    Great Music
    Cool bosses

Im sorry but this game was simply a disappointment to me.
Difficulty is inconsistent and sometimes very much unfair. Awkward controls and unexpected behavior of Shovel Knight leads to random button bash as the best combat strategy. Apart of this, the game is rather short (which is good... phew)

What I really liked in this game was this "knightly ethos" of main character :) Setting and story was also cool.

Overall I find nothing special here. Another overrated nostalgia driven title. Actually nostalgia from SNES times is the only "value" I could potentially see here. But do we really want to play retro games like that all the time? Im tired of this. Does indie scene has nothing else to offer but pixels?
This game could be recommended only to particular audience or people who want to remind yourself how it was to play games when they were young.

The music from Shovel Knight is a 8-bit master piece, Jake Kaufman knows what he is doing.

I'll score this game with a 9.3 because it makes me so happy (not just for that ;] ) and I'm going to replay it right now! I highly recommend picking it up, the retail price makes it worth the shot for the people that are insecure. If you are a platformer fanboy/fangirl go ahead!

8.8 - Really awesome game, went for the retro NES style and executed it perfectly, levels were really well designed, especially if you have the time to look at the background, and bosses were creative and challenging. It almost feels like Mega Man + Castlevania - like game.

Seems like this one is a bit love-hate, with most on the love side. I wanted to love it, and the crazy hype raised expectations even higher. I even love the genre, and Super Metroid might be my favourite game. But I hated Shovel Knight. Weird difficult spikes, awkward controls, punishing lack of checkpoints. Judging by the reviews, it's amazing...but it just never hooked me.

Well well well, isn't this a distinctly brilliant love letter to 2D 8-bit retro platforming? There's humour, pop culture references, hidden things in the multiple paths through the levels, surprisingly varied gameplay within the format and a general brilliance and authenticity which starts as soon as the game does. Only the dual widescreen arrangement belies that we're dealing with a modern game rather than an old 80s one, really. Nods to Mega Man, Contra, Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania and many others can be seen clearly. These are influences rather than Shovel Knight being a pallid ripoff - it's much more than that.

The difficulty is fairly well balanced, going from the easy opening levels to get you familiar with the controls and style before getting a little more punishing as you go through the campaign, demanding tighter timing and movement than before, not shy of throwing you a few potential death traps along the way. Fortunately you can buff up your stats throughout, increasing health, sharpening your shovel and improving your armor for speed or strength as needed. You can grind the first level if you need a few thousand more gold to push you over the point where you can afford that next upgrade, which is a touch I appreciated.

I've played both 3DS and Wii U versions and must say as much as I like the 3DS one, since I have a modified Wii U and can play with a GameCube pad, which just feels that much more natural especially for this sort of game, I prefer this version. It's every good 2D platformer trope with almost no bad ones, what's not to like? Especially the music - through today's modern surround sound systems it sounds bigger and better than I remember almost any original period music doing.

So what are you waiting for? Pick up thy shovel and Strike The Earth!

It was undeniably fun to play. I've never really been into the older games that much, but this game makes me want to give them a second look. Of all the games I got over the holidays, this one was hands-down my favorite. I especially liked the Relics and Armor/Weapon upgrades. Not to mention the game's sheer uniqueness.

In a world where everything's already been done, Shovel Knight managed to give me a genuinely new experience, despite its old-school style. On top of everything else, the difficulty is perfectly balanced - You won't be able to blow through it your first try, but it isn't impossible to beat either. An excellent Wii U purchase.

Oh, and a note... Use the D-pad, not the joystick. You'll find things so much easier.

Has colorful and visually appealing 8-bit graphics that take you back to a time when "Graphics didn't matter."

    Music/Sound: 9/10

The 8-bit sound effects and music are very nostalgic and sounds exactly as they did 30 years ago. If I saw a soundtrack in the store, I probably would've passed on it though. Luckily, they offer the digital soundtrack right with the game!

    My Score-
    Gameplay: 9/10

Goes right back to the 3 button method of D-pad, A, and B. The only problem I have is that the B button is used to confirm and A is to go back, which is reversed from most older NES games, and UP is used to talk to NPC's. Most of these controls can be changed though.

    Story: 8/10

If you're going to model a game based on NES games, a story to go with the game isn't necessary. There wasn't very much story behind it, but they did put a little more behind one than most older games did.

    Fun: 10/10

Feels so much like an NES game, that I often forgot that I was playing a Wii U. It's also a very challenging game that will put your skills to the test, but unlike the old games, there are unlimited lives. Not as hard as NES games, but a close modern comparison to them.

I'm a fan of retro games so Shovel Knight is right up my alley. It's a nice charming celebration of older games, but I still think there is a lot of room for improvement. NES-games were not widescreen, could never have this many sprites nor colors on screen at a time, the animations had much fewer frames etc etc. I understand that if they would follow all the limitations properly a lot of people would complain, and the younger audience can't tell the difference, but at the same time why not make the entire game with new graphics then? It kind of defeats its purpose.

The level design is nice and player friendly, but I find it a tad uninspired. All of the 8-bit Mega Man-games had better level design than this. Some of the backgrounds look not so good. The upgrades are a bit useless except for the Fireball one. You definitely should not have access to two "sub-tanks" per se that early on. They make the bosses very easy to beat. Also they should've had a life system instead of the Super Meat Boy approach. If nothing else it would've extended the playtime a bit.

I like the game, but it ultimately proves to be a footnote in gaming history, not a classic. I find the current price tag of €15 slightly high for a game this short (I finished it in around 3.5 hours). Pricing on indie games is extremely narrow now. Note that 6/10 for me is 3 out of 5, so it's good/ok.

Shovel Knights art style screams nostalgia sale, but I was happy to find that this game isn’t just here to pull money out of your pockets with heart strings, Shovel Knight is it’s own game, an instant classic.
Shovel knight consists of 12 main levels all with their own boss battles, each level and stage getting progressively more challenging.
The pacing is really some of the best ive ever seen in gaming.
Every level has checkpoints, this may annoy the hardcore gamers at first, but you really come to appreciate them, platforming can get really trick for those of us that are impatient.
These type of gamers are who the checkpoints are for, they are essentially training wheels.
Shovel Knight is really more than just a flat forming game, it truly is an experience, and im happy these checkpoints exist so all can experience and guess what… checkpoints are COMPLETELY optional.
    Don’t like them?
Break them, they drop cash so now you have nothing to complain about.
I wouldn’t recommend doing such a thing your first time through as again, shovel knight gets increasingly challenging.
Enemies will start throwing projectiles, youll have to dodge lava and spikes and look out for enemies while you seek out secrets.
There are tons of secrets to be found in shovel knight that I wont spoil, but they add such a great deal of wonder to the game, you never know what youre going to find in a room you just uncovered from an exploding rat.
It could be a music page for you to sell in the villiage, or a new relic waiting for you to grab to help you out through the rest of the game.
I wasn’t expecting relics, but im so happy they exist, these relics all cost magic to use so cant really be spammed, but they are all varied and make you look at levels for better, more efficient ways to traverse them.
You can also save your gold for armour and shovel upgrades, maybe increased magic or meal tickets to increase your health, the choice is yours, but unless youre completely confident in your skills walking into an unknown area you better make that choice before going back out, because every time you die you drop 3 pouches of gold much like in the souls series.
If you want that gold back youre going to have to go grab it, if you die on your way back then its gone forever..
The risk reward makes traversing these gorgeous levels even more enjoyable.
Not only did this development team due a great job with level design and enemies, but also with bosses.
Each boss has its own attack style, so no 2 relics will be equally handy in these encounters, gratefully though, they all die the same way, hit them an x amount of times.
Games can get in the habit of making bosses a little too unique, what shovel knight does so great is make the encounters similar enough to give you a sense of pride and feeling like you used skill to defeat a new enemy rather than you just got completely lucky.
It isn’t common to die during your first encounter with a new boss and that is so refreshing.
I wont get into story all too much, but I will say that it is there, there is reason to the madness and it, at least to me is beautiful.
After you’ve completed the game and have picked every level apart for its secrets and treasures, you have the option to start a new game +.
New game plus lets you start from the beginning with everything you collected in your previous play through, but this time levels are a little tougher as youll notice some checkpoints are missing, enemies do double damage, and there are no health pick ups.
There are tons of challenging feats to accomplish in shovel knight.
Totally worth the playthrough just to experience, a highly recommended game title to both casual and hardcore gamers alike.
I truly believe that everyone can find something to love about shovel knight.

Due to budget and manpower constraints it's common for indie games to emulate the aesthetics and gameplay of classics from the halcyon days of 8 & 16-bit machines, yet I can confidently say that no game in recent memory captures that nostalgic magic quite like Shovel Knight.
Objectively the game accomplishes EVERYTHING it sets out to do, from old-school challenge and level design to charming characters and GREAT music. What distinguishes Shovel Knight amongst the likes of Volgarr the Viking and Super Time Force is how authentically it recalls games of yesteryear; despite subtle flourishes of modern flair, it's almost as if Shovel Knight's presence has been erased from the collective consciousness of gaming history only for him to reappear now as a stalwart saviour of classic design.
Shovel Knight is branching out to more platforms this year, which can only be a good thing. It's only fitting that his console debut was made with Nintendo though, as his exploits suit both the Wii U and 3DS systems perfectly. Here is a new hero with old morals, and his game can proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the career highlights of Mario, Link and co.

Soundtrack it's stunning, with a lot of catchy tunes, stuff that even the best NES games are characterized for.

Despite of this goodness, Shovel Knight it's a bit short. For experienced users in the platform genre, it shouldn't take more than 3 and a half hours to complete it, not enough for me, and for its 15 dollar target price, it can't be the perfect deal.
