You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this valley with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. He wields a ShovelBlade; a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly. However, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress at any cost. Expand

But more than anything else, Shovel Knight oozes personality and charm more than any game I’ve played in recent memory.

Shovel Knight isn't just inspired by 8-bit classics, it is inspired in and of itself.

Shovel Knight is a heartfelt homage to the NES days, with tight gameplay, simple but effective 8bit-ish graphics and a killer soundtrack. It could use a couple of levels more and additional game modes.

Shovel Knight is a memorable re-imagining of what I grew up with, but doesn't have the longevity or inventiveness to be great in its own right.

Starting off with the story, it's simple but really touching if you think about it. The controls are very smooth and I would basically blame myself for my numerous deaths. Speaking of those deaths, this game is pretty hard but very fair. With the NES look and style, it just looks beautiful. My favorite parts of this game are the bosses. They are challenging and always fun to play against. If you loved the NES gems like Megaman, Castlevainia, and Zelda II, this game is perfect for you. And do you know what's crazy? This was the company's first game!! Expand

This gameIf you are a fan of retro games like Mega Man or Duck Hunt and have yet to play Shovel Knight, I strongly suggest you play it now. This game is easily my favorite game I played this year, and I consider it the perfect platformer. The controls are simple, and are fine-tuned to perfection. The soundtrack is amazing and songs fit the levels perfectly. The 8-bit graphics are stunning and colorful while the level design is very enjoyable.
Shovel Knight is an amazing throwback to games of the past. All in all, I really can't say a bad thing about Shovel Knight. It's a great game in every way.

This game not only pays respect to its obvious influences it also does them better. It will put a smile on your face the whole time, even during the difficult sections. After beating it I was so bummed that it wasn't longer which leads to the issue of a game like this. Developers don't want it to be too long/overwhelming to the player, but once they have them hooked it is disappointing when its over. Hopefully the next one will be longer, but this first iteration deserves all the hype behind it. Its a shame that people won't give it a chance because its not shiny with guns. But of course if your reading this then you are probably smarter than the average "gamer".

I'm glad that they had a physical copy of the game released or else I would've missed out on it, being that I prefer to have an actual copy of the games I play.

    Graphics: 10/10

Has colorful and visually appealing 8-bit graphics that take you back to a time when "Graphics didn't matter."

    Music/Sound: 9/10

The 8-bit sound effects and music are very nostalgic and sounds exactly as they did 30 years ago. If I saw a soundtrack in the store, I probably would've passed on it though. Luckily, they offer the digital soundtrack right with the game!

    My Score-
    Gameplay: 9/10

Goes right back to the 3 button method of D-pad, A, and B. The only problem I have is that the B button is used to confirm and A is to go back, which is reversed from most older NES games, and UP is used to talk to NPC's. Most of these controls can be changed though.

    Story: 8/10

If you're going to model a game based on NES games, a story to go with the game isn't necessary. There wasn't very much story behind it, but they did put a little more behind one than most older games did.

    Fun: 10/10

Feels so much like an NES game, that I often forgot that I was playing a Wii U. It's also a very challenging game that will put your skills to the test, but unlike the old games, there are unlimited lives. Not as hard as NES games, but a close modern comparison to them.
