is so fast-paced and breakneck you do not really find yourself thinking “well, this is dumb” but rather “woo-hee, here we go!”.
All in All, Splatfest is growing nicely. New maps, new modes, new weaponry is coming as we speak, the game expands… And I still continue to love it and I feel better if during a day I burn 30-40 minutes splashing ink around.

The soundtrack on this game is amazing too, it's so different.

The graphics and psycics are sweet on this game, you can almost feel and smell the ink.

There is also a addictive mini-game while waiting for a battle start on multiplayer mode, i will give a big plus for that too.

My main gripe with this game would be that I wish the maps in multiplayer randomized after each match. Playing the same two maps repeatedly for a couple of hours gets unpleasantly repetitive real quick.

Other than that, this game is pretty much ink-credible. Overused pun to describe this game, I know. But it's true.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

1: The game has no voice chat
Because we all know how nice it is to be cursed out by squeaky 12-year-old boys (implied sarcasm). Nintendo wants to keep player-to-player interaction to a minimum for obvious child safety and profanity reasons. Putting open voice chat on Splatoon would ruin Nintendo's reputation. However, I do not understand why they don't allow it for friends who are playing together like in Smash. Maybe they will patch it in sometime in the future.

    2: No party system
You can join your friends if they are playing a game, but your teams are assigned randomly to avoid good players herding together and destroying all randomly selected opposition. I think this is a great design choice. In the coming expansion players will be able to go versus against pre-assembled teams, outside of the random lobby.

3: You can't switch your loadout during a match
In fact you can't do anything during a match, not even adjust your camera sensitivity. Why? Because you are playing a match and you should focus on playing and learning your weapon load-out. I think it's an excellent way to keep players in the game somewhat forcefully and make them learn how to play their weapon. If you allow people to change their load-out during games, it will be a constant schizophrenic mess of people testing weapons and then throwing them in the corner as soon as they get splatted.

4: The single player is short
Well of course it is, as this is a completely multiplayer centric game. Considering some weapons require you to beat the single-player campaign I'm actually glad that it's short.

Thinking back on how relatively incomplete this game launched and its pricing, I'm also suspecting a completely rushed launch. The number of maps was lacking and the game has constant connection issues. The lag is atrocious at times. This ends up with the server often deciding that two people splatted each other at the same time, or that you get splatted by a sniper without even seeing the aim pointer.

What it boils down to are the fun mechanics. You paint the floor, and the enemy can't walk in it. This makes the front lines of the battle and any enemy movement clearly visible. The respawn times are short and you can "jump" to your allies by simply touching the game pad. There is simply no end to the pvp if you don't want it to. Speaking of the game pad, as a mouse guy I love the precision that motion controls offer me.

There are as many play styles as there are weapons in this game. Trying to learn them and optimize them with the right clothing boosts is a lot of fun to me. The clothing is equipped with a main skill boost and up to 3 sub skill boosts. The same clothing will always have the same main boost, but the sub boosts are assigned randomly. Three sub-skill boosts combined make up for one main skill boost.
You can re-roll these random slots, so creating a set of clothing for a particular weapon and play style is highly beneficial in my opinion.

You can sink a lot of time into this game. I keep finding myself coming back to it and the total playtime is up there with smash. The game is certainly lacking in local multiplayer options, but I suspect they will do more for this in the future. The core game is very solid, completely unique and fun. Leave the devs to simmer a little longer if your shops are asking $60, but at $40 and below it is absolutely worth it.

Why did I start with the words "right now"? Because if you bought the game during its first month, the game was like Overwatch right now, just a few stages, about 20 different weapons, around 5 maps and a crippled experience (I'm crippled, so I know about it).

The game will surely give you about 30 hours of fun and if you really enjoy them, you'll easily keep playing past the 100 hour mark.
It has a single player mode, it helps you to understand the mechanics of the game and has easter eggs, you'll beat it in less than 5 hours and forget about it, but it is recommendable to finish it, as you'll get a few weapons that cannot be obtained otherwise.

Why? Because there would be much negativity. If voice chat existed in Splatoon, then players like me that aren't that good, would get yelled by their teemates and things would get worst. But, i think that they should have allowed voice chat between friends. Besides that there are some other issues. For example there is no way you can quit lobby which sucks a little bit, due to the reason that if you wait for a ranked battle and you have to leave, the only way you can do it is by closing completely the system and losing about 10 points. Last but not least, the weakest spot in Splatoon is matchmaking. I am level 29 and rank A-. When i want to play ranked it puts me with players that are 45-50 level which is really frustrating since they have more experience in the game than i do. The concept is very unique and well-done, and even with how simple and bare bones the gameplay is, it still manages to be one of the most fun games Nintendo has released in a long time.

altogether this game is a masterpiece, it's fantastic so I'm giving it a 8 out of 10!

Splatoon may be overshadowed by other titles such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., however, it is a gem and it is certainly one of the best titles for the Wii U so far.

The basis around the game is that you are a squid-human hybrid, called an inkling, competing in your favourite sport which is ink battling and defending your people from the invading octolings who are an octopus-human hybrid and their leader D.J Octavio. Octolings and inklings have been at war for many years.

Online there is 2 modes which are ranked battles and regular battles which are ranked battles and regular battles. In a regular battle, you and your team (3 other players), compete against the opposing team, who also have 4 players, to cover as much ground as possible in your ink. The team with the most ground covered wins.

In a ranked battle, only accessible at level 10, you will either have to transport the rainmaker, cover the splatzones or ride the tower. When transporting the rainmaker, your team have to carry the rainmaker to the opponent's goal and, if no team reaches either goal, the team who got closest wins. When covering splatzones, your team have to cover the splatzones, an specific area on the map, in your own ink for 100 seconds and if no team holds them for 100 seconds then the team to held the splatzones for the longest time wins. When riding the tower, your team have to cover the tower in your own ink and ride it to the opponent's goal and if no team reaches the goal then the team who got closest wins. When you win a match, you are awarded with experience points and in-game cash. There is also an offline single player mode where you fight of the octolings.

There are also other buildings in the hub world where you buy clothing and weapons.

The graphics on Splatoon, much like other Wii U titles, are phenomenal and this can be seen when swimming through ink. The battle system in the game is also very fun and addictive. You may also customise your inkling by selecting it's gender, eye colour, skin tone and clothing, as previously mentioned. However, you may not choose your inkling's hair colour as it is determined by the colour of your ink and this means that every inkling is different.

The control scheme is also very easy to use and understand. L stick to move, R stick to alter the camera angle, X to jump, ZR to turn into a squid, ZL to use the weapon, up/down buttons to say 'Nice!' or 'To me!' and the touchscreen to jump to other players.

The online connection is also very good and it rarely losses connection.

There are also some minor issues as well. One issue is the single player mode. The single player mode is very enjoyable but it is quite short only lasting for a couple of hours in total. Another small problem is the lack of voice chat in-game and the closest to voice chat is the use of the up/down buttons as previously mentioned. The last problem is the inability to swap weapons while waiting for other players in the lobby. To change weapons, you have to leave the lobby and re-enter another lobby which can be a hassle.

Despite the problems, Splatoon is an excellent game that I would advise any Wii U owner to buy.

It also comes with a main campaign that is mostly a tutorial for many mechanics, although some of them seem missing from the online play which is the game's main core, the campaign is short but well crafted, it can be a little repetitive by the end but that's it, is more in the vein of good Mario Galaxy levels, merge it with killer music and you'll have a good time.

As I mentioned at first, sadly there are some drawbacks, as much addictive the online matches can get, at some time they become a little repetitive because of the maps, the mechanic goes as follows: every day you can fight randomly on 4 available maps, 2 for regular battles and other 2 for ranked battles (which you can get when you hit level 10), in regular battles you have to ink (paint) most of the map before the time goes out and as you fight the other team, on ranked battles the mechanic is more or less like capture the flag, but instead you have to take the flag to the enemy base, it needs more strategy but it is also really fun. The thing is that there are a limited amount of maps and playing them on extended sets of time becomes a little tiresome, I'm also not a big fan of the equipment system, every set of gear has 1 to 4 slots with random abilities that you'll unlock after getting experience points, the random part it feels more like a time trap to maintain you attached to the game, it seems unfair because that is more like a mechanic in a free to play game, and also the game is so much fun that it doesn't need those gimmicks to maintain you entertained so I hope in the next game, they fix this system. Another issue is the character customization, you can only change your character's tone skin and eye color, but no extra haircuts or anything, so your character will look pretty much the same if you don't spice things up with your clothing.

Aside from the things that I didn't like, playing Splatoon took me back to my childhood where basic things can be really fun with friends, speaking of friends, I couldn't play with anyone because none of my friends have a Wii U, also, the Splatfests which apparently were a big thing at the game's launch now were pretty dead, so I don't know how much they add to your experience. In some years the servers will go down, and the only thing that will be playable will be the main campaign, if you're someone from the future and you're in fact looking to play this game for its single-player mode I say go ahead if you find this game on the cheap, otherwise maybe you can stick with whatever numbered Splatoon is currently available.

I also like how charming the characters are due to them all being sea food and their quirky dialoge. It's also good for fans who aren't really fans of shooting games because the campaign has platforming to it as well as shooting, it has cool clothing items and refrances to other games too like NES zapper and the blooper from super mario bros. The trailer for this game was one of the trailers that really made Nintendo win E3 that year as well as raised the standards for nintendo E3's. However there are some flaws with it. For one thing, it has no voice chat. That sort of changed in splatoon 2. I also think that the game lacks content.. especially when splatoon 2 has way more content. Splatoon may of had the mini game you play before a match as well as wii u controls but splatoon 2 works almost as well with the gyro aiming. Splatoon also has a rhythm mini game which is just as good as the jumping one. Lastly the story mode in splatoon 2 is better, it has great DLC, the local multiplayer is better.. balloon battle? Really? and it has salmon mode. To conclude, splatoon was great for it's time but splatoon 2 raised the bar and for the next splatoon game even after 2, I hope that the game launches complete. Expand

The stage intro is still a button mash to get over with but Inkopolis Plaza is just how I remember it. It certainly took a hit with Miiverse being shutdown, sadly. There is a lot less life in from other players. My muscle memory possesed me into doing parkour on the various object I could jump on to the background noises of the train, chatter, and bumping Inkopolis Tower music. 2 player battle dojo has had like 3 uses ever in my entire time owning the game, but there are some other places to explore.

I bought all of the in-game gear so I can't enjoy the stores as much, and the only reason I'll see Spyke is to reroll one piece of gear I have until I get 3 of anything in a row, but the gear I have is great. I love the summer-y clothes that match well with the sunny bright stages but the winter stuff is nice, too. I have a Ninja Squid Jacket with 3 Swim Speed Ups and a Stealth Jump boots with three Quick Super Jumps. The Dual Squelcher is my bias wrecker while the .52 Gal Deco is still my bias. All of this stuff looks great on the Wii U, and the Gamepad actually had a more-than-secondary role in the game.

Finding a lobby is as fine as it was before, but since the playerbase has decreased, I've been able to notice the same players after leaving a lobby and joining a new one, so that's interesting. Hackers are either cool or salty: no in-between. To this day, I still look at the other players' levels, if they have clan tags or symbols in their names, and whether or not they are Jap/Korean, just so I can hope to have the highest level foreigners are on my team. The minigame before a match is a nice distraction as well. I still Booyah when a see a teammate get a kill as well as at the beginning of matches, just for moral boost.

I maxxed out my level before the big update and directly after they added the new system so I can't really comment on progression, just that I wish you got a point on your exp bar for every hundred points of inked turf rather than getting three or five everytime. Scaling would be much more rewarding.

Turf War is still enjoyable since the weapons are balanced enough that there is no "OP" weapon that EVERYONE uses (but nobody uses the regular Blasters or regular rapid Blasters; only the ranged variants of the original). Squid Parties can still be found! Also, I really like the music for the matches. 3 minutes is great in my opinion for squeezing in a fun match whenever I can. Disconnects seem to be the same as much as they were back in 2015 but I've noticed they happen more often on Ranked......

Splat Zones is still great and intense with no "OP" weapon, but I do feel powerful using the N-Zap with both a Sprinkler and Inkstrike in that mode. Rainmaker has a lot of Splash-o-matics and Bomb Rush specific kits but that's it for repetition; it's still fresh overall. I don't think I've played Tower Control again but I'm sure it's still Luna Blaster-centric with a side of Kraken kitted-Chargers. There really isn't much to say besides they can be as action packed as they can be rage inducing. The exp point system is also better here but keeping your rank is just NOT. A bad chain of matches can really set you back, and with Splatoon's infamous disconnects, I don't even know how we did it back then. But, if online is being funky, there's always singleplayer.

Single Player is still ICONIC. I'm surprised how much quality the single player has in this multiplayer based game, but that's Nintendo for you. Oh my days, the music is amazing. I love the world designs and how whacky everything is. I also love playing the first stages in evening and night mode, as well as keeping a preserved version of the original Urchin Underpass in one of those Inkstrike stages. This is where that 90's Nick vibe really hits.

Overall, I'd give Splatoon 1 in 2020 (or later) a solid 8/10, a great game for anybody but Octolings and Callie stans. In 2015, though? Bare bones content, relying on updates for locked on-disc content. The game would've been at least a 6/10 back then, since the gameplay was still fresh and fluid back then. It's hard for me to want to play Splatoon 2 for a yearly fee on top of the $60 entry fee when Splatoon 1 has free online to this day, past the initial $60. Industry standards have been lowering and the mainstream consumers don't know what they're consuming and why it's harmful to their wallets and the market. As consumers, the best way to combat this is to not give in, or to vote with our wallet. However, Splatoon 1 was made with being 'in on the reveals' for on-disc content from the beginning. The trend of "Games as a service" rather than "Games as a product" left Splatoon 1 in an interesting spot, where it was lacking in both (at least for $60).

Their new IP shows of impressive graphics, mostly tight controls (the jump button feels poorly placed and optional gyroscope aiming is a touch awkward and gimmicky), and addictive matches. With a interesting twist on how you compete Nintendo has brought gamers a shooter that is both unique and fun even if some issues get in the way.

With the focus of the game being on multiplayer the campaign isn't all that exciting. It basically just serves as a way to show off the game's shooting mechanics. It's solid all around, but outside of the boss battles there isn't that much exciting going on. It's brief, easy, and it doesn't take long until you notice the repetition starting to set in. Not even the enemy Octolings which have the same powers you do are all that interesting to fight. They are just as easily blown away. The huge boss battles are quite fun even if they are just a brief and easy as the rest of the game. The exception to this is the final boss which suffers due to dragging on for too long. Toppling these giant bosses is a treat and I wanted more from the game in that department.

Overall the campaign in decent, but not terribly remarkable in any way. Probably the most disappointing part though is that it, along with the game as a whole, lacks any sort of personality. There are characters and a very thin story, but both just come off as intrusive and uninteresting. "Inkopolis News" is the worst offender and is just plain annoying. With no way to turn it off or skip it I'm left mashing the A in order to skip all the dialog and get through it as quickly as I can. While the stylistic vibe of the game doesn't give it much of a personality (which is a big disappointment for a Nintendo game) it does add some unique features to the gameplay. Specifically the multiplayer portion.

Like I said before the focus is on the multiplayer and that is where the game delivers. The game's brief matches will have you jumping back in again and again. The goal of matches is not to shoot the other people, but to shoot the ground. Whichever team covers the map with more ink wins. Obviously you are able to shoot other players and "splat" them, but this new twist on how you approach matches gives the game a unique feel that makes it more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. Matches reward you with coins and experience, both a which are used to get your hands on new gear.

The game puts a lot of emphasis on fashion. However buying new clothes for you character is more than just a way to look different than other players. Each item of clothing comes with special perks like increased ink storage or faster movement which will help you create a play-style that suits you. The same goes for weapons. Choose the giant paint roller and you've got a character more suited to covering as much of the map as possible as opposed to combat. Choose the "Shickling" sniper riffle and you'll be more effective as a player who takes out enemies from afar while other players focus on inking the map.

All of this versatility along with regular "Splatfest" events make for a very fun multiplayer experience that can and most likely will keep you coming back. Especially with the promise of more content coming in the way of free DLC. A few odd little missteps here and there like the lack of voice chat are noticeable, but don't ruin the experience. The map being included on the gamepad sounds lie it would be more useful at first, but then you realize that all it will do is pull you out of the action by taking you eyes off of the screen. Games like COD and Halo have done the exact same thing the gamepad does here, only onscreen right in the corner. I never used this gamepad feature once outside of spawning on my teammates location after being splatted. The lack of VC isn't a huge issue, but it would have made this team-based shooter a little more satisfying had they given gamers the tools to communicate and come up with effective strategies. Overall though it's not really a noticeable non-inclusion.

While a few minor missteps, a disappointing campaign, and missing personality do bring the game down they don't change the fact that "Splatoon" is an all around good game. It's a fun twist on the multiplayer shooter genre and has the potential to be incredibly addicting. While I wouldn't say it's worth buying a Wii U for this is definitely a game very Wii U owner should have in their library.

    I give Splatoon a 7.9/10.

I am not too sure how to sum up my thoughts and feelings on Splatoon as they seem to change slightly with each play session I have with the game. Lets start with the good aspects:

*The controls are absolutley spot on. Tight coontrols are very important for this kind of game, and both the motion controls and the traditional analogue stick methods work very well, with no lag. If you can get used to the motion control scheme (it took me about an hour of play for it to click) it is the superior option. The level of precision that can come form slight tilts of the gamepad is better than even mouse control for shooting.

*The animation is flawless, all running at a slick 60fps.

*The cental game idea of claiming territory through paint is imaginative and fun, and makes the game (which is essentially a third person shooter) feel so fresh and new.

*The game pad integration is really good. With the lack of voice chat (see below) being able to see what your team is doing on the gamepad and then instantly jump to their location is a great touch for adding more strategy to proceedings.

    Now the bad:

*Lack of modes. At launch there was only a single online mode. Another mode was unlocked a few days after release, and yet more are promised in the coming months, but I can't rate the game on what could be released later. The single online mode at launch is good fun, but with a 3 minute timer it is far too short. Often you feel like you are just starting to get a grip on the current battle when it ends abruptly. The single player is surprisingly good for what is essentially an online game...but it is pretty short (should last about 5 hours).

*Lack of voice chat. I HATE voice chat in most online games as it generally just decends into teenage brats shouting obscenities at each other. But in a game like Splatoon which is about teamwork, not being able to communicate with your team is a major let down.

*Clunky interface. There are lots of small annoyances with the UI, such as having to listen to pointless chit chat from NPCs when all you really want to do is buy something, or even just jump into a match. There really should have been a skip button to avoid hearing all the pointless dialogue.

As I said, it is hard to sum everything up as every time I play I generally have a new feeling about the game (sometimes better, sometimes worse. Overall I think it is a fun game, but it doesn't quite feel like a first party Nintendo game...It feels more like a good indie game, or an e-shop title.

Alas, if you are a gamer who actually cares about improving and competing, it is also Splatoon's downfall. They have an almost meaningless "ranked" mode, which is essentially a cluttered, frustrating, uncoordinated version of king of the hill, with paint. The control area is small enough that one ink strike special will mitigate a team's possession, which seems weird to me. Because it's Nintendo, they were very careful to insure that nobody had too much of an advantage with skill alone. Rollers are a great equalizer for people who have no gaming experience or hands, and the gear bonuses appear to be totally randomized to ensure you don't get any smart ideas or feel inclined to play with an outfit that you actually like.

You cannot communicate with your teammates online, and players are often afk or disconnected on account of Nintendo's lackluster server configuration. In a 4v4, this is typically a death-sentence for the unlucky team. You play with a mix of people across the world, which sounds neat, but any seasoned gamer will realize what it actually means: a mix of pings on a mystery server that people on one half of the globe or the other will have the advantage in.

The game's other big flaw is that you can't seem to play with your friends locally unless you want to do the vastly inferior 1-on-1 balloon popping game. There is no local cooperative play, no split screen, and no ability to even play with your friends online, because while you can join their game, it's seemingly random which team you are on.

At the end of the day, it's a fun game. You'll play it, have fun with it, grow frustrated at its blue shell equivalents, and wish it was more than it is. But you'll play it and have fun with it.

I really enjoyed a lot of things about this game, but with all the good things it has to offer, there are those that frustrate me a good deal as well. First, the good things: I really dig this game's feel. The aesthetics and music are really varied, ranging from a hip-hop Jet Set Radio-esque feel, to a Japanese-inspired feel, to alt. rock; it's really amazing how cultured the game is, without it feeling too random and out-there. The characters are memorable and enjoyable; not one character made me cringe (maybe Shelldon with his constant weapon speak almost every time you visit him, but I can get past that). The single player is one of the greatest things about this game in my opinion; it mixes good platforming and shooter aspects while keeping some familiarity (like visiting a few multiplayer maps) and at the same time making the experience fresh and new. The bosses are really neat, but as everyone else may agree with, the main story mode antagonist, DJ Octavio, definitely takes the cake as probably one of Nintendo's greatest final bosses. My only gripe with story mode is it feels a little too short; if you know what you're doing as you're going through stage after stage and boss after boss, you can easily finish the single player in about an hour and a half to two hours. There's definitely more to be desired there. Now, onto the main attraction, and where most of my beef resides, the multiplayer. While the gameplay is fun and invigorating, you don't get a whole lot of choice when it comes to battling people online. Sure, there are plenty of modes, mostly in Ranked Battle, but they're always on a rotation, and the same goes for the stage select. I really wish they could've taken a page out of Mario Kart 8's book and let the players decide what mode and stage they wanted to go to, and then just leave it up to randomly selecting from that. Instead, you could be playing the same stage multiple times in a row, or the mode might get a little boring the more you keep playing it. It sounds a little contradictory for me to say that, having just said the gameplay's invigorating, but it'd really be nice to get to choose your mode so you're not always playing the same thing, again in terms of Ranked Battle. Turf War is one of the main modes, and that's always fun...until players higher in level than you start pummeling you, which leads me into another thing I want to bring to light: I really wish there was a level range chooser. Let me explain; there should be an option to choose to find players around the world that are in your approximate level range. Back before the big August update the level cap. was at 20, and a lot of the time I'd get stuck with nothing but Level 20s, which led to a lot of losses. I'm not complaining or whining here, and it's not that I suck, but it seems pretty unfair to me. I'd be a Level 12 and get stuck with seven Level 20s; scenarios like this would always happen. If we had a chooser for level range, you could be a Level 19 and play with others around that range instead of, for example, four Level 28s and like three Level 35s, all more experienced than you and those on the opposing side can easily wipe you out. It may be something of a nitpick, but I think this would improve the game tenfold. Another thing I want to bring up is how bland local multiplayer is; you can't play 4v4, just 1v1, and while you can choose your stage, costumes and weapons for your Inklings are mapped to those stages, so again there's not a lot of choice. Also the only mode you can play locally is a balloon-popping game, which is very disappointing. One last thing I want to talk about is just how dependent this game is on online connectivity; yes, it's needed for online multiplayer, duh, but upgrading yourself with costumes and weapons is dependent on that too, which is also disappointing. First off, you can't even get anything if you're playing the game for the first time 'til you're Level 4, and secondly, you need coins to buy things, but you can only win them online. These issues here are why I've rated this game a 7. If these get fixed in another big update, of course I'll give it something higher, but as it stands, "Splatoon" is an excellent, albeit flawed, game. I would still recommend you check it out, but keep these things in mind! Expand

It is a fun new IP by Nintendo, very creative and I had a lot of fun with it while it lasted, however there are many shortcomings to the game that just shortens its longevity. Firstly, the lack of content really limits this game. I have played this game for maybe a week now and I am beginning to grow tired of the existing modes and maps. It is a really fun game and it is very disappointing to see its potential limited by this.

Secondly, the ranking system in Ranked Battles is flawed. For a competitive mode such as Ranked Battles, the ranking system is based on how your team performs, not how you individually perform. This defeats the purpose of an individual ranking system and Nintendo cannot just turn a blind eye on this. I don't have any drive to raise my rank because I know that it can be affected any second by poor players in my team.

Lastly (this is a minor gripe), but I am a huge fan of the charger weapons and I feel like the charger weapon is too underpowered. Maybe if they removed the line of fire when you're charging, it will make the charger a little better?

I am giving this game 7/10 due to its creativity and its potential, but ultimately it still feels like Nintendo rushed this game out to compensate for LoZ Wii U not coming out this year.

I think the game is great I like how it was child friendly it isn't scary or violent. the single player mode was kinda easy except the final boss. I like how there's festivals (splat fest) but I still feel like there where still connection issues even after the delay... I don't think a 1vs.4 match is fair, but otherwise it's a good game.

I check my ammo, find that it’s adequate, and take a deep breath. Finally, I leave cover with all guns blazing. Then I get squashed by a paint roller. My killer gives a resounding cry of “Yeah!” and continues his rampage. Splatoon is a game unlike any other, to put it in layman’s terms. It’s the first original game from Nintendo in 14 years and its first shooter, and it certainly shows it in the amount of fun I’ve had with it both online and off. But is it worth a purchase, and is it worth picking up the failing Wii U console for?

Splatoon takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which the Earth is populated by half-human, half-squid/octopus hybrids, called Squidlings, and one where warfare is fought with ink. Its cities and people take after Japanese architecture and conventions, and the biggest craze amongst young Squidlings is a sport called “Turf War.” In it, two teams of four scramble to cover as much of the arena (but only the floors, mind you) in their team’s colour using all sorts of weird and wacky ink-based weapons. Either that or you can simply shoot the enemy themselves to make them explode in a satisfying splat. Don’t rely on this too much though, as enemy ink will slow you down and make you more vulnerable to damage. It doesn’t match your outfit, either. They change between a Kid form and a Squid form as well, which buries them inside the ink, making them go fast (I hear the red paint makes you go faster), or concealing them entirely if you stand still. Jumping out of ink in an ambush is incredibly fun, and makes you feel like some kind of jungle warrior. This crazy hobby is how you’ll be playing the online component for the time being, but this mechanic of colour-based combat carries over to the single-player modes as well.

The single-player campaign centers around your squidling, who has been recruited in secret, and rather hastily, into a one-squid army dedicated to stopping the nefarious plans of the Octolings. The Octolings resent the Squidlings for winning a war long ago, and want to take revenge. They do this by capturing Zapfish: Small, sad-looking things which power the Squidling’s civilisation. These Zapfish are recaptured at the end of each level, and you need all of them in a level zone before moving on to the next one. But the last Zapfish in each zone is guarded by a boss, and they’re some of the most well-designed bosses I’ve seen in a long time. Each of them is difficult enough to feel like a challenge, but not too hard to feel frustrating. The final boss in particular was a real toughie!

This lack of seriousness can be seen in the game’s visual style and soundtrack as well. It’s refreshing to see colour be used as a primary mechanic in a shooter, and the overall aesthetic of the game is bright and imaginative. The soundtrack is also sublime, and one I’ve already downloaded! It sounds like a mix between Musato Muzika’s Crash Bandicoot 2 soundtrack, 70s British punk rock, and human music. These components all add to the overall originality that the game has to offer, and proves that Nintendo’s still got it when it comes to ideas.

Splatoon is a game that the Wii U desperately needed. It is an original IP that breathes fresh air into a stale genre and a game that makes Amiibo purchases viable (if arguably mandatory). It’s certainly a fantastic online game, but it’s nothing worth buying a Wii U exclusively for. If you already have one you have no excuse not to pick this up, but this won’t make you leap off the fence in order to take the dip and buy one. The Wii U needs a few more games like this in order to do that, but it’s a step in the right direction. I just hope that the next game (and let’s face it, there’s gonna be another one) improves on the formula and doesn’t make the same mistakes this one did. But for now, it’s one of the Wii U’s strongest titles and one of the most fun games you’ll play this year.

First, let's get the bad out of the way. There is little to no offline play. Sure, there's a decent single-player campaign, but there's not a lot to it. Beat this level, collect this scroll, rinse and repeat. The Battle Dojo is a joke, don't even try it. It's a slapped on "Shoot more targets than your friend" that makes even Wii Play's "Shoot more targets than your friend" seem like a much better game. Also, the amiibo functionality is a bit shallow. It gives some Super Mario Galaxy comet-like twists to some of the campaign levels. However, the different challenges they present you with is either "Complete level with ___ weapon" or "Beat this in ___ minutes!". The gear is cool, it is not worth $13 for each figure.

The main problem with Splatoon, however, is just how much of an internet based game this is. What happened to local multiplayer? Sure, the online is a great feature of the game, but when Nintendo eventually takes down the Wii U servers this game is going to be worthless. Having local multiplayer turf war would make this game an endless supply of fun and I would probably give it a 10. It's that much of a factor. I know Nintendo is capable of making it happen, so what gives?

All of that aside, Splatoon is fantastic. The variety of weapons, maps, and gear are great. The game's main mode, turf war, is the most fun I've had with a shooter since Star Wars Battlefront 2. The integration of miiverse is well done. Anyone with a good internet connection looking for a fresh shooter experience should seriously consider this game. It has one of those dumb ranked systems that other online games have, which I'll never understand why they thought "If your team sucks, your rank goes down!" instead of "If you score a lot of points, then you get a better rank!" was a good idea. However, that is just a minor gripe on an otherwise perfect multiplayer game.

If this game gets a real local multiplayer mode in the future, you can give Splatoon a 10 for me. Otherwise, Splatoon is a solid 7. Only get it if you like online play.

TL;DR - I love it, but there needs to be more of it. A bit bare bones but the Wii U was failing so I don't mind. I've only grown to like it more as its sequel disappointed me.

I have a lot of detailed cons and few pros, but that's just because I'm really good at complaining and not describing good. I, in fact, adore this game a lot.

    Pros:

Unique and Fun Twist - There simply isn't anything that plays like Splatoon, I'd gladly experience inking action day in and day out not only because of an engaging reward system, but actually being fun at its core. Not many games can say that.

Colourful - It's just pretty okay?!

    Cons:

Missing basic features - Since Nintendo has proven to be just like other companies as of late, I've decided to criticise them for this instead of being thankful that they're 'in the past'. Why no bots? Why no servers? Why can't the game tell me what I have and haven't bought already? No gear or weapon sort? etc

Gear - The fun grinds to a halt when it comes to the gear system. One of the big reasons I stopped playing back in the day is because it literally took 6 months to get the rolls on my Motor Boots right, keeping in mind that I was going for the most common roll and not anything weird. On that note, miss Splatfest and you're out of luck, simple as that. I don't blame anyone if they have, in fact, I actively encourage that you use save scumming or even cheating to bypass this system. What a kill joy.

Lacking content - Far too few online modes, especially casual ones. Use the Bucket tool on a pre-existing weapon palettes, re-arrange the pre-existing sub and special assets and release it. Stages? Re-release stages that ended up being overhauled overtime as 'classics'. New modes? Easy: Team Splatmatch (Team Deathmatch), a way to play pre-existing Ranked Modes casually without needing S rank and a friend, pre-existing modes but with asymmetrical multiplayer elements (usual team of 4 VS Player-Controlled and fully armoured Agent 3, fit with fully upgraded mains of each weapon class, every sub and all specials, equipped before the match). Some of these are basics, hence why I'm asking for them, others I understand due to the platform's popularity.

Blasters + Sloshing Machine - Nintendo thought it was smart to make a weapon class that can't miss, kills fast and has the advantage regardless of range. No, no it wasn't. Direct hit, instant kill. Miss twice, still a kill! Using a weaker Blaster that kills in 2 directs or 4 misses? Fires faster to compensate, I already mentioned you can't miss, it's exactly the same but with better coverage and maybe a more helpful set. Long range? Good, bully them without them even realising what's happening or being able to touch you. Short range? You DEFINITELY can't miss now and your range is way longer than you think due to the explosions. The only thing it can't do is get coverage, which doesn't matter as it will face every round essentially unopposed. Could be balanced out by removing automatic fire for tap shots and requiring an additional button press for the ink bullet to explode to make them actually take skill to use and even make them more versatile, then maybe even buff their ink coverage to compensate for these changes.

Balance - Honestly, if specials had a one second delay before activating, it would make all the difference. I'll stand by the idea that chaos is part of the fun, but when you make it impossible to lose or impossible to win, there is no fun to be had, or at least less fun to be had playing, so Bubblers should be gone come the sequel. Kraken is fine if it is given either more knockback or it's health works closer to the big training dummies rather than being invincible. Other specials are fine. Weapons, can confirm that Rollers are NOT overpowered, coverage and instant kill is all they have as the most basic observation skills means you can shoot it down. Shooters are sweet, but the Semi-Shooters L3 and H3, why do they exist? Chargers exist to be annoying, nuff said. Splatlings are my new favourite, if only they released Heavy with a more decent set, but Mini is really good too! Slosher, I don't use it and hate that no one else uses it either, but it's so cool! I gave Blasters and the Sloshing Machine an entire section... yikes.
